Ways to flash my 7800 GTX 512mb with what available roms ?

Hello fellow PPC users,
I am new on this forum, and hope I ask my quastions the right way
I got me a 7800 GTX 512mb (PC card) for my PowerMac G5 Quad running Leopard.
I read a lot of discussions about this but I never came across of a topic with instructions about how to flash cards directly with a PowerMac. I have a tool that's called nvflash 1.1 on my mac and there are options like dump rom en flash rom etc....
Is this possible to use this tool to get it done ? And can anyone provide me with a working rom running the 7800 GTX 512mb on Leopard.
Thanks in advance for your inputs.
Greetings from Belgium

Ok I will have to do that this evening because I am on my work now and my email program is not configurated.
I already had your website in my favorites but didn't know it was yours
Thx for sharing your experience with the PPC community

  • Power Mac G5 7800 GTX 512mb

Hi everyone, not been a member here long but I am in desperate need of some help and/or direction
I realise this is probably a heavily discussed topic but i'm another guy in need of some help.
I own a DC 2.0 Power Mac G5 and it had a 6600 128mb graphics card which subsequently died the other day. I have gone ahead and bought a Dell 7800 GTX 512mb graphics card with the intention of flashing it.
I have no problem with the flashing procedure itself, I am having trouble locating a ROM for it. At first I thought I could flash the Quadro FX 4500 2149 retail ROM but later found out that the Quadro FX 4500 ROM needs HEX editing which I cant locate a guide for the procedure. Ideally, if at all possible I would like somebody to provide me with the ROM file but in the meantime I am trying to make headway myself.
I've contacted japamac through his website to see if he could provide me with the ROM and am still awaiting a response. I realise the guy is busy so i'm trying to do the work myself. Does anyone have a link to a guide to hex edit the Quadro FX 4500 ROM to work on the 7800 GTX 512mb.
Any help is massively appreciated guys. Thanks for looking.

  • 7800 GTX 512MB ROM??

    Hello folks!
I just scored a nice 7800 GTX 512MB off ebay for a whopping $27. Of course Id love to flash this and pop it in my quad G5.
Problem is, the only two 512mb ROMS I found both dont work...
I got them both from here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1552556
One of them will give me a slightly readable display that is partially ghosted and has lines in it, and the other rom gives me an unreadable screen with squiggly lines all in it like colored "snow" on TV when theres no signal.
That being said, I noticed when I was using nvflash, nvflash saw my gtx as a "GT" when one of the ROMS flashed which nvflash saw as "GTX" in the ROM file itself, yet the other one after flashing properly showed my gpu as a GTX, yet it saw the ROM file as a quadro file. Not sure whats up there.
Currently I have a 7800GT with a silent cooler in my quad
Any help is appreciated! I already tried emailing japamac but he didnt respond :c

I had a copy of it at one time, never tested it, & it was on equipment stolen a couple of years ago.

  • PowerMac G5 Quad GeForce 7800 GTX 512mb or Quadro 4500 FX

Hey, best regards for all users. I have a question about changing graphics card. I'll be gratefull for all help.
    I have PowerMac G5 Quad Late 2005 - M9592LL/A and OS X Leopard 10.5.8.
My card is GeForce 7800GTX 512MB and Quadro fx4500 model p348.
I'm looking for ROM for this cards for Mac G5. I want to change 6600 for 7800GTX 512MB or Quadro. Cards tested on PC are working.
Anyone can help ? I can't find any info about ROM for this cards.
    Thanks all !

