WCS monitoring

I have recently started using the Wireless Control System. This is monitoring the WiSM2 controller, and 1524 AP, 1040 indoor AP,s. I wanted to know if I can monitor the Traffic- Bandwidth Utilization, Number of Clients, Session details, Type of device etc on  per AP level, per SSID level, per controller level.   I also want to know if i can generate reports Traffic- Bandwidth Utilization, Number of Clients, Session details, Type of device etc on  per AP level, per SSID level. I also want to know how can I findi the license of the WCS if any. And how can I take a backup of current WCS configuration if I decide to reinstall the WCS into any other server?

WCS is EOL and what you need to look at is Prime Infrastructure. Now I'm not going to tell you everything PI can do or can't, but this is a tool for monitoring the wireless. It can give tell you number of clients on a given ap or radio or the utilization, but it will not know of bandwidth per user or total bandwidth used. This is not something that this tool is built for.

The WLC with newer code can do NetFlow which is application visibility.

I don't think there is one solution for what you are looking for. I guess you can always find a tool to check bandwidth from the switchport that the ap is connected to. Something like Cacti

  • No client notifications on WCS

We have two WLC'2 4402(sw 5.2.193.0) and one WCS with sw 5.2.148.0. I have a lot of client warnings in the controllers trap logs but none clients alarms on my WCS. Is there any reason why the WCS does not reports client problems ?

Use Administration > Logging to access the Administer Logging Options page. This logging function is only related to WCS logging and not syslog information. The logging for controller syslog information can be done on the Controller > Management > Syslog page.
Email Notification can be done with WCS. WCS includes a built-in email notification function that can notify network operators when critical alarms occur. Refer to the WCS Monitor > All Alarms > Email Notification page to view the current alarm notification settings.
    Use Monitor/Alarms.
From a command drop-down list, choose Email Notification.
Click GO to access this page.
This page allows you to view the alarm categories with the critical-alarm email notification enabled and disabled, the current From and To email addresses, and the current SMTP server. This page also allows you to enable and disable email notification (check box checked = email notification ON; check box unchecked = email notification OFF) for any or all of the alarm categories, and it allows you to access an alarm category email notification setup page.
For every category except Coverage Holes, the alarm severity must be critical to trigger the email. Email notification is available only for alarms, not for events.
Note: If you do not receive emails from WCS, check whether port 25 is blocked.
Note: A WCS administrator currently has no control over which events generate alarms, when they time out, or the degree of their severity. On the controller, individual types of events can be enabled or disabled (such as management, SNMP, trap controls, etc.).

  • How to send WCS alert?

    Hi forum,
How do i configure the WCS to send alert to syslog server or send via emails?

  • Cisco WCS integration with SNMP based monitoring

I am looking for a solution to integrate Cisco WCS with any SNMP based monitoring solution.  My requirement is below,
    - Alerts for Access points up/down should be picked up by an alerting system in its console through SNMP.
    - I dont want all access points to be monitored, but only a critical group.
Currently all access points are configured on LWAP mode under a wireless controller.  Can i configure APs individually for SNMP and get it monitored through the 3rd party monitoring tool.
Can anyone please guide me to find a solution for this.

  • WCS Lobby Ambassador and Monitor User

I'm running our WCS authentication through ACS with TACACS and it's working fine.  However, I currently have my Help Desk setup with a monitor user so they can login and view WCS, but this does not give them the Lobby Ambassador of course.  How can I get a user to have both WCS and Lobby access with having to login with seperate user identities?

It's either admin either lobby account, you can not have both, the http pages are completly different and dont intermix.
Your solution is to have 2 users on your TACACS where one is the admin and one the lobby.
Here are the step by step config lines:

  • Cisco WCS + 5508 - Monitor view vendor name

Just finishing up a small install of a 5508 controller and WCS.
    Approx 30 AP's across 2 buildings
2 WLANS - 1 prod wpa2 and 1 guest which is completely open to internet only.
Our security group is asking if there is a way to determine who is accessing the Prod WLAN. Currently it is setup
to work with eap and the users AD account which is working well.
I noticed under the client tab in WCS that there is a Vendor name and it shows me intel and even RIM when someone with their Blackberry is
connected. BUT when we connect via an IPAD it show "unknown" as vendor name. Is there a way to get the IPAD to register under the vendor name ?
    Running 7.0.172.0 of WCS
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Dave

I don't have your answer so I'm curious as well, but the vendor name is derived from the OUI - first six characters of MAC address. If the file that maps OUI to vendors was updated it would probably say "Apple" which would include all i-things and wireless macs.
    Here's a site to lookup OUIs: http://hwaddress.com
I have set up an account in WCS for the security group, and made them members of "System Monitoring" group. They can create and schedule user reports but can't change any settings.

