Way to merge original TM Disk to changed disk?

Changing Time Machine Disk
I just changed my time machine disk from an external drive attached locally, to a larger external drive attached to another computer.
The Local disk has a folder structure for TM backups and the networked shared drive has a sparse dmg image housing the backup folder structure. When I have both Drives available, I can go back in time to when the first disk started backing up. However, when I eject the original disk, I can only go back in time to when the backups started on the second disk.
I do not want to loose the safety of TM's backups by retiring the original disk. Is there any way to merge the backups from the original disk to the new disk without loosing history?

What if you move the Backup folder to the new disk before you start using it in Time Machine? Actually I suppose you could do it even after since the folders are all named by date. Should get you in the same place? Or is there an index that won't be updated?
Give it a try if you don't mind. Copy the old backups to the other location, eject the old disk and see what you get in TM.

  • Is there a way to merge Mail account A on my desktop with Mail account A on a separate hard disk? I lost all my old messages in July, but they are on the hard disk. Thanks!

Is there a way to merge Mail account A on my desktop with Mail account A from separate hard disks? I lost all my old messages (thousands of them) in July, but most of them are safe elsewhere. I'd really like to put them all in one place, though!
The desktop (iMac) now has messages from July 2012 onward.
My separate hard disk backup has old messages up to June 2012.
Most of the ones between June and July are on a MacBook Pro which I bought about that time.
Is there a relatively easy and safe way to put these messages back together in Mail account A on my desktop again?
    Many thanks!

Well, your profile info says 10.4.11, and you are posting your question in the iMac (PPC) category.  If you are running Snow Leopard, it must be a fairly recent Intel iMac.
In that case, you should definitely post your question here
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard
where other Snow Leopard users can see your question.  Restate the problem, what error messages you get, and what you have tried already (for trouble-shooting).

  • HT1918 Is there a way to merge multiple itunes accounts? My original itunes account (for my 1st gen ipod touch) has all of my purchases but it is not compatible with the icloud account.

I had an ipod before the icloud was introduced.  All of my apps and music were purchased using this account.  In order to use icloud services, a me.com had to be created.  My purchases and apps are in the original account and my email, contacts, calendar and notes are in the new account.  Is there a way to merge them?

    You cannot merge accounts.

  • A way to merge edits in virtual copies back the the original dng

I have a large set of images from a recent job (all with varying edits). My client if there was a way to take the final set of images an apply a variety of different lightroom edits to compare against the original set. I made selected my full set of original dng files and created several virtual copy sets and placed them in separate collections. After making a variety of tests the customer has decided on one of the virtual copy sets. Is there a way to merge the edits in the virtual copy set back to the original dng files? Is there a way to make a virtual copy set into its own set of dng files.
    Jim

Is there a way to make a virtual copy set into its own set of dng files.
A very quick way is to either export originals (or as dng, which does the same thing in this case) on the virtual copy set, which will give you a folder on your harddisk with "edited" dngs (I quote this because there is no such thing as edited dngs. The RAW data is untouched, there is just a develop recipe along with a jpeg preview saved into the file). Another way is to export the collection of virtual copies to a new catalog. You can include the originals if you want, or you can simply leave them in place if you don't want to double the needed storage space. You'll get a new catalog with just the virtual copies in it, but they will be masters at that point. Then you write metadata to file from this newly exported catalog.

  • Merge original picture with modified picture in Aperture

    Hi everybody!
I'm a new user of Aperture and like it so far. Actually I think that the application is brilliant and it has helped me a lot to improve and enhance my pictures. I have a couple of questions though that I hope that you could answer.
Since I've imported a couple of albums from iPhoto I have recognize that Aperture stores two pictures, the original version and a modified version. That's fantastic, but when I'm done with my enhancements I don't need the original photo and is there any possible way to merge the photos or to remove all original files from the albums? I  also wonder how much extra space all my pictures will take if I import my whole iPhoto-library, will it literally doubles?

    Thank you very much!

