WB Defaults in ACR

I have ACR White Balance set to "AS Shot", which, for my D90 is 4800K. I have a D80, also set to that figure. When you check WB in ACR metadata, it says Manual. for both. So far, so good. Now here's the problem.
The D80 WB was accidentally reset from Manual to Auto. Everything else was untouched. We first looked at the images in ViewNX, as Photoshop is not on that computer (it is calibrated, however). I immediately knew what happened because the shift in WB over a range of similar images during shooting evening light on the beach was very obvious. My partner did the shooting and she was immediately enamored of the output. Some of the images were unique to her (and myself) as we never had this happen before. Some frames she didn't want touched. But I knew I may have a problem in ACR, so I opened the files there.
They all reverted to the 4800K WB setting, now called "Custom" in ACR. When I select "As Shot" I get the camera's WB value, which I want. So what happened? Why did the WB come up as Custom 4800K when it should have stayed As Shot at about 6500K, which is the K value set by the camera? When is As Shot not As Shot? It appears the K value trumps As Shot, and in order to preserve it, ACR changes the setting to Custom.
Up till now, no problem. But now I need a new setting for those kinds of images available. My preference is that As Shot is exactly that. If I decide to set WB in the camera to say 5500K, I don't want it to be the old 4800K.
Then we have Auto as an ACR selection, really complicating matters, especially for a novice at Photoshop/ACR.
Let's summarize.
ACR set to Defaults
1) Camera WB set Manual, WB value, firm at 4800K. ACR says "As Shot", WB 4800K
2) Camera WB set Auto, WB Value varies, ACR now says "Custom" WB, 4800K, no longer at "As Shot".
Picking As Shot restores to camera value.
How can I inform "As Shot" to actually use the camera values? How did 4800K get set in stone?

Yeah, that's the only answer. And here is where I got snookered.
I have both cameras set to 4800. But the D80 actually does not set 4800. It sets 4700; Tint-2. The D90 sets 4800: Tint -4 So, some years back, I set ACR for the D80 to Custom and manually set 4800K;Tint -4... and forgot about it! Why I didn't catch it on this batch is that the colors were so far off. The difference between 4700 and 4800 isn't big and if all I had was the D80, I would have left it there. But shooting the same with both cameras, correcting the D80 to actually exhibit the same WB as the D90 became prudent. For one thing, we would have arguments over the differences between the D90 and the D80 (which is the "right" color). My SO is a colorist and while I can see subtle differences (and maybe not as sharply as she does) I don't fret much over that. Well, maybe more than I used to. She is a good teacher about color!.
It POed me when I first saw that 4700 figure from the D80. In it's menu, the option is 4800, not 4700, dammit! But I knew I would be tweaking it in ACR if necessary using the WB dropper.
So now I have some decisions to make. Much of the output, in fact, all of it until her last session is set to that 4800 by using custom. Now I am sure she will want to use auto, that is until she sees that it will eventually work against her, even using the Nikon View NX on her computer. I think I can use Preset for making two choices available; Custom 4800 or As Shot, but I don't know for sure.
I gotta go make some coffee. 6:30 comming up and I haven't had any!

ACR 7 Basic panel defaults

For my GH2 (.rw2 raw files) the Basic panel defaults are Exposure = +.54, Contrast = +31, Whites = -15, and all other at 0.
For my S100 (.cr2 raw files) Blacks = +25, all other at 0.
From this limited sample I deduce that each camera model has a baked-in set of defaults on the Basic panel, apparently independent of the individual profile. Is this now the game?

I might be misunderstanding you here (still quite early for me and coffee just kicking in!), but your defaults for PV2012 should all go to zero for each of the controls, and not vary between cameras. I therefore suspect that you previoulsy set some personalised defaults in ACR 6 (or whichever version you were using), and that ACR 7 has picked up on these and set the PV2012 defaults to take that into account? This happened with me when I first used LR4: I'd tweaked my default settings for ACR, and they were picked up by LR - for example, in ACR 5.6, my blacks were set to 3, and that became +10 in LR4/PV2012.
For the time being, I've reset my defaults to zero until I get a proper handle on PV2012 as it's a whole new ball game (but so far, I'm finding it to be far better than PV2010).

