Way to mount FireWire external HDs so I can access remotely?

This is either not possible, or I am totally looking in the wrong place. I have three FireWire external HDs that are chained, then plugged into an iMac G4 running 10.4.11, then mounted to the desktop. File sharing is on, along with Remote Access, Remote Login, etc. in the Control Panel.
I am trying to login remotely (through ftp, afp) using a MacBook Pro running 10.5 to view/copy files from the HDs, but all I am able to login to is the Home Folder of the username/password I put in - the HDs don't show up. I've tried various things, such as Virtual Folders, trying to input the path to the HDs in the address string - all to no avail.
Is there a way to mount FireWire drives so that a remote user can access them?

If you're external HDs are mounted as a local volume, that should up under Devices in the Finder window. Does it? If so, then in Preferences->Sharing->File Sharing, you should be able to add that volume as a Shared Folder. Is that what is giving you trouble? (I don't have an external HD, so can't test it).
Once you've shared that out, you should be able to connect to it via afp://, nfs://, or smb://...

  • Suggestions needed on Firewire External HDs Needed...

Im wanting to buy an external hard drive for my comp. I purchased a Western Digital USB hard drive in February, but am very dissapointed at how extremely slow it is copying to/from it, and running videos off of it is impossible.
So Ive heard Firewire HDs are considerably faster, and am looking to buy one. I was wondering what I should look for when browsing for one. My USB HD says its 7200 RPMs, and all the Firewire HDs Ive found are also 7200 RPMs-does that mean they will be as slow as the USB one?
Thanks for any help or insight anyone can provide
    Mike

The reason your EX HD is slow is because your machine is not equipped with USB 2.0, it is equipped with USB 1.1, the earlier version of USB. For a time, this was an adequate way to transfer data when people didn't know any better. The advent of firewire on the Macintosh platform made data transfer so much faster. With USB 2.0 the transfer rate is slightly faster. In comparison it is 480 mbps to 400 mbps.
You could sell your USB EX HD and use that money to subsidize the purchase of an EX firewire drive. And yes, you will notice a considerable difference in transfer. I cannot speak for trying to run videos off of it, I've read that this is not the intended function for it, but I could be wrong.
USB 2.0 shipped originally with this model, http://www.apple.com/emac/specs.html
This is the one you and I own,
    http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Manuals/specs/emac/L27504AEN.pdf
I recently purchased a slim little EX HD firewire type called Acomdata Ondago. It runs at 5200 RPM's I don't really know how that could decrease it's performance. I also bought an EX firewire enclosure and inserted a standard ATA 300 gig HD running at 7200 RPM's for the total cost of $150.00.
Hope this helps and sorry for the confusion,

  • When mounting an external hard drive, I cannot access the folders - permissions?

I'm trying to mount the volume of an external hard drive on my desktop. I see the drive but the contents are not available to me. The drive works fine on another Mac -- how do I resolve this? thanks in advance!

If you right click on the drive in the Finder, what is the Format of the drive?
Further down under Sharing & Permissions what does it say the Privilege is for (Me)?

  • How do I stop my child from erasing the "history" on mozilla? Is there a way to password protect it so only I can access it?

My teenager erased the history each time he goes on so that I don't see where he was (so he doesn't get in trouble for going to youtube when he should be doing homework). I'd like to be able to password protect the history so he can no longer erase it. Can you please advise me.

One option is to use the Public Fox add-on to password protect parts of Firefox including the option to clear recent history - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/public-fox/
The downside of using an add-on is that it is quite easy to bypass. An alternative approach is to use a third party parental control application that stores its own log of sites that are visited. If the Firefox list is cleared, the sites will still be shown in the other application. One such application is the free K9 web protection - http://www.k9webprotection.com/

  • Proper way of mounting external hard drive - fstab rules?

I have an external hard drive with all my music on it, and I want MPD to play this music. Now I was wondering how best to mount my external, such that MPD can actually access the music.
I was told to create an fstab entry with the UUID of my external to have it being mounted to a fixed spot. But this only works during boot up, correct?
What should I do, if I plug in the external after boot up? Is there a way to have it automounted to the same fixed spot as defined in fstab (maybe even using fstab)?

As iBertus mentioned, you can use the automount features of different desktops. XFCE includes the Thunar file manager which can also be used in other lightweight desktops.
If on the command line, pmount will let you mount the drive as a normal user, and without any fstab entries. This command will mount USB device sdb1  to /media/Stalafin.
    pmount /dev/sdb1 Stalafin]
The cool thing about pmount is that if the drive/partition is encrypted with LUKS, you can throw other options at it and it will decrypt and mount at the same time.