Thank you very much Kirby for your detailed reply! I really appreciate it, and thank you as well for your advice and your sympathetic for my beginner expriences. (1)
So to clarifie, you meen that all the edited photos that I create are stored as strings rather than actual images when I work in Aperture, and that they are usable/sharable pictures by the time that i Export them? So to get a "real" enhanced image in Aperture I need no export them and then import them again? (2)
I have also read your post, very good explanation. You have written that:
"Any image can be in any album, and can be in as many albums as you want."
I presume that it means that the library file, or my image database store this information so that I don't duplicate my pictures inside Aperture and store a lot of unnecessary memory on my hard drive? Cause you also say that Aperture never removes the original, which in that case are absolutely brilliant. (3)
As a last question, can I change the view inside Aperture so that it only shows the originals or the edited photos, or both? Obviously I show both right now but If I want to alternate it? (4)
    Thank you for everything!
    1.  You're welcome.  Pass it forward  .
    2. Yes and no.  It's simple, but odd.  Aperture is a program for storing, developing, publishing digital camera negatives.  (In this sense, the "negative" is the data file created by your camera from the light it recorded when you exposed the sensor by opening and closing the shutter.)  Your negative is never altered (this, alone, is fabulous: it means you can redevelop it at any time should the need arise).  Your "edits" -- in Aperture, these are called, for good reason, "adjustments" -- are saved literally in a text file (afaik).  The only reason to export an Image is when you need a shareable image-format file.  "Export" means "make me an image-format file to these specifications".  I'm not sure what you mean by "a real enhanced image".  If you export an adjusted Image, and then import the file you just created, you are making a new Master in Aperture -- with all of the adjustments "baked in".  If you then discard the digital negative (the Master of the Image your exported), you lose the original and cannot re-convert or re-develop an Image from the negative.  There might be unusual circumstances where this would be beneficial, but I can't think of one.
    3. Precisely.  In practical terms, there is no performance or storage price to be paid for creating Albums or Versions.  Create as many as you care to.  You get to create a Library structure that meets your needs, not your computer's needs or limitations.
    4. Behind (so to speak) every Image in Aperture is its Master.  You can toggle the Viewer from Version to Master by pressing "m".  (There is also an icon on the Toolstrip that does this.)  It sounds as though you are creating new Versions when you make Adjustments.  This is normal for beginners -- if you're like I was, you are vaguely scared that if you can't see it, the Master will get lost.  It won't.  I gradually stopped trying to keep track of my Masters -- they are always there -- and now I just make all my adjustments to the first Version created, and then create additional Versions, unless I plan on publishing the un-adjusted Master.
Aperture rewards experimentation.  Create a practice Library -- a hundred files imported, three or four Projects -- and try stuff.  Break it.  Delete it.  Create another one.  Ask more.

  • Is there any way to merge 2 video layers to one without exporting?

Is there any way to merge 2 video layers into one without exporting as a new QuickTime movie? I have tried opening a blank player to copy and paste into, but it always forces it to be layered, even when I change the layer numbers both to zero. I tried extracting the video layers and omitting the audio tracks. Then I saved it as a new self contained movie. I am trying to burn the video to dvd with Roxio Easy Media Creator 9's MyDVD on WIndows XP, but I am also using a MacBook with QuickTime Pro. MyDVD will only recognize one video and audio layer at a time, hence, the other layers get skipped. There should be an easy way to merge two video layers without having to export it as a new movie, which takes 2 hours for this 2 hour TV show. Thanks for any answers.

    Just closing this topic.

  • Is it possible to upgrade on a new HD without original installation disk?

My situation is a little complicated.
I've had my MacBook Pro for almost three years. For the past few months, I've been having some problems with a very loud droning, buzzing sound coming from the lower-right quadrant. I can only use my computer for a few hours to watch or edit videos before it starts making this noise and I have to shut it down. I posted about this a couple times before and the only response I got was that my hard drive probably needs to be replaced. So since I, nor anyone else, seems to know what the problem is, I'm probably just going to do that. This is where it gets complicated.
My original installation disk for Tiger is, presumably, at my parents' house 1500 miles away, if it still exists at all. I want to upgrade to Leopard anyways (so I can play Sims 3), but I think that it's pretty much impossible without the original disk for Tiger. I figured I would need to use my Tiger disk to set up the new hard drive, and then upgrade to Leopard straight away. Is there any possible way to install Leopard on a new hard drive without having to buy the full system (not just the upgrade)? I was thinking I could call Apple and beg and plead for a replacement Tiger disk, but I would probably just be wasting my time.
I'm starting to think that my situation here really is hopeless and my computer will never be able to be useful to me again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the speedy reply. That looks like just what I was looking for. I'm going to go buy that right now and I hope this is the end of my searching for a solution. Thanks so much.
I have one question though (it may be stupid, but I'm not very literate on Macs): will the program back up my whole operating system or just my files? Like, will I be able to install the OS from the backup?

