  • Streaming videos over home network (KDE)?

What do I need to be able to stream videos over home network in KDE?
I tried to do it with ssh, both graphically and by terminal (Network>AddNetwork>ssh) and it didn't work. It tried to download the file. I was reading this is some kind of bug in the KDE.
What else can I use to stream videos? Samba? Avahi?

IMO, it would be best to abandon SSH completely. Its going add undesired overhead to this project.
I use mediatomb to stream content to PS3 and HTPC running Arch: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mediatomb
If you just want to be able to access files locally from a remote server, use NFS to mount the desired remote folders: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NFS

  • IChatAV and file transfer over wireless network

    Hi there...
I'd like to let you in on my predicament. Firstly, a bit of background.
I decided to buy my folks an old iMac from eBay in Australia - and pay for their broadband connection - so that I could video chat to them from the UK, and they could see my 5 year old son for the first time in 4 years. Cute, eh?
Well, everything was working fine until I decided to go wireless in my home about 3 months ago. I have a static IP address, and purchased a nice new Airport Express to integrate into the system. I allocated my G5 iMac it's own network address (10.0.1.2), and the base station the master address (10.0.1.1). From there, the base station communicates to the router via the static IP... Sound ok?
Anyway - NOW (or, for as long as I can recall), I CANNOT for the life of me send files over the connection. Video chat and audio chat are fine (although OCCASIONALLY it takes a few goes to be able to see THEM on my computer - I think their bandwidth isn't THAT stable at 512Kbps down and 128Kbps up) - however, the correct ports have been unblocked on the OSX firewall AND the Airport Express base station.
And just so that you know it's not the folks' fault - I can't send documents/images over the network to friends I KNOW are competent (or, at least more competent than my parents!). There's always an error message at the receiver's end, and the file I'm attempting to send just times out.
Has anyone any suggestions as to how I might be able to resolve this problem before I expire from old age?!?
    Your thoughts are REALLY appreciated!

    Hi Ralph
I can see where that might be the case, but file transfer worked flawlessly BEFORE I went wireless using the same modem. The only way to unblock ports on my router is to turn NAT off - it creates a DMZ, so it permits unhindered 2-way traffic...
It's a pretty confusing piece of kit. Maybe I should just get a Netgear anyway!
I have a laptop on the wireless network as well, and file transfer works a treat between it and the iMac. All I can think of is that because I'm now working on a LAN, there's a blockage to get out to the "Real World" - even though it's easy for video to pass through.
I'll check my unblocked ports again, just to be sure. I'm unfamilar with the term "Jabber" - is that what Apple decided to call one of the elements of iChat? Excuse my ignorance...!

  • Printing to shared windows printer over wireless network

    Hi,
I just bought my wife a MacBook and recently updated it to Leopard (OS X 10.5). I have a Lexmark X5150 printer connected to a desktop PC running Windows XP. I can share files between the two computers no problem either wirelessly or through an ethernet connection through my router. But, I'm having troubles accessing the shared printer through the Macbook wirelessly. If I connect the printer directly to the Macbook, I can add the printer with appropriate drivers no problem. However, when I try to add the printer as Windows shared printer, the appropriate driver doesn't show up in the drop down list. I can navigate to and find the printer over the network fine, but I just can't find the right driver. I'm a newbie to Mac and was wondering if there is anyway to find the driver using Finder or something similar to determine where it physially resides on the Mac. I know it's there because it is automatically selected when I directly connect the printer to the Macbook and add the printer. Any thoughts??

Couldn't figure things out, so I'll just stick with connecting the printer directly to the macbook.

  • Can't Print Over Wireless Network to HP OfficeJet 6210 connected to XP Comp

I've been trying in vain for the better part of a week and a half to print from my MacBook Pro (w/ Leopard 10.5.5) over my wireless network (Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router) to an HP OfficeJet 6210 connected to my Dell Desktop running Windows XP SP3. I CAN however, both see and print to the printer with a PC laptop running Windows Vista. I've both re-installed and upgraded the drivers to the Windows XP desktop AND the MacBook Pro for the printer and still can't come to a conclusion. I am able to print to the printer from the MacBook Pro when plugged directly in via USB. I've tried to add the printer via "Windows" tab in printer configuration by choosing the network, then the computer, then entering the administrator accounts user name/password, however I'm still unable to print from the MacBook. Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi LukeZim,
Sorry, but drivers on OS X aren't like on Windows (yet), where a driver is just a component in a system that works for all the comm protocols the computer can do. That's the way it would be if manufacturers provided CUPS drivers (CUPS is the print control system on OSX). But most manufacturers are still providing Carbon drivers - where the comm protocol is limited to what is put into the driver. HP provided a Carbon, USB-only driver for your printer. You'll need to use a third-party CUPS driver to use Windows Printing.
Gutenprint drivers (included with Leopard) are CUPS drivers, for example.

