Way to convert Appleworks 5 docs to Pages

I have hundreds and hundreds of word processing documents in Appleworks that can not be opened by Pages using OS 10.7.5. These documents go back many years.
What's the best way to convert them into Pages documents? My wife has a machine running OS 10.6.8, so I believe they would open on her computer in Appleworks and be saved as an Appleworks 6 document which could then be opened by Pages. Do I need to go through all my folders manually to find the Appleworks 5 and earlier documents, copy them to a flashdrive, open them on my wife's computer, create the Pages documents and then transfer them back to my machine? I'm hoping there is an easier way!
Thanks for any help or advice that people can provide.

Yvan Koenig has written many AppleScripts over the years & he recently added all of his AppleWorks scripts to his box.com account. All of his scripts have directions in English & French at the beginning of the script when you open the scripts in AppleScript Editor.
There are several iWork & Pages folders to take a look at. I don't see anything that might work in the iWork '09 folder, but there is another iWork folder further down on the page with more folds inside.

  • Opening AppleWorks Drawing docs in Pages

One of the frustrations some Pages users have expressed is not being able to open AppleWorks drawing docs. I've discovered a way to open AppleWorks drawings in Pages and keep the drawings editable. (The document has to be from a recent enough version of AppleWorks, 6.2.4 or 6.2.9.) It is basically just a matter of copying and pasting the drawing objects into an AW word processing document in the proper way, saving, then opening the doc in Pages.
To do this use the following procedure: Open the drawing document in AppleWorks, use "Select all" and then copy the selection. Now open a new Word Processor document in AppleWorks. If you don't have the tools palette visible, select Show Tools from the Window menu. Now click on the arrow pointer toward the top of the tool palette. (This deactivates the insert text cursor from the WP doc you just created. If you don't do this step your drawing objects will be pasted as a single uneditable graphic.)
Now do the Paste command and everything from your Drawing document is pasted into the WP doc, but still as a collection of individual drawing objects. Now save this document with whatever name you want. Then open the resulting document in Pages. It WILL open and all the drawing objects are still editable. I even found that you can still ungroup objects that were grouped in AW.
I doubt this is a perfect solution, but I was pleasantly surprised to see it work as well as it did in my limited testing.

Unfortunately, this is the only way to get those AppleWorks draw documents into Pages. I believe I described much the same process three years ago when Pages 1/iWork '05 was released. Back then, I don't think text boxes remained editable, but they do in Pages 2 & 3. Links between text boxes may be lost, but they are easily recreated in Pages.
I think that page layout mode in Pages 3 is very similar to AppleWorks draw & am surprised that this function doesn't exist. It's something I've left feedback for the Pages team about more than once.

  • Convert Microsoft Word docs to Pages?

I love Pages and want to convert a bunch of Microsoft Word docs into Pages documents. The action would open the .doc file in Pages, then save it as a Pages document with the same title.
Is there anything that would let me do this? Thanks.

I've tried that myself, to no avail.
Here's what I've tried - if anyone can twiddle with this to make it actually work, I too would be grateful!
    1 find finder items
    2 get specified finder items
3 copy finder items (to save originals)
    4 launch app (pages)
but then there's no action for creating a new file or saving-as or anything...
    thanks and peace-

  • I have a extensive recipe database in Appleworks 6. Is there a way to convert this to Numbers or Pages?

New Macbook Pro running Mavericks; Pages; Numbers but no more Appleworks supported.
I have a collection of family recipes done in Appleworks 6 [database]--600 recipes+
I can sort on many different fields and easily search the data.
I am inserting a snapshot of one recipes for an example of the format that I set; loved the button functions!
I have it set to print to 4x6 cards.
Is there anyway to convert this to Pages or Numbers applications?
I can save my existing document as a pdf and can have access to them but i would love to be able to continue adding and editing the data--
    ANYONE have a solution??

Peggy has very astutely laid out your options and I hate to see you abandon your Family Recipie database after so much time and effort.
It is doubtful that Apple will ever address the issue of Appleworks databases in a more direct way.  They have Filemaker and you can export your data from Appleworks and create a new database in Filemaker and import all of your data without any loss of data.  This is of course much work, but only a "one-time" amount of work and then your database continue forward in Filemaker.
You also acknowledge the continuing option of using older Mac hardware.  While of course this option is easy and available to you now, what happens when your older Mac hardware dies and you are faced with a hardware purchase decision?  Continue to try to find a suitable older Mac on the used market and wait for it to fail again.  Or purchase a new Mac?
If you purchase a new Mac, and do not want to pursue the EXPORT -> IMPORT into a new database program, then the other option suggested by Peggy, installing Snow Leopard Server into Parallels for continued use of Appleworks 6 in Mavericks, is a good one and not too costly; about $99 or less.
In any event I highly recommend that you call Apple immediately and order a copy of Snow Leopard Server for $20 and at a minimum put it up on the shelf for later need, if any.  Once Apple raises the price again, or discontinues it sale, it will become again very expensive on the third party market such as eBay and Amazon.
Once you receive it, you can download a 14 day free trial version of Parallels and try it out for yourself, if you like.

