WCS 5.2.130 Access Point Up/Down Percentage report.

I am trying to generate a management report to give me the AP disassociation/association statistics as a pecentage per group or floor map from our WCS. Is anyway of doing this as I find that the in built repoting templates do not allow for this. When we use a Airwave MS we are able to get this information OK. Any help here would be appreciated!

Hi Mary,
Thanks for your reply! When I look at the WCS V5.2 Configuration guide URL you posted. It shows me a menu option which does not appear on my WCS under the Reports> Client Reports> as shown in the document. We are running Ver 5.2.130.0 so why can't we see some of the reports?
I have attached a screen dump of My WCS page, which shows no client association menu option listed under Reports.

  • Alert notification for down light weight access point?

Hello! Is there a way to get a notification when a lightweight access point goes down? I recently introduced WiSM in my wireless LAN and keeping track of the access point status is a challenge.
    Thanks in advance!

Good to know, I have that and just didn't see a need to install it yet since I have only two controllers. I thought still manageable. Anyway, if it will give me the notification then I will put in production ASAP.
Thank you so much for all the reponses. :)

  • Can interference cause an access point to reboot?

I recently configured our WCS to send email notifications.  Monitor > Alarms > Email Notification
I now receive emails from WCS stating that some access points dissassociate from the controller, and then another email stating they are back again.  Not the same APs, not all at the same time, etc.  We have 1200+ access points.  A very small percentage... maybe one or two per day decide to leave the controller and then come back.
Looking at the controller, I see this is a true statement.  I see that the access point's uptime is equivalent to the time is left the controller and came back again.
My question is... does anyone else have this configured, and if so, what was causing the access points to disassociate?  I cannot tell if the access point is actually rebooting or simply wandering away from home.
Is there a way to see what caused the AP to leave and come back again?  With nobody in the building at 7pm, I don't think it was human intervention.  Other access points on the same switch, and they don't wander.  I do wonder if interference or something else can cause an access point to reload.
    The APs are AIR-LAP1210 on a 5508 running 7.0.98.0
Are there any known bugs that you are aware of?
    Thanks in advance!

You are in luck. Like you we have 4500 radios and we turned on alerts and we got slammed on this as well. I will share with you some of the things that contriubuted to our problem. It just wasnt one issue...
    1) We had 200 APs configured as a primary to 1 WLC. Well that WLC could only take 150. So when one AP jumped off there were 50 other aps interested in getting on. And when this happened we got an alert. We only fill 125 per wism today. This cut down on a good portion of our alerts
    2) We disbaled ap fall back. Once the aps were where we wanted them we killde ap fall back. (no more bouceing around).
    3) We had a few aps with link problems. Not many but a few. These aps would lose data connection but still keep power and not reboot. We either had to replace the patch cable or do a new run.
Take a few and investigate them. You will start to develop your own pattern.

I restarted the Access Point and will see what happens. Our Access Point and WLC are in the Same VLAN.

  • Access points dropping up and down

I have anywhere from 5-20 access points drop up and down throughout the day out of a total of around 200. I am currently trying to go through and figure out why we our access points are having some many issues and how I might be able to resolve them.
One of the logs that I commonly see is:
AP 'exp-p13', interface '802.11a' on Controller '10.2.192.25'. Channel changed to '44' from '60' due to 'None'. Interference Energy before update is '0' and after update is '0'. Noise before update is '0' and after update is '0'. Interference before update is '0' and after update is '0'.
Is there anyway to determine what the cause of this is?
    Controller Firmware: 4.2.130.0.
    AP Model AIR-LAP1242AG-A-K9
    IOS Version 12.4(10b)JA4

If you have time sensitive app's then YES. If you have only data use and you see re-associations... also YES. I would either follow the site survey doc for channel or I would let RRM do it's thing for a couple days and get a baseline. I would then look at the power and channel to see how often it changes or not for a couple days. If I think it does change too frequently, I will set it to on demand or off. Usually if there is voice, I will set the power to 25mW and let RRM figure the channel before I disable the feature. Verify with the site survey, usually they will have the ap set to a recommended power setting when they did the site survey.
If you set it to on demand or turn the feature off, do check the channels the wlc set the ap's too.... might not be the best choice :)

