Way to mute sound prior to startup

weird question: is there a way to ensure the sound on the MacBook is muted prior to startup? I find myself frequently in settings when I must startup my machine in a quiet meeting room. Inevitably, I've forgotten to mute the sound before my last shutdown, and, if possible, I'd like to keep from drawing attention to myself when I have to startup during a meeting.
Is there functionality that allows a manual mute prior to startup?

  • Quick way to mute sound

    Hi,
I have my iMac hooked up to an external audio interface via Firewire. Most of the time while I'm working, I listen to an internet radio station, which I have open in a separate browser window hidden behind the main browser window. If I need to quickly mute the sound – for instance, when I get a phone call – this is not always easy: I have to switch to the browser, then switch to the relevant browser window, then click on the "stop" or "mute" buttons on the internet radio player. I used to use a third party radio player app (Snowtape) with a customisable keyboard shortcut to mute and unmute the sound, but I had to stop using it; for some reason, it would no longer play nice with my favourite radio station once I upgraded to Lion.
So, my question: is there any way of setting up a system-wide keyboard shortcut that will toggle sound on and off?
    Thanks,
    Rob

  • How to mute sound for app?

Is there a way to mute sound for one particular app? In windows, you can do this from the volume control. It list each app and you can control volume there. I don't see a way to do this in Windows.
Particularly in gotomeeting, there isn't any mute available. Safari is the same way.

and use the Mute button. You can get by with the free version for just muting.

  • Any way to mute start up sound

Is there any way to mute the star up sound?
    Thanks

You can select the Mute box in System Preferences > Sound but be aware, that "chord" you hear when you start your Mac means the Mac has passed it's diagnotists tests.
If you mute sound so you can't hear that when you startup your Mac, you won't know when the disk may need repairing until it's too late. Much better off living with the startup sound.

  • Mac Air running Lion How to mute or turn down startup sound

I go to library alot and need to mute or turn down startup sound.
    Any help?

Turn the volume down before you shut down the MBair, the startup tone should be the same volume as when you shut down.

  • How to quickly mute sound?

Since the iPad doesn't have a button to shut off sound, what is the quickest way to mute it?

No, it's hardwired. It was a good decision, though, I feel because locking the screen orientation easily is mighty useful in the iPad. Wish the iPhone could do it. The compensation for the dedicated mute switch works almost as well, I think. After less than a second of holding down the volume toggle in the lower volume direction, the thing mutes. Almost the same as clicking the iPhone's mute button, no? I also find the iPad's volume toggle switch is easier to use than the iPhone's.

  • How to mute sound of screen capture

I use screen capture on my Nokia X by press Power + Volume down button , I need to disable sound of screen capture
Please advise How to mute sound of screen capture.

No, there is no existing way in your phone to disable sound of screen capture. Even turning on silent mode, does not make sound off.

  • Lock button doesn't mute sound

Lock button Works great for lock rotation but not for mute sound.

Is there any software that can make the switch silence all sounds as a safety percation?  I had my volume all the way down I thought and then all of a sudden sound came on full volume from an app.  I have been waiting for this to happen to me and finally it did.
It's interesting how different apps tie into the sound, some play music which I guess is registered to system sound and the lock switch will stop it from playing but several (most it seems) that play sounds or iTunes of course doesn't stop the sound which makes me a bit paridoid to have the thing in meetings.  Hardware switches are so much better than software visuals for things like this in IMO.

  • Using iPad 2 - if i use the slide switch to lock rotation, i cannot unlock rotation, unless i use it to mute sounds.  i can't therefore have unmuted sounds and unlocked rotation at the same time??

using iPad 2 - if i use the slide switch to lock rotation, i cannot unlock rotation, unless i use it to mute sounds.  i can't therefore have unmuted sounds and unlocked rotation at the same time??

Uh .... Yes you can. You just have to understand how the whole thing works.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • The iCloud Drive folder in Library/Mobile Documents is taking up way too much space on my startup disk.

