WD Elements External drive file transfer issue.

I have just purchased a 1.5Tb USB 2.0 WD Elements external hard drive for backing up data. I have partitioned it, using Disk Utility in to a 1Tb Fat32 and 500Mb OS Journaled (Extended) pair of partitions. The OS Journaled (Extended) partition will replace a smaller Maxtor drive as my Time Machine Backup drive.
The problem: When I attempt to copy/move a file from either the Mac HD or my current backup drive, a 750Gb Maxtor, I get the message "*The operation can't be completed because an item with the name "file/folder name" already exists*." On the Windows XP Boot Camp partition file transfer is not a problem
WD have not been of much assistance and I am hoping someone can remedy this problem for me.

and btw, since I have the exact same My Book Essential USB 2.0 1.5 terabyte drive the poster has, I retrieved the Box it came in (Green) and It says plainly on the box. "Compatibility - Formatted NTFS for Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7.
Requires reformatting for Mac OS X Tiger, or Leopard".
OP states he formatted a 1 terabyte partition FAT32. Do any of you actually understand the size restrictions of FAT32? I didn't think so.
I have no problem with this or any other drive since I format every drive I buy for the purpose that I had in mind.
The decision is size/interface/price. Any WD will do, since usb2 at 480 mbits/sec is faster than firewire 400 and out of my 4 macs only usb2 is common across them all, it's a no brainer. Yeah, firewire 800 is faster but only half my macs support it.
So it goes to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity? TM only updates once per hour. In loose terms it sleeps 50 minutes of every hour when it's not needed. So What.
So in a day's time, that's 1,200 minutes that it doesn't spin...that sounds like a feature to me.
How many new, inexperienced users have you people talked into taking perfectly good drives back to the store? I see it post after post and quite frankly, you don't know what you're talking about.
Full disclosure. I don't work for, or have ever been paid anything from WD. I don't have stock in WD (although I've thought about it). I don't have any other ID's on this board so I don't "game it" like other users.

  • Issue with Time Machine and WD Elements external drive

I am experiencing continuous problems with Time Machine set to back up to a WD Elements 1TByte external disk; appears to backup files perfectly but I'm plagued by recurring message 'The disk was not ejected properly...'. Dealer assures me that the disk is fine. No problem if Time Machine is disabled. But then I have no back up...

    christopherfromadelaide wrote:
In fact, when I turn off Time Machine, I still get the ... message, which flashes up every 30 secs or so, and only goes away when I unplug the external drive.
That indicates that the problem may not involve Time Machine at all.
To be sure everything else is ok, verify your internal HD and repair the WD drive, per #A5 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting
If the problems persist, try different port(s), cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may only make marginal/intermittent contact in another).  Also make sure the WD's power cable is snug and secure, and it's plugged-in to a good power source.

  • Error 36 and External Drive File Copy Problem & USB Connections

In attempting to copy a folder with some 200G+ of files from my iMAC, with OSX 10.6.7, to an external portable WD 1Tb HD, newly formatted to HFS+ (journaled), and connected to the iMAC via a USB cable to the USB port on the iMAC keyboard, I kept getting an error message that Finder could not complete the operation as some data couild not be read or written and transfered, and gave the "Error Code -36". After some searching ont he internet for this error code I came across a host forums discussiong the error code BUT all referred to it being the result of MAC OS hidden "dot-underscore" companioned files being created when the MAC OS X file system copies or moves files to a FAT16 or FAT32 volume. This was not the situaion in my case a both drives were OS X formatted HFS+. Eventually I came across a very vague reference to the error also occuring when the cable connection with the external HD was not solid. I reconnected my external HD and attempted the file transfer again - with the same result. Eventually I decided to plug the external HD into a USB pot on the back of the iMA itself, rather than the keyboard set. Sure enough the error issue disappeared - the transfer successfully completed.
So my question relates to the "usb connection" challenge with iMAC. the iMAC has only 4 USB ports on the back directly. I did have two desktop external HDs plugged into 2 of these USB ports at the back of the iMAC, as well as a WACOM pad device into the 3rd, and an EPSON 3880 printer into the 4th, and so was forced to employ the ports ont he keyboard for portable HD. So - what's the answer in a situation where the 4 are insufficient and it would appear that the keyboard ports seemed to be unpowered?? Any suggestions?