  • Scan to printer over wireless network

    Hi there,
I have the pixma mx882 printer and it is configured over my wireless network. I am trying to locate the scanning software that enables me to scan via the wireless network?.
I tried the MP Navigator EX V4.1.3, although it says I need to connect the printer via USB. I presume there is a way to scan back to my Windows 7 PC via the wireless config I have?
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_all_in_one_inkjet_prin...
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi motoq79,
With MP Navigator EX installed and the printer setup on the network, you may need to configure a few additional things to be able to scan over the network.
We have an excellent article on our Knowledge Base that details all the setup that is necessary to scan over the network.  To view the article, CLICK HERE.

  • Over Wireless - Network Accounts Unavailable

I have seen a couple of posts on this site in regards to this topic, but nothing seems to have worked. Here is what I have...
I have an OS X Server (10.4.5) that is my OD master.
I have a wired/wireless network. Clients are authenticating just fine over the wired network. Clients cannot authenticate over the wireless network (Airport APs that are NOT distributing IP addresses, that is done via a DHCP server).
I have several teachers with laptops, but they are using mobile accounts, so when the login, it appears as a local account to the machine and the login without issue. The server then synchronizes just fine.
I have setup a couple wireless eMacs around the building recently, and have given them static IP addresses (though I would prefer to use my DHCP server which is seperate from my OD server), yet they are not talking to the network or the OD server, it appears, until after a local account is logged in. At that point, I can logout and then log back in using an account setup in WorkGroup Manager.
I have noticed on the login screen that even though there is a static IP address, it is not appearing on the login screen when I scroll through the machine attributes, which hints me to the thought that the machine is not yet on the network. I also cannot ping the machine or hit it with Remote Desktop.
I have tried clearing out the LDAP directory settings and reinstalling them from the wireless network to no avail. I have also attempted to clear out the directory settings in the /Volumes/HD/Library/Preferences/DirectoryService settings, also to no avail.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I unfortunately cannot help with your situation, but it seems that you work in an educational environment as I do, and you might be able to help me. I've been running mac networks for a long time, with Xserves since they came out. I currently manage a wired/wireless network with an Xserve G5 as OD master. Up until last week, at any given time, the most clients we had accessing the server at once was about 60 wired computers and maybe 10-15 wireless and things ran beautifully. We just started using 60 new laptops and everything has gone to crap. After 6 months with ZERO server crashes/downtime, I've had 2 crashes in the last week. Even before the crashes, with about 100 clients accessing the network, everything was painfully slow. Portable home directories is not an option because we're not up to 1:1 yet. This is new territory for me. Can you give me an idea of the number of wired/wireless clients you manage? Any suggestions on what upgrades come first, like RAM? I have an Xserve G4 not being used. Any ideas on the best way to use it to help? Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Printing over wireless Network connection

Both my iMac and Macbook are networked over a wireless network. My printer is connected to my MacBook.
I have turned on print sharing on both computers and am able to see the printer that's connected to my MacBook on my iMac, but when I try and print something on my iMac, nothing happens.
It gets added to a print queue on the iMac, but not the MacBook.
Can anyone give me an explanation as to why this is happening? and how to rectify this?
    Thanks!
    Phil

I have a PowerMac G5 desktop which has a printer attached by USB. I have a wireless router, to which the G5 is connected by Ethernet, and a MacBook wirelessly. Printer Sharing is turned on on the G5 because it is "hosting" the printer. I don't have Printer Sharing turned on on my MacBook. I can print wirelessly from the MacBook even though printer sharing is off (I do have file sharing turned on, however). Any computer on the network (I only have a MacBook) can see the printer attached to the host G5. I wonder with your setup why your printer is attached to the laptop and not the desktop (just your preferred setup I guess). I wonder if having both computers' print sharing on is confusing things b/c only one of them actually has a printer attached. I do remember having to reboot in the early days of my setup when I had Printer Sharing enabled on both machines. But like you said it is working so it really doesn't matter.

  • Is online banking secure/safe to do over wireless network?

    ''locking as a duplicate - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/867855''
I will be traveling and would like to know if it is safe to check my credit card and checking account online over the wireless network at the hotel?

Use AirPort Utility and click the amber dot. It will tell you the reason it's blinking.
Is the network secure. i.e. can I safely do online banking?
As long as you secured your wireless network with WPA / WPA2 security using a non-trivial password, yes, it's as secure a method as there is at present. It's just as important to keep your Express in a location inaccessible to anyone untrustworthy.

  • Wireless voice over wireless network?

I am looking for any info on available or coming products that offer wireless phone/radio voice capability over 802.11b or other wireless networks. Basically a modern and cost effective alternative for an in-house radio network based on the LAN infrastructure. I just started checking into this so please clue me in.

As you might have seen in a recent Symbol press release(http://www.symbol.com/news/pressreleases/press_releases_miscpr_cisco.html) the NetVision DS Phone is the first 802.11b wireless mobile device ever to receive AVVID verification for resale by Cisco resellers, thus expanding the breadth of product and service offerings for Cisco AVVID IP Telelphony Specialists.