How do I open muliple raw files in ACR hosted by Photoshop?

This one is annoying the hell out of me. I used to highlight multiple raw files in Bridge and just press Enter (being the equivalent to File -> Open) and the images would all open together in one ACR interface with the filmstrip down the side. Now, however, one file opens and if I hit cancel or done, the second image THEN opens, and so on and so forth. If instead of pressing Enter I choose File -> Open in Camera Raw or I right-click and Open in Camera Raw, it works fine and does what I want (or if I click the aperture symbol on the toolbar at the top). It's a minor annoyance I suppose but and annoyance nonetheless.
The worst part is that it worked fine until I uninstalled CS5.1. I had CS5.1 no problem, then installed CS6/CC alongside it. I got eveything working how I wanted in CS6/CC and then uninstalled CS5.1. I may be wrong on the exact timing of the problem and therefore it may be a Red Herring, but it seems fairly close together when this started.
Notes: There is no expansion bar on the left of ACR that is just hiding the filmstrip. Which is consistant with the fact that the second image does in fact open after I close the first. So they are clearly being treated as seperate open actions. Also, in Bridge, Edit -> Preferences -> General: 'Double-click Edits Camera Raw Settings in Bridge', ticked or unticked makes no difference. Also in Photoshop, Edit - Preferences -> File Handling: 'Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for Supported Raw Files', ticked or unticked makes no difference.
I have also tried changing the above mentioned options, closing PS and Bridge so the preferences file is updates, changing them back to how I want and closing so the preferences file is updated and I get the same results.
I hope I've made it clear what the issue is, and any help would be much appreciated for what may seem a minor thing.

I don't have CC just CS6. In Photoshop if I use open and select multiple raw file and click open Raw file open one at a time in ACR. One after the other. If I use Adobe Bridge and select mutiple raw files and open with the default application ACR open with all raw file or double click. It also opens like that from CS6 mini brdge. In any case the bridge must be running.

How do I copy Camera RAW defaults to another computer?

I use Photoshop CS6 and Adobe Camera RAW to process RAW files (D700). I have ACR preferences set to make the defaults ASA specific, which means I have 41 defaults for ACR. I have a folder of images shot with the D700 that includes one image for each ASA the camera can select when auto ASA is activated in the D700, that's where I get 41 ASA values. I use the images in this folder to set a default for each ASA value and then select one at a time in Camera RAW and click to set a new default for ACR (Adobe Camera RAW). These defaults are saved in some location on the computer, but I don't know where. I would like to copy these saved defaults to another computer that is also running Photoshop CS6. Does anyone know where the defaults are located, or is there a better way to accomplish this task?

If I understand what you said, I think this will only save RAW Defaults for that specific image conditions. I have the RAW converter set to make it specific to image ASA and for the D700 it can set 41 different ASA values for the image. I have 41 Camera RAW Defaults for the D700 and would like to transfer all to the second computer, that's the reason I am looking for options to accomplish this task.
I have a folder with 41 D700 NEF files with each having a different ASA value. I select this folder of images in Camera RAW, adjust each image to the defaults I want - the main difference is noise settings. When I have the settings I want, I click the Done button. I then open the images again in Camera RAW, select one at a time and select the "Save New Camera Raw Defaults". Now when I open new NEF files for the D700 it will automatically apply the Default I want based on the image ASA.
I currently copy the folder with the 41 images that was saved with the defaults I want and open them one at a time and save a new default on the second computer. If I copy the "Camera RAW" folder it should give me all the same defaults, custom camera profiles, custom curver, settings, etc.
I have not tried this yet, but if it works it will save a lot of time keeping the two computers in sync relative to these parameters.

