Wav import - wavs displayed on stereo file appear identical.

I import a wav file, stereo, with 2 instruments on it. One instrument is on the LEFT channel, the other is on the Right channel. Once GarageBand displays it, the wavs look identical. They sound different, as I can pan left and right and hear different instruments, but the wav graph is identical for each channel.
What's up with this...?

OK I got around to trying different formats, to see if that is the problem.
I've converted them from CD (created with a CD burner as CD Audio Files),to all 5 formats that ITUNES converts to, making sure I choose stereo. (wav,mp3,lossless,aac,aiff).
I've imported each into GB, and the same problem exists no matter the format.
The wav form displayed for each channel is identical. Panning left or right isolates the instruments, verifying they should display differently.
Difficult to trust anything GB displays I would think, until we know what it's doing and why.

  • Stereo wavs with no stereo content

I have a lot of WAV files (thousands!)
They are currently all stored as stereo, although many of them are actually mono, but I don't have a list of which are which.
Because there are so many, for size reasons, it would be useful for me to "throw away" half of all the mono files.
In iTunes help, I read ...
*Choosing AIFF and WAV custom import settings*
*Channels: ... Auto converts monaural tracks into mono files and stereo tracks into stereo files.*
If I import all the WAVs, would iTunes be able to analyze them and convert all the files with no stereo content to mono files and leave the true stereo files as they are?

As far as I know the chip does not include this and there is no way to upgrade this
PS: this has nothing to do how much the notebook cost there are many different notebooks on the market which costs a lot of money and dont support some features due to the different chip.... and there are a lot of notebooks you could get for favourable price and support Realtek sound chip.

  • Can you record sound using a USB 6211 and convert the data to a .wav (or other sound) file?

    Hello,
I am trying to build a system that will use a USB 6211 to record sounds from multiple electret microphones and then save the data as a .wav file or other sound file.  I have already built my mics and hooked the mics up to the USB 6211; the DAQ device seems to do an adequate job recording the signal - I've recorded from 3 mics at a time at 11,025 Hz, although I don't know how good the signals are since I can't save them for playback after the fact, and they aren't going through my sound card. Ultimately, I would like to save the data as a multichannel audio file which I could then open in a program such as Audacity for further editing and analysis. Since Audacity can import a variety of sound files, my file format doesn't need to be .wav if another format would work better.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Eric

If you are sampling all three simultaneously, your highest frequency recordable will be (11,025/2)/3, so about 1800Hz and that will pretty coarse (traditionally digital sound recording is at 44Ks/s at the low end). As to converting to a .wav, there are functions on the "Graphics and Sound" palette for saving waveforms to a .wav file.

  • JPG´s will not import into lightroom 1.4.1 ("the file appears to be unsupported or damaged")

I have converted a collection of raw files with Autopano pro to jpgs.
When importing them into lightroom 1.4.1, part of the collection is not displayed in lightroom and the software gives me the msg "the file appears to be unsupported or damaged".
The same files open up with any other jpg supporting software.
Can anybody help me with this

I was not aware of this pano program but have downloaded a trial copy and will give it a go. I just did a set of images that PTGUI could not deal with and it looks like this program did it perfectly even without muddling with the control points. Its also dealing with 1 image where I cropped out a conflicting angle of view area.
I just imported the jpeg out of this package into LR with no problems. I edited it after import to LR with Photoshop CS3 to do a cleanup crop of the pan.
I'm very impressed with PanoPro right now. Will have to purchase. PLUS...it runs either Mac or PC!!! Solves yet another problem I've had with my conversion to Apple.

