Water, Logic Board Help!

Hey guys,
First of all Thank you for the help...
So basically what I did is spill water on my mac and it shut down automatically, then I quickly opened the back (macpro mid 2010 unibody) to remove the battery but by the time i got in there was a little puff of smoke that same out just like that so I unplugged the battery and let it dry for about 2 days.
Since I have no more apple care and the back was already open I decided (maybe not my brightess idea) to check out the logic board, found a lot of sites with how to take it apart and it was very easy I checked it out and it doesnt look damaged or anything I cleaned it with a toothbrush and basically it looks very well nothing sticky nothing dirty etc. Then I replugged everything in, closed it up and when I pressed on the battery indicator light no the side of the mac nothing happened, then I tried turning it on nothing, then I tried plugging it in and the little green/red light turned on for a couple of seconds and then just dimmed out and then nothing when I plug it in nothing and I still cannot get it to even turn on make any noise or anything...
Does anyone have a slight clue of what might have happened? The HD is fine I got a SATA cable plugged it in another computer etc it work fine.

Answer, the logic board at the very LEAST is fried,..you blew some micro resistors and likely smoked the untold havoc on the logic.
Looking inside isnt going to solve anything, you CANNOT fix anything,......replace parts yes.....fix NO WAY.
Days of "fixing things" inside laptops died almost 18 years ago. Things are too small, and its too much fuss.
everything now is:
A: find broken
B: toss broken
C: install new.

Getting New iBook Logic Board -- help? :)

Well I wasn't sure which forum to post this in, so I also put it in the 'Peripherals' forum.
Ok, here is my problem. I bought a G4 iBook 1.07ghz with a bad logic board from someone on craigslist. I am wanting to put a G4 1.33ghz logic board in it now. I found one on pbfixit.com for $550, but I also spoke with someone on ebay that said he thinks he has some 1.33's laying around. I am wanting a logic board with the two-finger-scrolling and the 'shock detection' features; also Bluetooth2.0edr and Airport Extreme. Well I asked the guy on eBay if he knew if his 1.33 boards had these features or not and he wasn't sure. Is there something he can check (model number/serial number/something physically on the board/etc) to see if he has any of the boards that's new enough to have these features? I'm not as worried about the Bluetooth+Airport Extreme because I found a module board on pbfixit with both of these in one.

(I have lots of Burke cousins, since my cousin in Wichita had six sons.)
If the iBook is circa 2001 like the iPod, chances are that's the reason the tech says you're out of luck. There's a three-year limit on the program.
Enough dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from this problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If your iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.
If you are past the three-year time limit, try calling and asking for Customer Relations. Ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case. They have been making some exceptions to the three-year rule, but the criteria upon which they make an exception is not public knowledge. It could be how nice you are to them on the phone; it could be which tech you get; it could be which side of the bed the tech got out of on the morning that you call.

My Powerbook G4 died of logic board failure can you help or advise me ?

On Christmas eve I was working on my 2 year old 12" Powerbook G4, I got a notification that the battery was low so I thought lets save my work and drain the battery. It was a good idea at the time because I've heard its sometimes good practice to completely drain the battery and give it a fresh charge ? so the machine finally quit and before going to bed I plugged it into the mains to charge, immediately I noticed the power cord connection to my mac turned green and not the amber I expected. This powerbook has travelled the world with me over the past 2 years so its been a little buddy and I was alarmed to see this happen ? I waited 20 minutes guessing that there would be sufficient charge to wake the machine. After hitting the power button there was nothing !!! no click, chime or indication that he machine was in any way operational.
I tried cleaning the battery and touch points in the machine, I even tried my spare battery in the machine and everything I could to wake the machine. Nothing worked. I was pretty annoyed to be honest, its in perfect condition, no dents scrapes and it was always maintained and well ventilated etc.
On December 27th I flew to Irelands official Mac repair centre here in Galway as I needed it fixed ASAP and I was very concerned about loosing all my work and the physical machine itself. Five days later I called to see if there was a update, the representative explained to me that it was the logic board in my machine and that it was damaged and I would require a new logic board if the machine was to ever successfully boot again. The bill in total would be €670 inc. parts and labour and unfortunately Apple will only guarantee the new logic board for 3 months and after that I'm on my own. Sadly when I bought my machine (in Australia)I didn't take out the extended cover on the machine because it seemed quite expensive at the time and I knew I'd take good care to maintain and upgrade the machine as necessary.
The update I received from the official Apple repair centre was that there was no evidence of any water damage, dust or physical damage and there was no clear explanation as to why the part "just gave up"! The representative was very helpful and removed the hard drive for me, placed it in a external (USB)enclosure and sent it back to me so I did manage to save my work but still Imp very disappointed with Apple that I only got 2 years out of a machine that's become a daily tool to me.
I wanted to post and see what other people have done in this instance, luckily I'm fortunate enough to be able to purchase a new Macbook 2.0ghz to replace my machine but that's now costing me €1519 just because the Apple hardware was well quite frankly crap ! What I would like to know is - does this happen often, is there recourse to go back to Apple and is there a cheaper way to fix my poor Powerbook http://www.flickr.com/photos/bfitzsimons/215516415/ ?

