WD 250gig laptop HD

Hello all,
For some reason my old user info was not working so I had to create a new account.
I just picked up one of the new Western Digital 250gig notebook drives that many retailers are selling as compatible with the G3 powerbooks (including even the wallstreet and lombard). When installed into my Pismo (10.4.11/1gig ram/formerly 80gig HD)only 127 gigs show up. I tried putting it into my external case and plugging it in via firewire and it all shows up. I tried partitioning it into two OSX drives and one OS9 drive(120/105/20). It all shows up fine as an external via firewire, but as soon as I install it back into the pismo only the first (125gig) partition shows up. The other OSX partition, as well as the OS9 are gone.
Partitioning the old 80gig into 10 and 9 were no problem whatsoever, so I am assuming 125 (127)is the upper limit the Pismo can recognize.
So all this makes me wonder how every "Mac" company out there can sell these in good faith as "compatible with powerbook G3".
I also wonder if there is a firmware update I am not finding or some 3rd party patch to over come this obstacle. I can use it as an external and just buy another 120gig, but it shure would be nice to have the 250 in the Pismo. I have several newer laptops as well as a couple of desktops but I still use my trusty Pismo 90% of the time. I love this machine and will take it to the grave. I just don't use it for heavy video applications.
I wonder if anybody has tried one of these new drives and made it work? If you have please give me a holler.
Many Thanks,

Now if I can just get my hands on one those old 900mghz powerlogix upgades...

Cornelius,
You seem be all over this forum and very helpful to others. I just wanted to say thank you for that.
The WD 250 worked flawlessly with the Speedtools kit posted above. I had already partitioned the drive into 3 sectors using a firewire enclosure and Carboncopy with my G4 desktop. So all I had to do was run the Speedtools installation software, reboot and it was all there (when I posted the question I had installed the drive and only the first showed up). The first 128 is my primary boot, I also have a 20gig OS9 partition for the few older apps. that I just can't (on a rare occasion) live without and the rest as a secondary OSX with all unnecessary software items removed as a dump for music, photos, et al.
As I went from 12gb-30-80 and I was still running out of space I am happy to have the extra room.
When comes to the new computers (like my girlfriend's G4 17")they just leave me cold (literally, my GF never uses it as it makes her hands freeze as well as mine). I will always continue to refurbish/upgrade the old Pismo. So far I have replaced the DVD drive with one that does it all (well, not blue ray...)when the old one died and a 4 hour battery when the original finally got down to 20 minutes. I also just replaced my old "red at startup" LCD screen as well as the AC/soundcard when I first got it years ago to get it running in the first place.
My next point of adventure is I have found an old Powerlogix G3 900mhz that may have a bad cache to play with. I think that will be last item for this machine but my eye is always on ebay for a spare.
So in a nutshell, the larger hardrives work perfectly well.
I will mark this answered.

  • Laptop Dual Drive configuration with SSD

I would like to get an opinion on what configuration would give me the best performance on my laptop.
I have a Dell Studio 17.  It has two drive bays.  Quad core processor, and 8 gig of ram.
I am going to re-install the OS (Win 7 Ultimate).
I will have two hard drives.  One, a 250gig Kingston Solid State Drive.  Two, a Seagate 750gig 7200rpm w/16meg cache.
I am thinking of using the 250gig for the OS, and 750 for data.
So here is my question, would I install CS5 on the C (solid state) drive since it is faster?  and where would the best place to put media and scratch files be?
I can put it all on C being that it is a solid state drive and much faster, but then I am only using one drive controller.  Or, should I split it up and utilize both drive controllers.  Of course, I suppose that Dell only used one drive controller for both drives in which it's a mute point.  But I don't know this for sure.
Anyway, open to any opinions.  Including installing the OS on  the larger slower drive, maybe using some partitions, leaving the 250 gig Solid State as the CS5 drive.
    Thanks

I did some benchmarks using PerformanceTest 7.0
What is interesting to me is that I had partitioned my 2nd drive to put my CS5 projects on.  Scratch is on C.
The B drive, and D drive is the same drive, just two different partitions.  I don't know why, but the B partision is slower than the D partition.
B is 112gig with 50gig free, and D is 340gig with 65gig free.  But being the same physical drive, I would think they would have the same performance.
Anyway, also included in the benchmark is drive M, which is my external drive connected both as a USB drive, and an ESATA drive.
The ESATA benchmark is pretty good, beating the B drive in all tests, and close to the D drive.
Of course the SSD drive beats them all in all tests.
Can't wait for these to come in a terabyte at affordable prices.  !!