  • Wave vs Windows Media File sizes

I installed iTunes on my Windows PC. I have a tune on my PC that is a Windows Media File that is 4626 kb. I imported the tune to iTunes and it converted it to Wave Sound and the file size is now 50,665 kb which is more than ten times bigger than the Windows Media file. As a test I then did this with a couple of albums and the same thing happened with all the selections on each album. It seems like I need ten times the disk space when using iTune than when using Windows.
Can anyone explain what is happening here.
    Thanks
    Ted

WMF (and MP3 and AAC) is a compressed and lossy format. You lose sound quality.
WAV is not. A WAV is the same size as the file on a regular audio CD, usually ~35-75 MB.
When you convert from a lossy format (WMF) to lossless format (WAV) the quality will be the same.
If you convert between WMF/AAC/MP3, you quality will go down each time.
When you convert between formats, you should always start off with the best possible quality (WAV or AIFF or CD).
With iTunes the default format is AAC 128 kbps.
This is a good compromise between file size and sound quality.
AAC is a higher quality sound when using the same bitrate as an MP3.
AAC and MP3 will be very close to the same file size when using the same bitrate.
However, 128 kbps AAC will sound at least as good as a 160 kbps MP3 and the AAC will be about 2/3 the size.
I use AAC 160 kbps. I can definitely hear the difference between 128 and 160 kbps AAC.
If you are importing from CDs, you should use AAC 128 kbps (but I recommend 160 kbps).
Open iTunes prefs -> Advanced -> Importing.
This is where you can change the Import settings.

  • Mono files displayed as stereo in arrange window

Hi there everyone. This is my first post and thanks to all the help from all your other posts. here's my question:
I did a recording in ProTools of a Jazz Combo with a Decca Tree and three spot mics. Normally I just load the files from the ProTools "audiofiles" folder into Logic and all is great but on this session Logic is reading the center and right Decca tracks as stereo files. They are not stereo, but mono and Quicktime-Get Info: says they are mono as does clicking on them and selecting "Get Info". Why would they appear as stereo files? They are showing up in the Mixer window as mono channel strips and in the Arrange window and the Audio Window they are listed as stereo. When panning the three Decca tree tracks Left, Center and Right I get a totally mono signal according to the Helper Plugin inserted on the Master Out bus. The file names are also not being copied to the track names properly. Any help would be wonderful as I need to get this mix done ASAP.
    Thanks:)

Once you have dragged the files into the arrange page, look at the channel strip for that track and make sure that the button at the button is toggled to mono. Each track in arrange can handle a stereo or mono file. The LED type thing which shows the level toggles between mono look ... and stereo look.

  • Is it possible to import and display/plot (Google Earth) KML files as overlays in Mac OS 10.9 Maps application?

Is it possible to import and display/plot (Google Earth) KVM files as overlays in Mac OS 10.9 Maps application?
Here is the particular application: (note I haven't gotten the code to compile yet -- seems to be several differently named environment variables in Mac unix than in Linux that are making the compile blow up -- but that's another issue) there is a freeware application that can do radio path loss prediction and plot path loss contours on a map. It has an option to output the data as KML files which can be imported into Google Earth, in order to display the path loss contours on Google Earth maps. I guess you could liken it to displaying overlays of GIS-like data in Google Earth. I would like to know if there is a mechanism to facilitate importing KML data files to overlay (preferably in a translucent fasion so that you could see the underlying map) onto Mac OS 10.9 Maps?

    Regards.
    As I stated, "possibly."
While the commerce side of it has little to do with the KML files, per se, the API for the layer data should allow for any type of overlay.
Also, the patent was filed Dec 19, 2013. There was a related patent filed in 2012. Not sure what it is about.

  • Treat JPEG files next to raw files as seperate files still imports and displays them as seperate images

Hi, I am taking RAW + JPEG files on a Nikon D810. The RAW files are saving to a CF (primary slot) and JPEGs to an Eye-Fi card (secondry slot). When I am importing into Lightroom 5 directly from the camera, even though I have 'Treat JPEG files next to raw files as seperate files' UNchecked in preferences, it still imports and displays them as seperate images. I am trying to import the JPEG as a sidecar file only to the RAW file as I have read about but this is not happening, any ideas why? Thanks

Well in Lightroom they are apart from each other before the actual import, all the JPGs list first then all the NEF files next. The same actual photo as the NEF or as the JPEG both have the same file name apart from the .JPG or .NEF so that is not the problem. The NEFs go to the CF card and the JPGs go to the EyeFi SD card, I think you are onto the issue but I'm not sure what I need to do to fix it. I guess I need to change a setting on the D810 itself. There really doesn't seem to be any other settings apart from the RAW + JPEG vs only one or the other and allocating which card is primary for the RAWs and which card is secondry for the JPEGs. I really need the JPEGs to go to the EyeFi SD (secondary) for live iPad image viewing and not to the same primary card (CF) as the NEFs (RAWs) go. This does seem to be a typical setup so I would think it has been encountered before.
Thanks for your help any other advise is appreciated.