Hi Brian.
In the UK we have some degree of consumer protection (Sale of Goods Act) for situations not too far from yours. Basically we, as consumers, have a right to expect goods that we purchase to be of a certain standard of quality/reliability. The SOGA provides up to six years of protection, unlike the standard one year warranty many manufacturers offer - which, to some degree, renders extended warranties unecessary.
However each case is different, and consumers will get different mileage depending on their individual circumstances but it is not uncommon for consumers to have successfully obtained repairs, replacements, or refunds using the SOGA - although they will have had to be prepared to argue their case.
Perhaps you might want to check out what kind of consumer protection the Republic of Ireland offers. At the very least, there is probably an EU equivalent of the SOGA which will cover the ROI as well.
NB: I've just re-read your post and realised that you bought the PowerBook in Australia - which probably disqualifies you from any EU or ROI consumer protection. That said, it may still be worth your while to find out what kind of consumer protection is available to you for future reference.

Water spilled on MacBook, need to replace Logic Board--worth it to send it in for total repair (where it will be like "factory new")?

Thursday--I spilled water on the keyboard of my MacBook Pro 15", and it immediately turned off. I unplugged it from the charger and turned it upside down, and then began to dry it off the best i could with a towel while letting it drain. Then I took it straight to the Apple store on my campus, where a technician removed the back, took each part out separately, and then dried it/the parts out the best he could. He advised me to wait a day or two and then try to turn it on.
Saturday--I used a hair dryer on low heat to help dry it out the best I could, and then I tried to turn my computer on. It wouldn't work, but when I plugged it into the charger it did turn on. The screen looked a little waterlogged and was flickering slightly. I took it back to the store and they said that their technician would look at it.
Wednesday--I went back to check on the status of my MacBook, and the guy presented me with two options:
I can replace the Logic Board for approx. $500-600 and be done with it (and eventually the moisture in the screen, which is clear as ever now, will dry up?)
or
I can send my entire MacBook back to the factory for replacement/repair of anything that might need fixing for around $1300-1400.
I am currently on my MacBook now, and it seems to be working just fine (although it has to stay plugged into a power source because the battery won't charge)...
Money isn't an issue here, yet (it was bought with an AmEx and is covered with that warranty up to a certain dollar amount), but my question is this: Is it necessary for me to replace my Logic Board, if my computer still seems to be working--or will I end up seeing issues down the road if I don't and Should I go ahead and send it in for a full factory repair?? Is it really worth it??

It would be best to send your MacBook in for a complete overhauled, this will save you time and trouble in the near future. I am sure you have some items internally that will continue to corrode and render your MacBook inoperable some day soon.

Ive sustained damage to my logic board after water damage. Can anyone tell me if it can be repaired or what the parts which have fallen off do(looks like 2 tiny capacitors?) . Magsafe has green light and battery charges but machine shows no other life signs. any help would be most appreciated thanks

I spilled wine on my mid 2009 unibody macbook pro, now when I power up I see Hard drive light On, I hear fan noise, but don't hear any startup Apple chime and nothing on display, I cleaned the logic board with 91% alcohol, but that didn't change anything. Before cleaning the logicboard, their were no signs of wine on the logicboard, but there was a lot of wine on the keyboard black sheet.
My guess is:
1. The keyboard might be causing this behaiour, I wan't to bypass the keyboard, can you please confirm if these are the right power pads on logicboard?

