Water in Keyboard -- repair question (time/recovery)

Hi All. I think that I spilled a tiny bit of water on my keyboard earlier, right around my shift key. A few hours later, my shift key was permanately engaged and would not stop. I didn't know what the problem was at the time, so stupidly I tried to mess with it a little and popped it off. I also restarted my computer in hopes that that would help, and it did not.
Now, when I try to reboot, it automatically goes into safe mode because of the shift key. I can't enter my password correctly because it is case sensitive, so I can't even get on to my computer in safe mode.
I realize that I'm likely going to have to have the keyboard repaired. But will my files be able to be recovered? I have some very important ones that were not backed up (stupid, I know ). Also, will they be able to access these files BEFORE sending my computer off for repairs? It's imperative that I have them.
Also, does anyone know about how long it takes to get a keyboard replaced? I have my dissertation due in 2 weeks so I am completely freaking out right now.

It was literally a couple of drops. I thought I contained them before any fell into the keyboard but I can't imagine that this is all coincidence.
I don't know how to remove the battery on my macbook -- I've never done it before.
I'm fine with having to replace the stupid keyboard if need be, I'm just concerned about my files and having access to them, and how long the repair will take.

    Your backups may be hopelessly corrupted, but there's a chance an (expensive) 3rd-party Disk Repair utility might be able to fix them.  For the moment, eject and disconnect the TM drive and try to repair the internal.

    Do that first.

    If you have records that show that you've taken your MacBook Pro in for a year to fix the machine, I would escalate the problem to Apple Customer Relations - unfortunately I don't have a number for Spain.
    It would only seem logical to me that if you've been trying to have the machine repaired during the time that the 'recall' was in effect that you should be eligible for a new logic board. But only customer relations will be able to make that call.
    Good luck - take the issue as high up the food chain as you can and see what happens.

  • How to repair disk using Recovery HD

    I just did a repair permissions and verify disk and got the following message:
    Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD." This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility. The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
    This might be a stupid question, but:  Following the instructions above, is that procedure the "Recovery HD," or is that an actual disk that I'm supposed to have? What do I do when I go to Disk Utility?
    I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch, mid 2010, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with a replaced (May 2014) 500 GB hard drive, OS X Mavericks 10.9.5.
    Many thanks!!!

    Thanks for your quick reply and advice!
    I will try that and hopefully that'll fix it.

  • Disk needs to be repaired using the recovery HD

    Hello,
    I have received an error when running disk utility that says, "This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD." This issue has popped on a couple of times on my previous MacBooks and maybe once on my current one.
    I have followed the suggested protocol (restart + command + r), and I choose disk utilities from the menu at start-up. I have both verified and repaired the disk (my HD), and disk utility says there are no errors; however, when I do a normal restart and run disk utilities again, I get the error message This disk needs to be repaired" again. I have cycled through this process and each time verify and repair disk on the Recovery HD indicates that nothing is wrong while verifying the disk on normal startup results in the same error. I computer has also been laggy.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

For me to get an email response with in an hour of contacting a company on the east coast who is not likely open at 2am is more than impressive in my book. Hotrodmkviii,
    try rebooting in Recovery mode, but when you reach the Mac OS X Utilities menu, run Terminal (from Utilities in the menu bar) instead. Inside the Terminal window, give it the following command, and then press the Return key:
    diskutil list
    Please include in your reply the output from that command.

