WD 500g fell down, now won't mount!

Hello everyone,
I don't know if this is the right place to be asking this, but its a start.
I have bought a WD 500g My Book pro, I have almost 350g of info on it. Yesterday, my wife tripped over the cord and it fell down on the floor.
Now, when I plug it in I get this error message:
"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
Initialize.. Ignore .. or Eject
Ignore and eject nothing happens, when I hit initialize, it takes me to the disk utility.
I see the hard drive on the left panel named: "2.0 TB WD External Media"
Strangely, when I click on it it says: "2TB" as in 2 TeraByte of storage! Its suppose to be 500g, Only.
I know if I probably hit format, it will work again, but I really need the files on the Hard Disk. Is there anyway to get it to work?
PS. I tries Data Rescue II and Disk Warrior, nothing happened.
If anybody can help direct me to the solution or the right place to get help for this I would really appreciate it.
I can't take this to an APPLE store, I'm not in the states ATM.
Thank you in advance.

It would be best to find out first if the hard drive itself has been damaged. Typically inside those prepackaged Harddrive enclosures you will find a regular 3 1/2" harddrive, either ATA/100 or a SATA type. Sometimes you might find a 2.5" drive, but at 500GB, its probably a SATA 3 1/2" drive.
With any luck its just the enclosure itself that is damaged, and not the hard drive. Physical trauma such as the read/write head(s) smashing into the platters can happen after a fall.
First off, the easiest thing to try is a new USB cable. Its a small possibility, but should be tried.
Do you have access to any IT personnel? If you dangle a case of beer in front of them, maybe they can help with the diagnostics. He/she can remove the drive from the Western Digital enclosure and hook it up to another system to determine if its salvageable and maybe pull the data.
As far as a Linux install is concerned, various Distros offer a LiveCD/DVD option which is a complete operating system on CD/DVD with no need to install. Sabayon Linux offers a specialized LiveCD ISO for download, as does Ubuntu. Download the disc image, burn it, and boot the system from the CD/DVD.
I haven't tried it yet, but there is probably enough intelligence within the usb subsystem on the Ubuntu LiveCD for it to automatically detect the HFS+ partition on your Western Digital external box.
JeffEmbracedDC below mentions a Windows software that will allow you to read HFS/+ partitions. You could always give that a go.

Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?
Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
    Thanks for your assistance.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • External HD Won't Mount - Force Ejected it and now won't mount

    Hi All,
I seem to remember this happening to me before. Isn't there somewhere in the filesystem that OSX writes a file if a drive was mounted? And if you ejected a USB disk incorrectly, it cannot ever mount again?
I can't seem to find that fix anywhere.
ANYWAY, my problem is this. My TimeMachine backup disk (Western Digital (WD) 500 GB MyBook) won't mount (attached via USB). It doesn't show up in the Finder. It DOES show up in Disk Utility but when I click Repair Disk it promptly says:
"Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
I really don't think the disk is fried. I think there is just something keeping it from being mounted. I could be wrong.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Struggling with this waaay too late on a Sunday night.
    I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6 (10A421a)

  • USB Drive Accidentally Unmounted & Now Won't Mount

    Hi,
My Seagate 400 GB USB external drive was accidentally unmounted improperly and now it won't mount. I restarted my laptop, restarted the drive itself, changed cords and USB inputs on the laptop and nothing has changed.
The drive doesn't show up in Disk Utility, but it does in System profiler. In System Profiler it shows up, but with minimal information. My 300 GB Seagate drive (which is fine) shows up with a great deal more information like it's capacity etc. etc.
I have really essential information on the 400 including a project that's due relatively soon, so any help would me greatly appreciated!! THANKS!

    Two things you can try:
Try connecting the drive, and restarting from the CD/DVD that came with your Powerbook, and use the Disk Utility to look for your connected drive.
You may also look in finder>preferences>general and make sure that the boxes are checked to show hard drives on the desktop.

  • Narrowing down "iPod won't mount" problem

Regarding the "iPod won't mount" problem that has been posted a number of times: is anyone having this problem with a USB connection or just with a Firewire connection?
I'm using Firewire and can't get my iPod to mount. I don't have a USB connector for the iPod and I thought I'd do a little research on the problem before I go buy a USB connector.

My 4th generation Ipod would not mount with the firewire but worked fine with USB.

  • XserveRaid (14drive model): Left Side now won't mount?

I have a 14-drive Xserve RAID. It's been working flawlessly for at least two years. Today, I moved the rack across the room, to slightly redesign the office, and when I restarted it back up, the Left Side now will not mount.
It's full of drives, seven on each side. Raid 5. Connected to G5 PowerPC, with 10.5.6 installed.
The left side power light comes on, but after the right side boots and mounts as normal, the left side continues to show a constantly blinking light on the front, with the icon that appears to look like a "guitar head", or Fiber Channel icon. The other three indicator lights on the left side are also GREEN.
I disconnected the fiber channel cables from the back of the Xserve, and the left side fiber channel icon continues to blink.
The right side mounted just fine on the Desktop, as normal.
When I look at Fiber Channel control panel in 10.5.6 System Preferences, the Left Side shows red light and the Right Side shows green light. Red Light means disconnected.
Are there any other diagnostics that I can do today? Of course, I need to be working on files that are from the left side...
Here is a screengrab from the System Prefs:

    Hi Mark
It's a good job you have a backup. It's even possible the controller might be failing? Perhaps the move is purely co-incidental? You could also swop the controllers to see if the problem follows the controller? Although I would leave off doing that just yet.
Reseating the controller is a useful thing to do as over time they can - sometimes - work themselves slightly loose. You've probably had the thing on 24/7 for 2 years so only a shutdown followed by a move could possibly make this apparent? If you search the forum you should find similar situations to yours.