Less than a year after purchasing a brand new, early-2011 Macbook Pro (still covered under Extended Apple Care) and, sadly, only a week or two after finally upgrading to 8GB RAM, I returned to my notebook after taking a shower and watched it suddenly shut itself down. It has not been responsive to the power button since then (although, see below.. I think I can fix it).
Genius Bar took one look at the visible moisture sensor you can see underneath where the RAM sits and declared it water-damaged. While I agree that either a short and/or corrosion is causing my MBP to malfunction, I don't believe it should void my warranty because the problem isn't that I spilled something on it.1
I hope someone can give me some insight into fixing this myself. Apple says "the Logic Board needs replaced" (a common CS response, I've noticed) the water damage voids my Extended Care + that it'll be at least $1200 and several weeks. Here's the situation:
MBP will not turn on just by pressing the power button. However, MBP consistently (every time) powers up when I do an SMC reset.
I have it in verbose mode and it begins booting. But, it will invariably turn off without warning anywhere between 30 seconds and 8-10 minutes after powering up.

Eighty percent of the time, it turns off during the pre-Xorg boot. However, I have also seen it fully boot, I log in, I'm able to peruse logfiles/etc. Safe Mode (holding shift) crashes early. Single-user mode makes no difference. PRAM/NVRAM/etc makes no difference. I can boot to the Recovery Partition but it turns off just the same (disk utility scan takes too long).
I haven't been able to really test the Internet Recovery because the hotel wireless takes too long. I did boot into Hardware Test and it passed the basic and extended tests (although it seemed to just be testing the RAM integrity.
I can boot from the optical drive with a FreeBSD 9 livecd and an Ubuntu 11.04 livecd. Of note is that the laptop shuts off consistently when FreeBSD begins the journaling services for the ZFS filesystem (every time).
Here is where this leads me to believe I'm at (I am not dogmatic here and would appreciate any corrections or insight):
It seems like there may be corrosive damage on the logic board but maybe it's isolated given the various consistencies in what's happening. It seems like whenever SATA is use, I lose power. When SATA isn't really used (the HW Test), the laptop has literally stayed on for days and days.
I want to get in there and clean up any corrosion with 91% isopropyl alcohol (9% distilled, non-conductive water).
I want to use a bootable OSX livecd with an "emergency console" so I can, basically, use boot options to step throught the boot process and see if I can isolate the problem.
Here is what I'm uncertain about and could use guidance:
Does any of this sound remotely reasonable to anyone who has been through this or am I delusional?
Any tips on identifying and cleaning any corrosion?
While I had made a bootable version of Lion via Disk Utility and a rescue disk with some third-party app, they are MIA and I don't have another Mac at the moment. Do I have any other options? Again, an install dvd is not exactly what I want -- more like a rescue dvd. I had read about some Apple Stores giving/copying bootable USB thumb drives like this to customers. But, I noticed that this is now on sale there for $80. I would use this like once and, ideally, could use my MBP to make more. $80 seems a bit much.
I should be able to step through the boot process in a way like what's possible with FreeBSD, no?
Anyone have any other specific troubleshooting tips?

To be totally honest, about 3 weeks prior I spilled some milk from cereal on the desk and a little bit got onto the battery. However, the notebook worked fine for the following weeks. I believe that the problems have been caused by ambient humidity ... I've been staying in a hotel that steams up the entire room when I take a shower. The windows are covered in water droplets so why wouldnt the MBP be affected? As noted, these problems began after I lingered in a hot shower.

I have just had my iMac G5 First Gen 1.8Ghz fitted with a new Logic Board under the Apple Repair Extension Programme for iMacs.
I got the iMac home from the repairers and switched it on and everything was working fine for about 2 hours and then all of a sudden the Error Page came up on the Screen (with a big On/Off Switch Logo) and it said I had to shut down.
So I shut it down waited a few minutes and then tried to re-boot it but nothing happened. All that happended was the Power Light in the Right hand corner came on..but nothing else....
Help! Any ideas what to do please?