  • Is there a way to merge 3 or more report output in PDF into one

    Hi All,
I know about the report sectioning. I am wondering is there any other way to merge 3 or more report output in pdf form to a single document.
I have seen that there are many thrid party tools. Wondering is there anything from Oracle reports feature or any Oracle product for this?

If not changing the reports design, third party tools is the only options. AFAIK, there is no Oracle proprietary tool for merging PDF files..

  • Need a way to merge two mail accounts

I have a small problem that I hope someone can help me fix. I have cross posted this in the OD services forum as that is the service that I have the 'user' problem with.
Some time back I made a mistake and deleted a user using WM. This user had mail services. I had a backup of the mail folders using the mailbfr tool set. Lucky for me this backup ran just before i deleted the user.
Now this is what I did next.
I added the user again with WM withing a few mins - however I did not spell the name correctly and so I ended up with a shortname that is not correct. I added a second sort name ([email protected]) and so the mail now works in that the user can log onto imap using the previous 'second' short name and e-mail is correctly processed. As you would expect the users email mailboxs are empty as the are seen as a new users by the mailserver (due to my spelling the name wrong).
So I have two mail boxes for this user - one old with correct spelling, one new with incorrect spelling. From the outside world it all looks OK... but the user cannot access the old e-mails and over time one will get into trouble with this user haveing the wrong name.
I would like to find a way of correcting the users 'primary' shortname and combining the old and new emails together into the correct email account.
Help - how do I do this? It seems I need to fix two things - change the shortname internally in the server somehow and combine the e-mails into one account.
I could very easly delete the wrong account and create a new one with the correct spelling. But I would need to preserver the new emails that have come in since and move them into the old email account (which I assume will work Ok with the new user).
Hope all is clear. look forward to some help.

You can block port 25 at firewall/router as an easy way to prevent bounces from outside world during this process....
Delete the 2nd short name on first account. Create a new account with the correct short name, enable mail.
Use an imap client to connect to both account and copy/drag all mail from the old wrong account to the new account.
That's a nice clean way to merge mail accounts.
Now of course, the user will have a new UID... and that might cause permission headaches......
So it might be better to use an imap account to connect to the old account first, copy all mail into a local mailbox. Delete the old account. Then create a new account and set the same UID and correct short name. You could then connect to it with an imap client and drag mail back to the inbox.

  • HT204053 Is there a way of merging two AppleIDs?

Obviously a beginners mistake, but I have created a second AppleID instead of changing the email address of the first one. And now I have purchases in itunes from both accounts. Is there a way to merge the two accounts?
Thanks in advance for any tips.
    Cheers,

It's not currently possible to merge accounts, nor to transfer content from one account to another account. If any of the downloads on the second account were free then you could delete them and download them via the first account, otherwise content is tied to the account that downloaded it

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Original video file date changes when imported

When I import video files, the date of the original source file gets changed to the date of my importing it.
Premiere Pro CS4 never did that. Why is CS5.5 changing the date of the source file ??
    steve