  • Upgrading laptop hard drive to solid state drive. (i am a noob)

So my laptop (HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC) was running slowly for around 6 months, i had enough so i went to the store and upgraded my ram from 4 gb to 8 gb thinking this would fix the problem but the guy told me that my hard drive was slow because it is dting, we talked about what i can do to fix the problem and he said that i should get a new hard drive, he told me that i should get a solid state drive as it fails dramatically less than a regular hard drive and is much faster. I just wanted to know what kind of hard drive i should get, as i dont want to buy an incompatible hard drive. Also if anyone could reference me to some good online stores that would be awesome, thanks for your time.

Yes the 500 will work fine. Just go to the second link in my post above, for the 250gig Samsung 840 Evo, and over to the right are links to get the 500 gig version and even the 750 and 1 TB. See the little gray boxes? The 500 gig is about $315.

  • Can I return my laptop

I bought my laptop around the beginning of March 2011. I am very dissatisfied with it and was wondering if I could bring it in for a refund. The computer is a Dell Inspiron.

I'm sorry, but you only have 14 days to return a laptop. You could send it in for repair if there is an issue with the device.

  • WRT120N no longer recognized by laptops

I'm not quite sure where the problem lies, so I'm going to go over everything that happened so I can hopefully get an answer. Any help is MUCH appreciated.
We were running a few laptops (Acer Aspire 5517 on Vista) off our WRT120N router wirelessly. We have it hooked up to a wireless modem. All signs show that the modem and router are running fine. The wireless network we were using, I'll call it Network-1, stopped showing up as an option in the wireless connect menu. Prior to this all the laptops could connect to Network-1 by wire or wirelessly without a problem. I don't know what happened to start the problem, but Network-1 is no longer a wireless network option.
When I wire a laptop to the router, it connects to the internet and says it's currently connected to Network-1. But when I try to connect the wireless network via a wired connection, the new network I set doesn't show up in the connection menu. When I try to set up the router again (while the computer is wired), I get the error message "Windows did not detect any wireless network hardware". So it seems that although I am able to get an internet connection through the router, the computer is not recognizing it.
One of the laptops is able to connect wirelessly through a different network (Network-2). It looks like Network-2 was set up automatically by the laptop. Another laptop has Network-2 as an option, but it says the network security key is wrong. I have no idea what the password might be, the computer where Network-2 works connects automatically, I haven't had to type a password. I'm not sure what happened here, if it's two different connections with the same name, or if it's the same thing. I don't even know if this is relevant.
Again, we would be SO grateful for any help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well i think due to some reason the wireless settings of your Router must have got resetted, that's the reason you are unable to see your wireless network name. So you need to Hardwired you computer to the Router and login to the router setup page and change the wireless settings of your Router.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

We don't know what Apple plans on doing to change this (and it may not be just Apple but more likely the publishers, since Apple would, of course, do whatever it could to maximize sales/profits).  Right now you can only read Apple books on mobile devices. Sure, buy them from Amazon if you want to read them on the computer. We don't work for Apple so we're pretty impartial on this kind of advice.
You might also see what your library can offer.  My wife can browse the county library from her iPhone, borrow e-versions, and read books on it too.  Free!

  • Email address change--how does this affect laptop and nook?

I use my Adobe ID only to authorize my laptop and Nook.  I need to change my email address which seems easy on the FAQs, but how do I then reauthorize my laptop and Nook?  And, if I do this, are all my existing library books unreadable since they were downloaded by what the Nook thinks is a different user?  I'm almost sure I won't be able to return any books in ADE on my laptop, but I can live with that if I can still read the books on the Nook.
    Thanks in advance.

The sync process with iTunes transfers the email account settings (for your chosen accounts via your iPhone sync preferences) from the Mail application on your Mac to the iPhone's email application.
The iPhone is running OS X and the iPhone's email client can be considered a mobile version of the Mail application.

