Wd my book 500gb studio edition wont turn on, white light half lit

Hi,
I have a Western Digital My Book 500GB Firewire/eSATA/USB 2 Studio Edition external hard drive that i bought 2-3 years ago. I've backed up a lot of data then and after that not used it at all until recently. I can't seem to get it to mount under Lion, as soon as I plug in the power lead the white bar of light at the front of the drive lights up but only the top half of it, there are no noises and plugging in a USB lead does not show the drive on my iMac.
Can anyone advise please, there's tons of data and I have only used the drive literally a few times. I just checked and my limited warranty expired six months ago so I can't ask WD to help.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

To give the conclusion in case anyone googles to here. I had to pry open the original WD enclosure and get the hard drive out. It's a big, cheap, plastic box made to resemble Apple's shade of silver, thus giving false confidence in quality of build which is atrocious.
The hard drive itself is perfectly fine, all the data is intact and transfer is at full speed. I had to get an external SATA to USB adapter and connect it to my iMac via a USB port. From there Lion treats it as any other external hdd.

  • Install and run  Leopard on Western Digital 1TB "My Book"2 Studio Edition

    Hi
I'm considering buying this HD and would like to install and run the OS from it - is this relatively easy? And what connection would you recommend usb or fw400?
Once installed on the hd i'd then like to wipe the iMac HD and do a clean install.
Also, i assume it would be advisable to partition the wd!
    thanks

When you say "run the OS from it", do you mean permanently or just until you've finished your tidying? I'm not sure I'd recommend using an external drive all the time although technically there's no reason you shouldn't.
What is going to happen to your existing data? From what you describe, it looks as if it will be lost. My suggestion would be to partition the WD as you say and use one partition for a clone of your existing internal drive (use SuperDuper! from www.shirtpocket.com or an equivalent) and the other for Time Machine. If you wish you could then do a clean install on the internal drive (why do you feel the need to do that?) and perhaps use Migration Assistant to put your data back from the clone onto it.

  • Z2 wont turn on red light

my xperia z2 abruptly turned off while there was 10% battery was remaning since then i tried every thing pressed all three buttons together power volume and tried that red button on the side of sim tray nothing is working out this is very worrying moment for me plz some help

You may need to perform a software repair using PC companion. The process will erase all internal memory. You might need to charge your device for about 1-2 hours before so the device has at least 60% battery.
Make sure the device is not connected to computer or laptop and turned off (sometimes you have to press power button and volume up until the device vibrates 3 times or on some devices you have to press the small button near the SIM tray or on the back of the device).
Open PC companion->support zone->phone/tablet software update->repair my phone/tablet blue highlighted.Follow the steps given,do not connect your phone until prompted to press volume down while plugging USB cable. If PC companion does not start the repair process, you might need to run it in compatibility mode with Windows 7 (in some cases XP).

My PS4 i have had for under forty days has stopped working, i try to turn it on by pressing the power button but i doesnt work and i have also tried to turn it on using the controller but still nothing. Recently i took off the cords and opened the PS4 to see if that would help, still nothing. This has happened before numerous times but when it did all i did was put the power plug out and then back in AND boom it was working, but now this time i tried that but it didnt work. help please.

  • My appletv wont turn on (the light) and I only purchased it in the last six months. what's the go??

the light was coming on this morning and now it's not, is this just a 'resetting' issue or a common problem? I just can't believe it's not very old and this is happening.

So you have no signal on the TV?
Could be something simple like a fuse in the power lead.  If you have another similar one try that.
Device failure after such a short usage is not common but not impossible and some will - if only 6 months old it will be under warranty (and the remote).
If you have a micro USB lead then you could hook it up to a computer running iTunes as described here to see if the software is corrupted and it will restore:

  • TS1367 my brand new macbookpro  wont turn on!

my brand new macbookpro (bought it on Monday this week), wont turn on. i have tried changing the power outlets and it still wont turn on. the light is green in the cable when its plugged in. Any advice? i'm very disappointed to face this problem so soon.

    Hello there liron78,
If I understand correctly, you are unable to turn on your MacBook Pro even with a different power outlet. I would use these other troubleshooting steps from the following article, named:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).
If the issue persists, I would use step 5 to get ahold of AppleCare either for additional assistance or to help setup service for it.

  • WD My Book Studio Edition 500GB won't mount

I know that the news is likely to be bad but here is hoping that I will get some feedback about "what next" in terms of what is possible if not possible to mount with a fix of some sort.
    The problem:
I have a Western Digital My Book 500GB Firewire/eSATA/USB 2 Studio Edition external hard drive which is daisy-chained with 7 other hard drives, mostly WD and one Lacie which is the only drive to not mount.
I have done all the checks in that I have disconnected it from the daisy chain and followed the prescribed start up by unplugging, waiting, plugging it into direct power socket, pressing the rear button (also tried it with not pressing it), then plugging in Firewire/USB cables (in turn of course) into the drive and then only into the freshly restarted MacBook Pro (which is also mains connected) running OSX10.6.8.
Nothing will make the drive mount.
Replaced it into the daisy-chain, tried again with full power-cycle of the entire chain, they boot up as expected, the unmounted one remains visible in Disk Utility, checks out fine, repairs fine (since there is nothing TO repair) and still will not mount.
Unlike most (but not all) it has an Apple Partition Map, not a Master Boot Record or GUID Partition Table, if that is even relevant.  The other (WD) drive with the same partition map is fine.
    The question:
Now having done my research I am very disheartened to note that it is likely to be a lost cause.
I cannot afford to lose the data on there.  It contains 480GB+ of film data which I was in the process of "mirroring" (but since I have 6TB of data to mirror that is a big task and I was working in strict order and only upto 5 with this one being 9 in a set of 13...) and I am keen to learn what I can possibly do to rescue this terrible situation.
Can I use firmware to "fix" its unmountability?  Can I send it somewhere to have the data extracted?  Can such data even be accessed, given that Disk Utility can see the drive but cannot "see" the files contained therein?
    Please and thank you.