  • Repaired OS 10.4.11 HD prior to installing, Now Won't Mount

I was planning to install Snow Leopard onto a 10.4.11 HD in a MacBook Core Duo running 10.4.11.
The MacBook had already been acting strangely, Safari and iTunes both stopped working, but Firefox was working fine. I verified and repaired permissions, and got the message that the disk needed to be repaired. So I restarted, booted from the Snow Leopard CD and used the disk utility to repair the disk. Halfway through it said something about not being able to find the Node, and that the disk could not be repaired.
I then tried to boot from the formerly functioning HD and it cannot be found. Snow leopard's Disk Utility will not mount the HD. What just happened here? And how do I get my my disk functioning again, or at a bare minimum, retrieve the data so I can start from scratch?

Halfway through it said something about not being able to find the Node, and that the disk could not be repaired.
Get your hands on a copy of the latest Disk Warrior and turn it loose on that HD...that HD should be fine afterwards.

  • External HD won't mount (plus other problems now)

I have a LaCie 1TB that stores my Time Machine backups that now won't mount.
I actually have had a litany of issues since yesterday afternoon, which I'll list here - - perhaps all just coincidence?
iTunes offered to update our iPad 2 to iOS 5.
         Did that fine.
iTunes then offered to update my iPhone 4 (Verizon version; 3G network) - - which surprised me as I thought it wouldn't be compatible with iOS 5
The download of the iPhone iOS 5 indicated it was over 750mb in size and took an hour or two just to download the iOS.
Software extract failed and iTunes indicated it couldn't verify my iPhone with Apple - try later. Got same results several times, leaving my iPhone apparently in a 'new' pristine, empty state.
iTunes no longer recognized my iPhone and offered to restore it, but it wouldn't restore as Apple couldn't verifty it.
As far as I knew, I now had a new(ish) empty iPhone after 10 months of app downloading etc (though I hoped my backups were still on my iMac
Then I noticed shortly after all of the above that my wireless router (Cisco Linksys E1000) had suddenly failed - - its bank of lights were blinking and I had no wi-fi.
I wired direct between the iMac and cable modem which at least got the iMac on the internet.
Then I tried following suggested steps at Apple.com support to restore/repair iPhone issues, one of which included ensuring all iMac software wals up to date
Sure enough, it wasn't - there was a new Security Update 2011-006 plus iPhoto update and 1 other I don't recall
It was a 569mb download in all which took 5-6 hours to download (THAT seemed awful slow as did the earlier iOS 5 download - and this was direct throught the cable modem).
The iPhoto update failed but apparently the other two updates were installed successfully
Re-started iMac and noticed my external 1TB LaCie was not mounting
In the midst of all of the above - at one point I'd had my iPhone connected by USB and using the direct cable internet access I thought I'd try iTunes again to restore the iPhone - - no luck again.   HOWEVER, letting the iPhone sit there in its blank state for several minutes, it suddenly came to life on its own with no software interaction. Up popped the password screen on the iPhone, I entetered my PIN and there was my iPhone in its normal state (what the ?????)
So I have my iPhone back in its normal state under iOS 4.2.10 with apparently every app still on it - - this without a backup restore. Why it was dead - with only the iTunes + USB connector picture on its window before -  I have no idea.
But - -I'm without my external HD. Disk Utility won't give me an option to mount it.
Any thoughts? (and sorry for the long post - - this has been a frustrating 16 hours so far)

  • Kernel panic, now external drive won't mount

I had a kernel panic on my trusty old Powerbook G4 867MHz today. It's running 10.5.8.
Everything on the computer seems to be fine after restart, but the WD MyBook 500MB that is connected directly to one of the PowerBook's USB ports now won't mount.
The drive spins, but no show on the desktop.
Disk Utility sees it. Verification and Repair work perfectly and pronounce the drive in perfect working order. I just can't mount it. Restart makes no difference. Neither does switching USB ports.
I have also connected it directly to an iMac running 10.6.2. The iMac's Disk Utility can also see the drive and tell me that it's in fine health, but it, too, can't mount it. In the drive list in the Disk Utility pane, the first line of description of the drive is black like all the rest. The second line — the working name I have given the WD500 — is grayed out.
    Three questions:
    1. Have I tried everything?
    2. Is this situation retrievable?
    3. If the worst happens and it cannot be mounted as is, what is the easiest way to get files off the drive so I can erase and reconfigure it?
    Thanks in advance.