  • Creating a backup of functional drive removed from broken laptop

I have a new Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion that is damaged and won't turn on. I have the drive removed and can access it using a docking station attached to my iMac running 10.6.
What is the simplest way to backup the data from this drive so that after the laptop is repaired I can return my data to the Macbook Pro?

Using Disk Utility to clone a drive will automatically erase the Destination drive if it isn't already erased. To backup to a drive with stuff already on it you would need to use a backup utility like one of these:
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Be sure the backup utility is NOT configured to erase all files on the destination that are not on the source. If there are files identical to those already on the drive, then they will be overwritten.

  • How to take mailboxes from desktop drive to laptop and back?

I want to copy my e-mail messages (in their user-created mailboxes) from my main G5 to my laptop so I can review them elsewhere, then return them to the G5. I thought I could just copy the Mailboxes folder (or maybe the whole massive Mail folder), place that the corresponding folder in my laptop user Library, then do the same when I get home -- replace the older mailboxes folder with a revised version.
But when I do so, I get a mailbox in the laptop's Mail, but no messages in it.
What am I doing wrong? This should be an easy task, I would think.
Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   MacBook Pro

Which recommendation? Did you actually read what I said at the bottom of the post you’ve quoted? And why have you quoted the entire post?
The file format used by Mail changed drastically in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Mail 2.x knows about the old data format and can import mailboxes created by Mail 1.x, but Mail 1.x knows nothing about the new data format used by Mail 2.x. Actually, the conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x mailboxes is broken and Mail 2.x sometimes can only import Mail 1.x mailboxes as Other, but that’s another story...
Although *.mbox packages appear to be files in Mac OS X 10.3, they’re actually folders just like in Mac OS X 10.4, but Mac OS X 10.3 treats them differently because of the .mbox suffix. Ctrl-click on an *.mbox package and choose Show Package Contents from the contextual menu to see the files it contains.
For each mailbox, Mail 1.x stores all the messages in a single file in standard mbox format (the mbox file within the *.mbox folder/package), whereas Mail 2.x stores messages in individual *.emlx files within a Messages folder that Mail 1.x knows nothing about.
You need something like emlx to mbox Converter or Emailchemy to convert the *.emlx files to standard mbox format in order to be able to import them (as Other / Standard mbox) in Mail 1.x.

  • Can I return my new laptop to lenovo because of its quality problem?

IBM is one of the best brand as I know, especially showing us not only high quality of products but the service.
But now one thing happened to me, if I don't have this case I can't believe. I found there is something with the laptop(T61 Model 7658CTO) the same day when I got the new laptop on June 3rd, 2008. Then I call 800, a lot of 800 calls,at last I were told that I should contact send it back first if I were to get another new one. Three days later I got the box sent by Lenovo, and I return it back in terms of what the paper shown.
Unfortunately the problems of the laptop still exist when I turn on my laptop after it repaired. What's wrong with my laptop, this is new one, I think IBM should provide high quality products.
I don't know how to describe the weird sound , it sounds like two or more micphone opened clost to each other. It is very harsh.
I want to get one new laptop from Lenovo because of the quality of product and customer service or can I return the laptop?
I would appreciate any advice you can give me.

Like Obama says... yes you can
I did it last week because I bought an iPhone 4 as a wedding gift but then I changed my mind and wanted an iPad, so the bride could use it together with the groom (while the phone is personal).
I returned the iPhone to the apple store and I paid the difference to buy the 32GB iPad, no problems
I didn't opened the case, but the guy at the apple store told me I could have returned the phone even if it was opened. It must be undamaged tough.

  • I tried to sync some new songs bought from iTunes into my ipod using my laptop, (for the first time).  It would not add the new songs to the ipod.  I tried several times, with same result.  I never had this problem using my desk top computer.

I also am having a problem with the songs I purchased using the laptop not showing on the desk top itunes, even though it is authorized to do so.  The new songs did show up on the iPad iTunes, however.  Have no idea why.  I thought this happened automatically.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.

Yes it is done through iTunes. The iPhone will never show up in Finder as a device.
