WD My Book VelociRaptor Duo Thunderbolt Enclosure replacement drives

Not really sure where to put this as it isn't entirely Mac specific but there is a lot of experienced and helpful people here so.....
I am considering purchasing a WD 2TB My Book VelociRaptor Duo Thunderbolt Desktop Hard Drive (WDBUWZ0020JBK-NESN) which will serve me well for the immediate future. However my question comes with regard to replacing these drives, within the enclosure, at a later date. I understand the Velociraptor drives are actually 2.5" drives in a 3.5" cooling frame/ice pack. If I'm not mistaken, the Velociraptor drives use "regular" SATA interfaces so the question I have is:
Are the 1TB Velociraptor drives (with the ice pack) exactly the same form factor as "regular" 3.5" drives and thus ENTIRELY interchangeable? i.e. Mounting holes, cable connections, height, etc.
Thank you for any guidance.

From Amazon:
User-serviceable - Want to replace a drive? Simply open the case and exchange the existing drive. If you fill up a drive, you can simply remove it and replace it with a fresh drive and begin saving even more of your creative life.
Q  It states that the drives can be replaced.  Do the replacement drives have to be VelociRaptors or can they be any 3.5" internal hard drive?
A:  I believe they can be any drive as they are extremely easy to replace.  Just looking at the drives they are standard 3.5 internal drives.
I have seen this mentioned before, being used for scratch.
I have also seen people use 2 x 1TB SSD Samsung 840 EVO (2 x $440) though not in this case (would be interesting though!)
And you might get the same level of performance from 2 x 4TB drives.

  • Best RAID configuration for combining external thunderbolt enclosures?

I'm looking at configuring two external Western Digital Thunderbolt Duo drive enclosures using Disk Utility's software RAID setup tool. Each enclosure houses two 2TB drives. I'm looking to get the performance of RAID 0 striping with the redundancy of RAID 1 mirroring. What I'm not sure of, and I hope someone can shed some light on, is how to combine the RAID sets to achieve my desired goal. As I see it, there are two possible ways to go about this.
The first would be to configure the master RAID set as mirrored, with the individual thunderbolt enclosures configured as striped sets. Example:
The second approach would be to configure the master RAID set as striped, with the individual thunderbolt enclosures configured as mirrored set. Example:
Can anyone tell me which is the better way to go about this? Are there advantages/disadvantages to either approach? Thanks for any insight you might have!

    Start here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID
see the heading Nested (hybrid) RAID
The issue with striped RAID is that loss of one drive is devastating. Lose one drive and you lose it ALL.
They advocate you make a striped set of Mirrored drives. One failure and you're fine, as long as you don't have another failure before you fix it.
NB> RAID is not Backup -- you still need a backup.

  • External USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt enclosure for Seagate 6 TB drive?

Any body found a USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt enclosure that works with the Seagate 6 TB ST6000NM0024 drive? Apparently the mounting screws are in a different place to accommodate extra platters.

The screws that changed or moved are the "bottom entry" screws directly adjacent to the platters. This makes mounting on a Mac Pro silver tower drive sled difficult, but many other kinds of drive mounts use the "side mount" screws, which should not be affected.
WD solution for this was to leave the bottom mount screws in the same place, but shorten the allowable screw penetration. For sled mounting, this means either shortening two of the existing screws, replacing the existing screws with shorter ones, or adding a washer under the screw heads.

Thank you, I have read that I could daisy chain the HD RAID enclosure on one of the thunderbolt ports with another monitor, if the monitor were at the end of the chain, but I do not know if the other port would still simultaneously support yet another external display at the same time.

  • Is it possible to connect a mac book pro via thunderbolt and a dvi switchbox (multiple computers) to a thunderbolt display?

    Hi,
I'm planning to buy a thunderbolt display.Since I have not only apple computers with a thunderbolt port I wonder if it's possible to connect my mac book pro via thunderbolt and a DVI switchbox via a "mini displayport to DVI connector" to the thunderbolt display at the same time. Thunderbolt is a bus architecture. Thus there must be an ingoing and an outgoing port on the display. The rearview of the display I've seen so far don't show this:
If this is not possible then I must question the market chances of this product. Seems as if the product marketing guys exaggerated the launch of the thunderbolt technology.

