Watching rented movies on Apple TV

Hi,
I just rented a movie on itunes (on my mac) and I am trying to watch it on Apple TV (2nd gen). It's on a rental tab in iTunes, but when I look for it on my Apple TV, there is no rental category on the computer tab. How do I get that to work?

Never mind! Answered my own question, movie hadn't downloaded completely yet

We used to be able to watch rented movies from Apple TV right away.  Now it takes hours.  Is there a setting to change?  They used to start playing after a few minutes of starting the download but not now.  What's up?

Pat, I've been experiencing this issue intermittently for weeks.  It seems to occur with HD content --including HD trailers --exclusively.  Tonight has been no exception.
I have done considerable troubleshooting to try and isolate the cause.  My results suggest that Apple's servers are to blame but I've not seen many others reporting this issue in these forums lately.
I live only 170 miles from Apple's North Carolina server farm.  I assume my iTunes rentals are being fed from there.  My broadband connection is a fast one (30Mb down) and consistently tests near that speed when this issue occurs.
I have both a first and second generation AppleTV.  When this issue occurs, I will change devices and rent the same movie to see if th device itself is to blame.  The issue affects both.  I have tried using an ethernet connection instead of my Airport Extreme's 5Ghz wireless connection but that does not remedy the issue.
So... my broadband connection is more than capable, my router is performing optimally (I recently had my local Apple Store test it as well), and neither of my AppleTV's is immune to the issue, so...  it must be on the delivery end.
Unfortunately, Apple does not post the status of their iTunes Store's servers like they did with their MobileMe servers.  They should.  In fact, the AppleTV should display a status message when Apple's iTunes servers are experiencing technical difficulties or heavy network traffic.
I was an early adopter of AppleTV.  It has not been problematic until now.  This is trying my patience.  My advice is that you request a refund everytime this happens.  I do.
I am taking this matter to the VP of iTunes services.  If Apple's servers are choking, or if their streams are being throttled by ISP's, or internet TV is too ambitious for this country's internet infrastructure, I deserve to know.

  • Problems watching rented movies from Apple TV.

I'm having trouble watching a rented movie on Apple TV.  The movie loads, but when I play the movie it gets "hung" and wont play.  I've upgraded to the latest update and have tried re-starting Apple TV with no luck.

You can go to this page - http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/download/ and read the info available - if none of that helps then use the 'Contact Us' link at the bottom - you will be directed to - http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/browser/. From that page you will be asked to fill in various info. Very painless but you have to fill in the blanks.

  • HT1498 Trouble watching rented movie on Apple TV

I have rented movies through my laptop several times and transferred them to my Apple TV to watch them.  However, I rented one the other day and after I transferred it and pulled it up to play it, I got the message that I wasn't authorized to do so.  However, the other movies I've rented I can play without a problem.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I am having the same problem. Rented a movie tonight. Downloaded it to my ipad but when I try to airplay it to my Apple TV, I'm only getting sound. I have checked my Apple TV is updated, I restarted it and unplugged it for 30 seconds. On my Apple TV I checked itunes for rentals and it says there is nothing there. The only thing I have not tried is restarting my ipad. It's an ipad 2 btw. If I get it sorted out, I'll let ya know how.

  • Watch rented Movie on Apple TV

I rented a movie on my macbook air and I am trying to watch / stream it to my apple tv. Unfortunately I cannot find any rented movies under shared movies (since the "home library" is that of my G5). How am I able to watch this movie on my TV since I asked this question prior to purchase and apparently it works, I just don't know how.

This is a dumb situation. I also rented a movie on my MacBook laptop. My Apple TV is synced to my Desktop iMac. I went to watch the rented movie by going to "Shared Movies" on my Apple TV and it doesn't see the rented movie! If the movie is rented under the same AppleID as the machine that is synced to the Apple TV then we should be able to view it under the "Share Movies" option. There's no reason for this limitation except to make viewing our paid content ridiculously difficult.