  • WCS Access Point information

I am starting to setup my maps in WCS and have an issue with the way the information is displayed.  Currently I have some locations that have several AP's close to each other due to the walls between the spaces. The AP's where installed by someone else and they are all in a line, so when I view a map the information from one AP overlaps the information of another AP.  Is there a way to rotate these information tags so they may rotated 45 or 90 degrees instead of everything being to the right of the AP?  Right now the only way to see it is if i zoom in, but then I can't see other parts of a floor at once

You can restart the access point by one of the following mehtods
    1. Remove the power and replug the power cable
    2. Using the CLI in the ap prompt type boot command. i.e [ap:boot]
    3. In the Web interface use the System Configuration Setup page to restart the access point. Click Warm Restart System Now to perform a warm restart of the access point. A warm restart reboots the access point. Click Cold Restart System Now to perform a cold restart of the access point. A cold restart is the equivalent of removing and then reapplying power for the access point.

  • Searching for Access Point Report by SSID on the WCS

    Hello,
im searching for an option to make a Report on the WCS (Software Version 6.0.170.0 )  to see all SSIDs that are ratiated in detail by the Access Points.
I mean something like this: (example)
    AP 1   -  SSID 1 and SSID 2
    AP2   -   SSID 1
    AP3   -   SSID 3 and SSID2
Or is they any other alternativ to see that on the WCS or WLC?
    Thank You

    Hi,
The "AP SUMMARY" report will provide you the AP group to which the AP is mapped to.. here by we can come to know what all WLANs are getting broadcasted by the AP..
REPORTS LAUNCH PAD >> DEVICES >> AP SUMMARY >> NEW.
Lemme know if this answered ur question and please dont forget to rate the suefull posts!!

  • WCS displays Access Point as disassociated but WLC shows as associated

    Hi all,
I have a WCS ver 7.0.172, a 5508 WLAN Controller with ver 7.0.116.0. At this WLC 21 Access Points (AIR-LAP1131AG-E-K9 ) were associated. As well I have one CleanAir Access Point (AIR-CAP3502E-E-K9) is associated.
    And now ... my problem:
every time the WCS got a critical error and reports that the AP is disassociated from Controller. But if I take a look to the WLC the AP is associated and works at local mode and have two clients associated.
I cleared the alarm - a few minutes later the alarm will be reported again. Same result if I delete the alarm.
Could anybody give support for that issue.
    Thanks and regards
    Holger

    Hi Holgerseiler,
Have you got any information/solution on this issue?
I also have same kind of issue. I have a WCS with version 7.0.172.0, and around 25 WLCs (version7.0.116.0, in which i checked) and totally around 1000 APs are assiociated in wireless network.
Some error messages are coming on my WCS device like
    "AP disassociated from Controller [ip]"
Here AP name and WLC ip address will change randomly, but there is no impact on my network.
    Thanks in advance

  • WCS Access Point Reboot versus Cold Boot

I'm aware of the process an LWAP AP goes through when a cold boot is performed, specifically dealing with 1130 access points. I've noticed that when using the reboot command in WCS, the process is much shorter than a cold boot (unplugging the AP from power and network and then plugging everything back in).
So the question is - what is the difference between the reboot command in WCS and performing a cold boot? Does the AP retain some information during a reboot and therefore not require as much time to boot up?
    Thanks for any help...

You can restart the access point by one of the following mehtods
    1. Remove the power and replug the power cable

  • Cisco autonomous access points and WCS

Hi, I'm trying to add my autonomous access points to WCS which I have done but I'm not getting any performance data or errors etc.
Does anyone know if WCS support autonomous access points or do I have to use WLSE to get this info
    Thanks

Greetings the WLSE will be needed to manage autonomous access points. The WCS application is geared towards LWAPP and Controller based implementations.

