Turn it upside down (open). Do NOT power up. Take it to your nearest Apple store/Genius Bar for damage assessment.

Sharing my experience, water spill accident on my Retina Macbook Pro

I would like to share my experience to the community and to fellow mac users regarding my water spill accident on my 1-week fresh Retina Macbook Pro.
Before begining, i appologize for gramar or spelling mistakes since I am French and English is not my first language.
So lets begin ...
My 2006 macbook pro started giving away and i knew that i had to replace it very soon. So i opted for a high end machine because i knew i needed something for at least 5 years.
After much thought, i bought a Retina Macbook Pro since for work i needed a 15 inch screen laptop and portability was key for me.
Normally at work the Retina Macbook Pro sits on an aluminum Rain Design stand, but on thursday, i was at a co-worker office brain-storming for an important presentation. So i had my Retina macbook pro sitting on a small conference table and next to it i had a cup of water (THE CULPRIT), 200 ml to be precise.
I know, i know ... i shouldn't have been drinking a beverage while using my computer at the same time but i'm always careful with my stuff (proof my 2006 macbook pro still lives).
So enough introduction ... After taking a sip from that cup of water i accidently spilled the cup on my keyboard. To be precise i spilled around 160 ml of tap water on the keyboard while the computer was ON (on battery).
I froze for 5 seconds cursing in French, looking at the puddle of water on my keyboard, then i immediatley FORCED shut down the computer.
I ran for paper towels and started absorbing as much as i can, while absorbing the water my fellow co-worker was helping me, and since the power button is so tiny and placed on the keyboard, he accidently turned it back ON again ... I immediatly turned it back off (forced) and kept on absorbing as much liquid as i can.
To my surprise, we kept on bringing paper towels and absorbing ...The water was just sitting on top of the computer and i had the impression that not a whole much was making it inside.
After finsihing the first cleaning process ... i placed two dry paper towels on the keyboard and closed the screen, fliped the computer upside down so it was sitting on the screen. This was on thursday. I DID NOT DISCONNECT THE BATTERY (since i did not have the necessary tools for Apple's alien screws).
Friday morning, when i arrived at the office, i checked the laptop (still haven't turned it on) ... Paper towels were wet, so i changed them ....
I left it over the weekend at work .... doing some research on water spills ... i decided not to use rice or hair dryers or opening the machine ... i estimated that what could've made it through the inside of the laptop was roughly 20 ml of water that was absorbed by a plastic sheet seperating the keyboard from the logic board.
Monday, D-day, i tried turning the laptop ON and it booted normaly ... i was a bit skeptic, i was thinking maybe the RAM modules were fried or certain keys on the keyboard or the sound controller ... but nothing everything seemed normal.
I just finished running the Apple Hardware Extensive Test and everything seems running fine.
So to all persons who will be in the same case as mine - WATER SPILL - (not coffee, cola, or sugary acidic beverages spill). Turn off the machine as fast as you can, absorb water as much as you can, flip the computer on its screen side while placing paper towels to absorb humidity, time is on your side so the more you wait the better, in my case 3.5 days, and PRAY .
The waranty is probably voided since black sensors inside the machine turns to red as soon as they contact water, (like litnus paper with acids or bases)

9 times out of 10, you cannot, will not, shall NOT get thru same,.......corrosion sets in.
Many people suffer the pain of a "dried out and working notebook".......... only to learn corrosion will soon ruin it.
Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

Water Spilled on 2011 MacBook Pro

Hi all,
I need help as to what to do next and whether or not I have a chance at saving my laptop.
I had a thermos of hot-ish water with a tea bag on my desk next to my 2011 MacBook Pro. My Mac has a keyboard cover, and a hard plastic case on both parts of the laptop.
About 3 ounces of water spilled onto my computer on the left between the keyboard and screen. At contact, the screen went immediately black and within a couple seconds I dried up the water with paper towels. I also removed the cases and cover and dried up the few drops that had leaked through that.
Now my computer is in a cool dry place and I haven't attempted to turn it on at all. I've already made an Apple Store appointment but I want to hear from other users as to what I can do from home.

Youre out of luck, considering the spill and immediate blackout, trying to "dry it out" is a lost cause.
Everyone likes the "dry it out and turn it on" ploy, but it doesnt work, after major damage, not a chance.
Make a service call to Apple for likely logic board replacement and otherwise.

Help I accidently spilled a water battle and some water spilled onto..

My desk, possible small amount inside, on the screen and keyboard.
I got it all cleaned up but the inside if their was any inside. Unplugged my emac and started to clean the emac outside but not inside cause I am not a technical at the inside if their was any water. I booted this up and works like nothing has happen. Also on the screen were it has the border line small amount was inside their but got that cleaned out. Any advises?