AHHH??!!!!!!  Was that your original question??   I assumed you were trying to output FROM your computer (MacBook Pro w/ Thunderbolt) to the new display and then OUT to be the video source to a DVI switcher.
    MB Pro w/TB ---> TB Display ---> mDP-to-DVI adapter ---> DVI switcher
So it seems as if it's not possible to use the thunderbolt display with the mini display port adapter to DVI you've mentioned.
I did not understand that you were trying to use other PC's into a switcher and then THAT Video source to connect INTO the TB display.   If THAT is what you're trying to do, then NO....  You can NOT use the new TB Display to be used to display "FROM" a DVI switcher (and also can NOT be used to display from other Non-TB-Apple computers).
I've also called apple. The statement was that one needs a computer with osx 10.6.x in order to connect the thunderbolt display. That makes it impossible to hook a windows pc or older mac to the new and shiny thunderbolt display.
I wonder why apple doesn't state this in their technical descriptions...?
    -ais-swiss
Actually, the state that information all over the Tech Specs on the Apple Store website.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC914LL/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Here are two different statements from that webpage:
So yes.... other NON-Apple PC's (or non-TB devices) do Not have the Thunderbolt technology (hardware/software) to be able to communicate with the TB display or other TB devices.

  • My Book Live Duo Remote Access

I currently have an iMac and use Time Machine to back up my desktop to a My Book Live Duo External Drive.
My Book Live is supposed to allow for remote access to files. When I click on WD2go app, I can see the public shares as well as the Time Machine Share. However, when I try to see the files in the Time Machine Share remotely, I don't have files that can be accessed.
I know the back up is successful because I can see the files on the external drive when I am on the desktop. Does Time Machine put the backup files in a certain format such that I can't see them remotely on my iphone or ipad.
I also have a Windows desktop that also backsup to My Book Live Duo. I use the WD Smarware to backup that desktop. Unlike the Time Machine backup, I have no problem see and accessing the files backed up through WD Smartware.
Has anyone else experienced this problem??

I'm seeing the same pattern; Updated my system to 02.43.10-048 (from 02.11.09-053) and got a message with just ??? in Event Title and Description and nothing in the event code. An hour later I get a message about temp returning to normal (event code 2003). Everything was fine for about 30 hours, then I got ??? messages every 30 minutes followed by an event code 2003 for about 4 hours (middle of the night, no activity on the drive) yesterday I started to get a series of these with a scattering of notices of successful firmware updates (and corresponding reboots) with no change in the firmware version. We turned off auto-update. Just adding data to the thread at this point, the system is at home and I'm in the office so I can't do any real investigation on it.

  • My Book Live Duo 02.43.10-048 overheating warning gone

Hi, I updated to the latest version ( http://community.wd.com/t5/My-Book-Live-Duo/New-Release-My-Book-Live-Duo-Firmware-Version-02-43-10-048-6-22/td-p/880844 ) and whereas before I received e-mails when the unit was overheating, now I don't. I noticed that the front LED was red and shut it down. No warning e-mail was sent and normally two or three e-mails should be sent warning about overheating before it reaches this stage. Warning e-mails are sent for other conditions (intermittent network or system restart) are sent properly so it's not a case of misconfiguration or e-mails suddenly not getting through. In the firmware version previous to this one the event title and event description had a set of question marks instead of proper descriptive text but at least it was sending something saying something was wrong, which turned out to be the overheating warning. This warning is necessary as I live in a hot climate, even rolling back to the previous imperfect warning would be useful to me. Is there any way to log in via SSH and do something like fixing or starting a temperature monitoring process? Thanks, Dan.

  • WD Book live duo, Probleme beim Kopieren (Fehler 59...), Firmware-Update nicht möglich

Seit eineinhalb Jahren benutze ich das WD Book duo
    Seriennummer WUZ234702481
    My Book Live Duo-Firmware
    Version:
    MyBookLiveDuo 02.43.03-022 : Core F/W
    Letztes Update:
    Mo 01 Apr 2013 19:02:17 CEST

  • Will a Thunderbolt external hard drive be able to boot the Thunderbolt MBP?

