Way tooooooo many Failed Passcode Attempts in the Restrictions section !

Hi, my 2 1/2 year-old daughter locked me in !
I usually lock the iPad using the Restrictions panel (General section in Settings) before giving her the device, and it happened several times that she handed it over to me... with the "6 Failed Passcode Attempts" red message in the Enter Passcode panel, which means she randomly tried typing digits in that area, which all failed, which is fine... except that I just found out that all of a sudden this time the Enter Passcode panel is now LOCKED for good and says "Try again in 220 174 minutes".
I sync'ed the device to my Mac to no avail following Apple knowledge base suggestion. I Guess these are just too many failed code attempts.
BTW I do backup (automatically in iTunes) regularly but I would like to save the restore hassle because of 32GB of data to restore (half the built-in 64GB) or I would like to be SURE that this cures the problem.
Thanks in advance !

There is an easier answer.
My kid's phone had the same problem.  I thought he was trying to hack the application restriction passcode but it turns out that he was rolling the system date forward to cheat in zombieville which apparently screwed up the lockout time restriction.
And this uncovered a loophole for bypassing the application restriction lockout.  If you can, just roll the system date forward past the lockout expiration and enter your passcode again.
It worked for me.
This 'could' be used by a determined user to bypass the lockout feature and brute-force passcode-guess the phone (good luck with that!) but at least it allowed me to unlock the phone immediately instead of waiting the 19,200 minutes (aprox 2 week) lockout or having to factory-reset the phone like some folks apparently resorted to.
Apple - don't fix this, it's not a bug, it's a feature.  Right?

  • Can apple move the Passcode setting into the Restrictions section ?

    Hello,
I guess this would be an Apple development question.  I work for a school district trying to manage many iPads.  I can lock down most of the settings I do not want the students to access in the Restrictions area.  One major flaw I discovered is the Passcode in Settings.  Students are setting a passcode and locking the units which is causing a very frustrating situation for the folks that have to support these (restore the device).
If Apple would move the Passcode setting into the Restrictions area we would be able to lock it down.  Does this make sense ?
    Thanks

The ability to set a restriction on the passcode has been brought up on many occasions, but to date nothing has changed. You can add your voice via the feedback page here, if you wish:

  • Data wipeout or locking due to one to many failed passcode attempts

I just noticed that on the iPad there is a setting where if you have one to many failed attempts at the passcode the data is wiped from the iPad. Yet I don't see anything like it on the iPhone.
Is there something akin to it, like after one too many tries the phone locks you from any more attempts?

    Yes there is.
Settings => General => Passcode lock
Turn on erase option for 10 failures.

  • Out of curiosity: Will Activation Lock still work after an iPhone auto-erases on the 10th failed passcode attempt?

Believe me, I'm no chicken when it comes to security. Using a combination of a strong alphanumeric passcode laced with non-Latin homoglyphs, Activation Lock (which Find My iPhone automatically enables), a disabled Siri when the phone is locked, a disabled Control Center when the phone is locked (both of those are security risks due to Airplane Mode), and Data Protection (erase phone after 10 failed passcode attempts), there's no doubt someone other than me is going to have a real hard time trying to use my device...
... Or so it seems. I've been digging through the Apple support articles to find out what exactly Activation Lock does, and I noticed that if someone goes into Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings and erases the device in a seemingly authorized manner, Activation Lock gets disabled with it. However, if someone else tries to erase it, or if it's erased remotely, then it will still display the Activation Lock message and require login with the username and passcode used to log in initially. Here's the real issue, though: Not one of those articles mentions what happens when you have Data Protection enabled and Data Protection happens to get set off by a thief attempting to brute force one's passcode, and how nicely Activation Lock plays with it. Does anyone else have that information, just in case?

While I have yet to confirm this with Apple, my understanding is that the auto-erase wil leave the Activation Lock intact. AL wouldn't be of much use if a thief could get around it by just entering in the wrong passcode multiple times. You'll forgive me though, I trust, if I don't try to test this with my own device.
    Regards.

I have forgotten the code to my restrictions, I have 9 failed passcode attempts, how can I unlock this part of my iPhone4? Help please!!

Is the camera function restricted in Settings/General/Restrictions?
What happens when you double click the home button, with your phone showing  the lock screen?

  • I cant remember my "Reset All Settings" Password and i tried putting all the passwords i remember and it says "9 failed Passcode Attempts" and then it says "Try again in 60 minutes "

i tried putting all the passwords i remember and it says "9 failed Passcode Attempts" and then it says "Try again in 60 minutes "
    Can Somebody Please Help Me.?

The passcode for Reset All Settings is the same one used to unlock the phone.  How have you managed to unlock it without encountering this???
If you can't remember your passcode, restore the phone in iTunes using the same computer it was last synced with.  If you try to use another computer, you will be asked for the passcode and your only choice is to force recovery mode.

  • Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts

Having just upgraded to the latest 2.1 software there is now the security setting to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts - which I can't turn off as I am synching with work email. Can anyone confirm that this is 10 CONSECUTIVE attempts as 'fat finger syndrome' often means I take a couple of gos each time. Thanks!

A quick search of Apple Support yielded this:
"If you repeatedly enter the wrong passcode, iPhone or iPod touch will be disabled for longer intervals, before you can try again. After too many unsuccessful attempts, you won't be able to try again until you connect to the computer you normally sync with. Note that starting with iPhone 2.1 software, there is a setting to cause the device to erase itself after 10 consecutive incorrect password attempts. This setting is off by default. It can be turned on by tapping Settings > General > Passcode Lock after you enter a correct passcode."
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212
You can search Apple support for this as well. It is probably in the manual as well:

  • App to track failed Passcode Attempts

Does anyone know an App that can track failed passcode attempts or even create a log of what apps are used with time stamps?
I now work in an area where phones are left in an accessible area and not allowed in the main building.  It's fairly secure except that anyone I work with has access to it.  I was thinking I would like to know if someone at least tries to get into my phone.
    Thoughts?

There are no apps that can do this, Apple would have to add this functionality. As long as your phone is passcode protected, you have nothing to worry about.

  • IPod Touch - Restrictions Four Digit Passcode - Failed Passcode Attempts?

I've have forgotten the restrictions four-digit passcode I set up on my iPod Touch. I've have so far entered the wrong passcode 11 times. I now have to wait one hour between each attempt.
Is there a limit to the number of attempts permitted?

There is a setting you can put on the Touch to erase the data after 10 failed passcode attempts. If you're sure you tried 11 times and your Touch did not erase, you must not have enabled that option.

  • 10 failed passcode attempts but nothing happened, help?

So I got 10 failed passcode attempts on my iPod but it did not erase it's data. I had the option ticked to do so, any help?

Reset your device by holding the sleep/wake and home (shown below) buttons until the apple logo pops up, that should solve the problem. Don't worry it's completely harmless.  Then, make sure it's on and try failing 10 times again

Reset the password and that will take care of activating your iPhone.

  • 10 failed passcode attempts

I Have 10 failed passcode attempts. What will happen if i enter it wrong once again? As far as i recall, i had not selected the 'erase all data' option. Please help me.

Well, due to forgotten passcode device needs to be restored and setup as a new device. Suppose that you've backup, do not install it since, backup also including passwords.
If you ve iCloud account signed in device, check your contacts on icloud.com see if it's synced or not.
Besides, you can try to import photos/videos manually to PC if you connect device to PC before and tap on trust before. Otherwise, you can view the content before unlocking screen.

  • There have been 7,039 failed login attempts in the last 30 minutes

    Hi,
I am trying to find out the cause for an OEM alert we received:
There have been 7,039 failed login attempts in the last 30 minutesThe cause is ofcourse known, but I can't find out why the application anyway was able to do 7000+ login attempts within half an hour. The account should have locked after 10 attempts
The perticular account has a DEFAULT profile.
Auditing is on, so if we look into DBA_AUDIT_SESSION it is clearly seen that within 1 minute approx 1200 failed login attempts occured without the account being locked.

The above login attempts come from three application server of which I don't know how they handle failed logins.
Can anyone point me into a search direction as to why the account didn't lock. Just for completeness some extra info about the account and the DEFAULT profile:

Edit: For the record, after I discovered the above I changed the DEFAULT profile, so the account would not unlock itself anymore. If this problem will occur in the future, maybe we can get more info as the account - if it gets locked- should stay locked now:

I cann't say that resource_limit is not TRUE, because you are saying "If we retry the login with a incorrect password manually from SQLplus, after 10 login attempts the account gets locked as expected.", so it means profile is working for the "KRAMPV" user.
The interesting thing is USERHOST is changing, so another option is the listener log should also have information about the failed connection attempts.
My another guess is duplicate user in the database i.e. one is KRAMPV and another is "krampv" (with quotation mark). Just check in dba_users that is there something like exists or not.....
    select upper(username),count(*) from dba_users group by upper(username) having count(*) > 1;

    Girish SharmaHi Girish,
    resource_limit is set to FALSE.
And we've tested the locking with another user, because KRAMPV is used by the application that is running and we didn't want to risk that it got locked
USERHOST is not changing, there are 4 hosts ( application servers ) doing the same thing, so connection requests are coming from 4 hosts concurrently.
There is luckily no duplicate user.
Thanks anyway, we will keep investigating. I also sent the information to the application provider.

  • HT1430 my daughter's ipod has been disabled after too many wrong password attempts. The ipod was not synced to a computer. How can we get it started?

My daughter's ipod touch has been disabled after too many wrong password attempts.
The ipod was never synced to the computer so can't connect to itunes.
How else can we enable the ipod touch again?

Restore, if iTunes will let you.  Everything except the password will be restored.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  In your case, choose any computer with iTunes software.  Be forewarned that it takes a long time.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.
