WD My Book Essential Edition 1TB

I have been transferring home DV tapes to DVD and putting everything on my 320gb external drive which is quickly running out of space. I purchased a WD My Book Essential Edition 1TB USB 2.0 but I'm hesitating opening it - as I didn't really research types of HDs - it just seemed like a good deal (it was on sale and I got an additional 10% off).... should I open it and use it or return it and get something else?
thanks!

Hi valleen
I agree with rkaufmann87, if you were just backing up the Internal HD then the USB drive would be just fine. But if your going to move large files off the Internal HD and access then on a regular basis, get yourself a FireWire HD.

  • My Book Studio edition 1Tb problems with Leopard

I bought a My Book Studio Edition 1TB to back up to using Time machine from my Mac Pro OS 10.5.8 connected via Firewire.
The drive is described as being able to shut down when the Mac is powered down. It doesn't.
Also the WD Drive Manager supplied doesn't work as it supposed to.
Is this a compatibility problem with the WD My Book drive and Leopard? has anybody else had this problem?
    Thanks.

I really don't know. The WD Manager may not work because it may only work with Windows. You may want to try repartitioning and reformatting the drive as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
This should enable it to work with OS X properly. However, only if this is a notebook drive system can it be bus powered. If so then you would have to connect it to a USB port if you want the drive to turn off when the computer is shut down or put to sleep. FireWire ports do not power down when the computer is shut down or asleep.

  • My Book Essential Edition

I recently bought a 320 gig My Book Essential Edition external hard drive to back up my poor, suffering, overwhelmed iBook (OS X 10.3.9). It says Plug and Play, and when I plug it in, it shows up on the desktop, but nothing else happens. When I try clicking on setup.exe, my computer starts to open OS 9. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is my OS not compatible with the My Book?
    Help!
    Alyce

Alyce, Welcome to the discussion area!
".exe" files are Windows executable files. The only way to use them on your iBook is to purchase and install VirtualPC.
I found the following directions on the Western Digital site:
Once the hard drive has been mounted to the desktop, open the My Book Premium Edition hard drive icon on the desktop, open the "Mac" folder and run the program called WD Button Manager Software.dmg to install the "Fuel Gauge" functionality which monitors drive space usage on the hard drive. Run the program called WD Backup.dmg to install the WD Backup software.

  • Western Digital My Book Essential WDH1U10000N 1TB

    Hey Gang
I'm shopping for an inexpensive 1TB External Hard Drive. My primarly use is for backing up several smaller Lacie External HD's. These Lacie's have mostly Captured Video, and FCP Projects. I would also depend on this back up drive to save all the Scratch Disk Files for FCP.
    It seems these WD's are rather cheaply priced, and have a decent rating;
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136186
And here's a Fire Wire Driven Similar Drive (Studio Edition)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136184
But I'm sure these 1TB WD drives would have to be formatted for Mac OSX.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi again Hatter
"This new one is a single drive, hence no RAID, has quad interface. And is not rugged."
I appreciate all your help (really). But now I'm confused again.
When you say "hence no RAID, has quad interface. And is not rugged."
    You're referring to this one?

But do you at least agree that the WD Studio Edition (although cheaper), is NOT in the same league with OWC's external drives? Yes?
If given a choice, this one?

  • WD My Book Studio Edition 1TB "Unknown Device"

    Hi,
I ust picked up my new WD My Book and followed the instructions for lugging it into my mac G5. I am sing a FW 800 cable but nothing appears. When I look at the system profiler under wirewire it registers that there is a device plugged in but says it is "unknown".
I tried downloading the WD My Book software from wdc.com but there is no change. I have tried all the connections I have but no cigar there either. When I tried downloading the firmware update it asked me to plug the device into the USB, but nothing puops up in Finder or in System profiler when I do so.
I really, really need this device up and going by saturday because I will be using it in studio. Can anyone shed some light on my predicament?
    Thanks...

OK, so if these drives are junk, and we're better off with a different brand, why stop there?
WHICH other brand is the best to use? I read a zillion great reviews of Seagate, bought one, and had tons of problems with it, it's replacement, and finally, after b**ching to the execs, finally got another replacement (& a 1.5TB instead of 1TB). A tech over the phone told me that despite the unit I bought being advertised as Mac-compatible, he told me it is not!
So, they sent me one that is, and it's been working ok for now.
I've read numerous other reviews & feedback on other brands too, and except for some very expensive models, it seems that EVERY brand is both loved & hated by many. Which is as good never spent a minute doing all this research. I figure it's pot luck, best to have at least two external drives for back-up, and keep my fingers crossed.
Do you know any brand that is head & shoulders above all the rest?

