Which sound files work best with FCP...Wav or quicktime.mov?

Cool. so i import my sound clips from a cd into itunes which changes it into the aiff. right? then import into FCP, Sound about right? it's been a while.

Assigning app to .WAV file

I've got a dandy new audio recorder (Edirol R-09) that records WAV files onto SD cards, connects via USB. When I connect the recorder to my OS9 G3, the WAV file shows up with a RealPlayer icon. When I double click the file, my RealPlayer crashes with a Type 1 error.
I've gone into the File Exchange control panel, made sure that WAV files are assigned to QuickTime Player. Other WAV files in my computer do show up as QuickTime icons and open properly in QT. When I hook the recorder up to an OSX iMac, the WAV file does show up as a QuickTime icon.
How can I get my system to properly label and open these files as QuickTime files?

If you made the link-WAV-to-QuickTime Player association in File Exchange in the File Translation section, try also making it in the PC Exchange section.
Nonetheless, Finder may try to open those files with RealPlayer. In OS 9, if a file has File Type and Creator codes Finder will search for an application which matches those; if Finder locates one such it will attempt to use it, regardless of the settings in File Exchange. The settings in File Exchange are used only when Finder can not locate an application that matches the codes. If those files were given codes that match RealPlayer, then that is what Finder will try to use.
The solution when that happens is to do one of two things -
• Hide the appplication you don't want used, so that Finder can't try to use it. One way to do that is to delete the 'wrong' program; however, if there is a recurring though occasional need for it, doing that can be inconvenient. A less inconvenient way is to compress it using Stuffit (or DropStuff), keeping the Stuffit archive but tossing away the original. A fresh copy of the program can be extracted from the archive when needed.
• Change the File Type and Creator codes of the files to those that match the program you want to use. If the files are on the hard drive, that is relatively easy to do using either FileBuddy or FileTyper. If they remain on the attached device's media, that may not be easy to do - and may be impossible.

Final Cut Pro X - Share - Export Media - H.264 - Audio is panned to the left?!

My video has a soundtrack that is a stereo .WAV that I can play in QuickTime with no problem.
I added the .WAV to my FCPX project, exported H.264 of the finished video, and when I play the resulting file in QuickTime, the audio is panned to the left. There is still some stereo separation but it's like the right channel has been turned down. Alternately playing the video and the original .WAV in QuickTime makes it extremely obvious, but it's actually noticeable (and very annoying) even without the comparison.
Does this happen to anyone who exports H.264 via the Share -> Export Media menu item, or is it something in my project? (I didn't do anything to the audio apart from dragging it onto the timeline - I tried deleting the audio and dragging the file back on again but it still ends up panned to the left in the output).

It was set to Surround and 48Khz. I set it to Stereo (and 44.1Khz for good measure, as that is the sample rate of my soundtrack) and then re-exported to H.264, and now the audo is perfectly centered.
So that's perfect, thanks.
Now the only thing wrong with FCPX is how it crashes every ten minutes or so!

Reason why FCPX 10.0.3 is constantly hanging

How to reproduce the beach-ball hanging problem I am experiencing in Final Cut Pro 10.0.3.
Open Activity Monitor (Not part of the bug, but to monitor disk activity)
• Make sure an Event created in 10.0.2 (Or possibly earlier) is in the Events Folder, and will be opened. In the event must be some standalone MP3 audio files.
• Open Final Cut Pro 10.0.3 (I am using an iMac 27" 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5, 12GB RAM, Mac OSX Lion 10.7.2)
• In the Event are MP3 Audio files.
• Click an audio file. FCPX will hang. Look at Activity Monitor, and under disk activity you'll see your HD being read at around 15.5mb/s while FCPX is "scanning" or doing something with the audio file. After some time (depending on how big the MP3 is) it will finish and give you back control.
• This will repeat for EVERY MP3 file.
• This happens only once per file, but will repeat all over again if you close FCP.
Some notes about the MP3 files: They were recorded on a Zoom H1 recorder at 44.1khz, 320kbps. Some of the files were opened and edited, and resaved into that format.
This problem seems connected to beach-ball hanging across the program. When working on a project, if there is an audio file anywhere involved (compound clip, on timeline) the app will hang, scan that file, then resume.

Can anyone else confirm this audio issue? If you are not having this problem, maybe its a clue to how to get my FCP Event working properly again.