Both the X1900 (R580) and the 7800 GTX (G70) are capable GPUs on advanced cards, both targeting and supporting Shader Model 3.0. 3D was a focal point in development for either card.
Approaches for shader implementation are very different between the two cards.
Arguements for either abound, but, 3D performance will be a defining factor to show shader prowess.
Architecturally, the cards are very different, but, in the end, memory bandwidth, an important performance feature, is highest with the 7800 GTX; 54.4 GB/s vs. 38 GB/s for the Mac Edition Radeon.
The next X19xx card, the X1950, almost doubled memory bandwidth over the X1900.
I know guys that use flashed X1950 (512 MB) cards really like them.
Support of DirectX 9 and Shader Model 3.0 make either card more than is necessary for OS X Core Image and OpenGL requirements.
You bring up a very important point regarding application specific performance.
Games are one form of benchmark, but not always indicative of real world performance.
In Photoshop, CS4, the 7800 GTX is a fully supported card, whereas the X1900 (256 MB) card is not supported. The 512 MB version of the X1900 is supported, but doesn't help owners of the Mac Edition.
There are pros and cons with either card, eventually driver and OpenGL support being the defining point.
Early driver issues with the X1900 in OS X and a relatively short retail availability likely affect the lack of empirical data on the cards performance.
The following, though comparing a X1900XT (not the little brother X1900GT which is the G5 version) with a Geforce 7800 GTX on platforms other than Mac, the comparisons do show pro oriented application performance.
Though not necessarily applicable to OS X and PPC Macs, I thought it to be an interesting set of tests.
    http://ixbtlabs.com/articles2/cpu/nvidia-vs-ati-on-amd-and-intel.html
Either card is great, either is way better than the 6600, and, as you point out, availability is an important factor.

  • GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB

PC users can now get a souped up GeForce 7800 GTX with 512MB of DDR3:

I wish Apple would offer that same card with Apple firmware for the Dual-Core G5s.

Amen to that. Cheers on your great site, too!

  • Correct rom for Geforce 7800 GTX for Mac G5?

I just got my hands on a Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX 512 and would like to flash it to work on my Quad G5. I know it is floaing around out there somewhere in our Ether-Space. Would some kind soul please share? Thanks

I recently acquired a Late 2005 PowerMac G5 2.3 Dual Core. It came with the sluggish GeForce 6600. I too am interested in flashing a 7800 GTX with a ROM for Mac.
Will any brand 7800 GTX qualify? I understand there may be a problem with cards having different ROM sizes. Could anyone list specific brand cards they would recommend for this purpose? I know I shouldn't expect to find any new ones. I will look in all the usual places.
Also, is it important to get the GTX and not the GT?
    Thanks.

  • Slot Fans Go Crazy, After Installed a Flashed 7800 GTX

Hi everyone, after installed a flashed 7800 GTX, my Slot fan ran 2300 plus rpm when runing a 3D rendering (Sounds like flight engine, but the GPU temperture is very cool, around 50 degree).
However, Some people told me it was the Apple safty software problem, wasnt the graphic card Bios problem. Does everyone experiece that before? Please describe the experience about after install a new graphic card (like 7800 GT, Qadro Fx 4500) please.

    Hello, I got a AMD64 3200 (socket 754) processor with a K8N Neo Platinum motherboard.
I want to upgrade my videocard and I am thinking of a GeForce 7800 GTX. Because of the futurure I want a pci-e card, so I am thinking of changing my motherboard to a  K8N Neo3 motherboard. I searched everywhere online (including this forum and the msi site) but I can't find if this motherboard is compatible with a GeForce 7800 GTX. Can anyone provide me with the answer? Thanks.

  • MSI Geforce 7800 GTX with MSI Nvidia GeForce 7800GT in SLI?

Hi. I bought the MSI Nvidia GeForce 7800GT a few months ago with the intention of buying a second to run in SLI. Now i can't seem to find anywhere that sells it at a decent price. Originally i bought it from www.ebuyer.co.uk but they have discontinued it.
Could i buy a MSI Geforce 7800 GTX and run it in SLI? They should have the same gpu and the specs aren't that different.

  • NVidia 7800 GTX

I've been checking the recent news from nVidia since July and there have been unconfirmed reports that the next release of PowerMac (supposedly mid 2006) will ship with the 7800 GTX processor. I'm looking at purchasing a PowerMac within the next 6 months and this would be great if it were true (having the 256-bit interface, capable of 54.4GB/sec total memory bandwidth and 512MB of memory), but is it? Has anyone heard anything that could help confirm this? I've e-mailed nVidia and gotten no response that could confirm or deny either way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but no one outside of Apple knows anything about future product releases. Anything anyone here would post would be pure speculation which isn't allowed here (the Discussions are for technical support on existing products). There are a number of rumor sites which you can read, but as to whether any rumors they report have any validity, your guess will be as good as ours.

  • Geforce 7800 gtx card in my mac ?