  • Best way to convert InDesign stories to text doc?

Is there a fast, easy way to convert multiple stories in ID to one RTF or Word document?
I do quarterly publications that are composed of dozens (sometimes hundreds) of individual text frames, tables and graphics. The text comes from numerous sources. Before each new issue, the contributors need their pages from the previous issue in an editable format (MS Word) which they revise and send back to me.
I've been spending hours copying and pasting each story into a Word Doc for each contributor. This has given me the most accurate results, but it's incredibly tedious and time consuming. And the tables always need to be cleaned up and reformatted in Word.
I've also tried using the script to export all stories, but then I wind up with a bazillion small files. (Is there a way to combine them into one file?)
I've also tried saving the PDF as a Word doc or RTF file, but there is too much editing required to make it presentable.
Any suggestions or tips are greatly appreciated!!

Also want to convert all Apple works docs to pages docs on my IMac. Is there and app available to do the former. many thanks. b

The iPad and related software is designed to sync with only one computer. I suggest transferring the photos from one of your iMacs to the other so that all photos are on one Mac. Same for all other files you want to sync over.
To get those AppleWorks files to the iPad you'll have to determine if Pages will open them. If it will then use the file sharing feature of iTunes to copy them to Pages on your pad.
If Pages will not open the AppleWorks files directly you'll have to save them in some format that Pages will read. These include but may not be limited to Pages and Word formats.

  • Fonts that work in AppleWorks but not in Pages?  Possible to convert them?

I don't know enough about fonts to know why this would be the case; I have some fonts which are presently working in AppleWorks, but which are not listed in Font Book and do not show up in Pages.
Is there some way to convert the fonts so they will work? Some examples are all the free dingbat fonts at http://www.subgenius.com/SUBFONTS/subfont.html

I tried the Windows version, but that didn't work.
But, thanks! Font XChange was able to convert them, and they work in Pages now, although due to that being commercial software, the demo version altered them somehow. However in this case at least, since they're dingbats, that doesn't manifestly show.
For the small amount of font converting I might do, and the limited use I'd probably have for those fonts, I'm not sure about paying $100 for software that does that, even though it does appear to do its job really well. I wonder if there is cheaper, shareware, or freeware software that does the same?
What is it about these Fonts that necessitated the conversion?

    Hi ,
There is an option of embedding index for faster search while converting email to a PDF .
However I am not sure that will serve your purpose or not .
I would recommend you to get in touch with Microsoft support as well .
Meanwhile I'll work on it and get back to you in case I get a desired solution .

  • I cannot access AppleWorks 6, is there a way to convert them?

I just installed Mavericks and since I cannot access AppleWorks 6, is there a way to convert them?
I know AppleWorks 6 is old, but I have some documents that I need.
My windows laptop asks what I want to convert files into and I'm hoping there is something I can do?
    Please help

    1.  Read Roger Wilmut's excellent series of articles, Abandoning Appleworks:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/aw/page1.html
    2.  If you need to run Appleworks 6 to export some data (for example a database, which cannot be opened by any other program):
    a)  (Assuming your Mac will still boot into Snow Leopard, since you said you recently "upgraded to Mavericks"), Partition your hard drive (or add an external hard drive) and install Snow Leopard (and the optional Rosetta) into it and use the "dual-boot" method to boot into Snow Leopard and run Appleworks 6; or
    b)  Install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels and run Appleworks 6 concurrently with Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks:

  • I have two pdf docs that I used Acrobat to convert to word docs.  How do I extract one page from one doc to insert into the other doc?

I have two pdf docs that I converted to Word Docs using Acrobat Pro.  How do I extract one page from the first doc and insert it into the second doc?  When I "select all" it grabs the entire document.  I need to take pages out, put other pages in, and edit some of the text.

    HI djlarp,
Try triple-clicking in the text that you want to select--it can sometimes be tricky to select text in a converted document. If that doesn't work, it could be that the PDF document was created from a scanned document, and OCR wasn't enabled when you converted the document. (However, OCR is enabled by default when you convert via the ExportPDF website.)
If you're unable to select text by triple-clicking, let us know. I would be happy to take a closer look at your files.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Is there a program out there to convert appleworks data to pages data

Is there a program that will convert appleworks date to pages data?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly only in Pages (AppleWorks 6 only).
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings).
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
To use other programs, or open Painting or Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first.
If you can no longer run AppleWorks you cannot open these document types.

hello, is there a way to redact a word or item from a pdf using adobe pro X the same way you can if you convert a word doc using pro X on a pc?

If the document is not a scanned image or protected from editing then you should be able to edit it. I would have to guess you have a scan and when you converted to Word, you ran OCR (Optical Character Recognition) on it converting the scanned image to live text.
This is the forum for the free Adobe Reader which can not edit or redact.