After I posted about my own audio issue I spent probably 3 hours on the phone with Apple. Before calling them I had narrowed it down to it crashing for audio files but hadn't narrowed it to mp3s. After they couldn't figure it out, I trouble shooted it and figured out that my problem is exactly as you described here, except that it would 'hang' for very long times because most the mp3s I work with are 2 or more hours in length. I was calling it crashing because I'd force quit just to stop it. I called them back on my support ticket and they indeed confirmed that it was an issue, and a bug they had not found yet and were going to report it to their engines. They did not have a fix for it.
I deleted the files in the original media in my event, reencoded all mp3s to wav using quicktime 7 or audacity and then relinked them in the events. Everything works fine now. My projects started without a hitch.
One of the pitfalls of FCPX for me has been how easy it was to use compressed media. Using Wav or AIFF is standard production practice and I had become lazy with FCPX. Guess I should of known!

I can't import music from my computer into Itunes

I've been trying to import music from my computer into Itunes, And it isnt working
I have the latest version of Itunes
When I try adding the files by clicking add file in Itunes or by dragging, it does nothing
I know it means that the file is incompatible with Itunes, But I have put the same type of file into Itunes before with no issues (MP3)

Movie to ipod(320 x 480), why always 44100 kHz?

when I view the info about the video I converted for ipod, the audio sample rate is always 44100, no matter what the .wav file audio rate is supplied. (I am using a 48000 wav into quicktime pro 7.0.4)
why is this?.
the options box is grayed out so I can not force quicktime to convert @ 48000 not 44100...
my exact process that causes this...
take video file into mainconcept mpeg encoder to de-interlace and reduce to 320 240. (mpeg2 stream type (video) to generate the mpeg video.
use mainconcept mpeg encoder to generate audio wav file from same video file (mpeg2 stream type 'elementary audio' audio mode 'WAV') to generate the sound file @ 16-bit (little Endian), Stereo, 48000 kHz.
import video into Quicktime 7.0.4, and add audio to video via (open audio file/ select all/ copy
then in video file window 'add to movie', then export/ movie to ipod(320 x 480).

thanks for the reply, but you are confusing sample freq. with sample rate.
reducing the sample frequency, reduces the maximum freq that can be reproduced (nyquist) so 22050 has the effect of removing all frequencies above 11025...
I want the sample freq to remain the same because any resampling of the freq reduces the quality of the audio.
I figure since the input audio is @48000 and ipod export downconverts it to 44100 @ 128kbs it must sound worse than if the frequency remained at 48000 (dvd audio freq)
(my feeling is that it is a bug in the 'movie to ipod(320 x 480)' settings.
ipod export uses avc(h264)(or mpeg-4 part 10) (basically it adds an in-loop deblocker etc (so that noise is reduced and hence better video)
and mpeg-4 is not as efficent. (in terms of bitrates)

I can't import mp3 downloads I have into iTunes.

I have tried to drag the mp3 file and drop it directly into my iTunes but it wont show the song in my library. Doing this worked up until about a week ago and now I can't seem to be able to import any of my mp3 files. I've tried going into 'File' and clicking on 'add file to library' and selecting the mp3 file i want to import and it doesn't say that there is a problem with transferring it but none of the songs will show up in my library still and it's extremely frustrating.

WMP missing codec error msg

I am exporting an .mp3 to .wav using Quicktime Pro on Mac OS X. I then try to open the newly created .wav file on a PC with WMP 9. I get an error message saying I am missing the proper codec and the song won't play.
Any suggestions on how I can get this to work for me?

Convert the material to ProRes.
Drag your h.264 file into Compressor's Project window and drop it on the bar that says "drag settings and destinations here"
Go to the "settings" window.
Drill down to Apple>Formats>Quicktime>Apple ProRes 422 (LT)
Drag it over and drop it on the window where your you put your original file.
Set a destination.
Click submit.
This will transcode your h.264 to ProResLT. bring that file into FCP and life will be good. If you have dozens of these files, Compressor will easily handle batch processing.
While Compressor is cranking away on your file, open up the Compressor help file and read up. It is a very powerful utility.

Cannnot install Flash Player 11

I get access to virtually all contetns everywhere with my Flash 10 (Firefox, Windows 7), except that I have to click every time on the "activate plugins" red button in the left corner of the Firefox address line, but one particular site asks specifically to install Flash 11 and does not let me in otherwise.
I'm installing it again and again, not getting any error messages, and ending on the Adobe Web-page saying that the installation was successful (I can actually see Flash 11 among my installed programs), yet no site then believes that I have any Flash installed, all suggesting that I "get Adobe Flash Player" (not even the red button appears in the addres bar to help me out).
Strangely, once, after 1.5 hrs of re-installing, I began getting access with my Flash 11 to all sites. Yet this was gone after rebooting, so I'm back to square one.

I'm using FCP 6.0.6 and am trying to adjust the speed of an audio clip and some odd things are happening.
If I change the speed of a clip to, say, 130%, the clip shortens appropriately, but the audio don't change. It just crops it off. And in the speed dialog box, the drop down menu is grayed out and Constant Speed is chosen.
If I choose to slow down the clip, to say 75%, everything seems to work. The audio is slowed, the clip lengthens, but then I can't change it to anything else. It says slow regardless of any adjustments in the speed dialog box. I have to go back through "Undo"s to get it to change.
Am I doing something wrong? I read some questions about this with people using FCP 7 and that seems like how mine should be working.

