WD Ext. Hard Drive icon won't go away in Menu Bar?

First, I tried Time Machine and it said I had to reformat my WD, but I didn't want to do that because it had my PC laptop saved to it. So, then I opened WD in Finder and tried to start the process through WD's software. It Scanned and started Processing my Mac files and during the process, I cancelled because I really wanted to use Time Machine. I then deleted the folder "Memeo" from my Finder Applications and proceeded to use Time Machine. I went forward and reformatted my WD so I could use Time Machine, which worked great. However, there is an icon from Memeo stuck in my Menu Bar and I can't seem to get it to go away. Please Help!

Yes; however, I move it to the trash earlier, thinking my Mac would take care of all that. Now when I connect my hard drive, it comes up as Time Machine, so I don't know how to get it back like it was before I began Time Machine?

  • Hard Drive icon won't open and menu bar flashes off and on

All of a sudden, in the middle of the day, my eMac went haywire. I can launch apps and docs are one the desktop. But I cannot open the Hard Drive icon. If I double-click on it (or used Command-O from keyboard), the icon won't open. And when I attempt to open it, the Finder Menu Bar begins flashing off and on (vanishing, reappearing, vanishing) across the top of the screen. I haver rebooted, run disk utility to repair permissions, even booted from TechTools to run its diagnostics. But still no access to the Hard Drive icon. I logged out and logged in as a TEST user, and same thing happens even when logged in that way. Literally, this happened in an instant. One minute the eMac was fine, then this started. Anyone else seen this? -- david

If the problem exists in both your regular account and your Test account odds are that it is at the system level. You can try a Safe boot (hold down the shift key at startup) to see if there is a third party startup item or one of the optional Apple functions that is causing the problem. You could also boot from the installer disk and use the Disk Utility->Repair Disk function. If you have a utility such as Tiger Cache Cleaner which will do a deep cache clean you can also try that.

  • External hard drive icon won't appear on desktop

Apparently spontaneously (has worked fine in the past!) I cannot get a desktop icon for my La Cie external hard drive to appear. I can see the hard drive in Desktop Utility and can eject it through there but the verify and repair options aren't highlighted.

I hear it spinning- I think?
That may not be so good because it suggests the power is getting to it and it is something else more critical to the functioning of the drive that is wrong. If it is the enclosure you could try moving it out of the enclosure into a different one, or into the computer.
I just used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory- no luck.
Ah, so did Diskwarrior see the drive? I didn't think you could see the drive in Disk Utility.
I also replaced the firewire Cable- no luck.
Good try but the flashing blue light suggested something else to me.
I'm now doing to bring it to a local Computer Store to try to retrieve the information.
Try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive.
I wrote to Lacie- but they are so slow in responding- it will be days.

  • Hard Drive icon missing - Desktop folders won't open - Need Help!

I need help! I have a 400 MHz PowerPC G4 with 768 MB SDRAM, no DVD drive - was running OS X 10.3.9 quite happily. We became owners of a new iPod Nano - so we had to upgrade to 10.4.
(I'm writing this on my 800 MHz PowerPC G4 with 768 MB SDRAM, (also no DVD drive) that I upgraded from OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 without incident.)
Installed 10.4 using a FireWire Hard Drive - installed software updates to 10.4.11 - ran Disk Utility - ran MacJanitor - ran DoktorKleaner - everything was working well.
Rebooted and the Hard Drive Icon had disappeared from desktop. Folders on desktop have all lumped together in the top right hand corner of the screen, and refuse to open.
Only programs in the dock still work - clicking on the Finder icon only gives the option to hide. New Finder Window does not work. Programs can be found in Spotlight, but if they're not in the dock they won't open. Trash won't open or empty.
I attempted to reinstall Mac OS X using FireWire, but now the Hard Drive is full and is telling me it will erase and reinstall. I need to save files off this computer now (Sadly no backup exists) before my wife readies divorce papers.
I tried using FireWire Target Disk Mode to copy files - with the 400MHz as Target I just get a spinning Beach Ball any time I click on the Icon. After far too long it opened up an empty window.
With the 800MHz as the target, the 400MHz does not show it on the desktop, so I have no way of copying files to it.
Anyone have some advice that doesn't involve a time machine?

Whenever something starts going wrong with the computer I suggest you first boot from the installer disk, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. Then repair the permissions on your computer. You can also repair permissions from DU on your main drive while booted, but to properly verify and repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive.

From BDaqua (couldn't have said it better):
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes."
    A few questions:
Was this a retail installer disc that you used to do the upgrade?
How much free space do you have on the computer?
Did you use the [PPC Combo updater|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html] to get to 10.4.11?
Did you do all these updates in one single session or restart and check your computer had accepted them okay between each update? It is critical to repair permissions before and after each update otherwise the installers won't install fully and you end up with a mix of versions.
You can set the Finder Preferences, general, to display a hard drive icon, but it sounds like your problems are going beyond that?
You can also try trashing your Users -> home folder -> Library -> Preferences -> com.apple.finder.plist file and see if that clears up the issue. That sets the Finder preferences and if it gets corrupted it will cause Finder problems.