If you have an external firewire drive (it has to be firewire, USB won't boot on a Rev A), plug it in to the firewire port and turn it on, then boot your iMac and see if it shows on the screen.
Have you tried to hit the eject (up arrow, the last button on the top row of the keyboard) button when you boot, perhaps the repairers left a disc in the drive? Then try and put your install disc in.

Keys 5-9 no longer work after water damage. Do I need a new logic board?

I had the smallest amount of water on my fingers when I typed something on my keyboard and now keys 5-9 no longer work. Will I need a whole new logic board for this? I've been into two Apple stores and both say I need to book an appointment online. I've been online and tried to book in at three different Apole stores within my area and I just get 'there are no slots available' how am I supposed to get this fixed if I can't book a session to see some!?! Sort it out Apply, it's why your products cost so bl**dy much isn't it!?

thanks, but I really don't think its the logic board since I can still plug in head phones and i can hear movies, etc.
also when i don't have my magicJack plugged in to make calls they now give you a magictalk dial pad to make calls and when i plug in the headphones again i can talk through the speakers and be heard and I can hear them too. Is there something I can used to maybe pull out the connection. I think it thinks the headphones are plugged in all the time.

Replaced Hard drive and logic board on ipod 5.5g...still get sad ipod HELP!

I've tried searching around the forums to see if anyone has had this similar problem AFTER replacing the hard drive in their ipods. Of course there are tons of people with similar issues, and the responses are always "replace the hard drive", so I'm going to see if there are any other possible issues out there that I could look into. So here's my situation specifically.
I have an ipod video 80 gig, and it seemed as if the hard drive pooped the bed on day 366 (only a slight exaggeration) after purchase, putting me right outside of my warranty. The apple store wouldn't do anything without charging me the cost of a new ipod to repair it. So, it had been sitting in my desk drawer for almost a year when I finally got around to replacing, and upgrading, the hard drive. I found a 120 gig drive on ebay, which after an email confirming my model, the seller said should work as a replacement. After installing the hard drive, I got the same exact problem that I had before. It would say to "wait. low battery", then the apple logo would show up with no back light, and then it would go right to the sad ipod face. I left it charging for a couple of hours, and it would just keep cycling through those three screens, until dying eventually after unplugging it. If I hook it up to my computer, nothing happens besides the ipod trying to charge. When I try to force it into disk mode, it seems like the ipod will reset to the apple logo screen, but it goes right back to doing the same little dance. I tried opening it and checking the cables a couple of times, and the last time, I broke the little cable clamp that holds the lcd ribbon. So...I ended up buying a replacement logic board. I installed that, hoping the logic board may have been the problem all along, and as soon as I plugged it in...same old crap. Now, in a last ditch effort, I've ordered a new hdd ribbon to see if that remedies the problem.
I realize that I should have perhaps waited a week until it comes, to see if that fixes it. But to be honest, I can't see anything wrong with the hard drive cable that I have right now, so I remain doubtful that it's going to fix anything. What I'm wondering, is if anyone has any idea if there is something that I may have overlooked, or if I might be barking up the wrong tree? Is it possible that the hard drive that I ordered was broken when I installed it? The seller (who seems to be a reputable seller on ebay, with lots of positive feedback) said that they test all of there hard drives before selling/shipping, and that there is no way that they shipped me a broken one. They also seemed convinced that the hard drive would work with my model. Is there anything other than the hard drive, or logic board that could cause this type of problem? Is the hard drive ribbon the only other possibility? Is there something software wise that I can do?
Please. Any feedback or help would be greatly appreciated. I've spent more on this thing than I could have paid for a used, but working one, and I'm about to lose it.

UPDATE:
Ive installed the new hdd ribbon. It seems to have gotten me a little closer to solving my problem. I am now able to get into disk mode, and if I reset it, I can get to a screen telling me to connect my ipod to itunes and restore it. However, after the restore process, it says it's resetting the ipod, and then it goes right back to telling me that it needs to be restored. I've been trying to search all the forums on the "restore loop". It seems like a lot of people have had luck changing the drive letter. My problem is, that I can't get into the disk management window. When I try to click on it, I get the "program is not responding" and the window freezes until I close it. Again, I'm using windows Vista 64.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I'll just try to keep trying, and keep looking around in the mean time.

Need help buying a logic board!!!

