Wave, aiff, sd2

Does anyone know the difference of wave, aiff and sound designer 2 files?
I dont know which one to choose

There's no difference when it comes to what you hear. You may just find that if you are transferring stuff between yourself and someone who owns and old protools system that SD2 works better, as it was designed by digidesign, and sometimes programs on PC's are more compatible with WAV.
Personally I use AIFF and have NEVER had a problem with it. Plus it takes seconds to convert it anyways.

  • Error Message when Exporting to Wave, Aiff or SD2

I can export to mp3 no problem but when i try to export to wave, aiff or sd2 files i get the following message: Could Not Create File - The export file could not be created. This may have occurred because there is insufficient disk space, or there might be a problem with the directory permissions. All my directories are unlocked and writable (plus Im using the same folder for the mp3's) & I have over 80 gb in total!, please help!

Ok, I have trashed my final cut preferences, I checked and my external hard drive is set to mac osx extended. I ran disk utility, I exported to quicktime movie using current settings with movie self contained checked and I get the error message right away. Then I did it without self contained checked and it goes to 21% and I get the error message. Everytime it says this: File I/O error, that is all it says. What does this mean? What can I do next? I have a deadline for this project. I have alot of memory left on my external hard drive. This has never happened before. Thanks for all your help guys.

  • Proxy workflow limitations with .wav&.aiff, & alpha channels

Is it true that FCP 10.1.4's proxy only works only on  regular a/v movie clips? So far I cannot get any of the .wav or .aiff to be in the proxy. It will not let me transcode to proxy option. Also, the alpha channel in proxy doesn't exist. Any workaround to the audio proxy? I was thinking of copying that locally to the small hdd on the road.

Proxy media is designed to assist playback for large and high data rate files. It's not designed as a mobile offline system. To accommodate that workflow you have to manually add the additional files that are needed. The ProRes Proxy codec does not have a transparency channel..

  • How do you display the file "kind" e.g. .wav, aiff, etc  on the information bar on iTunes

I'm new to apple and just successfully ripped a CD to iTunes in apple lossless. How do I get iTunes to display the music file type? I'm using an older upgraded hand me down early 2008 macbook pro.
    Thanks !
    Jim

I use an older iTunes version but I can select "kind" in the view options window to get the file type to show.  However, I am not sure if they have changed this in recent iTunes since others mention using "kind" to switch between audiobooks, podcasts, etc. which mine definitely does not fo.

  • When I bounce in the Wave or MP3 file is distorted or saturated (with bounce in AIFF are correct).

when I bounce in the Wave or MP3 file is distorted or saturated. Why?(with bounce in AIFFare correct). Thank you

    1. Check your mix if it contains a limiter as the very last plugin in the stereo output channel. Everything above 0db will clip the sound. The limiter makes sure nothing goes beyond that treshold.
    2. Check bounce settings: A WAV/AIFF file should have 44.100 kHz samplerate and at least 16 bit. This is the standard for bouncing CD quality. Maybe you messed things up for WAV by reducing samplerate and/or bitdepth.
    3. As for mp3, check that the bitrate is set to at least 128kb/s or better to obtain an acceptable quality. Anything lower will introduce artifacts that scramble the sound.

  • Bouncing as a .wav

My options when I bounce are:
    pcm
    mp3
    aac
    burn cd
Is there a way to bounce as a wav file?

Yesss! PCM (Pulse Coded Modulation) IS the right choice.
In fact it's the base of all uncompressed formats.
After that you can choose if your PCM file must be .wav, .aiff or .sd2

  • ITunes "organized" my wav files.

I have approximately 2000 wav files on an external hard drive. All the songs were imported using iTunes. Because of hardware issues, the internal HD was reformatted and the OS reinstalled. When I "add(ed them) to library" without "keep iTunes Music folder organized" checked, the songs appeared in the iTunes browser without the artist or album listed. So I checked the "keep iTunes Music folder organized." Well of course iTunes placed all the wav files in a single folder. It appears all album information and artist information was lost. Does anyone have any idea about how I might reorganize the files? Thank You.
This is an obvious flaw in iTunes. Most likely easily correctable. I'm not sure why apple has not taken the time to fix this bug.
    PowerPook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Sorry - but seems to be a hard work to come.
What about the nameing of the wav files? Did you originally select "Create file names with track number"?
The problem in you case: while all track information are stored within mp3 + aac files as tags, those information will be store externally and linked to wav + aiff files: reformatting your hd erased that information.

  • QT .wav files playback fine on computer, but not on burned CD's

Never had this problem until I updated to Mac OS X.4.8 & QT 7.1.3
Although all .wav, aiff, mpeg files play just fine on computer. However third party hardware (e.g. disc player) no longer seem to recognize audio on CD's burned from computer.
Thought I had the answer when I read forum and went back to System Preferences and made sure the boxes for .wav, etc were checked under MIME
    settings. But still same problem.
Is the fix for this export problem the same as I read for movie audio in this forum? Namely download Mpeg Streamclip?
Apologize is this post is redundant, but have read dozens, and none seem to share exactly the same problem.
Specific solution would be much appreciated!

Ok Kirk, please help me out here. I downloaded the MPEG Streamclip. Followed directions, but any music files I tried to put in the blue dot box for conversion just bounced back.
I understand what you are saying about QT not being able to export audio. But what then was exporting audio to CD's in the .wav or .aiff format before I downloaded QT 7.1.3?
The thing I have always loved about Macs and music production is their user-friendliness; but these new wrinkles in CD production are really time-consuming when one cannot figure out how to make the applications work.
Sorry for the question again, but I did try many times with the info you gave me, but just having any luck.