  • Won't allow me to change my hard drive icon

Hello anyone! Here's my problem...I've been using Mac since 1985 and this has always been how you did this and now it's not working, has something changed?
    1. Copy icon, picture, photo
    2. Click once on hard drive icon on desktop and choose Get Info
    3. Click on hard drive icon in Get Info window
    4. Paste
    5. Voila!
The blue halo that usually appears around the icon in the Get Info window is not appearing anymore. I've tried unlocking the Owner and changing from System to me as user and that doesn't help. I've tried renaming the hard drive and no luck. Has anyone else had this issue and can it be resolved. I don't want Cookie Monster as my icon anymore! Thanks!

There are a number of possible problems:
    1. If you use Preview to copy the pix you might not have actually gotten the picture onto the Clipboard, so there is nothing to paste. You can check this by either "Show Clipboard" from the Finder's Edit menu, or try pasting first onto a new folder. If it doesn't paste into the folder let us know. It could be that you haven't gotten the desired picture "active" in Preview--if, for instance, it is an icns file you need to select the 128x128 icon and then click in the actual picture part of Preview's window, then copy.
    2. If your picture is indeed on the Clipboard and will paste onto a folder, but you can't paste onto the drive because the wee GetInfo icon won't highlight you've got a permissions problem. I've had luck changing the icon by TEMPORARILY giving Everyone read and write permissions to the drive, using GetInfo.
As a last resort you will have to use the Terminal, there are several different things you can do, of various levels of complexity.

  • Time Machine won't backup to ext hard drive?

I keep receiving the error message that Time Machine won't backup to my ext hard drive since it can't create the backup file.  Why?  Same ext hard drive for over 2 yrs.  Using iMac (early 2008) with Mountain Lion.

Is it at least twice the capacity of the original?
Is it formatted with a GUID partition?

  • How do I restore my itunes from a ext hard driver?

I have followed the instuctions I have opened both dirves (PC and ext drive) went to Users/Username/music I did a drag drop the file on the ext hard drive told it to replace the one on my PC. I dont thnk its copying it dose it intantly it shows the correct size but nothing is there. I then helf the shift key as I started itunes and seleted choose but then it dosent show up to select.
    What am I doing wrong/

If you connect an external hard drive with music, iTunes won't know the music exists there until you tell it. There are two simple ways to tell the application about the music. 1) Drag the folder(s) that contain music files onto the iTunes icon on the Dock or 2) select Add to Library from the File menu and then use the fileselector to select the drive with the music.

  • Highlighted Hard Drive Icons on Desktop no longer open when dragging/copyin

I noticed this yesterday and I have no idea how to fix it - hope someone here might have a quick fix.
When I attempt to move files into my folders from the desktop, I used to simply drag the files over the icon of the hard drive I wished to place it, and the icon would highlight, and then open, and I could navigate to the folder I wanted and drop them, and all the windows would close.
Now when I attempt to move files off the desktop in this way, the hard drive icon will highlight, but won't' open the window automatically as it used to.
I've done a permission repair and that didn't help it.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Respectfully submitted,
    Len

Thank you for your response. That was exactly the problem. I have no idea how it became switched off, since I'm the only one that uses the computer, but no matter.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Gray X on hard drive icon

Hi, I just bought a G5 I Mac off eBay, It Is supposed to have Leopard installed. But it came with Tiger disk. When I turn it on a white screen comes with the Apple symbol and timer wheel, that is as far as it goes, just sits there spinning. When I start it up holding the options button down the screen has 3 icons, arrow circle hard drive icon with gray X , right arrow. There is a clock at the far left. I can not click on any of the icons, in a bit the screen changes back to the white screen and the timer wheel just sits there spinning. Thank You

It's been a while since I started up using the option button but I seem to remember I had to do something such as use the arrow keys to move between items and select the X - it was something not instinctive. If you're not using an Apple mouse and keyboard the computer might also not respond correctly.
Still, it's strange the computer won't immediately go for the only valid system.  Unfortunately it could be a number of things and you'rll have to work your way through a list.
Bad PRAM battery? Especially with a computer of unknown use history.  Bad PRAM can sometimes cause a computer to hang.  Texas Mac Man's PRAM, battery, PMU tutorial - https://sites.google.com/site/macpram/mac-pram-nvram-cuda-pmu-battery-tutorial
Insert the Tiger disc and hold down C while starting.  Does it boot to the disc?  If so, we can try proceeding from there and it would also narow things down a bit.  I would hesitate, though, to proceed to try to repair the internal drive with the Tiger disc because generally you shouldn't use an older OS to repair a drive with a newer OS.