It's actually a Time Machine backup drive which is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I wish I'd copied the exact error message.
I believe it was something to the effect of "Error 36: The file could not be copied because some of the date could be be read/written" or something along those lines. Next time it comes up I'll copy it. I have Drive Genius running with DrivePulse, but it doesn't ever seem to start.
My biggest concern is that this is a sign that the drive is failing. When backing up, it also slows, or stops midway through and just hangs there. Though I haven't done a lot of extensive testing on that because if the drive is failing, I don't want to speed that process up any more.
To add to the complication, there is a second external drive which Time Machine is also backing up for me. There is one particular file, the Virtual Machine file, I was trying to get off the other external drive and it produced the same problem. That's when I went into Time Machine to try and retrieve the file that way and it did the same thing. The other external drive is making some sounds, but it doesn't sound like a distinct clicking, more like a more pronounced version of the normal constipated hard-drive sound. The Time Machine drive, isn't making any obviously strange sounds at all.
So, I can't tell whether the drives are failing or if it could actually be that particular file itself causing some strange problems.

  • External drive Data Transfer

Sorry about the vague thread name.
The thing is, I just bought an external firewire drive, Mercury Elite Pro FW400, 7200RPM, 320GB.
I have an issue, when I conect my ipod, and transfer big files (bigger than about 1GB) from the ipod to the external drive. the computer begins to slow down to a crawl, pretty much rendering it useless while the transfer is occuring. My question is, if its sending the information to the external drive, why is it slowing the OS wich is running on the internal HD? is there something wrong here?
just for reference, the external drive is partitioned into 2, an external boot and a large data partition, the internal HD is not partitioned.

    Hello Mr.Durden
It may be because you are performing both at the same time.
What happens if you download the iPod to a file on your desktop, then move the file or content to your External. Of course this will leave you with a file on your desktop to move if saving or trash if not wanted in iMac HD. I think this will help your transfer speed but the total time may be about the same.

  • External Drive Problem - Rampant Issue?

I've been searching the Internet for a day now and I see postings all over the place with the same questions and no real answers. I have a 1st Gen iMac G5 running 10.4.6. I have an external drive (the original HD in a SATA->Firewire enclosure) that has worked flawlessley since I had my logic board replaced under the extended Apple warrenty debacle regarding bad capacitors. Just 2 days ago, the drive become unmountable and all of the data disappeared. Drive Utilities won't recognize it, DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro 4 similarly won't help. Figuring the drive had just upped and died, I picked up a Maxtor 300GB drive and put it in the enclosure. Same thing. It mounts, but drops whenever I try to write to it. Neither Backup nor Retrospect can complete a backup to the drive. Other Firewire devices (iSight, 2nd Gen iPod) work fine and System Profiler says the FireWire ports are functional. I tried using Backup and the drive in question (the Maxtor) to backup my G4 PowerBook Ti and it worked flawlessly. Clearly it's an issue with the iMac. I've seen similar postings here, on MacFixit, MacOSXHints, etc. and have yet to see a plausible explanation. I'm open to ideas. I'm not comfortable having this iMac, which has most of my important files, unprotected by backup as it has proved flaky in the past.
    matt

    Matt,
These problems have been cropping up long before the iMac G5. Read this short post by member Donna Thomas to avoid getting too negative about the situation.
For some users, the use of more than one firewire port at a time can initiate the problem. Something to do with power draw vs the limits of the power supply, I think. I'd recommend trying a PRAM reset, and also a SMU reset (this is performed differently for your model G5 than it is done for the other iMacs): SMU reset instructions (just ignore the title of the article).
While you're booting from your install disc to access Disk Utility to perform Disk Repair, or using the Disk Utility from your Applications/Utilities folder to perform Permissions Repair, or whatever other utilities you're using, at least once shut down and then cold start rather than restart. It used to be, and I think still is, that these are different processes for a Mac, and it just might contribute to recovering the use of the external drive on your Firewire port.

  • External drive and sharing issues?