  • WCS won't start/run - Health Monitor is already running

I am posting here my frustrations with running WCS in a Virtual Machine (VMWare) and just wanted to let everyone know what my issue was and what fixed it. WCS will complain when the memory is below 2.0 GB at the time of installation, but does not stipulate that this will cause it to not work, only that performance will be affected. Until my server arrives, I am forced to run WCS in a VM on a Windows XP desktop that has 3 GB of RAM. Not wanting to suck up too much RAM for the VM due to the fact that the workstation is used for other applications, I selected 1.0 GB of RAM. WCS installed and started the services fine. I pulled up the login page locally just to be sure. When I came back to work today, it was down. The wcs-0-0.log indicated everything was fine, but the apache_error.log showed this:
    [Thu Apr 23 18:46:45 2009] [notice] Child 4064: Listening on port 443.
    [Thu Apr 23 18:46:45 2009] [notice] Child 4064: Listening on port 80.
[Thu Apr 23 18:48:17 2009] [notice] Parent: Received shutdown signal -- Shutting down the server.
[Thu Apr 23 18:48:17 2009] [notice] Child 4064: Exit event signaled. Child process is ending.
So you can see that it shut down after a couple of minutes. When I ran the WCSStatus link, it showed only that "Health monitor is already running." - that's all. So with that non-specific error, I was left to continue the struggle on my own. No current posts in the NetPro forum describe my issue, although bug CSCsx34113 was close:
Windows logout causes Apache process and WCS JVM to exit
    Symptom:
When a user log outs of the physical console of a Win2K3 server, the Apache process and the WCS JVM exit.
    Conditions:
This only affects Win2K3 servers, and only happens when logging out of the physical console. Logging out of a Remote Desktop does not cause the processes to exit
    Workaround:
Do not log out of the physical console, if you must use it.
    Use Remote Desktop.
    Further Problem Description:
    None
I decided to bump the RAM to 2.0 GB on the VM anyways, and restart the VM. BINGO! WCS is up and operational. Hope this helps...
    Regards,
    Scott

Hey all, I have also experienced issues with services shutting down when logging out of WCS on a Remote Desktop session to the WCS server. I have experienced this with every version of WCS I have installed from 4.2 up to 5.2.x. If I were to launch WCS in a browser on the server everything was fine until I closed the browser (a logout probaby does the same thing). I always used to check my upgrades to make sure everything worked ok and then when I logged off I couldn't run WCS remotely and would eventually have to restart the WCS server to resolve the issue.
With the 6.0.132.0 code I just made sure NOT to launch WCS in a browser on the server. I performed my check remotely and avoided the whole issue.
For grins I just tested this by launching a browser on the WCS server and signing in and out of the application. It continued to run (never did in previous versions). It looks like perhaps this may have been resolved (at least for me) in the 6.0.132.0 WCS code.

  • WCS 7.0 - Monitor Clients displaying wrong info

    Hi,
I've been having some problems with the Monitor Clients menu on a WCS 7.0 server, for instance if I go there and display the detected clients on the last 24 hours I get a different set of clients than if I go and generate a report of unique clients for the last day on the report menu. Is this normal?, shouldn't both reports get the data from the same place and give the same result?. Thanks and resgards,
    Gabriel.

Sure, here a couple of screenshots of what's being displayed.
that's the output of monitor->clients->clients detected in last 24 hours. As you see there are 2 clients d0:b9 and 87:5b, now if I run a report on unique client for the last day I get:
This shows two different clients 65:86 and 08:8a. I've also seen other errors on Monitor Clients for instance if I look for associated clients and have two clients associated sometimes it shows only one or none at all. Hope that clarified my question. Thanks and regards,
    Gabriel.

  • WCS in monitor maps, any way to see SSID that AP is broadcasting

    Hello,
In Cisco WCS (7.0.230.0), does anyone know if there is any way to show what SSIDs an LWAPP is broadcasting? I can see the SSIDs assigned to the group that the AP is a part of through the controller or templates, but is there an easy way to see what SSID an LWAPP is broadcasting maybe using the MONITOR > MAP or anything?
Maybe there is an easier way than using WCS?
    Thank you for your time,
    Steve

    Steve,
Thank you for your reply on this matter.
What I'm hoping to find is a way after you assign an AP group name to an access point, so it knows what SSIDs to broadcast, is there a way while looking at the map of APs in WCS for a floor to show that the AP is actually broadcasting the SSIDs specified in the group without physically being at the location or do you just trust the Controller and the group that you assign that the AP is indeed broadcasting the SSIDs?
    Thank you again,
    Steve

  • WCS Navigator - NCS Monitoring?