  • Shuting down an lightweight access point

We setup an access point at a remote location as a test.  We would now like to remotely shut it down.  Is there a way of shutting down an access point (lightweight) remotely to free up its AP license off of our controller?
    I appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks

    Hi,
1 - If you have remote access to local switch to whom your access-point (POE) is connected, just shutdown that port, by this way you can power-off the access-point.
2 - As far as AP license off is concern
If you have licensed DTLS image on your controller then AP license off of controller can be achieve by disabling the DTLS of the specific AP by controller.
you can enable or disable DTLS data encryption for a specific access point or for all access points using the config ap link-encryption {enable | disable} {Cisco_AP | all} command

    Dear All,
I have WCS and WLC with 90 LWAP Access Points. I have integrated WCS and WLC and i am able to see all the LWAP in WCS GUI.
The requirement is, when ever some LWAPs are down, i want get an alert in some way to notify this. Now without knowing how to do this, i just seeing the total quantity and if some LWAP is off, i find difficult to find which one is down.
Can you please suggest me the suitable method to get the solution
    RBK

    hello rbk,
for simplicity, u can try changing the names of the ap to their specific locations. plot the ap's to the map. once they're offline you'll see right away which ap's are down and where they are located, first by ap names and then by their current location.
this is best done before fixing the each ap. but still doable if the ap's are already fixed. you'll have more work, though.
have ur floor plan ready with the exact ap locations. write down the mac address as you fix the ap's. once the ap registers to the controller you can match it with the floor plan and change the name of the ap with its exact location. example Bldg1-GF-AP01-Lobby, Bldg1-GF-AP02-Lobby, Bldg1-1F-AP01-Reception... etc...
import the map to the WCS and assign the ap's accordngly.
you will know exactly which ap's are off and where they are exactly.
    hope this helps!!!

  • 3502 access point keeps disassociating

We have 5508 controllers on 7.0.230.0 code. We mostly have 3502 clean air access points. We have been having issues with certain AP's disassociating. You can go on the switch and reset the port and it will come right back online. Sometimes it will stay up for 5 hours some times just for 1 or less. The port it is on has no issues and I kept a monitor on the switch just to see if anything in particular was happening and saw nothing going on that would cause the AP to go down.
Apart from the AP being bad. Is there any kind of troublshooting I can do to see what could possibly be causing this. We also have WCS and the in the event log for these AP's it just has them as dissassociating and the reason being none.

    Awesome.
Thanks for all of the responses.
    Leolaohoo,
Here is my output. I am assumming this command is essentially the same as using a cable tester? If it is
    F-1-C3750#test cable-diagnostics tdr int g2/0/7
TDR test started on interface Gi2/0/7
A TDR test can take a few seconds to run on an interface
Use 'show cable-diagnostics tdr' to read the TDR results.
    F-1-C3750#sh cable-diagnostics tdr int g2/0/7
TDR test last run on: May 24 08:38:50
Interface Speed Local pair Pair length        Remote pair Pair status
    Gi2/0/7   1000M Pair A     N/A                N/A         Not Completed
                    Pair B     N/A                N/A         Not Completed
                    Pair C     N/A                N/A         Not Completed
                    Pair D     N/A                N/A         Not Completed
    F-1-C3750#sh cable-diagnostics tdr int g2/0/7
It doesnt appear to be testing too well. I ran the show command quite a few times and still got these same results. I did have to do a shut/no shut on the port to get the AP up and going. So when I ran the test the port was in a up/up status.
If we end up having to RMA that I guess that is what we will do. BUT, if there is any other way for a fix I would love to hear about it. We have a couple hundred of these, only about 10 ap's are experiencing this issue. But they are hanging in the ceiling and not easily accessible.

  • Problems probing for rogue access points

    Hello,
I have a situation where I am trying to locate a rogue AP in one of my office buildings. When I bring a laptop over there with NetStumbler or Inssider, I get no response from any access points or clients. Its like that throughout the entire building. However when I leave the building, the AP start to come up but I cant get near them.
I have another build that we have as well and the probing works just fine. Would there be a controller template or access point template that would be causing this problem?
Here is what I am running:
Cisco 4400 controller with firmware 4.2.130.0
Cisco 4400 controller with firmware 5.0.148.0
    Cisco WCS 5.1.64.0
The access points that are connected to the controller with a firmware of 4.2.130.0 is the one that seems to be stopping my attempts with probing. So far my searching for causes has not turned up anything=(
Any help would be greatly appreciative.

What are you seeing in the logs? Are the two controllers being used as primary and secondary? You should keep the code the same, just in case ap's move to the other controller?
When you see a rouge ap, it will also state which ap's are hearing that rouge ap and the signal strength. If you see it -86db or worse, then it is outside of your building most likely.
