  • E30 - What VA / Watt rating for UPS? And is "Pure Sine" necessary?

    Hello Erik,
At last, here's my final E30-related query.  It concerns Uninterruptible Power Supplies / UPS (which you've said is really important, especially for RAID 1), and comprises two subquestions -- Q1 I really care about, and Q2 is just out of curiosity.  =)
Q1: What is an appropriate VA / Watt rating for a UPS hooked up to E30 and single LCD monitor?
The E30 will be configured with Xeon E3-1230 processor, 8GB ECC, RAID 1 (7200 rpm), and Quadro 2000;  the Monitor will initially be a 17" IBM ThinkVision (though hopefully someday I'll upgrade to a 21" / 22" Lenovo).
         Would 1000 / 600 VA/Watts be enough?
Q2 (just for fun):  Is a "pure sine" UPS output necessary or desirable for the E30?
    Background:
Unless someone advises differently, I'll be getting a CyberPower "Adaptive Sinewave UPS", as it has the best Newegg reviews among the UPS units I can afford, and I overall like the features.
    http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/adaptive-sinewave-series.html
On the CyberPower website, there's a chart showing which UPS model is recommended for various computers.  The E30 is not on the chart, but the E20 is (together with S20 and D20).  And for the E20, they recommend either their "1350" or their "1500" models, with VA / Watts ratings of [1350 VA / 810 Watts] and [1500 VA / 900 Watts], respectively:
    http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/campaigns/adaptive-sinewave/CyberPower-AdaptiveSinewave-compatibili...
These models are (for me) expensive, and the smaller "1000" model (with [1000 VA / 600 Watts] ) would better fit my budget (and under-desk space).  Is CyberPower being overly-ambitious in their recommendations?  Or should I pay the extra for the bigger models?  (Note that they recommend the "1000" for a Lenovo ThinkCentre M90....)
For that matter, what size UPS do you use for your own system(s)?  =)
And finally, CyberPower lists the Lenovo Thinkstations amongst the machines that require a "Pure Sine" UPS output, because of the "Active PFC" power supplies Lenovo uses.  Is this really true?  I'm interested in the CyberPower irrespective of the Pure Sine output, so this is just idle curiosity -- but can the Thinkstations take a normal stepped UPS output?
Thank you in advance -- this is the last piece to fall in the budgeting puzzle, after which I can order my E30.  Many, many thanks for all the help and guidance!!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thank you, Erik!
Yes, the Cyberpower PFC series gets consistently good reviews on Newegg and Amazon (and the few bad reviews mostly revolve around shipping damage / poor packaging issues, which seem to have been resolved).  I'll take your suggestion of Bigger Capacity => Longer Runtime to heart;  it'll come down to finances, but you've saved me so much already on the RAM and CPU that I might be able to swing the 1500.  =)  But regardless, you've answered all my many questions about E30 configuration and accessories, and I really appreciate all the help.  Hope you're enjoying a beautiful summer (wherever you're based), and kindest wishes to you and yours for the coming year.  Thanks again, and do take care!
                Cheers,

  • Power (amp/watt) requirements for iMac G5...

    Hi,
I like to use my iMac G5 1.8 g 17" for onsite photo printing this spring (drag racing) along with a Canon ip6000 ink jet printer...
My question is in order to determine best power inverter to purchase (will be working out of a car) I need to know the amps/watts these 2 devices need - so far unable to locate this info anybody here can help?
Lastly my initial research of power inverters is the (much more) expensive 'true sine wave' models are needed for laser printers (but no mention of ink jet) should the 'modified sine wave' be PK?Thanks,
    rich56k

Well I went to an electronics shop that sells power inverters...and with their help located the specs needed...turns out they're on the bottom (underside) of the printer 0.62 AMPS and on the bottom of the base on the iMac 2.5 AMPS total power needed 375 watts (use 20% additional for good measure they say) so an inverter rated 450-500 watts should be sufficent....
Regarding the true sine wave vs. modified the shop recommends true sine to be sure (but more expensive) however I've found modified models online that specify being capable of powering home office equip. re: printers and desktop computers worse case is some interference on monitor...
Anyhow - hope this helps someone else down the road!!
As I've gotten plenty of good info here in the past...

  • Voltage range of battery charger for iMac accessories?

Is the US-sold battery charger (for iMac accessories with two batteries charged at once) working from 110 to 230 volts (with US-plug though)? Thanks.
    Pierre

Since the charger is rated at 5 Watts, and you have 5 Watts there that should work.