Help: Can't open TIFF in ACR from bridge. ACR not an "Open With" choice

I have a TIFF file on my OS 10.4.11 desktop. I open CS3 Bridge and select the file ( A TIF from a scan generated in SilverFast AI Studio) I right click the file and the drop-down menu shows me CS3 as an "Open With" choice but I do not see ACR as a choice. I choose CS3 and it opens in CS3. As I have TIFF and JPEG files as a default for ACR when I choose a JPG and CS3 it opens in ACR... why not this TIFF? Could it be that as it was scanned with a bit depth of 48 ACR can not interpret it?
How can I add ACR as a choice in "Open With" so that when I right click any image file on my Mac desktop I see ACR as a choice?

I actually slightly prefer the NikonScan software to Silverfast's so I only use NikonScan with my Coolscan and scan to 14-bit RGB Tiffs.
For the larger format film, I use Silverfast with the Epson 4990 and do the same thing.
Then I open the resulting Tiffs in ACR 4.4.1 (hosted by Bridge) to do any preliminary color- and tone- corrections before proceeding to Photoshop.
I have not found a need for HDR when working from Color NEGATIVE film (but I do remove the ridiculous Shadow/HL clipping that these scanner software manufacturers seem to program into their default settings!) and I don't use "slide" film.

ACR 4.6 Nikon D90 vs Nikon VIEW NX colors/exposure/brightness

Went from a D80 to a D90. Downloaded ACR 4.6 and all of the beta camera profiles for the D90 a month ago or so. When I view my NEF's in Nikon View NX the colors/exposure is fine. When I view them for the D90 in ACR, they are a little washed out. When I converted a couple of NEF's to DNG it appears the results are better,but I don't know if that would hold true for all. I do not want to convert everything to DNG though, plus it does not appear that DNG files can be viewed in View NX.
Haven't put enough hours into researching this yet to figure out if I'm just going to have to convert every NEF file in ACR 4.6 or spring for NX2 and start using that as a supplement-which I really, really do not want to do-but the NEF's look fine there.
I'm holding off buying a new computer until the new PC OS systems come out and at that time assume CS5 will be out by then and will upgrade that also.
Was anyone built a camera preset for the D90 to combat this problem with CS3 ACR 4.6 or encountered the same? Just looking for any input. I've only had the camera a little over a month. (Using XP) Thank you.

Both original NEF raws and DNG from those same raws really should appear the same in Camera Raw 4.6. The only potential difference is whether or not you've actually selected one of the other DNG Profiles in a D90 raw and made that the ACR "default". ACR and DNG Converter share the same "defaults". So, what profile is selected in the Calibration panel with a D90 raw? Which one looks better (from the drop down list)? If you like one of the others you can change the ACR default to be that newly selected profile...

Where is ACR 5.1 installed and why isnt it coming up with Pshop CS4

You did not install it correctly. :/
Make sure you have the correct location, starting the path in your ROOT level Library, not your user Library; and remove any other ACR plug-in you may have in the CS4 installation.
At the present time, you can even use the automatic updater to update the ACR version version (5.0) installed by default to ACR 5.1.

Defaults, Image Settings, Etc.

Everyday I am learning a new technique in CS4, but I missed something basic way back in ACR 4.0 and now that ACR 5.0 supports the JPEG I am more confused. I need to know the relationship of the RAW preview and JPEG in the camera and when I change ACR Defaults ( for example after adjusting an image.), and how to use Image Settings, and Custom Settings properly. If I change my camera settings to Vivid, for example, what happens to ACR Defaults? Which takes precedent?
I find the Adobe videos quite instructive and if someone can point me to one in regard to the above, know that I am grateful. Of course a text explanation would, in my thinking, be more personal.