  • Cant watch rented movies on apple tv after software update

I recentlly bought apple tv and have not had a problem using it but this afternoon I went to rent a movie as per usual but had to instal a software update first, now i can't watch / rent / download movies. It asks me to confirm my credit card pin number then it just returns to the previous screen. I have tried verifying the credit card, resetting apple tv, turning on and off the modem, restarting apple tv, de registering other devices and it still doesnt work. Anyone know if there is a solution?

I have exactly the same behavior.
One small wrinkle, after re-entering CC details I couldn't even watch purchased TV shows. Then I reset the ATV and after it will allow me to watch TV shows we have bought but I still cannot purchase anything. There is no error message of any kind, it just goes back to the previous screen.
BTW apple, we use my wife's login for ATV

  • Cannot watch rented movie on apple tv 1

I recently rented a movie from the iTunes store and downloaded it into my AppleTV (original version). Surprisingly, at the end of the download when I tried to watch the movie I got an alert message on the screen saying my  AppleTV is not authorized to show the movie. Is there something I missed about the compatibility of the original AppleTV and iTunes Store rentals?

    Try de/re authorising your computer.

  • Watching rented movies on Apple TV - are they stored locally?

I've set up my new Apple TV and rented a movie. It said 20! hours to load - fine I left it over night and the next morning it was complete. I went to watch it in the evening and when I pressed play it started to load again!!
I'm confused - I thought the movies you rent are downloaded to the Apple TV and do not need to be re-loaded? If I need to re-load each time and it takes 20+ hours to do so, the ATV is a bit useless for me!
My internet speed is quite fast, and when I watch anything else online there's no issue. Why would it take so long to load on the Apple TV?
    thanks.

I see this hasn't been answered yet. I've exactly the same problem and I'm not using Google DNS or OpenDNS.
My problem - I rent an SD movie from my 2nd gen Apple TV, leave it thinking it's downloading. Sit down the following evening to watch the film only to be told 'Loading... will be ready to watch in 3hrs...'. Darn. Decide, ok, I'll leave it till tomorrow night. Come the following night, sit down again to enjoy the movie, lo and behold I'm greeted this time with 'Loading... will be ready to watch in 1 hr 33 mins...'! What's going on???
I don't think this is good enough. I also own a 1st gen Apple TV and it never suffered from this - when you rented, it downloaded - none of this two day stop/start.
I read up on the Google DNS issue and I'm definitely not using it. So what's the problem?? At the moment, it pretty much makes the 2nd gen Apple TV fairly useless for me which is a real shame as I loved the old one.
Could we get an explanation of this issue or assistance on tracking the cause?
    Thanks.

Hi vazandrew, thanks for your help, Ive just checked, both home sharings ie Apple TV and itunes on my laptop, and they were both on , but for the heck of it, I turned them off and back on again. I still have the same problem.

  • How can I watch an Apple rented movie via Apple TV?

Continue to have a freezing problem with rented movies from Apple. It *****.

What I ended up doing was to back all the out of the choice sequence and the start the movie from the beginning again. We were able to watch one hour of the movie and then it froze again. After repeated efforts to get it to continue, we gave up and went to bed.
For the recoded, the Internet connection was fine. Netflix worked flawlessly. Only the Apple movie connection was dead.
How do I get my rental money back? I won't be able to finish watching within the required 24 hour period after having started it last night...
I thought this problem would go away after having the FIOS service installed. A 10+ Mgb speed stream should feed a movie in jig time. It's certainly helped with download times on software and Netflix, YouTube, Vimeo streaming. Not Apple, which seems not to know how to buffer.
    Frustrated,
    Mark

  • ITunes message says I can't watch rented movies!

I have Mac OS X 10.5.8, iTunes 10.6.3, Quicktime 7.5.5. iTunes message says I can't watch rented movies & that I need another QT version that I couldn't remember. What should I do? Note, in System Profiler, I have QT 7.5.5 in Apps and in Frameworks.

For now, this is correct. There will be an update to the Apple TV within the next week which will allow it to play rented content as well as rent it natively.
