  • PORTABLE USB HARD DRIVES HDTC710XK3A1 SUPPORT - BACKED UP DELL PC AUDIO/DRIVERS & OVERWROTE EXT HDD.

Hello, I recently purchased an: Toshiba Canvio Connect 1TB External USB 3020 Portable Hard Drive Black SKU: 8914951 from BestBuy for$59.99 +Tax.
I used this drive to backup all of my important files from my Old PC since I purchased a new Dell System. Recently, with my new Dell system, I attempted to make a DRIVERS backups to my External HDD, thinking that it would create the necessary folders on the external drive, which it did not. Instead, it turned my 1TB drive into a 31.9 GB sized APPSDRIVERS (W) drive.
I have since lost all mappings to my 1TB drive and files included on the drive. Is there any reliable help or support for this? I would like to have my HDD back to the way it was, please.

I tried calling the Toshiba number, but they are all in the Philippines and told me to go to: KBB.TOSHIBA.COM to reformat my hard-drive. They told me that if I didn't like that answer to hang up and call back and speak with another agent, who would tell me the same thing and give me the same links. Thank you in advance for assistance. --Davio

I reformatted using Disk Management. Toshibas website says there is no softrware to install??
The Toshiba External hard drives are plug-and-play devices.
That simply means (like for any USB external hard drive) recent versions of Windows include the drivers for it. They were first introduced to Windows 95 by OSR 2.1 in about 1996.
But you are apparently interested in the backup (NTI Backup Now EZ) software that's included. You can get that here.

But that's about the worst free backup software I've ever seen. I certainly wouldn't bother with it

  • 10.4.9 and now USB Hard Drive(s) Won't Mount

After running the combo updater on my Intel Core Duo iMac 17" my LaCie BigDisk won't mount nor will my 60GB USB hard drive that I use to backup my MacBook (though this drive DOES mount on the MacBook without any problems). All other USB devices (and my 160GB Western Digital USB Hard Drive and 300GB Seagate FireWire hard drive mount and work fine on the iMac). My LaCie BigDisk wouldn't mount on my MacBook at first, but eventually mounted ONCE on the MacBook. I have tried repairing permissions, rebooting, using an older IOUSBFamily.kext (that was a nightmare and required some CLI experience to undo without having to find a firewire cable that long enough to reach around my desk to use the iMac via Target Mode on the MacBook good thing I saved the original).
At any rate here is the error output in Console.app:

  • Usb hard drive wont mount

i have a drive i use on my old computer but my new mac book pro wont even recognize it. anyone have any fixes for this.

I hope that you can help me as well. I just spent 2 hours with Apple tech support to no avail (case # 83844913). I have a Thecus Y.E.S nano N1050 OTG/USB photo bank enclosure on a 40GB drive that I took out of my powerbook when I put in a bigger drive. It mounts fine on my powerbook and it mounts on my macbook pro when in Windows XP but nothing happens in mac mode on my MBP. I've tried providing it with external power, doing that battery removal reset thing, running disk utilities repair, checking for the drive while booting from the install CD. It's weird that it mounts in Bootcamp (which I've uninstalled now) and I previously formatted it in bootcamp as fat32. On my powerbook titanium (which I just wiped and re-installed the newest OS) it mounts fine so I formatted it as MS-dos and it still mounts fine there and backs-up photos fine from cameras but won't mount on my MBP. In the sys profiler it says USB 2.0 Storage Device, so it does show up there. I have apple care but they haven't been able to help!

  • Lacie external hard drive suddenly won't mount on iMac 27"

Help! My back up Lacie suddenly won't mount. It shows up on my disk utility (but faded) and I tried to repair it with no benefit. I thought it might be a Lion problem, but my other Lacie is working fine. I tried using a different USB cable and unplugging everything, rebooting etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

There may be hardware problem with the drive. However you can try resetting the SMC. Don't be afraid to reset it 2-3x if the first time doesn't work.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • I need help getting LG portable super multi drive GP 10 to work with imac

I have just purchased the LG GP10 dvd writer. How does one install the software? The software disc it comes with is for a pc. I am using Lion 10.7 on an imac desktop.
Where does one download software to make it mac compatable. The box the device comes in says it is Mac compatable, but the device only reads discs for playback. I want to burn files onto dvd rom.