I've posted this question before but got no answer, so, I'll try again.
Ok here's the situation. I have a small network here at work. We (four of us) share a harddrive connected to computer A. That drive has all the client jobs on it that we all open and change and save. Lately and sporadically (no rhyme or reason) computer B, C, or D may try to open a job and it will say "access denied" and can not open it at all –OR– computer B can open it but will not be able to save it again in the same location. Now even though computer B can't do one of the two things listed computer C and D can open, fix and save with no issues. Again most of the time but not everytime.
Is there a way to fix this "sharing/permissions" issue? It's a bit frustrating.
I have opened the drive we are using and "got info" and assigned every individual listed full access and rights and that did not fix it.
What am I missing here? Or is this a system X issue with permissions and I just have to live with it?
Future plans are going to a server system which I assume will fix the problem but for now this is my set-up and looking for a fix. Thanks
    G4

Couldn't you choose to "ignore permissions on this volume"
for the whole external drive; and then (hopefully) all of the
users would have no immediate sharing message issues?
Of course, when articles or documents have several updates
and more than one author contributing to their content, the
files themselves may develop permissions issues.
Among the casual reading I do on computer topics, I read
more than I need to know, so I know the answer is out
there and not terribly hard to implement; yet unfortunately
I do not recollect the path to the argument on how to do it.
There is a fairly simple outline of a way to handle some of
this stuff in the following page/link; more detailed info is

Among the security documents (download .PDFs) on OS X
there are some fairly good paths to implementing security
to include how to change permissions & privileges; as part
of the overall security strategy; some of those documents
covering these matters are in the Server security setup docs
from Apple Support's database. I have three .PDFs saved.
These vary from 2MB to about 5MB each.

  • File Transfer Issue on Mac Pro System

Hey guys, I have a Mac Pro with a Burly RAID system hooked up. We have two slots on our RAID that are for what we call "Library Drives" that are independent from the RAID and are used to transfer files between one of our editing systems and the other one we have (which has an identical setup).
I have a G-RAID 1.5TB hard drive with footage on it that I need on one of my Library drives. I select it all and drag it over to my library drives but a while into it I always get "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items". The G-RAID ejects itself when this error occurs.
I have made sure that all of the directories and all of the files are "Read and Write" for everyone and even applied it to all of the contents. I also made sure "Ignore ownership" was selected. I also tried making the folder and copying the contents as opposed to copying the folder itself to see if that did anything (at someone's suggestion) and it still is giving me the error.
We managed to transfer the G-RAID files right to the other computer via FireWire 800 but that is unacceptable as we need these Library drives to be the go-between. (this eliminates the possibility of it being one file alone).
The setup we need to work is as follows.
G-RAID Archive --> FireWire Hub --> Mac Pro --> Library Drive on HDD Deck
Any help is much obliged. Thanks =)

    I'd start with the hub.
Another thing that can happen is the power supply brick to the G-Raid could be intermittently failing. When this happens, the drive will try and pull the necessary juice from the bus and that could mean the hub, another drive or the Mac itself. This makes it tough to troubleshoot.
Definitely eliminate everything you possibly can between the Mac and the external drive and disconnect all other firewire peripherals just to eliminate them from the picture.

  • WD Elements external drive-not recognized-can't reformat

Hi- my son bought a WD Elements 1T external drive which he would like to use on his G4 (733mhz) Mac but when he plugs it in (it's a USB 2.0 drive-he has the older USB driver but it 'should' be backwards compatible I thought...) it doesn't come up in the Finder and when he uses Disk Utility it says there is an input/output error. It works just fine on the newer Macs we have in the house. is there any hope that this WD drive will work on his Tiger machine? We have googled and googled and no luch there. He called WD technical support which was a waste of time. Thought I'd post here to see if we get get some help, Judy

    Hi Judy,
No reason it shouldn't work, but if the G4 only has USB1.1 it'll take forever to do anything at all on it.
Did you try Formatting it on a newer Mac?
It also won't be bootable on the G4... and even USB2 is much slower than Firewire/400.

  • Moved itunes library to external drive..now issues..

Hi, I recently picked up an external hard drive and needed space on my macbook so I dragged my folder onto my external drive. Next time I launched Itunes my library was wiped out. I still have the original library on the external but is there anyway I can direct Itunes to pull up the library instead without having to import everything a second time and end up with duplicates? I don't want to lose my purchased apps and songs.