  • Exporting project as audio file (wav)?

This may sound like a stupid question but i'm new to logic. I'm trying to export the project as an audio wav file to post on the net but am a little confused how its done. The project contains apple loops - can these be exported with the rest of the project?
    Thanks

    Look up "Bounce"...
This will create a stereo mix of your song, in any format you choose, be it .wav, AIFF, AAC,, mp3, etc...

  • Garageband seeing 16 bit wav files as 8 bit.

I am using Garage band 11.  I have a session with speech and music.  I came back to edit it and it would not open saying the audio was 8 bit. It was not it was wav and 44.1/16 bit.  I opened the package contents and checked the wav files and they played fine.  So how and why did Garageband suddenly see then as 8 bit?
    I lost my whole session.
    And ideas

i don't know the "why," but all is not lost yet.
create a new project and drop the audio file into the timeline of the new project. if it really is a 44.1k 16-bit aiff file, then it should import into the new project.

  • Export to MP3, AIFF, etc.

I know this may be a stupid question, but I'm just a newbie. Anyway my question is this: I just recorded a song (8 different tracks) and I just can't figure out how to get a mixdown and export a final product. I can get each individual track but that's not what I want! I'm sure it's really obvious but your help is much appreciated

What you need to do is:
Read the section in the manual about "BOUNCING"
At the bottom of your Stereo Outputs 1-2 you will find the little Bounce button - hit that or assign a Keycommand to it - a menue opens - determine the Locators / starting and end point of your project - choose a format like wav/aiff (PCM) or MP3 or whatever you want - choose Bit depth/Sample rate - select if you want to bounce in realtime or offline - bounce.

  • ITunes and AIFF/FLAC support, 24-bit music, HDTracks etc

Ok guys I know this has probably been asked before, but I have done my research and most topics are pretty old so I will proceed to ask this again so that I can get answers as of today (January 2014).
First question is, does iTunes support 24-bit music? If so, in which of these formats (ALAC, FLAC, WAV, AIFF) ?
Second question, does iTunes support hi-res sample rates? If so, in which formats and how high?
    Please answer in this format:
    ALAC up to xxx Khz
    FLAC up to xxx Khz
    WAV up to xxx Khz
    AIFF up to xxx Khz
Please answer only if you are 100% certain of what Im talking about here and you have tried it as you answer. This post refers to iTunes as of today, version 11.1.4 (latest release as of January 2014).
    Thanks!

I ran into the same problem with my FLAC files. It's hard to compromise quality, especially for albums by Hans Zimmer, John Murphy, and Two Steps from ****, but tis life. If you're not interested in downloading some third party program to convert like I wasn't, there is this nifty little site that converts music for you for free. No ads, no tricky layouts, just simple upload, convert, and download the file when it's done. They offer a pretty limited selection of conversion options, but better than not at all.
    Formats: mp3, wav, wma, ogg
    Quality (kbit/s): 96, 128, 192, 320

    Hope that helps!

  • Exchange mp3 for aiff (reconnect)

Hi I am working on a project right now in Logic Express 7, it's kind of a collage of mp3 song mixed together to create a new piece. My problem is that logic is getting really slow when I work in the arrange window if I move the cursor the rainbow is spinning for a while before I can hear anything. Usually with midi and aiff files I have no issues. I am suspecting the mp3 format not to be well supported in that version. I just did drag and drop of my mp3's just like someone suggested before. Right now I am trying to convert all the mp3's that I am using in this project to aiff. My question is how to replace the mp3 files by the aiff files without loosing my editing? I don't want to start from scratch again, how is that possible? (I would need something like reconnect media like in FCP)
    Thanks

Sure, Logic can do this, but:
MP3s can not be edited destructively and have to converted into wav/aiff/SDII first if you want to actually change the pitch/tempo of the file in the sample editor, There are many tools to line up tempo and speed like various pitch shifters, pitch and time mashine, beatmapping and others. Logic is a full DAW also capable of Remixing and DJing stuff.

  • [RESOLVED] MPD can't add files to db, says ignoring unrecognized file

Sorry to bother you guys with this, but I have searched a while on google and the forums and come up empty.
I'm trying to add some music to my database with mpd and ncmpcpp. I start mpd and it starts fine, and start ncmpcpp and it starts fine, and hit the 'u' key to update. Then I look at my library. It has all the folders that are in my music folder, but none of the .mp3 files are listed. So I started mpd with
    mpd --verbose --stdout --no-daemon
And hit the 'u' key in ncmpcpp again, and for every file in my music folder, mpd says such things as
update: ignoring unrecognized file Snow Patrol/Chocolate.mp3
I am running mpd as a user (not as root or as a daemon) and even then I checked all the permissions on all the relevant files and directories and they all seem to be good.
I searched a lot and didn't find this error. Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it?

  • Quicktime VS ITunes

I download alot of soundfiles...many are not songs but for music and sound design...I would like to doubleclick on a file and have Quicktime open it instead of ITUNES adding it to the ITUNES library...This way I can quickly go through files without having to deleat them in ITUNES playlist as well as off harddrive when I don't like sound....I can download AIF , AIFF, wave and SD2 files with quicktime as default player...but if the wave file is green instead of the usual QT Blue+white pix , then Itunes will do it's thing...any thoughts?