    Hi,
to troubleshoot a display problem with my MacG5, ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1121100&tstart=0 ) I would like to install a second graphic card in it. I have a PC Nvidia Geforce 7800 gtx card. Can I install this without any problem in my Mac ?
Do I have to modify anything (flash the card ROM) to make this work ?
Any info on this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Guillaume.

No...the card won't work. Unless you can flash it to work in a Mac. That's no easy task.

  • GeForce 7800 GTX... the best card for a PCIe G5 Power Mac?

I have started out on the rocky road to upgrade the graphics card on my Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz running Mac OS X 10.5.8. The standard card, a GeForce 6600, does not do justice to this wonderful computer, and struggles with any serious video work.
The first step is easy – deciding on the best card. A little Googling shows that the GeForce 7800 GTX wins hands down over the competition.
The next needs patience – these cards appear from time to time on eBay; I will need a 512 MB PCI-e version (not 256 MB) as I am running 10.5.
I've waited a month or two, put in a winning bid and the card has arrived. Now all I need is the code to flash the ROM to make it work in myG5. Not so fast! I'll need a 128kb ROM chip! The idea of using a soldering iron terrifies me, so I'll have to find someone, who does this sort of thing for a living, to remove the 64kb ROM from my 7800 GTX and solder on a 128kb ROM.
But what's is the right spec/manufacturer/supplier for the 128 kb ROM?
If I am lucky my friend with the soldering iron may know. If not, I'm stuck. I've not been able to find this information anywhere on the Internet.
Now all I need is the right code for the ROM. It seems that there are two versions that people have used: one, which seems quite common, is lightly edited Quadro FX 4500 ROM code which does not use the full power of the 7800 GTX, which after flashing reports itself as a FX 4500; the other, which seems to be as rare as gold dust, has been fine-tuned to use the 7800 GTXs full potential. Cards flashed with this version report correctly as 7800 GTX. I really want this optimised code, but neither version is available from any of the usual places.
    Can anyone please help?

Many thanks to japamac, who kindly sent me an e-mail which put me on the right track re finding the ROM code, editing it and flashing.
I also now know that I no longer have to worry about soldering ROM chips. Yippee! The 7800 GTX code has been 'shrunk' to fit on a 64kb ROM.

  • Best way to flash Bios for z87 G45 Gaming mobo?

Alright guys. My computer has been acting up a little bit recently with any USB devices on the PC tower iself acting up. Both the 3.0 ports and the regular 2.0 ones too. Constant disconnects. Think it's time to update my Bios. Currently running 1.5 and I believe that 1.9 is the most recent.
What's the best way to flash the Bios. I've done it before via the flash tool about a year ago but cant remember anything about how I went about it.
Is this still the best way? Any tips and hints on what to do, and more importantly, what not to do.
Will I have to update the ME version too or will that be done at the same time.
I see in Live Update that there is also a new bios for my GPU (MSI GTX 970). Should I let Live update install that for me?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Best Way to flash bios?

I've currently been reading about flashing bios, which I have discovered numerous ways to accomplish the same task. My question is what does everyone preferr, and how can u flash a bios if you dont have a floppy drive (assuming your using a beta bios and cannot use the windows bios update).
The first method I have seen is by flashing the bios using 2 discs... one a win 98 boot disk (which I had to find online because I'm running xp)... the other a disc with the award patching prog and the bios itself....it seems to me this is the only method in which users using windows xp (home/pro) with NTFS can flash their bios (Except option 2 which is not recommended as being safe). It works by creating a "ROM drive" in the systems memory and can avoid using the C: as it is protected by NTFS.... This is unfortunatly a pain unless you have floppies and a floppy drive.
Option 2 involes using one disc as a boot disk (xp boot disk) and then putting the bios files on that disc aswell.. This will cause the flashing to take place reading purely off the floppy (which I have read is not recommended, and I must agree as floppy drives are pretty old technology that has frequent problems).
The third and final option is to use the Windows Bios Update program which installes the bios with xp running (something I still dont fully understand how can be accomplished)... the big downside to this method is that as far as I can tell only the official bios can be used to do this... ruling out all beta versions from being used ... a dissapointment in my opinion.
In conclusion, what do you all recomend and/or do you have methods that are safer or easier? Thanks For your time