  • Importing Stereo files in Logic

I am trying to import stereo interleaved audio files into Logic Pro 9.  When I do, the stereo files import as mono files and won't play.  Is there any way around this, or is Logic only designed for mono files?  This does not seem logical, although maybe it's because I have not yet been initiated into the cult.
There is also an interesting thing in that for some reason in my version of Logic, when you mute a track from the mixer, it does not light the M button in the Arrange window, and vice versa.  Is this the way it was designed or have I accidentally hit a wrong and destroyed my ability to ever mix in Logic again....

Stereo files import as stereo files for more than 99.99 % of Logic users, so... make sure you have Universal Track Mode enabled in the coreaudio preferences.
Also in the preferences there is a setting to make the mute (and solo) buttons in the Mixer and Arrange independent of eachother or to link them to eachother.
    Logic Pro>Preferences>Audio>General
set Track Mute/Solo to Fast (Remote Channel Strips) (=linked).
The names of both those settings could be more obvious though (like Linked vs Independent or something like that).
O, and it is not a cult, not even remotely. Logic is being used by all religions, and also by atheïsts.
I adore Logic, but I would never worship it.

  • HT2905 Is there an update for the newest version of iTunes. This option File Display Duplicates no longer appears under file.

Is there an update for the newest version of iTunes. This option "File > Display Duplicates" no longer appears as an option under "File." I just got a new PC and copied my music files onto a portable drive from my old PC and pasted them into the iTunes folder on the new PC. It appears there are several duplicate files. Looking to delete my duplicate songs as simply as possible instead of single track by singe track. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Importing Stereo File to Two Mono Tracks?

I have a stereo audio file. I'd like to put it into GB2 with one side of the stereo file as one mono track and the second side of the stereo file as a second mono track.
Is there any way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Leon

Leon, Here is a file explaining what Monomaker does.
Monomaker is a simple mono-merging and stereo-recentering utility plugin.
You can use the mono merge parameter to progressively merge your stereo audio channels into a single mono signal. Turning mono merge all the way up to 1 will make your sound completely mono. Turning mono merge all the way down to 0 will leave your audio unaffected.
You can then recenter your signal using the pan parameter. The panning is equal power (meaning that as you move further over to one channel, sound from the other channel is copied over to the first channel in order to keep the total volume consistent).
Also, in case it's useful, you can re-route the 2 input streams in a variety of ways by using the input selection parameter. "Left-right" means that everything is normal, "right-left" means that the left and right streams are swapped, "left-left" means that you lose the right stream and get the left stream copied to both inputs, and "right-right" means that you lose the left stream and get the right stream copied to both inputs.
Monomaker's signal path is input selection first, then mono merge, then pan.
I have just downloaded it myself and have not looked at it yet. I apologize in advance for not checking it first before posting it. It may or may not help you, and I do not know if it works in Garageband.
Here is the site I got it from

  • Odd issue when splitting stereo files..

One very useful feature in AA CS 5.5 is splitting stereo wavs into two mono files. I work in games developer and need this.
But an issue has arisen with a tool I use that converts to a particular format for Sony PSP games: it doesn't like these split files. It's fine with the stereo files and with other mono samples, but not the product of the "Split to Mono" function.
Does something happen to the .wavs when this is carried out; are they 'different' in some way? Opening them and using "Save As.." to create a new file solves the problem but it would be good to know why it's happening.

  • How do I bounce two mono split stereo files to one mp3?

Might sound like a stupid question, but I have several problems:
I bounced a waveburner-mix of my favorite songs as a split stereo file and inserted the two files in two logic mono audio tracks.
First problem: Do I have to pan the left audio-track left and the right to the right or do I keep them centered?
Second problem: The two tracks are louder than the original track. (no matter, if they are panned or centered. Shouldn´t the original have the same volume at my output-channel?
Third problem: Is it possible to bounce more than 2 GB with Logic 8? The mix is very long and when I want to bounce it, logic tells me that it is too big. Can I bounce larger files with logic 9 under OS 10.6?

