WD My Passport 2TB: tips, tricks & gotchas please?

I confess. I am weak. Prone to temptation. Costco had them on special. Couldn't resist. So the computer bag has a new denizen. A Western Digital My Passport 2TB buspowered drive. Too cute to even begin to describe it humming in your hand. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=640
Now that I have succumbed, come the questions:
What's your personal experience with the drive? Positive/negative experiences?
Which is better, use the included Smartware backup software, or OS X's own Time Machine (besides a clone in a separate partition)?
Is the onboard encryption really trustworthy and secure? Not that I need to keep the CIA at bay, but thieves for this gear abound.

Au contraire, mon ami, it is you who are uninformed as to the official nomenclature. I quote a snipped portion of the corresponding options screen on the Store:
And of course, nowadays only the survivors can carry the moniker. Dinosaurs remain in the museum.

  • Did you know-? Animation Tips & Tricks

Did you  know that you can animate any object you create in Project ROME – and  that it's easy to do too? Just follow these quick steps (and be sure to  have your timeline showing – View > Show Timeline):
1.Select the object you want to animate
2.Click on the stop watch in the upper left of the timeline
3.Drag the top arrow within the timeline to indicate how long you want the animation to talk place (e.g., 10 seconds)
    4.Animate!
You can drag the selected object to create an animation path, change the object's color or even transparency. Check out this latest video on more about creating animation: http://bit.ly/9m4ug4. Let us know how this works for you and if you have any suggestions or questions along the way!

  • Elgato EyeTV Hybrid tips & tricks

I didnt know where else to put this so im posting this here. I'm looking for any tips & tricks or whatever you want to call it with the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid for Mac. Reason this being is because im using an Xbox 360 with this and i feel my experience could be much better, with quality and responce time.
I know all the Converting/Encoding whichever is all being done by the iMac so i suppose id have to live with the response time but is there anything i can do to the settings for quality? Anything you want to suggest please do, id be happy to try it and give feedback.
    Thanks

There is no interface with the Eyetv to the Dish receiver that would permit channels to return. Your Eyetv is only as good as the channel the reciever is set to. In other words, your Eyetv will retrieve any channels that are not regulated by a reciever to interpolate them, ie: "Over the air" and/or a "straight cable connection" without a set top box. Whether it be a Dish network or a local cable company, any circumstance of a set top box will not be compatible with Eyetv for the lack of it's abilty to change the channels on that box. The only circumstance I have ever seen is when a viewing/recording device has an IR blaster that transmits the channel selection to that set top box and changes the channels much the same as you would with a remote. That being said, there is still the issue of that particular device knowing the IR codes to your particular box.
Your Eyetv is good for "Over the Air" and/or a straight Cable coax connection only. Sorry.

  • Overclocking the i7 in Tips & Tricks

Harm Millaard, the hardware guru from the PrPro forum has just posted a LINK to his overclocking the i7 guide, in the Tips & Tricks sub-forum.
If you're considering doing this, you might want to give it a read.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

My i7 rig is with a socket 1156 board, an Asus P7P55D mobo, and an 860 CPU. I know the Corsair DDR3 memory @ its stock 1.65v simply doesn't run at 1600mhz like it says on its box - 1333mhz seems to be its stability wall.
I upgraded my Q6600 and Asus P5B deluxe rig because so many people said to never consider overclocking on an editing rig. Was that over-cautious advice?

  • Business Workplace - "Tips & Tricks"

I've just noticed a very, very cool feature in Business Workplace. When you go to your Inbox, and you hover over "Tips & Tricks," something appears, a bit like a Windows tooltip, except far more useful and far less annoying.
Does anyone know how I can get such a feature into an ABAP programme I write myself? It looks like it should be easy - probably something like set a property on an object and watch it happen. But I can't work it out, I think I must be looking in the wrong place...

    Hi Robert,
The Preview Pane utilizes HTML controls. A new item for the "Tips & Tricks" is selected every time you click on a different workitem or deadline message. Function module SIN_WI_PREVIEW_TIPS gets the tip and builds the HTML.