The iCloud Drive folder in Library/Mobile Documents is taking up way too much space on my startup disk
I was hoping my files would stay in the cloud and not take up a ton of space on my machine (only a 128gb SSD).  But while performing an overnight time machine backup I came back to find a "Startup Disk Full" error message.  I only have about 20gb used locally but over 200gb in iCloud Drive at the moment.
Is there a way to clear the cache so my files stay on iCloud and not hogging space on my SSD? Or a way to redirect this library to my 2nd hard drive?
I'm using a 15" mid-2012 Macbook Pro with a 1TB hard drive and I've replaced the optical drive with a 128gb SSD for my OS (which is where my library is, hence the difficulty).
    Thank you!

While puttering around after posting this I think I found my personal solution here: http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/qt/Move-Your-Home-Folder-To-A-New-Loc ation.htm
I'm just going to move my home folder to my 2nd internal 1TB hard drive to solve my problem.
But my question remains, how can we minimize the amount of local space iCloud Drive ***** up?  I wanted to get the rumored new macbook air that might come out next year but this is a big turn off if iCloud drive is going to overwhelm the SSD in the AIr.

  • Trumpet mute sounds

I have Jam Pack 4 but find no choices for mutes for the brass section. How would I go about getting the sounds for strsight, cup, and harmon mutes?
    Thank you....

I don't use too many midi instruments, but I have found that the velocity on horns produce variation of the notes. Try fiddling with the velocity. I know on the trumpet that comes with GarageBand, not from a Jam Pack, the high velocity produces a stab then the note slides down. As you lower the velocity, the slide down goes away and the note becomes more staccato. IF there's a mute sound in there, my "guess" would be it is in a lower velocity setting. I may be wrong, but that's where I'd start to look for it.

  • Is there a way to record sounds from keyboard as they are?

So I have a musical keyboard that I've attached to my macbook to record in Garageband. I have a ton of sounds on my keyboard from percussion, brass, piano, etc.
When I record, for example, a trumpet sound from my keyboard into Garageband, Garageband just records the notes using its one version of trumpet or piano or whatever.
How do I get GarageBand to just record the sound as is?
I tried the "real instrument" track option but that ends up record all sound from the microphone on the MacBook and not recording the sound through the MIDI connection.

  • No sound at KDE Startup

Until yesterday my sound worked fine, both at KDE startup and in KDE. After Syu'ing yesterday no sound at KDE startup. However, sound works to extent that aplay plays .wav files. Suspecting that the upgrade altered a config file, I checked the alsa config files and nothing had changed. I don't know where to look in KDE itself other than the sound section, which was also unchanged.
No big deal, upgrading is always a digital experiment. Just curious.
Any intel would be most appreciated.

Correct, arts is running and sound is working. After a bit more research, I realize that I have not stated my question precisely. It is a Systems Notifications issue. None of the System Notifications using sound work, not just the startup sound.
    Many thanks for your efforts.
he he .. ups, i was thinking that arts do not work and you have no sounds in kde --- can be my bad english or not so exact reading :-)
    Control>Sounds & Multimedia>System Notifications>KDE System Notifications
is the only thing to set notifications in kde, but it is a tricky one (the UI is not well made):
    - check if the volume is set ok: in the "Configure - System Notifiactions" check under the button "Player Settings..." if your volume is not muted (you do not need other player)
    - if you select a notification that has sound set ... if you click on the button to test sound, does it work? ... check if the files exist
else i dont know what to try to check why it is not working right ... arts works, so it's not a backend problem ... but a kde-one :-(

  • Is there a way to mute the background music in a slideshow so the audio of an included video can be heard?

I am running iPhoto 11 version 9.4.2 (710.42) on a MacBook Pro.  Some of the slide shows I have developed have videos included along with photos.  I have added background music to these slide shows with the sideshow music selector.  The videos have audio that I want the viewer to hear, however the background music continues to play and the video audio is hard to hear, and when there is music in the audio of the video, the two musical pieces tend to clash. Is there a way to mute the background music so the audio of the video can be clearly heard?
    Thanks,
    Dave

That's called 'ducking' and no, not with iPhoto. You need something with more control of the soundtrack.
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
    iMovie, on every Mac sold.
Others, in order of price: PhotoPresenter  $29
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Pro X $299
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.