If the computer didn't spark and give off the distictive smell of burning insulation when you turned it back on, you're in the clear by now! The seal between a CRT and the bezel of the front case isn't watertight, and it is indeed possible to short out the electronics if a conductive liquid spills onto the CRT glass and runs into the case. This is true of any CRT, not just the eMac. This is also why you'll see warnings not to spray glass cleaner directly onto a CRT (the results can be fairly spectacular with a large-screen CRT TV set, not that you want to find that out firsthand). At least your spill was water, which would leave little if any residue behind. Soda spills can literally eat away ot conductive membrane traces.
Should another water spill occur in the future, the best advice is to shut down immediately and leave the electronic devive involved powered down for one to three days depending on the ambivent humidity. I've seen suggestions, not personally tired but from a reliable source, that if the electronic device in question will fit, you can put it in an over set to its lowest temperture, not more than 160F, with the oven door open for several hours to dry it out. I'd personally stick to letting things air dry.

MacBook Pro 13", Water spilled on keyboard, TWICE!

Is this a miracle or something that my computer has gotten water spilled, like I mean, flooded upon the left side of the keyboard and nothing has happened?
The first time it happened was almost a half full size cup of water and I didn't realize for about 10 seconds. When I saw it, I immediately flipped the computer upside down and it spilled right out. The computer turned off, and was restarted fine. The issue it had for the next 30 minutes was that the battery icon on the menu bar said Connected, but Not Charging.
This was fixed by plugging in the actual power adapter.
Second spill: Today!
About ten minutes ago, water spilled on my macbookpro again. This time it wasn't that much, and absolutely nothing happened to it.
Is there like an Apple Guardian Angel looking down on my Macbook pro? Haha
Or it might just be that this computer is super well-built; which I believe is true.
This computer refuses to have any problems. And when it does, they are fixed instantly.
This is why I love my Macbook Pro.

I hope that while this computer still works, you will quickly give it away to someone who appreciates it enough to take proper care of it. You are getting an absolutely false sense of security about your ability to abuse it without consequences, and that's bound to catch up with you soon.

Help! Water spill, can not power on!

I spilled water on my DV2715 last night. After I tried to drip the water all out, it would not power on. There is not a whisper of power whatsoever. How do I go about taking the laptop apart and find the problem? Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you EVER spill water on a notebook computer, Hope it was OFF when you did, cause if it was on at the time it probably just became a paper weight. If it gets wet, you want to set it in an area with lots of air flow for like a month. Do not plug it in, take the battery out, no not attempt to power it on. You have to allow time for ALL moisture to evaporate out of it, then turn it back on.
In your case there is little hope i'm afraid, if water spills onto the motherboard then it is fried. The only solution is to replace the motherboard along with any other component that may have gotten fried, and you might as well purchase a new notebook. IF you are in Warranty and have accidental damage protection, then it should entitile you to a fix on it.

Peculiar symptoms after water spill

I know there are so many of these questions, but I can't find one that has the same symptoms so I am going to post my question here:
I'm trying to figure out what happened to a macbook that had water spilled on it - I was not present for this incident, so I don't know if the computer was on at the time or how it was taken care of directly after it happened. All I know is that when the charger is plugged in, the green indicator light shows - however, if you press the button on the side that let's you know the battery status, there is nothing (not even one blinking light to say it is not charged). If you press the power button, you hear the drive ramp up for a moment and the light in the front comes on - then 1-2 seconds later it just powers back down and the light turns off, that's it.

You can never tell what sort of damage - or the extent of the damage - that a liquid spill may cause a computer. And it's impossible to diagnose exactly what's wrong without having an Apple tech test the machine.
SO, if I were you, I would take the computer to your local Apple Store or AASP and have them run diagnostics on the machine and an estimate for how much it will cost to fix. Unfortunately, these types of repairs can be very expensive and you may come out better just buying a new machine as liquid spills are considered accidental damage and will not be repaired under AppleCare.

Water spilled underneath MBP, going to apple tomorrow. Will they replace?

So I was at my boyfriends house the other night and his bed just so happens to be on the ground so when I put a glass of water down I accidently kicked it over. Not until hours later had I realized that it had hit my Macbook pro due to the fact that it was making a loud noise (the fan was). I am supposed to be heading to Apple at somepoint this week, what do you think they'll do? I am a college student and cannot afford to buy a new one, nor will my parents buy another. I have had very good experiences with them where they have done a "one time water damage replacement" (they did this with my iPhone 4). PLEASE HELP!!!