    Felix Bartelt wrote:
Last question remaining: Can I bounce larger files under Logic 9 and OS 10.7. or does L9 also have the 2 GB restriction?
No and no. The file size restriction is not Logics' restriction, it is a restriction of the file type itself. To be able to bounce longer and/or bigger files, use .caf.
    From the manual:
+AIFF: The AIFF file format cannot handle audio file recordings larger than 2 GB:+
++For 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo files, this equals a recording time of about 3 hours and 15 minutes.+
    +For 24-bit, 96 kHz, 5.1 surround files, this equals a recording time of about 20 minutes.+
+WAVE (BWF): The WAVE file format cannot handle audio file recordings larger than 4 GB:+
+For 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo files, this equals a recording time of about 6 hours and 30 minutes.+
    +For 24-bit, 96 kHz, 5.1 surround files, this equals a recording time of about 40 minutes.+
+CAF: If the size of your recording exceeds the above limits, choose the CAF (Apple Core Audio Format) file format, which can handle the following recording times:+
    +About 13 hours and 30 minutes at 44.1 kHz+
    +About 6 hours at 96 kHz+
    +About 3 hours at 192 kHz+
+The bit depth and channel format—mono, stereo, or surround— *do not affect* the maximum recording size of CAF files.+

  • Strange .plist Files Appearing in Preferences

Hi. I've posted this on the Waves forum as well as Digidesign, but just in case anyone here has seen something similar happen, I thought I would ask here as well...
When I start up Pro Tools 7.4.2 and select any of the Waves plug-ins, the following 12 .plist files appear in my User/Library/Preferences folder:
    com.AdatemsDesign.NewQuality.plist
    com.AltenearTechnology.DynaOnline.plist
    com.AltenearTechnology.Infinisys.plist
    com.AtenetsCorporation.Exocarp.plist
    com.IncorPartners.Decompose.plist
    com.LtrumIncorporated.Exocarp.plist
    com.micrologyasia.cytoplasm.plist
    com.Orangesource.Bibliographer.plist
    com.REFTechnology.Enterprisedigital.plist
    com.syspartners.achlorhydria.plist
    com.systel.transmit.plist
    com.Utilineau.Remove.plist
These files only appear when Waves plug-ins are used. I was unable to do any online search for these .plist files or even the odd "corporation-like" naming; and this is what has me concerned. The Digidesign people say "contact Waves", the Waves people say "those aren't our files", but still they appear -- even after two complete wipes and re-installs.
Has anyone encountered anything like this before? Regardless of the software used?
    Thanks!

That's funny -- I copy/pasted the .plist from TextEdit into the message; it was just a couple of upward arrow symbols. You can see on the second one that's all that shows on the raw text of the file.
I wonder if it's not some kind of placeholder or security thing. Still I am surprised that it did not turn up in an internet search.
If you wanted to, you could delete one of them and then create a plain empty text file with the identical name but change the permissions so that only you can read/write it - not even the system and see what happens. Does it still get replaced by the other one, or does something "complain" about not being able to write a file etc.
It is indeed a very curious thing.

  • Podcast app not displaying all synced files

One of my feeds is displaying only one file, even if multiple files are synced. I'm trying to play "This American Life," where I have downloaded the files manually and I import them into iTunes and convert them to a Podcast type. Then, I sync them to my iPhone 4.
What's happening is that I'll have one file displayed, e.g., "511" but none other. In iTunes, however, I have synced many files: 511, 510, 509, and so on. However, they are not displayed in the podcast app. However, when I search for the files in ios, they appear searchable, but clicking on them only opens the podcast app to This American Life where there is only one file displayed.
So far I've resynced podcasts many, many times. I've uninstalled the app from both the iPhone and iTunes, selected "Do not sync podcasts" and then reinstalled everything and attempted to only sync one file at a time. I've restarted my phone multiple times and I've updated to 7.0.4, all of which have no effect.
    Anyone have any ideas?