So I posted a while back about my mac failing to boot up. Now I concluded it was the logic board that was faulty. I need help deciphering what the part numbers mean.
My logic board part number is 630-6694/T6690 and model 820-1592-A. This came with the dual 2.0 ghz PPC970fx 90nm model (June 2004). There are boards with the same model number as mine, but different part number prefixes (i.e. 661-xxxx instead of 630-xxxx), so what does this mean????
I would like to really get the latest motherboard that is still compatible with the processors, if that's possible? I have seen different dual socket boards like 820-1760-A, which I'm interested in since it is the Early 2005 model.
Can anyone here with technical knowledge shed some light on what these model numbers and part numbers mean?

(HELP) Dead MacBook Pro.. possibly something to do with the logic board.

I had been noticing my MacBook Pro's performance degrading lately.. for example whenever I dragged a file into a folder it would lag for 5-6 seconds and then copy over. It started to bug me so I guessed that maybe a reinstall would fix the problem. After reinstalling and rebooting, I got no video on the display.. keyboard wouldn't work.. only things that happened was the disc drive made a sound, light came on the font and could hear the HDD spinning a little.
I then took it to the Apple store as thats what Apple told me to do on the phone. So we took the loverly 3 hour drive(there and back) to the closest Apple store just to have the man take it out the back for 2-3 minutes and then come back to say "It's possibly the logic board that is dead".
I am out of warranty by 2-3 months and so he told me I would have to pay £700 or so to repair. As a full-time student I don't have that kind of money.. I don't even have £60. - I find it annoying how they didn't even fully check the problem out.. just a "possibly the logic board".
So what if I manage to click my fingers and have £700 appear right before my very eyes? I pay for the new logic board just to find out thats not really the problem? or maybe have the same thing happen again right after the 90 days that logic board is covered for? meaning I have to fork out another £700.
I am a massive fan of Apple.. I love their products. I have brought so many products of theirs.. now just 2-3 months after my warranty runs out.. I get this. They didn't even say sorry for selling me a faulty product and didn't offer to help out in any way. When I spend £1,299 on something I expect it to last A LOT longer than a year and 3 months.
I need my MacBook Pro very badly for College but now I can't do my work and if I want to do my work, I have to pay £700 for it.
What do I do? Who do I talk to? Is it possible to get it fixed without having to pay that kind of money?
I can't settle for anything less than a Mac. I love the OS way too much and need so many of the apps that are Mac-only. So no way am I going to forget this and buy myself some cheap PC CrapTop.

Unfortunately, if you cannot boot from the disc, it won't be possible to do any diagnostic tests yourself.
It might be worth getting a second opinion. Is there an Apple authorized repair shop anywhere near you? If so, possibly you could take it there and see if they can diagnose it. You may need to pay a small fee for them to do this. But possibly someone might take a little more time with it and be able to give you a definitive diagnosis.
I'm grasping at straws, but you might be able to try resetting the SMC:

I don't know if this would help or not--there are not many things to do when the computer is unresponsive and you can't use the keyboard or a disc.
Unless the problem was reported to Apple while the MBP was still under warranty, I don't think there is any way that Apple would be able to fix it under warranty. Did you ever take it in for any problem under warranty that might relate to its current situation?

Powerbook G4 17" won't boot...failed drive or logic board??? HELP!!!!

I am in need of some assistance. My Powerbook no longer works although it chimes when powered up. I have reformatted the hardrive and reinstalled a new operating but still there is no booting up.
**The question that I pose is: hardrive failure or logic board failure.**
I have tried to the Command-Option O+F, I have tried holding down the Option key (which starts the machine sporadically), I have tried the Shift key and also the DVD...nada squada on all of these.
Please help.

Have you inserted the first OS X DVD and rebooted holding the C key down? This would boot from the DVD. Are you able to do that?
Have you run the Apple hardware test? With the OS X DVD that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print, insert it, and reboot holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, click on the arrow pointing to the right, and follow directions. Choose the extended test. Does that tell you anything?

Need help finding the right logic board.

So after months of work, I've come to the conclusion that I've fried it. So I'm pursuit of getting running, I was wondering if anyone could help me find the right logic board. Well, here are my original stats:

Without the serial number your FCE disc is useless and nobody here can help.
Your only chance, if you have the receipt or can prove your purchase is to contact Apple and hope they may be able to help.