  • FireWire external drives and bootable DVD's

I have 2 Mac Pro running 10.5.2 with all recent updates:
    1) Mac Pro *****UXYL model MacPro3,1 (early 2008)
    2) Mac Pro *****00PX model MacPro1,1 ROM de démarrage : MP11.005D.B00
On the second I can mount and boot with a FireWire external drive. I can also use an utility DVD or CD like DiskWarrior.
On the first one, nothing of this is possible : I cannot mount a FireWire drive only an USB drive. I cannot use CD or DVD bootables except of course Install Disks (version 1.1)
I tried to obtain an answer from Apple support without any success.
    <post edited by host>

The ROM has been reported in the past to be one element of the issue, but in general Apple has made it abundently clear that you can't install an older operating system on a Mac nor boot from an older operating system than the Mac than came with it in these two articles:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
And as far as I know no one has been able to downgrade the ROM to an older version than it shipped with either to force boot an older operating system.

  • Remove Internal HD and mount as external? Possible?

Hey folks- thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I am retiring a G4 that is no longer starting up and has a busted optical drive. I'll be working primarily on my new MacBook.
I would like to remove the internal hard drive from the G4 and mount it in an external case so I can access the files. Is this possible? If so, any guidance or suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Chris

Get an external housing. Firewire would be best, however, since you have USB 2.0, USB would also work (but a bit slower).

  • How do I mount an external Firewire HD when booting into single user mode?

    Hi,
How can I mount an external Firewire Harddisk from the Darwin Console, once I have booted into single user mode?
I'm trying to make a backup of all my files and then re-install my iMac G5 since it doesn't start the GUI anymore and I haven't gotten any responses to my question here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1104762&tstart=0
    Thanks,
    Torsten

ok, I executed the following commands:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /usr/libexec/registermach_bootstrapservers /etc/mach_init.d
    autodiskmount
    There were two messages:
    UniNEnet: Ethernet address 00:14:51:32:19:b8
    and
Aug 29 20:55:29 launchd: server 2e3b in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[16]: exited abnormally: Hangup
I don't know whether this has anything to do with the commands I entered.
And since I don't know what the volume name for the external Firewire HD is, I typed
    ls -l /Volumes
but the only volume that is being listed there is my iMac's internal HD.
    What should I do next?
    Thx!

  • External HDs not mounting

My OP is Lion 10.7.5. I have two external HDs: one LACIE 1T which I use for Time Machine and a IOMEGA 500M which I use for my photos. Both of them stopped mounting when I upgraded to Lion. I can see them both in Disk Utility but  grayed out. They both Verify fine in Disk Utility. When I tried to mount them with disk utility it does not work. I have tried everything that I could find here including Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC. I also tried the terminal hack with sudo and still no solution. I can't believe both drives have been damaged at the same time. Any other potential solution?

  • I have a external back-up that my iMac (10.6.8) won't mount. Is there a way to mount without intializing and losing back-up data?

I have a external back-up that my iMac (10.6.8) won't mount. Is there a way to mount without intializing and losing back-up data? I used time machine to back-up to a Seagate Go-flex hard drive. I get a message from my iMac that says it doesn't recognize this drive and wants to initialize. Hope someone can help.

Try connecting the drive to a Windows machine, then ejecting.  If it won't eject properly, restart the Windows machine, and try again.  Then try connecting it to the Mac.

  • External HDs not showing up on computer via firewire and usb

All external hds do not show up on the computer via firewire or usb. I must have perfomed some updates with my hardware plugged in. Does anybody know how to get this fixed?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.3.9 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

Is the enclosure locked? External drives won't mount if the enclosure is locked, typically.

  • Firewire external hard drives no longer mount

I had 2 firewire external hard drives connected, not always at the same time and not running all the time. Suddenly they won't mount. I have run System Profiler and it shows "No information Found". The drives themselves mount on my other Mac laptop.
An external DVD writer, when mounted, shows up in profiler though not on the desktop. I have set the finder preferences to -show all mounted drives. System profiler lists all my USB devices. It's just the 2 Firewire hard drives that show no information found. The DVD writer works in either Firewire port. The hard drives are each made by a different manufacturer.
I have re-started with everything off. I have hot swapped.
Help-I need these drives to store photo files and print publications.

    fairview:
The next step is to see if it is directory related and Repair Disk:
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    Good luck.

  • My MacBook Pro won't let me mount my external Hard Drive. Just trying to restore my iTunes library.

My MacBook Pro, less than a year old, started acting weird. I backed everything up, took it in to Best Buy, who sent it out to Apple Repair and they put in a new motherboard.
It's running on Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
Now I am trying to put everything back on the computer from my external Maxtor 80GB Hard Drive. MacBook Pro won't recognize the external drive.
I tried Disk Utility. I can see the external drive, and did a repair disk and verify disk. Several times. Each time it says "This partition map seems to be ok."
However, I am not able to mount it, as that option is greyed out and i can't select it.
Also, under the Icon for the external hard drive, it has the Macintosh HD Icon (essentially my computer). I tried to restore this way, didn't work.
I need this to mount, as it has all of my itunes stuff on it; dozens of my sons movies, and my entire iTunes library.
PLEASE HEEEEELP!! HOW CAN I MOUNT THIS EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE? Thank you in advance

Try things in this USB/Firewire faq.