I don't have an LG, but have had an external LaCie burner for years. First, there shouldn't be any need for software unless you want to add some burn software (such as Roxio Toast); I use either iDVD (for movies), iTunes (for music), or Toast (for either). You can also use iPhoto (I don't use it so I don't know all its capabilities).
In any case, my burner does not show up on the desktop. However, once I insert a DVD, that icon will show up - that means your Mac knows the burner is available. You have to set the CD & DVD preference pane (System Preferences) to show them on the desktop.
So what kinds of files do you want to burn? If it's just data, follow den.thed's advice - if your DVD is showing on the desktop and it's just files/folders, you should be able to drag those onto the icon as well (or use the burn folder) and burn using Finder and/or Disk Utility. Movies, slideshows - videos of any kind - need encoding/burn software (such as iDVD, iTunes, Toast).

  • Footage: send to a usb hard drive without using my MBP?

Footage: send to a usb hard drive without using my MacBook Pro?
    Is this possible?
Imagine shooting during a voyage, reviewing the footage in camera and download it to a portable usb hard drive without using a computer in order to format the card and shoot again.
I need to be very light travelling; so no Mac if possible.
My first post around a camera.
My first two weeks new 5DMII owner ,-) and I LOVE it. Still learning how to use it...
    Thanks.
    Regards to all.

No. You would need to be able to plug a USB drive into your 5D and transfer the footage. Your camera can't do that. Take your MBP with you. That's what laptops are for - portability.

  • Airport Extreme + shared USB hard drive // Mac + PC Access

We are getting ready to purchase an Airport Extreme for our home network. Here's what we are working with:
    1) Airport Extreme
    2) MacBook
    3) MacMini
    4) PC
    5) TBD USB hard drive that will be connected to AirPort Extreme *for use as shared hard drive*
From the Apple website, regarding the Airport Extreme "Hard Drive Sharing":
+How does it work? Just connect the external hard drive to the USB port on the back of your AirPort Extreme and — voilà — all the documents, videos, photos, and other files on the drive instantly become available to anyone on the secure network, Mac and PC users alike. It’s perfect for file sharing, collaborative projects, and more.+
Can anyone recommend a specific brand and model USB hard drive that they have experience with in this scenario that was/is used as a shared drive that is accessible from both Macs and PCs?
I ask this question because I have a WD external hard drive that did not play nice - it was either PC or Mac, not both.
    Thanks

I have 1-4 and a Seagate FreeAgent Desk drive (not an endorsement, just answering your question), and can access the drive from all of 2-4. How you format the drive and/or what files you store on the drive will affect your ability to access/use those files on the drive from Mac/PC. For example, I can't use my iTunes library stored on the drive from the PC, as it's formatted for Mac. Honestly, I never have accessed the drive from my PC until you asked this question, but it worked!

  • External Hard Drive Causing Spinning Beach Ball - 27" iMac

I have a brand new 27" iMac with the Core i7 processor. There are no modifications to the unit. I do however have a portable USB hard drive plugged into the unit. Now I imagine that after some time the iMac is putting the USB hard drive to sleep because of non-use. However, after I walk away from the iMac (my iMac is set to sleep after 3 hours) for 30 minutes or so and come back and start using some applications one will eventually slow down and the spinning beach ball appears. For example, when I come back to the iMac after 30 minutes and log back in and launch Mail everything is fine. Then I might launch Safari and all of a sudden the USB hard drive spins up and the spinning beach ball appears. Can someone tell me how to correct this so it does not cause these hang-ups?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
Western Digital external HDs are known for their rather 'dubious' sleep/No-sleep behaviour.
I have two older ones myself with the same oddity.
Have a look here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=300839 and maybe use the app mentioned there http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/31158/keep-drive-spinning

  • 1TB and 2TB portable external hard drives

I have an iMac and a MacBook Air, both up to date in terms of operating system (Mavericks) and I need recommendations for portable external hard drives - one 1TB and one 2TB.
I'm reluctant to use Western Digital because of the conflicts with WD SmartWare which comes with the hard drives.
Looking for reliability. They will be used for Time Machine backups and I may pick up one more of each for SuperDuper clone backups as well.
Thanks for any recommendations and buying advice.

Funny how we all have different experiences with different drives.
Like Thrifty One, I have had very good luck with a number of bare 3.5" WD drives, but would never own another one of there external enclosures. Currently I have a WD in my MiniStack, three in old Maxtor Firewire enclosures, three others that I use on a USB to SATA adapter and one that I put into my early Intel iMac several years ago.
As for portable and 2.5" drives, I have one one older WD Passport, one Seagate GoFlex, the Toshiba from my Mini is in a Sabrent enclosure, plus a Samsung and a Hitachi that I also use on the USB to SATA adapter.
Over the years I have only had one Seagate and one Maxtor that completely fail, plus one other unusable Seagate because it is really loud.
