Way to restore iPhone after a backup?

Hello experts,
My mom's friend supposedly backed up our iPhone 3 onto our Toshiba laptop. Now all my mom's pictures & songs from her iPhone are gone.
Tried "Restore" today but it availed nothing.
Ideas?
P.S. iTunes told me it would wipe everything out and then give back her contacts & whatnot, but I don't trust it since we lost all pictures and songs.
Thanks,
Lesley

Backing up an iPhone alone with iTunes does not touch any data on the iPhone. Syncing an iPhone with iTunes does/can affect data on the iPhone.
The iPhone's backup does not include any iTunes content - music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, audio and print books, tones, and 3rd party apps. The iPhone's backup does not include any photos transferred from your computer to the iPhone via the iTunes sync/transfer process.
Syncing iTunes content can be done with iTunes on a single computer only and photos can be transferred from a single computer. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first. This does not touch photos/videos in the iPhone's Camera Roll. The iPhone's Camera Roll is not touched/included with the iTunes sync process.

If you have Time Machine and it ran after the backup you want and before the current backup you can restore it from the Time Machine backup.

You could only restore them if there was somewhere to restore them from.

  • ITunes could not restore iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored...

I replaced a faulty iPhone 4S with a new handset today, another iPhone 4S.  I was certain to backup my previous iPhone 4S to iTunes on my PC before returning the faulty unit.  The new phone was 'set up' at the Apple Store and updated to the current iOS, 7.0.4, as was the faulty unit prior to replacement.  Upon connecting the new unit to iTunes to restore to the most recent restore point from earlier in the day, the following message was shown:
"iTunes could not restore iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored."
I've browsed other forums and have contacted the Apple Store Genius Bar, and will hear from the Lead Genius tomorrow.  In the meantime, I am hoping someone may have information for me on what I may need to do in order to restore my phone as I'd anticipated doing by now.  My photos, email and text messages are what is affected and have not repopulated.  My music is accessable via iCloud without a problem and my contacts were kept via SIM.  I regularly copy my Camera Roll from my iPhone to my computer, and most of my photos are still viewable via Apple TV/My Photo Stream however only through the photos last saved.  The 348 recent photos that were on my faulty unit, and viewable in My Photo Stream were presumedly safe, but have disappeared.
I have yet to shut down or restart my computer, nor have I exited out of iTunes, for the simple reason that I'd anticipated returning home with the new handset and plug it into my computer to restore right away.  I did, but that's as far as I've gotten.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!

Had the exact same problem whilst upgrading my iphone 4 to ios5. Lost all my data.
Backed up ios 4.3 (8F190) iphone4. Upgraded to ios 5.1 (9B176), and then tried to restore.
No joy, repeated the restore attempts countless times - lost all my data
Tried again with a simulated test.
Created a new itunes account on a new PC (64-bit windows 7), latest itunes(10.6.1.7- 64 bit).
As my data is toast, I'm using the ios 5.1 phone to try to see if it was me or an apple bug, or something elsewhich caused this to happen.
After quite a few more hours at it, it looks like a bug in iTunes / ios. I would be very happy to be wrong, though.
Tried repeatedly restoring an ios 4.3 backup to 5.1 - no joy.
Happy to try again - it does restore partially (got the call register transferred, but no SMS'es or anything else).
    Any ideas?

  • Lost internet connection while restoring iphone 4S from backup after iOS 6

    Hi everyone..
I have just updated my iPhone 4S to iOS6 yesterday. It was iOS5.1.1 and was in jailbreak mode before the update.
I did sync my iphone and did the 'Backup' as well before the update by using my latest iTunes via my laptop.
    The iOS6 update was successful.
However, the 'Restore from backup' failed.. many times!! Everytime I tried to Restore from backup, i lost internet connection towards the end of the 'restore in progress'  process so it was never complete. I had to pull out the iphone cable or restart my pc every single time that happened. Because i cannot get an internet connection after that happened. I cannot connect to any wireless network, so I had to restart the pc!
(the iPhone says 'Restore complete' as soon as I pulled out the cable. But phone stays as NEW phone, none of my backup data was restored).
During the 'restore from backup' attempts (via iTunes 10.7 on laptop), I have tried:
    - Restoring to factory settings first and then restore from backup = tried many times and still failed.
    - Uninstalled Apple mobile device and iTunes and re-installed them = still failed.
    - Switched OFF the phone and hold the Home button while connecting to the laptop. Restored to factory settings, then tried to restore from backup = still failed!!
    - switching to different USB ports on my laptop including USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 = no luck, still failed.
    NOTES:
-Laptop is on Windows 7 and have had NO such problems so far. I have been using iPhone since 3GS.
-Internet connection is via wireless router, steady connection.
-My 3GS was on jailbreak mode before. I bought iPhone 4S and successfully restored from my '3GS backup' without any problem.
    -iTunes 10.7 installed/updated.

Nevermind.. I just found the solution to my problem.
I copied the Backup folder into my mate's laptop and did the 'Restore from backup'.
All is good now.. Only need to re-install my apps, soon after all will be back as per normal!