  • Ext. hard drive ejects when MBP wakes from sleep

When I wake my MBP from sleep (by clicking the space bar), the ext. firewire hard (MyBook 500 GB) drive ejects leaving the msg. that it was not properly ejected and data might have been lost, etc. Is there a better way to wake it that won't cause the ext. hard drive to eject?
    Thanks

    Hi Logan,
You should post over in the Unibody forums, where you'll find many more people who own the same machine as you do (this area deals with the Original MBP).

  • I have 3 older ext. hard drives that I've utilized many times. Today while searching for old files, one of the three is no longer recognized by my PowerMac.  Any suggestions?

I have 3 older ext. hard drives that I've utilized many times. Today while searching for old files, one of the three is no longer recognized by my PowerMac. The drive is not listed in Disk Utility.  Any suggestions?

Is the computer in you equipment line:
    Dual Core Intel Xenon
(which is not a PowerMac but a Mac Pro) the one you are asking about, or do you have an older PowerMac?
If a Mac Pro, their forums are here:
    Mac Pro
and, as Mac Pros have a totally different architecture from the pre-2005 Macs this forum covers, you may not have the same issues that can affect the older models. If someone didn't notice your equipment line, you could get advice that doesn't apply.
If you really have a pre-2005 PowerMac, read on.
If the stubborn external is USB and does not have its own power brick (i.e., it gets power only from the computer's UBS ports--"bus powered"), it may not be getting enough power. As electric motors age, they can demand more power than when new, and the power available on any USB port is limited.
The typical workabouts to making a computer recognize an aging, bus-powered USB drive are:
Get a powered USB hub (has its own power brick
Get a "Y" USB cable: 1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
The second gets power from two USB ports on the computer and often that's enough.
Remember that the USB ports on your keyboard seldom provide enough power even for a thumb drive, so be sure to use the USB ports on the back of the computer.

  • I-tunes on ext. hard drive

I would lie to free up space on my hard drive. A friend said his girls have their music on an ext. hard drive. I bought one and was able to copy the I-Tunes folder to the hard drive. Using windows I was able to hold the shift key while pressing start-Itunes-itunes and the window came up to create or choose a library. Here is the question, What do I do from here? Do I have to create a library first and then choose it? If so how do I do that? My ultimate goal being to have I-tunes open it's library on the ext. hard drive and I want to remove the hard drive that is currently on my lap top. Someone please help, and thank you in advance. JAY

hi, i'm having the same issue.
I followed itunes help and moved my entire library (20 gigs worth of stuff) to my lacie external hard drive. I opened up preferences and selected where I want itunes to find all my music, and itunes can't find any of my music. i'm having to manually select each song from my external hard drive right now, and that is taking FOREVER. I tried several different things, like consolidate library, and I tried messing around in itunes preferences, but nothing. any help would be greatly appreciated, as my macbook only has 60gb of space and i'd like to keep it as free as possible.
    thank you!

  • How to delete pics from LR ext. hard drive within program.

I  can't delete pics from disk.  Error say finder doesn not support the volume. Using ext. hard drive and not in collection. New macbook pro with LR 4.  Never experienced this problem on PC with LR 3.  It appears this is a problem for other users.  Has anyone founds a solution??

Thus must be a pure Mac-Finder/permissions problem.
In LR, as you corrctly assume, when you are in a folder (rather than a collection), you can hit the delete-key for any image, and you will get the dialog box asking for just removing from catalog or executing a physical deletion also in your operating system.
So I would continue any further troubleshooting in Mac Finder.
If Finder would not support the volume of the external hard disk (due to wrong formatting for Mac?), how can the image be read then?
If only deletion is denied, it might be a permissions problem.

Moved iTunes library to an ext hard drive to make space on my int drive... Followed steps from apple.  Now I cannot access my music... It says: "File could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"
I moved my iTunes library to my external hard drive some time ago and I followed the directions listed here on the apple support page.  It did copy my library and now is on my hard drive... I can open iTunes and use it to sync all of my devices but I would like to play my music... I can see all of my music files but can not play them if I click on an album or song it says the following:  "(file name) could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"  I click locate but do not know where to go from there?  I need a way to access all files and not to hunt down one at a time on my hard drive... I am pretty sure I deleted the original library to make space on my internal drive which was the reason for moving it.  I have tried and tried to fix it and do not have a lot of time to do so with a one and two year old at my house who do not like it whenI sit down at my computer.  What to do???  Any help is much appreciated!!!

See Make a split library portable. Move all of the bits of the library together in the the correct shape and it should work. Or undo exactly what you did and then start over.
If you're a former Windows user don't try merging two folders together that have the same name by dropping one into the same folders as the other, as that goes badly on a Mac.