  • Tips & Tricks to manage time to contribute in SCN

    Hi SCN Mates,
The question of managing time to contribute in SCN and be in the top list of contributors is always a challenge, I wonder how other guys are managing it along with project work and personal life.
Through this thread I would like to ask all top contributors to share few tips on how do you manage your time to contribute in SCN and be in top?
I know with dedication and knowledge, at same time everyone will have their office work at priority after family/personal time.
Also contributing for an hour daily is also not possible because you never know whether you get ideas within an hour ;-).
Anyway, share your tips & tricks...
    Thanks,
    Umashanakr

People who become Top Contributors fall into two main categories
Category 1 - There is no need to know anything about SAP at all, but since they are SAP professionals at the end of the day, they know enough to get points. They spend all their time on SCN, Must follow every single member of HCL. Must go to each blog and like it ,and write "thank you". They  read every question posted on the forum, whether they know anything about it or not, and reply to it. They have excellent google skills, so they google the answer and post links in reply to every question. They could vary their approach by becoming active in Coffee Corner as well. Soon they will have million points and be a top contributor.
Unfortunately, this method is not for those who have family/work/other commitments which are more important.
Category 2 - These people have built up a tremendous amount of knowledge after years of practising in the business. They are genuine experts. They do not come into SCN with the sheer intent of accumulating points. However, when they do come in, and see fit to respond to a post, it is invariably the correct answer or  very helpful, that they get marked accordingly. These people post thoughtful blogs or comments or documents or discussions, which are useful and appreciated by the community and they get marked accordingly. Sooner or later, without really trying, but by simply practising their profession, these people accumulate enough points to become Top Contributors.
These people do not have a set strategy intended to accumulate points, but they do have a set strategy of being good and knowledgeable at their job. They manage their work/life balance in a way that suits them to achive this goal.
I am afraid there is no fixed way to achieve lofty goals with little or no effort.
There is a 3rd category, who are pretty decent in their knowledge and sporadically answer questions when they feel like, and who randomly get points for their responses, and they will never become top contributors, however, they are not too worried about it, and they do get to spend time with their families/other interests. This is a technicality that need not detain us.
    YMMV
    Hope this helps.

Trying to copy ANY file from my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive spins for 45 minutes then fails. I hate this computer and WISH I never would have wasted my money. Any ideas? WD My Passport 2TB Drive, had to buy a program to make the POS read files. Copies that would take seconds from a Windows based machine never complete. I have to close the transfer or shut off the machine half the time. Worst computer I have EVER owned, crashes non-stop, constantly freezes, and seems like EVERY operation is more complicated with this thing. Literally, my 1997 Compaq was FAR MORE reliable and user friendly.

This is one of the messages I keep getting; The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in -- File Whatever -- can’t be read or written.(Error code -36)
I have copied things to the hard drive in the past, but it has always been incredibly slow, and now just seems to freeze and fail

    Greetings Experts!
I am searching for information and/or documentation in regards to tips, tricks, lessons learned, and "steps to take" while upgrading to ECC 6.0 (from 4.6c, to be specific).
We have the install guides, and I'm currently looking at the ERP Solution browser to discern the differences between the two releases... however, we're in need of information on specific actions or things to look for after the technical upgrade. I am having trouble finding any SAP documentation of this kind.
Links to SAP documentation are highly desired. Personal documentation in this regard would be highly appreciated as well! My e-mail address is in my profile.
    Many, many thanks in advance!

  • Library Performance Discussion - Tips & Tricks?

Over the years, my iTunes library (mp3s-only) has amassed to staggering 1.25Tb. Inevitably, I running into severe performance issues, where selecting songs, searching for songs, tagging and streaming to AirTunes has become a complete pain. My current set-up: all the songs on a 2Tb, FW800 drive hooked up directly into my 2009 MBP
I wanted to start this topic to aggregate tips and tricks on how to deal with such libraries and what are the best set-up to squeeze out a decent performance.
To start off with some questions:
    1) Would a RAID set up work?
    2) Is the ‘once and for all’ solution a Mac Pro, 8-core, 32Gb RAM with a 4Tb Raid drive?
    3) What are the options available for external storage and decent iTunes performance?
    4) Are there ‘library file’ tweaks possible?
    5) Options to turn off in iTunes that use computing power?
    6) Where does the ‘spinning rainbow ‘come from?
    Thanks in advance!!

