WD External Harddrive Backups

I have a problem with Lion, it is not compatible with the WD Anywhere Backup Software that I use for backing up multiple harddrives. Now I can't create a new backup-plan. However, when I migrated to Lion, it maintained my old previously made back-up plans. So my thought is, if I can create a backup plan with the software on my old mac running Leopard, I might be able to bring the file for the backup plan over to my Lion based mac. However, I don't know where to find the backup plan files, I'm guessing they are a plist file, but what I found doesn't work.
Can anyone help me find the backup plan files? Again, I'm not looking for the actual backed up files, I want the WD Anywhere Software Backup Plan file that is a setting of some kind for how things are backed up. Anybody?

Time Machine can back up external HDs (if they're formatted for a Mac) along with your internal HD. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #32 for info.

Would like to purchase and external hardrive that would allow me to backup files of both my macbook and my window pc desktop
Can anyone recomend a good not too pricey solution, or can this even be done?

i personally like the firelite external HD which is available through apple and a few other sites like compusa.com. its powered through the firewire port, although there is a USB option, which is probably better in your case if you want to back up files on both your PC and Mac. its not too terribly pricey but it gets great reviews as opposed to the cheaper LaCie products which get horrible feedback. if you dont have any really intense storage requirements you can go with a 40 GB HD to back up the files you want to save without spending too much, say 112+ dollars. people like to use their higher capacity ipods in disk mode to do something similar but youre better off with a dedicated external.

If you don't remember your restrictions passcode, you will have to force the phone into recovery mode and restore it using iTunes. Do NOT restore your backup. The restrictions passcode is part of the backup.
Everything on the phone will be lost.
You can extract the photos from the camera roll the same way you would from any other digital camera. Having a restriction passcode set should not prevent that. do that before you put the phone in recovery mode and restore it.

HT1751 I have done the above steps but I would like to know if everytime I sync will it create a backup on my external harddrive

I have windows 7 64 bit and followed the steps in the article. What I would like to know is if I was to sync my ipad would the backup file be created on the external harddrive automatically or do I have do these steps at least once a week.
Everytime one syncs the ipad it creates a backup in the following directory
c\users\owner\appdata\roaming\apple computer\backup
is there anyway I can change this and have it automatically backup everytime I sync the ipad.

I never lost any media mind you just the library file that tell iTunes where everything lives.
On this point, you can keep a copy of of the "Itunes Music Library.xml" file, which contains the itunes metadata for your music library (songs & playlists).
Obviously, you would still need the files themselves for this to be of any worth, but if you ever find yourself in the same situation you can use the .xml file to recreate iTunes as it was. Keep in mind that you must import the .xml file into iTunes for this to work, you cannot simply move it via the finder.

Using time machine to backup my mac to external harddrive as well as backing up a second seperate harddrive to another external hard drive???

Hey Guys, i currently have time machine backing up everything on my 2011 imac to an external harddrive, which is working fine! No problems there.
As a photographer, i currently have two seperate harddrives. Harddrive (A) - All projects/files, & Harddrive (B) - Backup of Harddrive (A) with all projects/files.
What i'm wanting is for time machine to continue backing up my i mac as usual to the external harddrive, whilst also backing up the contents of Harddrive (A) to Harddrive (B) at the same time without backing up everything on my imac
Is this possible to do??

Sorry Leslie but time machine cant do what you are asking for, however there are free apps like backuplist+ that can sync Harddrive to Harddrive, the app can be found here

Trying to backup my MacBook Pro onto my External Harddrive, error

I am trying to backup my Macbook Pro onto my External harddrive (the same one I always do), and for some reason all of the sudden I get the error message that says that the backup disk is not available. When I click on the time machine icon at the top it just says that the latest back up is just delayed. What should I do?

Your query strongly suggests that you are using thiis particular HHD for Time Machine backups. It seems that your MBP simply is not recognizing the HDD.
When connected it should appear on you desktop.
If it does not, I would connect another HDD to determine if there is an issue with the Time Machine drive. If another drive is recognized then use the same USB cord with the Time Machine drive. If still no success, make an appointment with the Apple Store Genius bar and bring the drive along with your MBP.