Oh, it's absolutely critical to properly set your exposure–exposure, ISO and White Balance ARE indeed picked up and used by Camera Raw...it's just that all of the other "camera adjustments" are not. However, none of the other camera "tweaks" to your image are real...they're just metadata tags that get picked up by the camera makers' software but are ignored by ACR.
So, your actual ISO and exposure ARE important...those are indeed baked into the raw file. The White-point is picked up and used by default in ACR but you are capable of changing it...but color space, tone curves or other camera adjustments like converting to B&W are strictly done to JPEGs, not raws...

.XMP files no longer appear as sidecars--how to clear metadata?

Bridge and Photoshop are set to save metadata in .XMP sidecar files, but sidecar files no longer appear. That is, up till a few days ago, .XMP files appeared when I opened raw files, but no longer. The drop-down menu is still set to save metadata in sidecar files.
Cannot clear metadata in Bridge. I can select "Camera Raw Defaults" in ACR, but that doesn't clear cropping.
1) How do I return already-stored metadata to .XMP files?
2) How do I get PSCS2 to store future metadata as .XMP files?
3) How do I clear metadata currently stored in ACR/PS database?
4) What did I do to cause system to store metadata in ACR/PS database despite being set to save in sidecar files?

Excellent point. I have no idea. Maybe this was only working for
.PSDs/etc. (which contain the metadata embedded in the file itself[,
right?]). I may have been deluding myself this whole time. It's
possible that it never really worked the way I thought it did to begin with.
But, more specifically, here's the current question: If I have this
file (which is a backup from long ago):
J:\backup of M90\Documents and Settings\philipt\Application
Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\Database
...assuming that drives are currently mapped (by drive letter) the same
way they were when that backup was made), can I just replace the current
file:
C\Documents and Settings\philipt\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\Database
...with the one from J: and expect it to work correctly?
What's the worst that can happen if I do this?
BTW, the file on J: is 2,569 Kb; the (new) one on C: is 2,754 Kb. This
doesn't seem to bode well, since the old one (J:) should have much, much
more data in it (assuming that the "Database" file per se is where the
metadata is stored): the older file has complex,
multi-tiered data for 10s of 1000s of images. "??"

Wrong white balance in Bridge

Since I reinstalled my computer I have a problem with displaying Canon CR2 files in Bridge - white balance in just incorrect. When I open it in Camera RAW, for about 1 second it displays still incorrectly, but then colours of the picture change and white balance is correct - I can even see that histogram changes slightly at the same moment. Than it opens in Photoshop correctly too. White balance is set to "as shot". I have PS CS6 and ACR 8.1 as part of Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium (all updates are installed). Anyone can solve the problem? I can say that I tried to install Creative Suite on 2 different computers and the problem is in both cases.

But when I open fool preview in Bridge (space, then left mouse click), after a short time when preview renders, the picture becomes fine. So I wonder what picture is displayed in Bridge non-full-screen preview?
Let's first focus on your preference settings. Try these settings:
In Bridge under Adobe Bridge CC open the Camera Raw preferences.
In the section 'Default Image Settings' make sure the the above 2 are NOT checked (Auto tone and auto grayscale)
It is useful to have checked defaults to specific serial number when you did generate a custom default in ACR and iso specific is only useful if you have saved all different iso settings as different ACR defaults.
Then go to same menu and open Bridge Preferences.
In the section Cache under options have only a checkmark in front of 'Keep 100% previews in Cache', don't use the option to export cache to folder.
Also increase the slider for cache size a bit, somewhere half way or left to halfway should be good enough.
Under Advanced / miscellaneous only have a check mark in front of generate monitor sized previews, leave the other 2 blank.
Then in the content window with the problem files be sure to have no hidden cache folders. Use menu view / show hidden files and search for document icons with BridgeCache and BridgeCacheT. If they are here delete both to the trash.
Then restart Bridge and try again
Also might be related to not having synced the color settings in Bridge when having more Suite apps installed from CC.
Any advice how can I check it?
When you have only PS installed Bridge uses the color settings you have saved in there, otherwise you should sync the Bridge color settings for correct colormanagement.
In PS go to the menu edit / Color settings
Check if your settings are what you want and either read the name already given or save these settings under a proper name.
Then in Bridge use the same route (edit/Color Settings and check if the saved settings file is active in the list (Bridge tells you in this menu if the settings are synced or not so that should be easy to check.

