WD Mybook Live wont use Time Machine

Hi All.
First Post on this Forum, as I am new to Apple's. Just purchased a shiny new Imac as the new family computer.
I have also purchased a Mybook Live NAS drive (3TB) for backing up family Photo's etc.
I have updated the firmware of the drive, but that is about it.
I can see the drive ion the Network, and can copy files to the relavent folders. The drive is also visible on my WIn 7 Laptop.
I am also able to see another Network drive My Book-Backup), which i am unable to access.
When using TIme Machine, i can only select the My Book Backup Drive. the program then starts and finds the drive noting it is 3TB in size. Time Machine them seems to hang and after 10-15 Minutes gives the folloing msg
"Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup due to a network problem." after some 5 10 Minutes of stating it states that it is unable to access the drive"
I have searched the wb high and low but can=t seem to resolve the problem. I have noted people creating a User on the drive - (WD_BACKUP) with a pasword of BACKUP).
This does not seem to work either giving me the same error, as if i use "Guest" login.....
Any ideas as I would like to be able to use the Time Machine functionality.

Upgraded to Mavericks yesterday. Seems to have gone well except for one thing. My computer will not recognized my WD MyBook Live 3T and thus Time Machine will not work with it. My wife's MacBook Pro is still running 10.6.8 and her computer is still working properly and doing back ups. Called Western Digital Tech support and Apple Tech Support. Not much helpl there. I attempted to download and use the newest sofware (during Mavericks installation I did get a warning that the old WD software was not supported). However, one of the first steps is getting the software to scan for the backup drive. No dice. The computer is not recognizing its existence at all in any place you might look. So I am stuck and frustrated at this point. I have plugged and unplugged things. The MyBook Live is hooked up directly by ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme router. My computer is hooked up by ethernet cable to the router and my wife's laptop uses the WiFi connection. Apple Tech suggested a direct hookup to my computer. My computer still would not recognize it.

When i upgraded from LION to MOUNTAIN LION it made NO difference at all to my MyBook Live !!!
reading the original post again and again, do you in fact have two My Book Live units, an old one and a new one ?

I have a macbook retina with a partition of windows 7 and Yosemite. When I use time machine in Yosemite it wont recognise the macintosh HD, but it recognises the windows hd ( bootcamp). Does anybody know why ?

Can't use time machine due to corruptness even after reinstalling snow lepoard how to fix?

Yes, someone stole my original apple id in 2009. Now i bought another iphone in late 2012 , Created another apple id due to Apple not being able to help me access my original apple id. Which now since 2 months ago someone or company, or bank stole my second apple id. My iphone 4s with Sprint has no celluar connection supossedly due to no internet that is what sprint said but I looked it up on apple and it stated that there is a cellluar block on my iphone4s.
So I guess I will have to go in person to Sprint so they can explain that to me and why I was lied to on the phone earlier. Back to my 2nd stolen apple id that I registered my macbook,airport express router, and iphone4s and apple TV. So who ever stole this apple id obviously took over all my mac products I had registered to it. Enough about that back to trying to use time machine....Everytime i do, my macbook just starts acting all screwed up. I bought a WD external drive for Mac but I believe someone must have claimed it too. Since there is 75gb on it that I can't access. Kind of like my Macbook stating I can't save or have access to the Root . That is another thing after reinstalling snow lepoard which works great until I update it. Which is a problem because everytime I update it to 10.6.8 All the permissions are changed the graphics look horrible and I get redirected so bad its not funny. The email account is a joke. Also I notice my stationary for email is in Spanish not sure why and on Iworks the document samples are also in spanish. Now I dont speak any other language except ENGLISH AND HAVE LIVED IN UNITEDSTATES MY ENTIRE LIFE. But my internet provider Fibrant which swears they are local shows it is in the UK also when i try to access my email for that account it states it is not safe , certificate is expired and someone might be trying to impersonate my server. Needless to say it is getting old. I had this same problem with Timewarner and Att except att would just remove my ethernet driver then laugh when i would call and ask what the problem was. Then later I find out when I had DSL that somehow the phone number they had listed was change to being a digit off from my DSL account which again they laughed and thought it was funny. Enough about that. I need to know how to get access to my Apple id. I gave up on the first one but the second one I did have access to until I registered all my apple products. What is up with every thing I have with a usb port being corrupt. I have also notice anywhere in town where I live my phone is English until I come home it is arabic,hebrew , spanish any language except English. Shouldn't I be safer in my home??????????????? But I am not I am safer in town or anywhere but my home. EVerything states international in my home and this has been going on since 2009.....No one can tell me why. My power from Duke reads that OTHER Is costing me the most $$ every month what ????? This is a joke. But yet no one can tell me why or how to fix the problem. Back to my iphone 4s problem. My icloud email account gets alot of spam starting about 2 months ago and I can't stop it. I try to foward it to Spam @ me but it hasn't helped.My iphone can only connect to the internet with wifi. Sprint swears that there is not a block but according to apple there is.

