WD 500GB firewire now dead. Anything I can do?

Hi, so the drive that was dying the other day has now died.
I'd hooked up an old Glyph 250GB firewire drive and was moving data off of the dying WD drive. My computer froze while the files were being copied and the WD drive disappeared from my desktop. I tried replugging it in, restarting the computer. Nothing.
I went to disk utility and the drive was not mounted. I ran Repair but Disk Utility is saying that the disk cannot be repaired. I am in a state of panic. I had been--or so I thought--backing the drive's entire contents up to Backblaze but I just checked my list of backed up files on their website and there is barely anything there. (I'd been backing up since last summer.) Stuff that was on the list months ago has disappeared. That's a whole 'nother issue.
I put the drive in the freezer in a fit of desperation. (I guess that has worked for some people.)
Is there any way to get the data off of this drive? It was just working 20 mins ago. I should have a lot of it backed up on another drive but I wasn't cloning the drive and am sure there are some things that aren't anywhere else.
AAAARRRGGGGGHHH.
Thanks for any advice.

You mentioned this is an external firewire HD. I would guess the chipset in the enclosure is failing, not the HD itself. I bet if you removed the actual drive and put it in a different enclosure, it would work. I have had several enclosures fail over the years, but the drives were OK.
You can pick up a USB ore firewire enclosure for not a whole lot of money and check.