Canon 5d Mark II and Raw Images in CS4

I have a Canon 5D Mark II and have just upgraded to standard CS4. When I go to view my Raw files on bridge I am unable to do this - all I see instaed of the thumbnail is the CR2 file. When I click on the file it states 'could not complete your request as it is not the correct type of document' - can you please advise how I can view these files?

The Canon 5D Mark II requires at least version 5.2 of the ACR plug-in. See http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407111.html
The CS4 default installed ACR 5.0 so you have to upgrade the plug-in.

Removing Photoshop Elements 9 caused missing lens profiles in Lightroom 3.3

After my trial on Photoshop Elements 9 expired I removed it from my Windows Vista system. The next time I started Lightroom 3.3 I tried to apply a Canon lens profile to some new images and the profile was missing, not only was it not on the list, none of the 862 images taken with this lens had the profile applyed to them anymore. I tried to repair the installation and it failed saying I was missing components. I then tried to upgrade to RC 3.4 & it failed with the same message. I finally thought it might have been caused by the removal of Photoshop Elements so I went to the restore point that it did prior to removal. Now I have the lens profile back that was missing the Canon EF28-135mm profile as well as to the other 862 images. My question is should there be anything else I should look for to see if it is missing or damaged? Thanks - Larry

The common part between LR and PSE is the Camera Raw part (ACR). It's settings are contained in 2 different locations:
1) General ACR configuration files:
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw
This directory contains lens and camera profiles installed with LR
2) User related configuration files:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw
This directory usually contains:
Downloaded/created lens profiles
ACR defaults (like ACR cache size, any defaults set in LR)
Downloaded/created camera profiles
You might want to check the content of those 2 locations. One other alternative would be to uninstall and re-install LR, which should take care of the factory supplied profiles.

How do PS CS3 Noise Reduction Filters compare with dedicated third-party plug-ins?

Am I missing something by not installing a dedicated Noise Reduction application into my PS CS3? Can Neat Image, Noise Ninja, Noiseware Pro, etc. do something that the PS CS3 Noise Filters can't do? Do these third-party aplications do it better?
Since I like flashless photography, and I generally carry with me small-sensor compacts when I travel, I'm frequently confronted with the problem of digital noise. I've always wondered how the third-party noise reduction applications perform in comparison with the Photoshop Noise Filters. I hope someone in this Forum has been able to acquire direct experience on this topic and will be kind enough to share this experience with us.