  • Simple Question about 'Monitor Clients' on WCS

    Hello
When I use WCS and go the 'Clients' tab on the Home page and then click 'Associated Clients' it shows me a whole list of usernames/MAC adresses/ip addresses/ etc.
One of these column titles is 'Protocol'.
On some of my entries there is an AP with a MAC of 00:00:00:00:00:00 (which I know is a cosmetic bug that is not resolved by Cisco) but its 'Protocol' state is show as 'Mobile' rather than 802.11b or 802.11g.
Does anyone know why the 'Protocol' is classed as Mobile? What does it mean, if anything?
    thanks
    Bryn

Hi I read your post. I see the "mobile" status of clients on my network when they are being forwarded from another wireless controller via a mobility group. I use this feature for our guest network. Do you have any of your WLC's in the same mobility group or any kind of guest network?

  • How to monitor traffic and associations per AP with WCS?

    Hi,
is there a way to get traffic and client access/associations data with WCS for each AP of a centrally managed WLAN?
    I manage a campus WLAN with a 4402 WLC (software version 6.0.188.0) and a WCS version 6.0.170.0 .
WCS provides me detailed information on a client basis: I'm able to know the association history of each client currently
connected, both which AP the client has connected to, and how much traffic the client has generated/received for each connection.
I hadn't find a way to get the same information on an AP basis. Namely, which clients have been connected, and how much traffic
has been transmitted per time slot.
I suppose this is just a matter of making a different query to the WCS database, since the data are the same used for providing
the information on the client association and traffic history. Though, I haven't find a way on WCS to get this information.
Thanks a lot in advance for any help, cheers,
    Piero

Use the client reports from WCS reporting:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/wcs/6.0/configuration/guide/6_0reps.html#wp1134645
The Client Summary report contains four sub reports. Each of them can be  independently customized. The following information is default  information available from a Client Summary report depending on the  customizable report selected:
    •Number of Sessions
    •Number of Total Users
    •Number of Unique Users
    •Number of New Users
    •Number of Unique APs
    •Number of Users per AP
    •Total Traffic (MB)
•Average Traffic per Session (KB) and per user (in KB)
    •Total Throughput (Mbps)
•Average Throughput per Session and per user (Mbps)
    •Protocol—802.11a/n or 802.11b/g/n.

PS: I do realize this is not a Cisco supported OS, but I would like to try it before falling back to RHEL

Editing /etc/redhat-release should allow WCS to start.  I run ours on CentOS 5 and I had to make this change.
Just comment out the CentOS line and add the Red Hat line below.  You will probably need to be root to do this and
it may require a restart.  Also after running updates for CentOS I have notice that the file usually changes back
and WCS does not start again.  I keep a copy of the file on the server desktop and copy it over after the updates.
I have not notice any issue with running it on CentOS, just thought I would throw that out there.
    Cheers!

  • MSE location problem in WCS map

    Hi,
I've Installed a MSE context aware services   6.0.103 and WCS  6.0.196.0 plus loaction license in a Campus with 4 WLC  in 2 buildings, every buildings has 3 floor, i configure the WCS and associate the campus to MSE engine, I syncronize it with controllers and  It works, but only for the ground floor of the buildings, on the other floor there are many clients but they are not visible on WCS map, I can view associated clients only on the groundfloor maps, and  i check the properties of every floor but they are the same.
    any ideas?
    thanks
    Regards

    Hello,
Are the groundfloors all covered by APs on the same controller(s) and maybe the other floors covered by APs on different controllers?
Or are the same controllers having APs on either the groundfloor and other floors?
I am asking this because we may be running into a situation where the MSE doesn't correctly communicate with the controllers managing APs (and clients) on the floors where you can't see anything.
Also, is the MSE license having still free slots, or is the license limit completely consumed by all the clients in the groundfloors?
This can be verified in WCS under
Services > Mobility Services > [your MSE] > Context Aware Service > Administration> Tracking Parameters
After these first checks, I'd also verify the following:
    1. The client on a specific floor should show up on the WLC under
    show client detail
    2. The same client should show up on WCS through a search for its MAC address.
Is the WCS pointing you to a specific map location for this client?
    3. In WCS, under Monitor > Maps, do you see a client count higher than zero for those floors where you can't display clients?
    4. In the floor map view of WCS, could you please confirm that you checked the "Clients" box and that in its properties you also selected "Show All Clients"?
I understand these may sound like obvious steps, but I'd prefer not to neglect anything.
    Regards,
    Fede