I don't know how old the WD external is. I would think it's extremely unlikely its an ATA/IDE drive; I don't think they even came as big as 500GB, probably much smalller. Those were discontinued a long time ago. It's almost certainly a SATA 3.5" drive. But when I did this, I called WD first to confirm that the drive was SATA 3.5". Any SATA 3.5" drive, no matter what brand, will work with this enclosure.
If you do a search for WD MyBook "take apart" or "remove drive," you will get a number of hits with illustrated directions for removal. You might not find directions specifically for your model, but what you will find, even with variations, will give you the general idea. You just pry open the plastic case deliberately with a flat blade screwdriver and then proceed to remove the various screws. The whole operation took about a half hour.
Once out, you just slide the drive into the OWC enclosure -- no connectors to worry about -- and close it back up. It couldn't be simpler.
EDIT: to prevent static electriciy from possibly wrecking the drive, just be careful not to touch the drive contacts or the circuit board.

  • My Book Studio edition 1Tb problems with Leopard

I bought a My Book Studio Edition 1TB to back up to using Time machine from my Mac Pro OS 10.5.8 connected via Firewire.
The drive is described as being able to shut down when the Mac is powered down. It doesn't.
Also the WD Drive Manager supplied doesn't work as it supposed to.
Is this a compatibility problem with the WD My Book drive and Leopard? has anybody else had this problem?
    Thanks.

I really don't know. The WD Manager may not work because it may only work with Windows. You may want to try repartitioning and reformatting the drive as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
This should enable it to work with OS X properly. However, only if this is a notebook drive system can it be bus powered. If so then you would have to connect it to a USB port if you want the drive to turn off when the computer is shut down or put to sleep. FireWire ports do not power down when the computer is shut down or asleep.

  • My mac book air turn on with grey apple icon and spining wheel. then it wont turn off.

my mac book air turn on with grey apple icon and spining wheel. then it wont turn off.pls help

Have exactly the same problem with my wife's MacBook Air. After restaring in Restore mode and trying to repair the disk (Disk Utility showed errors in the verification), the system tells me to backup as much data as possible (how?), re-format the disk and restore backed-up files. Error comes up when "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required".
Original restart action was done due to software update requesting it, if I remember correctly, iTunes was updated.
I don't want to start a painful back-up procedure (although I do regular back-ups): how should I know, where iPhoto stores it's data or where my mails are (yes, still using local mail)? How can I access the data if I can't boot?
My iMac's disk crashed also a couple of months ago and I'm still recovering. I have four Apple devices, two of them have failed. Can Apple afford such a ratio?

  • Time Machine Error with brand new WD My Book Studio Edition

I have a brand new iMac and just bought a new WD My Book Studio Edition 500 gb HD for specific use with my Time Machine. The iMac has a 500 HD is about 3 months old and the WD HD is brand new. I am getting an error when I try to activate and back up with Time Machine that says, " Time Machine Error. This backup is too large for a backup volume. The backup requires 524.4 gb but only 465.5 gb are available. To select a larger volume, or make the backup smaller by excluding files, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine."
I copied the files from the Time Machine to my hard drive to make as much space as possible. I have a capacity of 465.44 GB and 28.48GB of free space on my MacHD. I have a capacity of 465.64 GB and 465.49 GB of free space on my WD. It is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) the way it was originally sold. I have not tried to reformat. Not too sure about how to. But I have tried all of these scenarios.
I have tried the following and nothing works to get Time Machine backing up at all:
    1. I have changed the preferences in Time Machine Options to a smaller file size excluding the applications folder (appx. 12 GB),
    2. I have zapped the P-RAM,
    3. I have reset the index in the Spotlight by putting my Macintosh HD and Time Machine in the Privacy section, let it reindex and then pulled it out, and
    4. I have deleted the preferences in Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences>com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
Nothing is working and I bought the HD when I was home visiting in the states and I live in Bogota, Colombia. Quite hard to return HD.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks,
    Marsh64

You have a nearly full 500 GB hard drive and you are trying to use TM with a 500 GB hard drive - but the way TimeMachine works, your TimeMachine hard drive should be at least twice the size of your backup data. In other words, to use TM effectively you should have bought a 1 TB external drive.
With a 500 GB drive for backups, you need to determine exactly what has to be backed up and what can be left out. If you open the TimeMachine preferences you'll see that there's an Options button. Click it and you can select folders to exclude from backing up. For example, you might decide that you don't need to back up your music because it is all on your iPod anyway and the Mac OS and your applications are all on CD so those can be left out. By carefully paring the list down you may be able to get your backup data down under 250 GB and if so, then TimeMachine will do the job for you.
Another solution would be to drop TimeMachine as your backup solution and simply use a program such as SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner (CCC) to perform your backups. There are advantages and disadvantages to each backup method. As you mull your options, don't be afraid to ask more questions.
