WD My Book Pro external hard drive button manager for 10.5

For owners of the Western Digital My Book series of external hard drives.
As you may know, the old WD Button Manager software is not compatible with 10.5. However, it seems that neither is the official new software the WD Drive Manager!
Anyway, I trawled around the internet and came across a version of the Button Manager software with instructions on how to make it work with 10.5 - instructions are in German and English.
http://www.divshare.com/download/4474545-424
My version of the instructions:
Mount the included disk image
Run the patch script to generate a package on your Desktop
Unmount the disk image
Run the package on your Desktop and do not reboot
Enter the required command in Terminal
Add the StartUpItem manually
Reboot
Works a treat
Makes me wonder why Western Digital are incapable of writing software that works as advertised.
Hopefully this will help somebody.
matt

I can't say about 10.5, as I am on 10.5.2, but my 2 drives work as you say they should. They power down when my Mac powers down, and the lights on the front operate as they should. They show me the approximate used space when idle, and the lights flicker up and down when the drives are accessed.
I suggest that you make sure to update your drive's firmware to the latest, and ensure (in Profiler) that the version actually updates. Then remove all traces of the WD software, and reinstall the latest version.
I say to verify the firmware version, as mine appeared to update, but did not, despite repeated attempts. I got a 9-pin to 6-pin cable and connected the drive to the FW800 port, then repeated, and it worked.
I should note that I do have one issue: I cannot daisy-chain my 2 WD drives. They will only work properly when connected each to their own port - one to the FW400, and the other to the FW800. I cannot daisy-chain other devices off them either, such as a video camera, or a FW memory card reader (I have not tried a hub).
Edit: Here's a story on the latest updates:

  • Mac book pro + external hard drive plus desktop with ethernet router combo

Can anyone advise - for or against / solutions that might be possible as I'm considering time capsule.
    Currently
Desktop = Mac Pro - 230GB hard drive no wireless card.
One ethernet port going to router into which my broadband is piped. Out of the router - ethernet to plug in lap top in other room (hubby not so found of wireless).
Back up = 500GB external formac drive (noisy and vibrates) connected via fire wire. All my photos and music go direct to the formac drive (are not on desktop or laptop).
I do backup of documents from desktop to the external hardrive manually.
I have a mac book pro which I access the internet by the the ethernet (but don't think I can file share because of the router which I think just pipes the internet to both computers).
*What I would like to do*
    1) Access documents from the desktop vire wireless when working on laptop.
    2) Continue to store photos and music without clogging up my desktop hard drive.
    3) Get a quieter external hard drive (been noisy since day 1)
    4) Easy backup of of photos and music (at the moment only one copy exists on hard drive which I am concerned about (other than DVD).
    5) Turn wireless off when not working on laptop - hubby concerned about privacy and I work from home so have confidential material I have to guarentee is secure.
Can any one point me to whether time capsule and or other bits would meet my needs?
    Thanks - Lou

    1) is doable I use that functionality Even from Pennsylvania to Michigan
    2) I use the TC as backup for my primary hard drive although I always use two back up hard drives for my primary. I use the Finder not Time Machine.
    3) The LaCie d2 or the quadra work fine with TC. They are quiet and sleep appropriately.
    4) is doable and related to your one.
    5) secure your router and wireless setup is not a problem.
You can also use the setup of the external to interact with ATV. Like streaming movies to ATV

  • MB Pro & External Hard Drive - Best format for Mac/Windows use?

My external hard drive is currently formatted as FAT 32. I need to use it between Mac and Windows. However, I have many files that are 4 GB or larger.
Should I reformat as HFS? Will that at least be readable on Windows?
I thank you in advance for any thoughts.

    There's no really good choice.
Regardless of the filesystem you choose, you will need additional software to read/write it on one of the operating systems. MacDrive for Windows will permit you to read/write HFS+ formatted volumes on Windows -- it's $50. MacFuse + NTFSng allows Mac OS X to read/write NTFS formatted drives -- it's free, but a little awkward.

  • Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

You can pickup any 1TB USB powered drive for about $100 at just about any local office supply store.
It comes formatted FAT32 (MSDOS) for reading by OS X and Windows PC's.
However if your files sizes are going to be larger than 4GB in size (like video tends to be) then your going to need to select the drive in OS X's Disk utility (in the Applicaitons > Utilities folder) and format the drive exFAT instead.
exFAT is a drive format that 10.6.5 and later Mac's, Windows Vista and 7 machines can read just fine. XP machines need a free exFAT drive install from Microsoft.
Do backup the 1TB to another 1TB drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or another backkup utility because 1TB is a lot of data to lose on a $100 drive.
I don't advise the "port powered" USB drive as these tend to have power issues and with 1TB of data on it, very risky. Use a powered drive if you can all help it.

  • OWC Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive - Share with Windows Machine?

    Hi,
Others on this discussion have recommended the OWC Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive. Dumb question: my live-in girlfriend has a Dell XP laptop, and I have a MacBook. If we purchased an OWC hard drive with both firewire and USB, can we both use the external hard drive?
    Thanks, David

You can certainly use their drives between a Mac and a PC. As mentioned, either format it FAT32 witht he 4GB file size restrictions or partition it.
You can also use a program called MacDrive. It give a Windows machine that ability to read and wtite to HFS+ partitions. I have used it and it works nicely.
There is a timed demo, so you can try it out and see if it meets your needs.

Oh ok, well that was what the test said prior to reformatting the hard drive. Now, it doesn't find any trouble no matter how many times I run it. That's what has me so confused, everything seems to check out and yet...I can't do anything, not even install the software!