  • Doubt about database point in time recovery using rman

    Hi Everyone,
    I have been practising various rman restore and recovery scenarios . I have a doubt regarding database point in time recovery using rman. Imagine i have a full database backup including controlfile scheduled to run at 10 PM everyday. today is 20th dec 2013. imagine i want to restore the database to a prior point in time ( say 18th dec till 8 AM). so i would restore all the datafiles  from 17th night's backup and apply archives till 8 AM of 18th dec . in this scenario should i restore the controlfile too from 17th dec bkp ( i am assuming yes we should ) or can we use the current controlfile ( assuming it is intact). i found the below from oracle docs.
    Performing Point-in-Time Recovery with a Current Control File
    The database must be closed to perform database point-in-time recovery. If you are recovering to a time, then you should set the time format environment variables before invoking RMAN. The following are sample Globalization Support settings:
    NLS_LANG = american_america.us7ascii
    NLS_DATE_FORMAT="Mon DD YYYY HH24:MI:SS"
    To recover the database until a specified time, SCN, or log sequence number:
    After connecting to the target database and, optionally, the recovery catalog database, ensure that the database is mounted. If the database is open, shut it down and then mount it:
    2.  SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
    3.  STARTUP MOUNT;
    4.
    Determine the time, SCN, or log sequence that should end recovery. For example, if you discover that a user accidentally dropped a tablespace at 9:02 a.m., then you can recover to 9 a.m.--just before the drop occurred. You will lose all changes to the database made after that time.
    You can also examine the alert.log to find the SCN of an event and recover to a prior SCN. Alternatively, you can determine the log sequence number that contains the recovery termination SCN, and then recover through that log. For example, query V$LOG_HISTORY to view the logs that you have archived.
    RECID      STAMP      THREAD#    SEQUENCE#  FIRST_CHAN FIRST_TIM NEXT_CHANG
             1  344890611          1          1      20037 24-SEP-02      20043
             2  344890615          1          2      20043 24-SEP-02      20045
             3  344890618          1          3      20045 24-SEP-02      20046
    Perform the following operations within a RUN command:
    Set the end recovery time, SCN, or log sequence. If specifying a time, then use the date format specified in the NLS_LANG and NLS_DATE_FORMAT environment variables.
    If automatic channels are not configured, then manually allocate one or more channels.
    Restore and recover the database.
      The following example performs an incomplete recovery until November 15 at 9 a.m.
    RUN
      SET UNTIL TIME 'Nov 15 2002 09:00:00';
      # SET UNTIL SCN 1000;       # alternatively, specify SCN
      # SET UNTIL SEQUENCE 9923;  # alternatively, specify log sequence number
      RESTORE DATABASE;
      RECOVER DATABASE;
    If recovery was successful, then open the database and reset the online logs:
    5.  ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
    I did not quiet understand why the above scenario is using current controlfile as the checkpoint scn in the current controlfile and the checkpoint scn in the datafile headers do not match after the restore and recovery. Thanks in Advance for your help.
    Thanks
    satya

    Thanks for the reply ... but what about the checkpoint scn in the controlfile . my understanding is that unless the checkpoint scn in the controlfile and datafiles do not match the database will not open. so assuming the checkpoint scn in my current controlfile is 1500 and i want to recover my database till scn 1200. so the scn in the datafiles (which is 1200) is not not matching with the scn in the controlfile(1500). so will the database open in such cases.
    Thanks
    Satya

    I'm doing a reorg so I exported the production schemas and droped the schemas so that I can import the data again, but I dropped one user with out exporting it first!. I have no full exports but archivelog is enabled.

    ORA-01180: can not create datafile 1Basically this error means RMAN 'thinks, I have no backup of datafile 1 and will try to create datafile 1. Afterwards I will apply archivelogs to the newly created datafile' . But that is not possible for datafile 1.
    By the way instead of 'DEC 12 2009 04:00:00', I would always use something like
    "TO_DATE('DEC 12 2009 04:00:00','MM DD YYYY HH24:MI:SS')" .
    So you are sure the date is always interpreted correctly - independent of your default format settings.

  • How to repair the Time Capsule without losing data?

    Hi everyone,
    I am from Vietnam. My 2TB Time Capsule is not working anymore. The LED light is not lit. Brought it for warranty claim. Apple reseller in my country agree to replace a new one for me. But the problem is I will lose all the data. I believe it's HDD still good. But they can't help me to get data. Please advise where can repair the Time capsule in which they can retain the data for me.

    Before you do this be sure and let Apple know that is what you are doing so it will not void the warranty on your Time Capsule.
    That will void the warranty. Generally Apple will not allow you to recover data.
    The TC is basically a backup target for TM.. this is not considered valuable in and of itself. You simply buy the new TC and make a new clean backup.
    If you put data on the TC, it is without any means to backup itself and nor can TM backup data on network drives.. so you are stuck. And that is why we do not recommend TC usage as a NAS.
    See if the reseller is strict about the policy.. some will be prepared to help you out.
    The hard disk has to be removed from the TC.. which is a sealed unit. The hard disk can then be put in a USB holder and the material on the drive copied to the new TC, or any external or network drive.
    There is absolutely no way without removing the drive in a dead TC.