  • IMovie and iPhoto problem after restoring iPhone 5 from backup

Isnt iMovie and iPhoto supposed to be free for iPhone 5 when we bought it?
When i first tried my iphone, imovie and iphoto is there. i even tested it. then after yesterday i restore it from my backup on my Macbook Air, those 2 apps are gone. I dont know what went wrong.
My previous phone is iPhone 4. So supposedly i restore it from the iphone 4 backup data. I doubt that would be the problem, isnt it?

iMoive and iPhoto are not free apps. If you purchased them on your iPhone they should available to download again on your new iPhone.

  • Getting "not enough space on iphone" error when trying to restore iPhone from latest backup in iTunes.

Recently updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 6.1.3 and lost all of my contacts after doing so.  Tried to restore phone to latest backup performed in iTunes but I get an error message that tells me there's not enough space on my iPhone to perform the restoration.  The ultimate problem I'm trying to solve is the loss of my contacts so if there's another way to solve that please let me know. If restoring my phone is a proper solution please help me do so.
    1.  How do I get my contacts back?
    2.  How do I restore my iPhone from latest backup when getting "not enough space" error?
    Please help!

Contacts are not part of the backup. They are seperate and either you need to sync them with an email program such as outlook or use icloud mail, contacts, and calendars on the phone. Unless you did that then the contacts are gone.

  • Advanced Help Needed - Restoring iPhone data from Backup

Upon updating my iPhone 3G[S] from 3.1 to 3.1..2 I did a full restore, I made sure to backup the device before this. Post-update/restore I, accidentally, hit "Set up as new phone" therefore deleting my earlier backup, a backup I have been building on for over 2 years now. When realizing that iTunes had automatically deleted my backup, I quickly opened my file recovery program and got the whole backup folder restored to a separate drive. I moved the whole freshly-recovered back up folder to the correctly directory within iTunes appdata, right next to where my new/empty/useless backups where. Right clicking my device within iTunes and selecting "Restore from backup" my backup from earlier in the day was not listed. After further inspection of the backup folder that I had recovered I noticed that there was no Info.plist file. I went into the other/useless backup that iTunes had just made and brought the info.plist into my older backup folder, now in iTunes my older backup was listed, I selected it and attempted to restore to only receive an error half way through restore "(-32)" to be exact. I checked again and again with my recovery tools to see if the original info.plist file was deleted, it was not, I have no idea why it would be missing, but worse is that I have no idea how I can get iTunes to restore the backup without it, considering it doesn't even recognize it the backup as existing without it, is there way to create a custom info.plist so I could restore or force a restore outside of iTunes? Please any advice would be greatly appreciated !

    Backup c:\users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
If you copy these folders into a new computer in the same location (or the contents of a current long name folder into one of the long name folders in backup) you should be able to restore your old data.
Outside of that maybe track down the location of your outlook PST or address book database. support.microsoft.com probably has some tips.

  • Restoring iPhone from iTunes backup

Sorry guys, I'm new to ios. This may sound like a silly question to many of you but I can't seem to get this working.
I seem to have lost my data in iphone 5s. It is asking to either setup as a new phone or restore from itunes backup. The last back i did was today afternoon when everything was intact. But once the iphone was connected to itunes, it automatically started backing up the device with no data (as it was wiped out), now when I attempt to restore from itunes backup all it does is restore from the latest backup.
This afternoon's successful backup does not seem to get listed in the list of backups. Am I doing something wrong? The reason for doing backup is to restore when in need. This does not make any sense to me. Please help.

Thanks @aHmAda1m33. I have installed and checked iTools - the previous successful backup is not listed but all others after reinitializing are listed. I've lost hope now :-(

  • Best way to restore iPhone

My iPhone 4S has been acting up and the Apple store told me to do a restore. I'm currently backing up to iCloud and am wondering if there's an easier way to restore if I use my Mac since retoring from iCloud takes FOREVER when it's putting all my apps back on.
Do I have to turn iCloud backup off on my iPhone and than restore on my Mac?

Just select Back Up to this computer on the Summary screen in iTunes. This will override the iCloud backup.
It might be a good idea to delete the previous backups on the computer before backing up, as backups are differential, and it's probably better to start with a fresh, complete backup.

  • ITunes keep saying restoring iPhone after updating to iOS 5

I have just upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 5. After updating, my iTunes keep saying restoring iPhone apps. Now I can use my iPhone but without my previous apps. I have also tried closing iTunes and open it again but it still says restoring iPhone apps as soon as it detact my iPhone. Does anyone knows how to solve this problem? By the way, I am using Windows.

I had the same issue with my iPad. The iPad itself thought it was fully updated (had taken me to the iCloud set up etc) but iTunes insisted it was still restoring apps. I closed down iTunes each time via the task manager.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, which didn't help.
What I did in the end was disconnect the iPad while iTunes was still running - without any attempt to eject it. When I then plugged it back in, it came up with an error message along the lines of "An attempt to restore this iPad was interrupted. Do you wish to continue attempting to restore?" I hit cancel, and I was then able to do a manual sync as normal, and all my app data was restored.

  • Restore iphone to first backup,,,plz help

can anybody help me telling that how can i restore my iphone to first backup

I've already answered your question. The only backup you can restore from is the backup/backups listed in iTunes. If you performed a sync after deleting the contacts on your phone, that means they were erased from your iPhone backup. If you regularly backup your computer & all important data, if might be possible to retrive a previous iPhone backup from your computer backup.