ACR 4.3 has better NR (noise reduction) than previous versions and can handle NR in most normal situations. However, available light photography with a small pixel sensor may require more NR and the specialized plugins such as Noise Ninja, NeatImage, and NoiseWare Pro can do a better job. I have all three and they do an excellent job, but I currently use NoiseWare most of the time.
Here is a demonstration of NoiseWare vs ACR NR, using 100% crops of an image taken with the Nikon D200, 1/320 sec at f/2.8. The image is reasonably sharp at normal viewing conditions, but has quite a lot of luminance noise. It was rendered with ACR and the settings were exposure +0.85, brightness +60. One thing you learn early in this type of shooting is to expose to the right to reduce noise, but this may conflict with stopping action and reducing camera shake. More exposure would have helped this image, and one should try to avoid exposures requiring this amount of positive exposure adjustment.
The results are shown below, followed by some discussion. Other comments are welcome. Color noise is not prominent in this image and I left color NR at its default.
ACR, No sharpening, no NR
ACR, Luminance NR 53, no sharpening
ACR, No NR, No sharpening, NoiseWare default, no sharpening
Noise reduction and sharpening are antagonistic processes. It is important that NR is applied before sharpening--you don't want to sharpen noise. Following NR there is an inevitable loss of detail, and some sharpening is necessary to restore the detail, but this also brings back the noise. One can use masks and blend if sliders in Photoshop in both NR and sharpening to mitigate some of these effects, and Bruce Fraser discusses the details in his excellent book on sharpening.
If you use an add on such as NoiseWare, you should turn off luminance sharpening in ACR. In doing so, you lose all those nifty sharpening features that have recently been added to ACR. I leave color NR at the default. It has a minimal effect on detail.
In adjusting the NR in ACR at 100% viewing, I estimated that a luminance setting of +53 was optimal. Beyond that, blotchy artifacts appear in the image.
For NoiseWarePro, I used the default settings with no sharpening. The NR effect is dramatic, but detail is lost and some sharpening is needed. This could be applied in NoiseWare or in Photoshop, perhaps with a plugin such as PhotoKit Sharpener. Personally, I have found that PK does not work well with this type of image because it bring back noise and produces artifacts.
In all of these examples, sharpening is needed following the NR. One could try to use surface masks to keep sharpening in Photoshop with the unsharp mask away from the edges. However, I find it is difficult to get a good surface mask, and I don't take the trouble.
For now, I use the sharpening built into NoiseWare. I don't know how it works internally, but it does have a slider for detail protection, and you can play with this to get the best result. It would be best to have the robust NR of the add ons built into ACR much like NoiseNinja is built into Bibble Pro. However, this is an ACR forum and I would expect that ACR is the preferred raw converter of those who frequent this forum.
After expending this much effort on the post, I hope to get some helpful feedback.

Images edited in proPhotoRGB now have wonky colors...

Somehow my default in ACR changed without me noticing from sRGB to proPhotoRGB and now the images from 2 of my sessions have really wonly colors when saved on my PC... I did some reasearch and I guess I was supposed to convert back to sRGB, except I had no idea this was going on so now I am in a real pickle. Does anyone know if there is a fix for this that does not involve re-editing a number of images? I am really hopin there is a way to resque these files!

OK... so my images were just saved as jpegs in full resolution. I was just getting ready to burn a CD of the session for the client and also post the images in an online gallery on my website. What happened is I created a pin on Pinterest with an image that was unrelated to the images from the session I am talking about and I noticed the colors were really dingy and completely off. That was my clue something was wrong. The I went bck to my session images and burged a couple on a CD and viewed them on a different computer using just the default windown viewer and they looked the same way. I had to research to find out what was wrong and finally realized that it was an issue of my settings in ACR. Somehow they had changed from sRGB to proPhotoRGB, which I don't typically use for editing. Since I wasn't aware this was happening I just saved the files as jpegs (full res) on my computer. I didn't do any resizing or anything else to them. And I still have some of the files saved with layers if that can be of any help. But I also have some that I wasn't planning on correcting in any way and those images I flattened and saved as jpegs ready for the client's CD.
I also tried opening one of the images back in Photoshop and chaning the profile back to sRGB, then saving it but it didn't make any difference.
I hope this gives some more insignt into what I did... please let me know if there is a piece of information you still need... I am desperately trying to avoid hours of re-editing!

Fujifilm RAF conversion to Adobe DNG images become "square pixel"? Any Idea?

I'am using Adobe DNG 8.3.0 on MacOS 10.6.8 to convert fujifilm XE2 RAF file to DNG, thus i can keep my RAW file and edit in LR, but the converted images show very obvious "square pixel"? what wrong? or the Adobe DNG not fully support Fujifilm latest RAF file yet?

Somewhere in the LR 4 series Adobe changed/improved how RAFs are converted. I think you’re using a really old LR without having set your DNG Compatibility options to old enough—something older than the default of ACR 7.1.
The pattern you’re seeing is from the old LR that expects the DNG Converter to have filled in all the extra pixels whereas the DNG Converter is using a new compatibility mode that tells it that LR can handle filling in the pixels itself.