I am having the same problem.   - everything was fine, and I thought I had figured it out, It looks like I messed up on a step though.  I copied the ENTIRE folder to my external drive.  Then when I opened Ituned while pressing the option key, I think I selected the wrong thing (pretty sure I selected "create library" , when I should have selected "choose library".
Now, when I open the itunes folder in my computers (macbook) hard drive OR on the external hard drive, looking for that "itunes library.itl" file, it is blank - just a white icon, and says it was created today.
When I open Itunes from my desktop, there is NO music in it - which is not the end of the world because the files are on my external drive, but all of my playlists and customized itunes stuff is gone.  Is there any way to recover this?!?!

Guess it's *nix SMB implementation issue and has nothing to do with Windows. And you can do nothing to tune the SMB except downgrading initial handshake version (what you already did).

  • Problems with linking iPhoto to external drive files

In order to back up my iphoto albums, I mistakenly put the original files on an external drive rather than dragging the iphoto icon to the external drive.  Now I cannot directly open those files located on the external drive from iPhoto on my laptop. I tried linking to the drive (pressing alt/opt when opening iPhoto and selecting the external drive), but iPhoto on my laptop won't read it.  I don't have enough space now on my internal drive to drag all the originals from the external drive back to iPhoto and then drag them properly to the external drive.  I could do the file "reference" option, but everyone seems to recommend against that since it potentially complicates future actions.  What do you recommend for making iPhoto on my laptop properly read the original files now placed on an external drive?
    Thanks in advance,
    Richard

If this was a Managed Library then your only solution is to put things back exactly where they were.
The Referenced option means starting over from scratch. If you're going to do that, might as well start over as a Managed Library.

  • Read my external drive files with Apple TV

    Hello,
I just got yesterday the latest version of Apple TV and I am looking to be able to read files using Apple TV on my external drive, including MP3 and video files.  I'm a novice with iTunes and Apple products and I'm on Windows 7 with my computer.
Can anyone help me?  My 1st goal is to keep everything on my external drive to avoid filling my hard drive.
    Thanks for the help.

What you need to do is add media files to itunes from the external drive 'by reference' which will note where they are but not copy then to the internal hard drive.
Please note these files have to be in the correct format (h264) or they won't stream.  If they're not you'll have to convert using something like Handbrake.
To add files 'by reference' change irtunes Preferences > Advanced tab and untick the box which talks about copying to iTunes when added.

  • WRT350N File Transfer Issues...

I'm unable to transfer files from one PC to the other.  I've upgraded the firmware to the latest revision (1.03.2).  PC1 is my laptop from work.  At work, I can connect to it w/o any problem and transfer files to/from any PC on the work network.
From home, If I attempt to connect to the laptop from the home computer, XP Pro comes back w/ "Cannot find...".  This should be fairly simple, but I can't seem to get it working.  I had the same problem w/ my other Linksys router before it died.  I went w/ the WRT350n because of the 1GB transfer rate between computers.
If I attempt to ping the laptop from the desktop, I get the correct results.  Going from the desktop from the laptop, no such luck.  Both systems are in the same workgroup and running XP Pro.
If I attempt to RDC into either system, I'm prompted for a username & password.  I receive the "This computer can't connect..." error.  Single Port Forwarding w/ port 3389 is enabled.
I've just about given up...  Anyone have any ideas?

I have this exact issue on my new WRT 610.  I'm all connected between laptop (Vista Home Premium) and desktop (Vista Ult), but when I try to copy files from a shared dir on the desktop to my laptop, it works ok for a while and then STOPS dead in the water after 10-15 mins and says "file is no longer located at location xxxxx".  Basically, my connection severs at that point, in midstream, because I can't even see the desktop anymore from the laptop until I reboot (I just reboot both machines).  This thread seems to indicate that shutting down the firewalls on both machines is the solution and thus is ok to do, but I'm unsure of that solution and scared to implement it.  I did a search and it seems that it is NOT recommended to shut down the Vista firewall even tho I have the hardware firewall now...  because only the Vista firewall can monitor the outgoing connections and halt them...   is this true?  Appreciate feedback, in the meantime I will risk it for a half hour and shut them down and see if the transfer goes longer and/or quicker.  My transfer speed between the two 'puters is disappointingly slow altho I can't quote an exact speed...  70 megs of files was gonna take 2 hrs and 30 mins per the windows popup.
P.S. Can someone please explain why the Vista firewall would be the issue here?  Why would it allow the transfer for 15 mins and 4-5 MB but then slice the connection?  Wouldn't it either allow the full file transfer or else not allow it at all?  I don't understand.