Are there Thunderbolt external hard drives available and will they be able to boot the Thunderbolt MBP?
    Thanks.

    Cadu 321
MMMM Why would you want to boot from a slow external drive instead of the on board SSD (Retina MBP) is the question.
My Tbolt externals WDs 8TB Duos only give roughly 1/4 (25% performance) compared to internal SSD, Externals are normally for backup operations and too slow for the amount of read/writes required for a BIg OS such as OS10.8, Max write speeds are determined by the donor disk, even when in 2x2 stripe in Raid 0 only clock about 500GB per hour ( any one getting over this please send screen shots for verifiaction and number of disks used in the array), bursts in smaller file are quicker.
Power PC if I remember correctly is not x86 compliant and running Snow leopard on a MBP retina is like running MS 3.11 on a gamers platform.
Various forums say that OS 10.8 WILL NOT boot from Tbolt running any Raid (0 1 5 6 or 10)
There is a backward and forward compatbitly issue with which way you are firing the data, put simply a tbolt drive with Firewire to Tbolt adapter cable is only as quick as the firewire and may not justify the cost. Also 2 machines = 2 boot partions to accomodate the different hardware inside each case.
You may be better of installing Paralells (Apple Store $100 including USB 3.0 Cable which is backward compat with USB 2.0) and running VM (Virtual Machines) using OS 10.8 on the Retina and using the older machines as displays. It boots windows linux ubuntu and more into VM without rebooting the machine and works seamlessly in the named OS's
    Hope this helps

  • Replace Drive XRAID (Raid5)

    Hello,
About 3 weeks ago one of our drive from Xraid failed (5 disks with raid 5) and only today i got the replacement drive (we ordered 4 for bad scenarios). My question remains to just replace the drive as the raid appears as degraded from the raid admin. In the apple manual (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/xserveraid_userguide.pdf) it says that cannot be replaced in degraded mode because I will loose data. I want to do a full backup first, but need to know all process to replace the new drive. This could not be done as hot spare because i need to change the drive's bay.
    Scenario:
    Mac OS X Server 10.6.8
2,8 Ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    6GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB DIMM
Can anyone help me out? TY

I wish I'd seen your post earlier.
There's no issue removing a failed disk from the enclosure and installing a new one.
I assume what you're referring to is the statement from page 49 of the manual:
Important If your drive module belongs to an unprotected RAID set or a degraded RAID set, you will lose data if you remove the drive.
In my opinion, this is an unsual case of incorrect data in the documentation, or at least it's poorly written.
Yes, if the disk is part of an unprotected RAID set (e.g. RAID 0) then removing a disk is a bad idea.
Yes, if you remove an ACTIVE disk from an degraded RAID set (e.g. a WORKING disk in a mirror or RAID 5 array) then you'll lose data.
However, this disk has failed. It's already been removed from the active array, therefore it doesn't meet either of this criteria. It's not part of any array, so it's 100% safe to remove.
If you think about it, it's kind of limiting if you can't remove any drive from the enclosure, even if it's failed. Kind of negates the point of hot-swappable drive bays.

  • I have Logic on my iMac and want to install it on my new mac book but my mac book doesn't have a dvd drive. I tried to download the upgrade but it looks for an older version. How do I get Logic on the Mac book ?

I would like to install logic on my new mac book but there is no dvd drive. I tried to downlaod the upgrade but that didn't work. How do I download it for the first time?
    Thanks!

You can only use the App Store version to reinstall on your new Mac if you bought Logic via the App Store in the first place.... and then it will appear under the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store App so long as you are signed in using the same Apple ID you used to purchase Logic via the App store in the first place.
If you bought the DVD edition of Logic Studio then you must initially install using those original DVDs to begin with and then update to the latest version of your version of Logic via software updates.
No DVD drive? Buy an external one.. Amazon do a very cheap basic one that works well..
    or...
Use Remote Disk if you still have your older Mac which has a built in DVD drive...