Repair permissions and restart your computer. If this does not work, zap the pram. You should now see your external hard drive.

Can you still backup your stuff to an external harddrive if your harddrive is down?

Do you have a bootable backup? If so you can boot from it then see if it can read the internal drive. What model of Macbook Pro and what version of OS X do you have?

The big dilemma with a new Internal drive is separating Drive operation from 'inside the MacBook' operation. If you had an External Enclosure, you could do all the work (including booting up from the new drive) using the External enclosure.
Then if a know-good drive develops problems only when moved inside the MacBook, it is time to try a replacement cable.

I maxed out my TC (TimeCapsule) internal harddrive (1TB) since my pictures + video + music library in an external harddrive became larger than the capacities of the TC one. I plan to buy a 2TB external harddrive, connect it to the USB port of the TC and use it for backups. Then use the TC's internal harddrive as an external harddrive. I want to back up the TC's internal harddrive to the new external harddrive through TimeMachine. How do I make it happen? An alternative way would be replace the TC's internal harddrive with 2/3TB one. If you have suggestion, please let me know.

you can't. time machine will not backup networked drives such as the TC's internal disk. 3rd party applications (for instance ChronoSync) may be able to do that, though.
An alternative way would be replace the TC's internal harddrive with 2/3TB one.

How to backup Logic Pro songs on external harddrive?

In case of an earthquake or other event that ends up completely ruining my computer and kills Logic Pro, how do I make a backup of the songs I've made on an external harddrive? (Sorry this question may be extremely easy to answer, but I'm new at external harddrives.)
I've bought a portable USC Drive with 120GB. Do I just need to make a copy of the Logic Pro song files and transfer them to this portable drive? Or do I need to load more information about Logic Pro onto it as well? And does my XS key have any involvement in case the my compuer is ruined and I need to extract the song from this portable drive?

if ur logic project are not messy u just copy the folder where are all ur logic project to ur external hardrive that's it.the logic key just need to be plug when u launch logic,otherwize the project itself can be place and copy without any problem.now take care if u use some midiinstrument (like exs)that use sample,ucould also copy the exs library in ur external hd.depend if u use the factory sample it's not a problem,as far as u crash ur mac u'll find it back on ur dvd installer,otherwize u can find the exs folder there:
library/application support/logic/ then u v got sampler instrument and exs factory sample .u can both copy it in ur external hd.
that's the quicker way (for me as im organize).
now if u don't have 200 project and u wanna be sure to get everything backing up ,just open each project and save each one as project:
file/save as project.
u click on copy all ,u choose ur external hd as the location and u click save.then it will pick up all the file u use (active or inactive) in ur arrangement and will copy it where u want..

I have just bought my very first mac this week. I have the iphone 4 already but have been used to using windows my whole life.
I have purchased:
21.5inch iMac 2011
2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
4GB RAM
500GB Harddrive
Latest version of Lion OS
Its only been a couple of days and already I dont know how I ever lived without it.
The predicament Im in is this: I want to use apple Tv to stream my music, photos and films to my TV in the living room. But I would also like to store all of this on an external harddrive, rather than filling up my internals with it then not having enough room for anything else.
Can I store my films, music, photo's etc on an external harddrive and still stream to apple tv? Does it need to be a specific external harddrive? And whats the best way to back everything up? Would a 2TB Time Capsule backup my mac and everything on my external harddrive?
Sorry for all the questions, Im very new to this and dont know much about harddrives.

Yes. However, it gets more complicated. Time Machine is better for archival backup, and typically requires twice the space for the data as the original. Streaming from external drives while possible can get laggy on video unless you use Firewire or Thunderbolt. If you have any old 802.11b or 802.11g devices, you'll want to keep them on a separate network. A better investment is a couple external hard drives for backup and one for any excess stuff that won't fit on your main 500 GB drive, and to use cloning software instead. I have an AcomData 120GB, a Western Digital 200GB and a Fantom 250GB external HD. All are working well. LaCie is another fine brand. I usually buy the major brands by price. Expect to pay $0.50 or less per GB (my last ExHD was $90 for 250GB).
If you are very concerned about longevity, then look at the Seagates as they carry a 5-year warranty (at least on the internal laptop drive that I have purchased).