I won't to connect my iphone to itunes to try to restore it but it states I have to update it to 10.6.8. When I do that my computer is alot worse off. I actually can't even use a printer in my home thats the funny thing. When I try to connect one when I used windows it stated I had no rights to it and couldn't use it. Since I switch to Mac not much better. When I try to print a test page it is all crooked and too small of half off the page. So it is upsetting that I can't use a printer but something keeps turning all my electronics into printers. If anyone knows how to fix this problem that would be great or to stop all this international stuff going on in my home that would be wonderful. I try to buy brand new pcs but soon as I start them up something had already taken over. This is with nothing electronic in my home on. Turn everything that a power switch off or unplugged it. Still I lost rights and access to anything in my home. Now if I am away from my home and try to use one of my laptops they look completely different and almost usable. Unfortunately I can't afford to move. I thought about it but I am still in bankruptcy and don't have the money. In the last 4 years I have not been able to reinstall in backups that I have created. You don't know how many times I wish I had never backed my iphone 4s to my Macbook. Right after I could not log into it. Even used the disk to reset the password nope still couldn't log into it. Try to type the formula for resetting the password and nope it didn't work either.
Any suggestions would be appreciated---Need to gain access to my apple Id that would be a great start

Using Time Machine to backup a production file server

Does anyone have any recommendations for using Time Machine to back up a production file server? Right now we have an Xserve G5 with two internal 750GB drives in a RAID1 as our main file share to about 25 users, and a large external FW800 Guardian MAXimus drive to hold our backups. Our current backup system is a custom-written version of Mike Rubel's backup system -- http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ -- incremental backups done with rsync and cp with hardlinks exec'd via crontab, which seems to be very similar to what Time Machine does. Unfortunately, I've been finding it difficult to find any tech specs on Time Machine as far as:
* CPU and IO priority - This is a production file server, so I'd prefer to keep this from sucking power performance from the users. Just how much CPU, and more importantly IO, should I expect it to eat?
* How often it does a backup - The best answer I've found is "always", but I wanted to know if there was a more concrete response for this. Does the system hook into the kernel to see whenever a file gets written out so it doesn't have to continually scan the entire drive?
* Command line restoration - Are there any good utilities for recovering via SSH, or am I going to have to VNC to the server and do the BS magic flying screen just to restore a file?

For mine I have 3x500GB drives in the server, two are RAID mirror and the third is time machine backup. I just turned on time machine in system preferences and set the backup drive, and after an hour it made the first backup.
Seems to work perfectly although I have heard a couple of rumours that the mail server causes the backup to grow forever, but havnt checked this. Im staging another machine, so perhaps will try this to make sure!
I am expecting the backup will only be useful to a system administrator, and am not sure how a user logged into a shared directory account (i.e 'roaming profile') would access the backup, and somehow suspect they wont be able to just seamlessly use the slick interface as if the backup were their own.
On a 2x2Ghz G5 it didnt seem to use the full load on either the CPU or the disk the first time it was run (copied at about 9MB/sec throughout). The incremental backups are very fast, and are often completed before I realise they have started. I gather it uses Apple's own spotlight API to find changed files, so isnt like an rsync which scans entire volumes. Worth checking the exclusion filters though, no point backing up any large cache/log files you may be storing.

HT201250 Can I use Time Machine to backup a LaCie Hard Drive connected to an Airport Extreme onto a My Book that is connected directly to a Mac Mini?

I have a LaCie 2TB hard drive connected to a Airport Extreme Base Station. I also have a 1TB MyBook connected to a Mac Mini. My question is can you backup selected files (photos) from the LaCie drive to the MyBook drive using Time Machine, or any other software? If it will cost a fortune, I guess I can always just copy the newer files over.

The external drive where my iPhoto library is located has three partitions - Time Machine Backup, Pictures (where the iPhoto library is located) and SuperDuper Bootable Clone.
When you say 'Remove the external drive from the list of items set to be excluded from the backup, and then add everything else on it' - am I correct in thinking that I should remove Pictures partition from the items to be excluded but leave the Time Machine Backup and SuperDuper Bootable Clone as excluded items?
On my 2TB external drive (the one I'm backing up to) there are 5 partitions - Time Machine Backup, SuperDuper Clone, Pictures, Photo Archive and Document Archive. The Time Machine Backup is 700GB of which I still have 473GB available - when I include the Pictures folder that contains the iPhoto library that will use up another 148GB but I think there's still plenty of room to use it.
When you say if the partition contain the iPhoto library isn't dedicated to it it may be easier to create one which is, the only item I have on the Pictures volume is the iPhoto library so I think that it's dedicated to it. I was going to add images from the Pictures folder on my MacBook Pro but haven't done so at this stage so I won't do so. It wouldn't matter though, would it, if I copied the images from the Pictures folder on my MBP to the 'Photo Archive' partition of the EHD?