    Hi Todd, --
I think you are saying my 'write xmp id to files on import' must be turned ON somehow. I did not do that, so if it is turned ON, it must be ON by default ?
It was both 'date created' AND 'date modified' that were being changed to the date of import.
Ok, I found that. It is turned ON by default, I turned it OFF. I also turned OFF the next one too - 'enable clip and xmp metadata linking'.
I just did a test import, and the 'date modified' of the video files on the hard drive has not changed. Thank you.  VERY MUCH.
But, I have other problems too, with PP, and video file dates.
There's a 'date created' and a 'date modified' for video files. Plus, with Windows 7, there's a few more dates - 'date of content' etc.
My original untouched video file dates do not make any sense. 'Date Modified' is showing the date the video files were recorded. 'Date Created' is showing the date I copied the video files from the camera stick to the hard drive.
That makes no sense. They should be the reverse.
Why why why after 30 some odd years have the computer engineers NEVER made video files dates the same as digital photo files, with 'Date Taken'.
    Also,
I have multiple cameras. For each event or trip or whatever I often take several 1,000 photos and videos. It's an absolute necessity to be able to mass import chronologically. The only way I can integrate / import them all in chronological order is by Date originally Taken, and then immediately drag all the files to the timeline while they are still all collectively highlighted in the order I just imported them all by date.
PP only allows for imports by 'date taken' for photos and 'date modified' for video files. And, if I don't immediately drag the imported files to the timeline while they are all still highlighted without doing anything else first, the bin window re-arranges them all by filename, and there is no way to later re-arrange them by dates.
This is extremely aggravating and impossible to work with for my need to import then later work with multiple-source recorded files chronologically.
All these 'date' problems for video files really totally screws that.

  • Any way to merge 2 mail stores?

Server running 10.4.9 crashed, and backups were fudged. We were finally able to get services back up and running, but could not get mail restored. Now we have the original mail folders, but someone turned on the mail service before we had moved over the data. So, now we have new data in place along with the backed up messages. Is there any way to merge the data to keep the old messages as well as the new? If any other information is needed, let me know...

    1. To avoid overwriting anything, create a new folder for the user on the working mail server (through an IMAP client).
    2. Next copy the messages/folders from the backup into this new folder.
    3. When done, reconstruct the user by issuing "mailbfr -m username".
    4. Repeat for each user.
    HTH,
    Alex
P.S. mailbfr is available here http://osx.topicdesk.com/tools/

  • Will there be a way to merge iCloud accounts for family sharing in iOS 8?

My family of four has 5 Apple IDs. Each of us has a personal one that we use for mail, contacts, and calendars and we all share an Apple ID for use with the iTunes and App Stores. This way, we can all currently share content without having to buy it four times. However, Apple has solved this problem in iOS 8 with family sharing.
My question is how should I handle this with my current lineup of Apple IDs. I know there's currently no way to merge two Apple IDs into one, and I don't want to just transfer my credit card to my personal Apple ID, as I will lose my purchase history. I know I could add my current "shared" ID to our family account in iOS 8, but I'd like not to have a duplicate of myself. Any advice would be appreciated!

It's not necessary to merge the iCloud and iTunes Store accounts. The Family Organizer should use their own iCloud account when setting up Family Sharing. You'll also be asked to supply the iTunes Store account you want to use to share music, movies, apps, etc., with your family during the setup process. It appears Apple has already addressed this common problem.

  • Best way to merge multiple iPhoto libraries from several external hard drives into one, while deleting duplicates?

Problem: My wife and I both have MacBook Pros (MBPs).  We take a lot of pictures and import them into iPhoto.  When the storage capacity of our MBPs gets full, I have been moving our iPhoto libraries into external hard drives, which are now multiple (3 or 4).  The problem I now realize we have been making, is that once the iPhoto libraries were copied onto the external hard drives, we were only deleting about half of the photos in each iPhoto library remaining in our MBPs (because we wanted to keep some of the important ones in our hard drives).  Once the storage capacities of our MBPs got full again, I would repeat the whole process again and again.  In essence I now have several large iPhoto libraries (each about 80 GB), each with multiple duplicate photos, divided among several external hard drives.  And I am running out of space on my hard drive again.  So what is the best way to:
    a)  merge all of these iPhoto libraries into just one, while simultaneously being able to delete all the duplicates?  (or would you not recommend this?)
    b)  prevent this from happening again?
Thanks.  BTW I am using OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and iPhoto 8.1.2 (2009)

If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($30) version of iPhoto Library Manager
The Library Manager app can be set avoid duplicates.