i hear you. my library is now in excess of 1.3 TB
Inevitably, I running into severe performance issues,
luckily, i am not having any performance issues
My current set-up: all the songs on a 2Tb, FW800 drive hooked up directly into my 2009 MBP
i use two of these drives (one as main, the other as backup). these drives are very fast and extremely quiet. the main drive is hanging off a *standard config* mini (2009).
I wanted to start this topic to aggregate tips and tricks on how to deal with such libraries and what are the best set-up to squeeze out a decent performance.
To start off with some questions:
    1) Would a RAID set up work?
can't comment on that. i am very happy with the performance of the LaCie.
    2) Is the ‘once and for all’ solution a Mac Pro, 8-core, 32Gb RAM with a 4Tb Raid drive?
i don't think you need such a machine - though i'd love to have one myself
    3) What are the options available for external storage and decent iTunes performance?
    see above.
    4) Are there ‘library file’ tweaks possible?
    unnecessary, IMHO.
    5) Options to turn off in iTunes that use computing power?
none really, AFAIK. what does +activity monitor+ says when these problems occur ?
    6) Where does the ‘spinning rainbow ‘come from?
something else on your machine is not +playing game+.
i would start with creating a (temporary) new admin account, logging into that, and check if the performance issues persist. you may have to populate iTunes on the temporary account with a few tunes.
reinstalling iTunes is another option (this will not touch your music or iTunes library files). click here for instructions.
also, when was the last time you ran a +verify disk+ using disk utility ? have your repaired permissions ? what's the size of your startup disk and how much space is left ?

  • Tips&Tricks How to use Final Cut and Color !

    Hello ,
Final Cut - Color - Back to Final Cut
After many days of trying to get this combination working I have found a non-Color-Final Cut way :
1)After you final cut picture edit is locked you have to clean as much as possible the timeline . That means you will have to stick all your image clips to a sigle video timeline and remove all attributes from each clip . Delete all empty video tracks and audio tracks .
Make sure you don't have any gaps in the timeline .
All clips should have the same compression type and frame rates .
2)Send it to Color , grade all the scenes and render it out .
3)Go in finder to the render folder and create an automator work flow adding as source the render folder from color.
Add the find finder option and set it up to look after .mov files .
Add a move finder option and move all the .mov files from Render Color Folder to a new empty folder .
Having done this you should have all the files from the render color folder moved to a new folder .
4)Go back in Final Cut drag&drop all the clips from that new folder on a new timeline , go ahead and check if the new timeline is identical with the old one .
Copy and paste all the attributes from the old sequence to the one from color and re-render in Final Cut . That's it you should be able now to put it back on a tape as a master movie.
In my case Color 1.02 and Final Cut 6.02 I couldn't get the material out from color using another way .
Please post your detailed work flow here and also post if you find this post useful and/or bugs you find about this workflow .
I hope Apple will fix this issue in their next update .

I use external drives as backup. But I don't trust them. And in case of fire or what ever...It is of no use...
But I agree on your comment about DropBox. It would have been the perfect solution though.
    What else is there?
I have a 2TB HD but these projects are huge and still growing - so I have to move my projects to several external drives. So maybe I should just work directly from external drives and skip the partition of the computers main drive? I am thinking of the disadvantage of reducing the total storage of the disk.

  • [Tips & Tricks] Beginners guide to Bloodborne

There is no doubt Bloodborne will be a difficult game. But do not fear, it's not unbeatable and as long as we stand together as a community we will manage it!
Let's use this guide to help all the beginners and newbies, especially those who have never played a Demon Souls or Dark Souls game.
We will collect all your tips and add them to the:
    *BEGINNERS GUIDE*
    To BLOODBORNE
#1 Learn how to parry by firing your gun at the right moment! - @LordRoss &
This can not be stressed enough. It is the most important skill to master if you wish to boss this game so it needs to reiteration. A well-timed parry will open up your opponent for a vicious riposte. This comes in most handy against large opponents who you can take out with very few killer blows rather than chipping away at his health with pin-pricks.
    #2 Learn to chain attacks.
Due to the new trick weapon system, where each weapon has two functions, you can now chain moves in a way you never could in any Souls game. When you press L1 your weapon will switch from one combat style to another, usually from a quick, short-range attack to a slow, long-range attack.
The thing is if you press L1 while in the middle of a combo the transition from one style to another itself becomes an attack which will link one style to another. Try start off with two, short range R1 (weak) attacks, press L1 to switch style, adding damage, and follow through into a long-range R2 (strong) attack.
Remember that on two-handed and dual-wield styles R2, your usual button for firing your gun, now also becomes an attack instead of that button becoming idle.
#3 Charge attacks to drop enemies from behind. - JynXten
In the Souls games back-stabbing was a simple matter of getting behind the enemy and stabbing him in the back. Now you need to charge your attack by holding R2 for a couple of seconds 'til your weapon gives off a glint at which point you let go to deliver a powerful blow which will drop your enemy to his knees so you can ram your blade between his shoulder blades.
Press forward lightly on the left stick to sneak up on opponents.