  • Trouble Installing WD My Book World Edition 1TB

    Hi,
Yesterday I bought a a network hard drive at Bestbuy to use with my two 13" Macbooks which both run Snow Leopard. The Mac section of the HDD manual basically says, "plug it in. it works." I wish this were the case. Some times my computer recognizes the HDD and places it under the Shared menu, and some times it doesn't. When it does recognize it, some times it calls it public and displays a little HDD icon which I can drag to my desktop as an Alias, and other times it looks like a little server called MyBookWorld and lets me log in as a guest or as an admin if I can figure out the password. Interestingly enough, once I used the user name and password for logging into my Mac and it worked perfectly, but not ever since.
If I plug the drive directly into my MacBook via ethernet, it shows up every time, but I want to be able to use it wirelessly, or else I would have purchased a USB drive.
I'm using an Actiontec GT724-WG DSL Modem/Wireless router which was just hooked up last week. (We moved into a new place in which DSL is the only option, and TDS are the only providers.)
I've never done anything with my network before. Is there some kind of setup I need to do to ensure that my computer picks up networked drives and stuff at home? Do I need to become some kind of home network administrator? Has anyone run into similar problems?

I too apparently made the mistake of buying a WD World Edition II 2TB drive after seeing it sale priced by WD on Dealmac.com. I am unable to see it as a network drive or using any disk utility tool when connecting it either directly to my Mac or directly to the latest Airport either by USB or Ethernet cables. All comments on websites seem to require that I delve into programing with SAMBA or some such to hack the drive and get it to be visible and usable on my Mac network. Does anyone have a suggestion or solution for getting a WDWE up on a Mac network without complex programming or having a Windows machine? Or is it really not functional for a Macintosh user without a degree in Windows networking? Thanks!

  • Airport Extreme and My Book Home Edition 1TB external drive

Connecting the My Book Drive to Airport Extreme and entering passcode for A.E. causes it to turn off. Is this normal? Western Digital also claims that this drive cannot be shared this way and that their network drive needs to be used. Any thoughts on this? Is there a list of compatible drives?
    thanks in advance.

Sounds like I have a similar problem, although I am able to browse the network drive for a bit before it decides to disconnect. To reconnect I have to reset the AE. My drive is a seagate 'desktop', not sure if there is a compatible list, but I have tried others which did the same thing. Now I've decided to just use a USB hub to connect all my drives to, not ideal but it is simple

  • MY BOOK Essential USB to Firewire Port

MY BOOK Essential edition uses a USB connector. Is there an adapter/cable that would connect MY BOOK USB to my G4 Firewire port? I understand the speed will be limited to the USB hardware in MY BOOK.

    Buy a bare FireWire case.
    Pull drive from MyBook.
I would normally say to avoid MyBook and MyBook Pro anyway.

  • Airport Express and Western Digital My Book World Edition

Hi all, first time poster long time lurker
I've just bought a WD My book world edition 1tb (the white one) and simply cannot get it to work with my current set up.
I've got a mac book pro & Maci mini. Internet comes via an Airport Express plugged into a netgear adsl router dg834 v2 which gets it's IP address via DCHP from my wife's firm
I followed the set up instructions but neither computer can see the My Book.
However if I plug the Mac into the router it can see it, ditto if I plug the My Book directly into the Mac Book's either net port.
So why can't it see it over the airport, when the two computers can both see each other?
Confused by the whole thing, and any help or advice would be most greatfully recieved...
    Many thanks
    Andrew

    Welcome to the discussions, eyedropper!
So why can't it see it over the airport, when the two computers can both see each other?
The AirPort Express will only support a compatible printer. It does not support a hard drive at the USB port. You'll need an AirPort Extreme for that. Check this Apple document to confirm and verify:

  • Western Digital My Book Home Edition auto spin down?

Hello - I am looking to purchase a Western Digital My Book Home Edition 1TB USB hard drive to connect to my Time Capsule. Can someone who owns this model tell me whether or not the drive will spin down automatically when connected to the Time Capsule?
    Thank you in advance.

Yes, but the spin-down is set to a ridiculously short time frame (10 mins or less) and cannot be changed. Highly irritating

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n & Western Digital (My Book Essential 1TB)

I just bought a Airport Extreme 2days ago. I am trying to connect to my external HDD which is Western Digital, My book Essential, 1TB. But I just could not see the HDD on my laptop. The HDD is detected by the the airport utility and shows 930.9GB WD My Book 1110 1032. I have enable file sharing on the device as well. But i just could not see the HDD. I have tried connecting my both laptops wirelessly & using EtherNet Cable, for both options, the HDD is still not visible. Please help me
    Details as below,
Airport Extreme with firmware version 7.5.1
    Airport Utility, version 5.5.1
All systems at home are Windows XP with Service Pack 3
    Internet Type: Cable
    HDD details
Brand & Model: Western Digital, My Book Essential, 1TB
    Format : NTFS
Network description, Cable modem -> AE -> HDD into the USB of the AE
    All laptop are on wireless.
I have called up the apple support helpdesk, which they ask me to hold on, but the line was cut off, and no one actually call me back.
I badly need help to get this working..

I have the same WD drive on my Airport. In the Airport utility, I have checked the "Enable File Sharing" box. I have selected to share with my Airport Extreme password. Further down the page, the workgroup box is filled in as "WORKGROUP" - I did not have to do this, the Airport seems to have detected it. If you have nothing there, you might want to fill it in.
On the PC, with File Explorer, expand the tree My Network Places:Entire Network:Microsoft Windows Network:Workgroup. The Airport shows up here. When I click it, I get a prompt for username and password. I use the info from the PC that I use to manage the airport. Then My Book shows up and I can browse it.