I sent my keyboard that came with my iMac back to  for a replacement it was a

  • IMac 24" 2.4GHz ship estimates

I ordered the iMac 24" 2.4GHz and it says Ships 5 to 7 Business days. Does anyone know if theirs actually shipped at 5 days? Just curious, today is the 5th day!

I, too, ordered the 24" 2.8 Core2 Extreme iMac back on August 13th, along with a White Macbook. Both were ordered on the same day. On my original invoice receipt, it has it down that the Macbook mentioned the "Ships within 24 hours" and the iMac said "Ships 3-5 Days".
The Macbook arrived on the 15th, and I noticed that the online order status for the iMac changed from the original "Ships in 3-5 days" to a message saying "Custom Configuration" and "Expected to Ship 5-7 days". The only thing I changed during the time of purchase in the cart from the defaults was adding the extended apple care.
I Received a message from apple on the last day of the 5-7 day period saying that due to reasons beyond their control, the new shipping date was Aug. 28-30. I spoke with the Apple Business Agent that I bought the computers through, and he mentioned that they got a memo from Apple saying how MANY business agents were calling to complain about the shipping delays, and in Apple's memo it stated, and I quote, "...The delay in shipment of iMacs is due to a delay in shipping..."
Not sure what that means, but thought I might add my two cents to this thread.

  • USB Powered HDD fails - Alu iMac 2.4GHz 21 inch

    Hey folks,
I have an aluminium iMac 2.4GHz 21 inch model.
I have been using externally powered USB and FW devices for a while and had no issues. However, I just picked up a USB powered HDD and it cannot consistently transfer data. This same drive works perfectly on my Dell laptop, and I tried another USB powered drive from a friend (which I also know works) on my iMac and it has the same problem - cannot do any sort of mass data transfer.
I have a powered USB 2 hub (4 port Belkin) and obviously three ports on the iMac.
I also have two externally powered drives, both of which work fine.
It appears that any transfers from the INTERNAL drive to a USB Powered drive work ok, but any significant transfers from a USB drive (externally powered) to the USB powered drive FAIL.
I have tried plugging the USB powered drive into the iMac directly, and into the USB powered hub, no difference.
I suspect that the USB on the iMac just cannot handle either the power requirements or the data throughput requirements.
The external USB powered drives are:
    Western Digital Passport 250GB.
    Iomega Select 500GB.
Any hints? Or is this desktop machine just not made to work with USB powered devices???

If your two powered external drives are always connected to the iMac, you should really reformat them to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+, and not use a Windows format. There are other limitation to FAT32, because it is an old file system from a time when hard drives were very small. One is that data is not stored as efficiently, so the same files (especially if there are a lot of small files) will take up more space on the drive. Another potential conflict is file naming convention; an allowed file name on one may not be allowed in the other (between a Windows format and a Mac format). There is also no journaling with FAT32, which is a feature that helps with data corruption issues. There are probably other disadvantages to using FAT32 on a Mac.
As a test with that external USB-powered drive (the one you own), you should use Disk Utility to reformat it to a Mac format. Then, try the file transfer again. If it works, then the cause was the existing formatting, although the exact reason may not be clear. If you need it to be FAT32, you can try using Disk Utility to format it as +MS-DOS (FAT)+. Maybe if the Mac does the formatting, it will resolve this problem, even it is still formatted as FAT32 (and it should still work on a PC).
When going from Mac format to Windows format on the entire drive, you may want to use the Disk Utility Partition tab, and not the Erase tab. On the Partition tab, reset the +Volume Scheme+ to one partition. Click the Options button and it will show the three possible choices for +Partition Map Scheme+. When you format it as +MS-DOS (FAT)+, select +Master Boot Record+. When you format it as +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+, select +GUID Partition Table+.

How do I add a widget to give a review or star rating for a book at the end of a book in iBooks Author? You know, how you buy books on iBooks and when you're finished reading it, there's a place where you can give a rating or review right there on the very last page?

Just supply a link that says 'Review This Book' - use http://itunes.apple.com/linkmaker/ to generate one.

Install more RAM in the computer; the Mac needs to have at least 2GB of RAM and should have 4GB or more first.

  • How do I make a private album in new Photos for IMac?

How do I make a private album in the new Photos for IMac? I had one in iPhoto, and now that all the photos migrated to Photos my private album is not hidden anymore. Thanks for help!

Photos does not hide photos in albums at all.  Photos can only be hidden from Moments, Collections, Years.
If you want private albums, move the photos in questions to a different Photos Library, that you keep hidden.

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.