  • Western Digital My Book 500GB External Hard Drive

    Hello,
Just wondering if anyone is using the Western Digital My Book 500GB External Hard Drive and how do you like it? A few people I know bought this one and say that they like it. One good thing is that it is already Mac compatible.
Any information on this would be great!
    Thanks,
    Simonne

Looks like it will work fine but I'd highly recommend you buy one that has both ext. FW and USB2 (as opposed to usb only).

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • External Hard Drive Maximum Size for HAP-Z1ES

You have no category for your new line of DSD players, and in particular, the Sony HAPZ-1ES.  You should get on this, because it sends the wrong message, mainly that you are not putting much effort into this new product, which is not exactly the message Sony should be sending.
It's clear that this is a good product, and one that many are going to be interested in, once they learn about it.  It's already beginning to create a lot of buz online, and people are asking a number of technical questions about it that are not answered in the current Sony manual for it.  In particular, no one seems to know what the maximum external hard drive can be for the HAP-Z1ES.  People have successfully formated a 2TB drive, but what about a 3TB drive or a 4TB drive.  In looking at the format instructions for the Sony format software (the HAPZ-1ES can only be formatted with Sony software), it doesn't say anything about this issue.  DSD files take up a lot of hard drive space. It would be useful for many to know if they can buy a 3TB or 4TB drive for the HAP-Z1
ES. I suggest someone from Sony help answer these questions for all the folks who are buying this excellent unit.

    Hi,
I have AIFF files, but have not copied them over yet. I have a 2tb harddrive installed and have had no problems. The questions I would ask are: I assume your trying the Sony format system on the HAP-Z1ES. Maybe you can take the drive and reformat it with your computer and then try re-formatting it with the Sony. You can also see your files on your computer network if the Sony is part of the network.

  • MacBook Pro/External Hard Drive/Windows PC

I have a MacBook Pro and a Windows desktop...and an external hard drive.  I want to load some music on the external hard drive using the MacBook and then copy from the external hard drive to the Windows desktop.  Is this possible?

ExFAT - A newer file format, supported in Mac OS X 10.6.5 or later.
Advantages: exFAT has many of the same advantages as FAT32 in that it's a disk format that offers interoperability between Macs and PCs. It has one big advantage over FAT32: exFAT supports file sizes larger than 4 GB, so if you have a need to move huge files between Macs and PCs, this is likely the format you'll want for your flash drive.
exFAT is supported by the following operating systems:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.5 or greater)
    OS X Lion
Windows XP SP2 or later (with an additional update for exFAT support)
    Windows Vista SP1 or later
    Windows 7
Disadvantages: As a relatively newer file system format, exFAT isn't supported in older versions of Mac OS X (anything prior to 10.6.5) or anything older than Windows XP SP2. If you won't be dealing with older Macs or PCs, this may not be a problem. Of greater issue is that most consumer electronics (cameras, camcorders, video game systems) don't support exFAT, either. If you need to transfer files between your Mac and one of these non-PC devices, you're almost certainly going to have to format your flash drive in FAT32 instead.

  • New to Macbook Pro, External hard drive question.

I've just made the swirch to an Apple Macbook Pro from a PC.  I've used the PC since the early 90's and all I know is Windows.  However I'm finding myself more at home in Lion.  My question is probably a simple one so I'll get to it.  I have a 1TB Seagate Mac/PC external usb powered hard drive that I've used on my PC for all my iTunes media, 95% of which was purchased from Apple (who the **** knows if that matters but information could be crucial and besides I saw someone else say that in a post, only he found his music, whatever that means, anyway....).  Now I have added all files to the library of my iTunes on the Mac while still running them from the external hard drive and everything transferd smothly (see not a complete idiot) but for some reason I can not write to the hard drive.  If I try to update an app, delete a fie, rename or otherwis change the file in itunes I get an error claiming I don't have permission to do so.  When I look at the drive itself, sure enough it says I may read only.  Now the drive was formatted and used on a Windows PC prior to today.  What do I need to do on the Mac end to make it read and writable (is that the right word?) so I can enjoy updating my apps or plain getting rid of some old things?  Thanks in advance for any help.
    New Mac User

Your external harddisk uses the NTFS file system which is common for Windows PCs.
Mac OSX can read from NTFS harddisks but cannot write to them.
For full access you need a third-party helper tool like the free NTFS-3G or Fuse4X or the commercial ones from Paragon or Tuxera NTFS for Mac.
In the long run and when you don't need a "Windows-PC-compatibility" of the external harddisk anymore you should consider reformating/repartioning the external harddisk using the Mac OSX native partition and file system formats. (GUID and MacOS Extended (Journaled)).
But such an action would delete everything that is on that external harddisk so it is not that easy.

  • New to MacBook Pro - External hard drive advice

I just ordered a MacBook Pro last night which will be my first mac computer and would appreciate any insight on external hard drives. Here are the specs for the MacBook:
    2.6Ghz Quad-core Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1 GB GDDR5 memory
    8 GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
750 GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
Right now, for my PC I have a WD My Passport Essential SE 1 TB Ultra Portable external hard drive. This drive works but I've had a few hiccups with it (although I can't tell if its the drive or the PC) and figured I should just start fresh with a new external hard drive for the new MacBook. In terms of my use, here's what I'm looking to be able to do with the hard drive:
would prefer something portable (although doesn't have to be)
would like to be able to insert old hard drive into mac, insert new hard drive, and transfer all files from old hard drive onto new hard drive without having to temporarily store on mac
i don't really use the hard drive to back up the computer, i use it more to store all my files (pics, videos, movies, word/excel/pdf, etc.) and only keep certain files on computer (i use another hard drive to back up this hard drive)
i'd also like something fast that would work well with the MacBook's specs
price wise, would defintely like to be under $300 if possible
Again, just looking for any advice anyone might have that would help me out in making a decision! Thanks!

Any brand name external drive will work.