  • My external hard drive (1TB WD My Book Essential) suddenly has no room to backup with Time Machine! I am using Maverick OS and wondered if it is because of a bug in the system software.

My external hard drive (1TB WD My Book Essential) suddenly has no room to backup with Time Machine! I am using Maverick OS and wondered if it is because of a bug in the system software. I purchased a new external drive with 3 TB and wonder if I will run into a problem installing it. I don't know how to transfer my files from the previous HD to the New one. I was told to use a cable, but how do I do it? Do I connect them both to the computer and drag the old into the new? How is it done?  Why did this happen, the overloading of the Time Machine?

Why has the TimeMachine drive run out of space?
With the limited amount of information you've provided it is hard to answer this question. TimeMachine should continue making backups until the drive is full and then it should erase the oldest backup(s) to retrieve enough space for the next backup. Unless your computer's hard drive has close to 1TB of space on it, you shouldn't see a message saying TM cannot backup because it is full. However if you do have more than 500GB (1/2 a TB) then I can see how that message might occur. Also, if you are using the TM drive for double duty (backing up more than one computer or storing data other than TM) you could get that message.
Will you have this problem with a 3TB drive?
I always recommend that people look at how much they'll be backing up in total, add a bit extra for the future, and then multiply that by at least 1.5 and even better to double it. That indicates how large the TM backup drive should be. The TM drive should only be used for TM backups. It is ok to use one drive to back up  more than one computer but if doing so, add up the contents of all the computer drives, adjust for the future and then double it.
    Moving Forward
Disconnect the old TM drive for now. Connect the new drive and let TM do its job. I don't recommend that you try to transfer the TM backup from the old drive to the new one. Keep the old drive around for a couple months just in case you find you need it and then after a few months, if you like, you can erase it and use it for something else.

  • Can I use my 2TB WD My Book Essential for the Time Machine feature on the MacBook as well as two other Windows computers (one running 7 and one with Vista)?

Can I use my 2TB WD My Book Essential for the Time Machine feature on the MacBook as well as to store information from two other Windows computers (one running 7 and one with Vista)?

Yes you can but you need to partition the drive into at least 2 separate drives.
To do that you need to use a Windows PC to do the first partitioning. Say you split the drive into two partitions each 1TB (or close to 1TB) each.
Partition fand format both partitions on a Win PC as one NTFS and the other FAT32.
Then move it to the Mac and Reformat the FAT32 partition Mac Extended (Journaled) with a GUID Partition Table.
I have that same drive and that is what I did originally with it. I now have it just for the Mac as I have other externals for the Win systems.
    Good Luck.

  • My Book 3.0 (1TB, USB 3.0) detection problem with Envy Phoenix 810-135qe

I have  a My Book 3.0 (1TB, USB 3.0)... The older My Book not the newer one... "My Book Essential" or something like that.
I was using it with W7 x64 backup utility on an older HP desktop (HP Pavilion a6560t) without issue up to the day my new HP Envy 810-135qe arrived. I downloaded the latest drivers from WD support, and the thing PnPed fine off the non-powered USB 3.0 on the back of the 810. However, the 810 drops connection after sleep, hibernation, lock, or simply just over time. I've run diagnostics on the WD and the cables, all checked out fine. I tried shutting off power saving to the USB 3.0s in device manager (just a guess), and that seemed to work for a few weeks, however I'm still having the detection issue periodically. All of my drivers are up to date on the HP side. I'm fully reformatting the WD now to see if that might somehow fix the issue (I'll update in a few days on how that worked out).
Anyone have any idea what's amiss? I suspect something with the BIOS. HP chat support has been no help (they go through the same checks I've already done myself) and they got really spooky on another chat when I asked about adding a SSD as the boot drive (I knew it was an issue from here and other forums).... Handed me off to second tier support, and all they would tell me is that they couldn't tell me anything... Basically, no support for any config except for how it was shipped because it's a "custom build" (yes, buyer's regret big time).
Secondly, anyone running a similar config with a en external back up that's running smoothly? My WD is getting old so I was thinking of one of the newer portable USB 3.0 HDDs (both 2.5 and 3.5). My specs follow.

I also have a "WD My Book Essentials" 2 GB external hard drive.  It works perfectly without making any changes to the BIOS.

  • WD My Book essential from Windows to Mac?

I want to add my old Windows based Musik, Videos and Fotos to a MacBook Pro. My old Windows PC broke down and now I only have a BackUp of the Data on my  WD My Book essential 1TB external Drive.
Is it possible to connect it to a MacBook Pro or is my Data lost?

    Smeis wrote:

Yes. You may have to use an external power supply, if the drive doesn't have one.
I only have a BackUp of the Data
    How was the backup made?
If it was made with the built-in Win backup utility, then probably you won't be able to access it on a Mac. You need to find another PC (or install Win on your Mac), extract the data, and then copy it over.
If it was a plain copy, then you don't need anything. You should be able to copy it without any additional tools.
Note that you don't need any additional software (such as Paragon's NTFS drivers) to copy files from the drive.