Well, it is an .AIFF file converted from .WAV in Quicktime. It is 187.5 megs and has a datarate of 344.5 k/sec. It is stereo at 44.1K and has a 32-bit Floating point.
That help? I actually just was able to do the time compression in Soundtrack Pro. But I'm sure I've done it in the past directly in FCP.

Lyrics Wont Save

*Is anyone else having this problem? In iTunes, I manually enter lyrics in the "lyrics tab", hit ok but when I reopen the "info", the lyrics are missing. Also I've tried this on music files and on movie(mpeg4) files. Help states lyrics can't be edited for wav or quicktime files but these are neither. These files are in my library, by the way. Though it doesn't work whether I enter them on the computer files or the ipod files, I've tried both! Any suggestions?*

When you write lyrics, it is changing (well, trying to change) the actual music file.
So if the lyrics don't "take", perhaps it's a Vista permissions issue?
Give yourself FULL control over the music folder and all its subfolders.
Then restart itunes.

ITunes can no longer read WAV files that QuickTime still can

I don't known what happened, but iTunes doesn't want to read some of my WAV files anymore. The strangest thing is that QuickTime still does read them. But when I double-click on the track in iTunes, it moves immediately to the next one in the list.
Here are some of the details about the WAV files given by iTunes:

Yes, I its low-quality voice recording.
When I try to convert one of these WAV files to MP3, I get an error message that says that iTunes can either not read from or write to the disk.
Something must have changed in an update to iTunes. I was sent such a WAV file by email a while ago; at the time, I had managed to convert it to MP3 using iTunes. I dug up this WAV file from my email archive, and now iTunes cannot convert it to MP3 nor play it anymore.

HTTP Streaming WAV audio no longer works with quicktime 7.7.3 OSX or 7.7.5 in windows

The latest revisions of quicktime (as plugin) no longer play our webservice's streamed audio files. The audio is simply encoded wav all javascript hooks seem to work properly, but there is no resulting audio output. Reverting to previous revisions of quicktime on the same platforms restores the expected behavior.
The files are streamed over authenticated HTTPS connections and are encoded as "RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, ITU G.711 mu-law, stereo 8000 Hz". If the file is downloaded to the local machine, the quicktime player application has no problems playing the audio. Similarly, dropping a file: URL to the download into the web browser also plays correctly. The issue started with Quicktime 7.7.3 on OSX with Safari (Yosemite) and 7.7.5 on Windows (Chrome and Firefox). Mavericks and previous Windows quicktime plugins work correctly. This is especially problematic for our Mac OS clients because we have not been able to identify a current working combination or a functional downgrade path other than to downgrade the OS to Mavericks.
Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I do not have access to a Windows 7 computer nor do I run Windows on my Mac.
I am not a web coding programmer. However...
Neither of the original poster's links (http://openmap.bbn.com/~mthome/quicktimeaudio.html and http://openmap.bbn.com/~mthome/wavtest.wav) work because they both point to the same HTML (quicktimeaudio.html) file.
The HTML file looks like this:
This file appears to look for the QT plug-in to see if QT is installed, if the version is v7.7.6, and whether or not the WAV extension is supported.
When I click on either link, this is what I see:
Although I am running:
the browser display shown above indicates the HTML code thinks that QT is not installed rather than being the wrong version and then, instead of terminating the browser processing and displaying the correct error message, the HTML code falls through to a display of the audio media controller and automatically starts playback. Unfortunately, since confirmation of WAV playback support was skipped (or for some other reason), the QT plug-in does not access the required codec (or fails to send the data to the handler) and no audio is heard when playing the WAV audio file. In short, even though I am not a web programmer, I believe the main issue here is the coding of the HTML file.
When I "re-containered" the original poster's WAV file and posted it on my own server, I created a URL link that actually pointed to the WAV resource and not to the HTML file code as did the OP's secondary link. Thus, when I accessed the audio file, I did so directly via the plug-in, by-passing the HTML file code issue and allowing the file data to play correctly in Safari under both Yosemite and IOS 8.
Believe the HTML file needs to be re-coded to fix the problem. I can now play the original 8-bit µ-law encoded WAV file in players and Safari but believe the OP here should consider a more modern compression format/file container combination that would allow him to abandon use of the QT player plug-in to maintain compatibility with "plug-in free" browsers. For instance, would HTML5 coding be able to play AAC encoded content in MOV, MP4, M4V, and/or M4A file containers? Once again, questions like this are beyond my expertise and need to be answered by someone proficient in this area.