    HI Norman,
*" If the worst happens and it cannot be mounted as is, what is the easiest way to get files off the drive so I can erase and reconfigure it?"*
There are no way to retrieve those files without connecting to your Mac(s).
*"The second line — the working name I have given the WD500 — is grayed out."*
It's possible the drive has died. Especially since it won't mount on either Mac.
Go here for help to Resolve Kernel Panics
Also, if the WD MyBook came with any software, try reinstalling it.
    And try repairing disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • WD My Passport for Mac won't mount on my Mac Pro

My 1TB external hard drive is less than six months old and was working fine; now won't mount on my Mac. I don't remember disconnecting it without ejecting it but I do think I got a message about needing to eject before disconnecting. I checked in the forum for a possible solution and tried connecting it to a PC laptop; I could see it to eject it but it didn't show up anywhere else. I am not a computer expert! How can I access my files? I have a Mac Pro, Mac OS X ver. 10.6.8.

Historically, the problem has been that many USB-powered drives can't get enough power from a USB port after they begin to age. The Passport is bus-powered, getting all its power from a USB port. Not the best solution for a desktop computer.
To get such a drive going again, you need one of two workabouts:
    1) a powered USB hub (has its own power supply to make up the shortfall) that goes between the external drive and the computer.
    2) use a "Y" USB cable to get power from two USB ports simultaneously (such as http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/USB2AYMBPB/)
Also, WD uses an odd proprietary formatting scheme that is of itself a problem area. WD makes very good bare drives but the enclosures into which they put them to make an external drive are not very good and not particually Mac-Friendly. The formatting makes them harder to use.
Once you get  the files you need off the external,  consider erasing and reformating it to Mac Extended Journaled using Disk Utility. That often makes the drive more reliable without having to revert to USB hubs or special cables. It gets rid of the proprietary formatting that seem to contribute to the problems.
I have three external drives. All have WD bare drives inside but none are in WD encosures. By far the best enclosures for Mac external drives are those from OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
I have two of the desktop model shown and one of its portable version for my MacBook Pro. All three have given me superb service and zero problems.

  • My USB CF Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore. It was last week and worked fine to get pictures from my camera. Now it won't mount. I have tried another card reader and the same problem exists. Also tried different cards..

    Hi
My USB CF (Compact Flash) Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore.
Last week it worked fine to get pictures from my camera but now it won't mount at all.
I ejected it in the correct way rather than just disconnecting it but now i cannot get it to remount!
I cannot even see it in the disk utility or system profiler.
I have tried another card reader (a brand new one bought today) and the same problem exists. I've also tried different cards to see if that made a difference and they still arent being picked up on the Mac.
I have done all the usual things like rebooting, unplugging all other USB devices and then trying but nothing has worked.
I'm a photographer and I'm at my wits end here. I know the cards are fine as i have been using them without issue and they are also new.
Note: If I plug the camera in directly to the Mac, the Mac picks it up just fine as it always has done. Its just the card readers that it wont pick up anymore.
If anyone has any ideas at all other than the following (my so called friends advice) you'd earn my undting love:
    Buy a PC
Use the camera (Thats why i bought the reader in the first place - importing RAW files from the camera is SLOW!)
Replace your CF cards (I have three 8GB cards two of which i had never used til today and they dont work either!)
Buy a new card reader (this is the 5th one in two days - none work on the Mac)
    Many thanks in advance!
    LIsa

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

  • Upgraded to Mavericks. Now External HDD Enclosure Won't Mount. Is there a fix?

Upgraded to Mavericks.  Now I can't get my external HDD enclosure to mount.  A little about this enclosure, as it's not the usual settup .  I have four 3TB HDDs in a RAID5 settup.  The most unique part is that they are formatted as a Windows NT Filesystem (Tuxera NTFS).  Basically, when I set this up, I had to get a lot of info from a Windows-formatted HDD, but also be able to read/write afterwards. It's worked fine for ~ 1 year, but now that I've upgraded to Mavericks, nothing will mount.  I ran Disk Utility, where I see the HDDs (I've partitioned them into four drives of varying sizes), but they are greyed out.  I tried to mount them, but it says it won't and that I should run First Aid.  So I did...tried to "Repair Disk," but it just gets stuck on "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."  For over an hour it's been on that message.
So, does anybody out there have a fix?  I've read several similar posts about people having a hard time mounting and, overall, dealing with external HDDs after upgrading to Mavericks.  But nothing seemed to fit my exact circumstances.  Lastly, I should mention that I've used both Firewire and USB connections.  Both resulted in the same.
    Thanks.

I can't help with specifics for your issue, but some general thoughts:
The upgrade and the disk problem may be a coincidence. It would help you if you could verify that the drive still works fine on a windows machine. If you run a windows virtual machine or have a windows pc, or a friend does, verify full functioning that way. If it still won't mount on the mac, try to copy/backup it's data onto the windows machine (maybe another external drive connected to it. You could then scrub the disk in windows, leave it unpartitioned, unformatted. Connect it back to the mac and format it as HFS+ (Mac extended journalled) and transfer the data back to it by sharing the windows machine external drive and connecting the two machines with a network cable.