Water spill voids the warranty. Dropping voids warrenties.
Apple Genius Bar sets their own policy for charging or not charging for a repair. We are just users.

How long ago did this happen. If you powered the iPhone off immediately, then place it in a bag of uncooked rice for 5-7 days, then try it. If it works, then take the time to make a backup and be ready to replace the device. If it will not work after that, then it is not going to. Water and electronics don't mix. It is not a question of if it will fail, it is when. Apple has out of warranty replacements for this purpose.

I have a an early 2009 13" macbook that had water spilled on it, whats the cheapest way to fix it?

I had water spill on my macbook and it shorted out. the macbook will turn back on but it must be plugged into power, won't run from battery. also the ethernet port is out on it. not sure what else isn't working.

when water is spilled on a mac, do the following:
Turn it off IMMEDIATELY
Remove the battery if the battery is user removable
Call an Apple store or AASP and make an appointment for evaluation so they can accuratley assess the damage and provide and estimate...no one in here can tell you the extent of the damage since we don't physically have the mac.

Water spills on my new Mac book Pro

Water spilled on my Mac Book Pro.
It affected some parts of the screen, the keyboard, and got in to the logic board through the USB & networ ports.
I didnt take away the battery early enough (I did after 2 days).
I later took off the back, the battery and dried it for 3 days but it has since refuced to come up.
Can someone tell me if this Mac is destroyed forever or If I will need to replace the logic board or so? I am currently running a project in western Africa where I dont have an Apple store.
Please help. It may appear this is a physical damage even when I have an existing warranty.

it's best to take it to Apple and have them diagnose the issue....
water + electronics = short circuit.
something inside your macbook probably got shorted out. it could be a simple fix - it could be an expensive fix.
it's best to take it to Apple rather than trying to turn it back on in case some parts inside might still be wet.

Thinkpad Twist Water Spill

Water spill on Twist. Machine doesn't boot. First thing I read is to do is remove the battery ASAP. Discover the Twist battery is not removeable. Please don't bother to send me links to the manual - have gone over it three times and can find no useful instructions in it for this situation. .
I was already really, really regretting my purchase of the Twist and now this battery situation is the icing on top of that cake. If it's going to recover, about how long should I expect it to take to dry out? Anything else I should or can do? Thanks in advance.

As you wish, but the hardware maintenance manual has pretty clear instructions on how to remove the battery pack. What about that didn't suit you?

MINOR water spill, volume trouble...

Today I was sitting on my couch with my Macbook on my lap when my dog jumped on me and, somewhere in the process of catching my laptop, the water I had put on the arm of the couch spilled onto my keyboard. It wasn't a lot and it was in drops; I'm not even sure that anything really got into the keyboard. Everything was working fine, or so I thought, until I realized that the volume isn't working. I can still use the volume keys, but no sound comes out at all when I try to listen to music or move the volume setting up and down. I thought I was doomed, but when I restarted my Mac, this sound (I guess it's the restart sound? It's the first time I've paid attention) came out of it.
So should I just wait it off, or will I have to take it to the Apple Store ? And, if I do, will either my warranty or Apple Care help??

There is no such thing as a 'minor' water spill. A few drops of water in the right place under the right circumstances may be that death knell for a MBP. I urge you not to use it, open it up and let it dry. Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have them check it. The warranty will not cover any damage that may have occurred since it cannot be construed as a manufacturing defect.

Water spilled onto macbook - Need emergency help now, please!

Last night about one cup of water spilled onto my macbook. Basically, it shut down and I made the mistake of trying to turn it on (multiple times).
It is now dry, but it still will not turn on. I do not have apple care, but I still do have a limited warranty.
My question is: what are my options? I need it repaired a.s.a.p. I know everybody says this, but I really do need it for college.
Anyway, again, what is the best option? Can I mail it it for them to fix? What NEEDS to be fixed? If I take it to an apple store (the nearest is about 300 miles away), can they fix it (and on the spot)? How much should this cost?

You can call Apple service. They will have to see it before they can quote a repair price. Not sure what country your in but if it is the US you could also try http://www.macservice.com/macbook.html, They will check it out and give you a quote and they are usually cheaper than Apple on most repairs. You can also do a search for MacBook Repairs and find numerous other sources for repair that may be very close to where you live.

My laptop had water spilled on it 3 days ago, I let it sit as instructed by best buy . I am on it right now but the mouse movement isn't smooth anymore and it is slower. The first time I turned it on it didn't respond at all, how bad is the damage.?