Using time machine as backup AND external hard drive?

So I got the Time Machine so I could use it as a wireless external hard drive. Thought my computer just crashed and realized i realllly need a backup.... is there any way that I could back up my computer on it WITHOUT erasing my 100,000's of photos on the time capsule? Please be POSITIVE they wont erase.

As posted earlier, your best bet for that is a larger internal HD.

If you're going to have a backup of your system, you might as well use Time Machine. It's most recent backup is, in effect, a full backup of everything. If you let it do it's hourly backups, you'll never lose more than an hour of data.

How do I back up Wireless Hard Drive using Time Machine

I have a MacBook Pro and I'm running OSX Lion.
I'm having trouble setting up time machine to back up two USB external hard drives (named Portable iTunes and Portable iPhoto) connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station. I have a time capsule with a 3TB USB WD MyBook external hard drive that I'm using as the Time Machine Hard Drive.
Portable iTunes, Portable, iPhoto and MyBook are wirelessly mounted to my desktop.
Will someone please explain how I can set up MyBook to wirelessly back up the two portable drives using Time Machine?

Sorry, but Time Machine can only backup a hard drive that is connected directly to your Mac using USB or Firewire.

Should I upgrade to Mac OS X v10.7 before I use Time Machine for the first time?

I bought a macbook pro in 2008. I recently purchased an external hard drive and I can't decide what's the best option:
1. Use Time Machine using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 ?
2. Upgrade to Lion before I use Time Machine (first time)
3. Or just drag my photos and music manually (those are the only things I need to back up)

Before I use Time Machine

I have a quick question that maybe one of you could answer.
I have an external HD, and before I did a clean install, I backed everything up but dragging and dropping my files in my HD to my external HD. Now, after doing a clean install with Leopard, I want to transfer over some thins, mainly my address book.
When I try dragging the application to my desktop, it says it cant launch. Am I screwed? Am I doing something wrong?

Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. Apps won't launch. Help?

Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. I get an error when I try to launch a program on the new computer (150:30). After contacting live chat about the issue and providing all serial numbers etc. I was directed to a download. The download was a .dmg file that my computer did not recognize. It was suggested that I ask the experts on the forum how to resolve the issue. I have all the discs and serial numbers but the new macbook pro doesn't take discs (I guess they think all apps are downloadable now). Any ideas?

My best idea is to take a LARGE USB memory stick to a friend with a DVD drive and copy your DVD over to the USB memory stick

How do I keep comp on while using Time Machine, iTunes etc..?

I want to know how to put the settings on my computer not to shut off. I have gone to the Energy Saver icon and made the changes so that it never shuts off and after about 15 minutes it will still turn off.
I want this setting for when im backing up my comp using Time Machine and also when I listen to music. I dont want to have to be next to the computer and have to hit a button or move the mouse so that it wont turn off.
Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated.
p.s. -- i have a black macbook from 2007 if that matters.

As you can see I have the settings to NEVER and after 15-`6 minutes it goes to the sign in page anyway

Recovering Lion using Time Machine

Hello!
I have upgraded to Lion 1 day after Apple released it. Everything is OK. But I have a problem with finding and accessing the recovery partition
I tried OPTION key on start up, it didn't work, they only partitions I see are Macintosh HD and Windows.
Also, I tried COMMAND+R, it didn't work either. Lion is starting normally and when the log on window appears, "R"s are added to the Password area.
I just want to be sure that I am safe incase something went wrong with my Mac, I need a solution.
Like in Snow Leopard, I use Time Machine on frequent basis.
The question is, can I use the Snow Leopard Disk that came with my MacBook to recover Lion? or I need the Recovery Partition?

No, if you use a Snow Leopard disc, the RP will not be created. That's why you need to re-download Lion.
No I said its OK if the Recovery Partition wont be created, I just need a way to recovery my Mac OS, even if its an external source, not a partition inside my Mac.
Some say you must press and hold Option first. (I can't test that myself, since I got Lion via the beta program.)

Yes it seems the site was down temporarily. Although no message appeared, I think the problem is with my Mac having another partition inaddition to Mac and BootCamp, a FAT Partition.
Last time, BootCamp Assistant couldn't let me create a BootCamp Partition because I have a FAT Partition. I ended up removing the FAT, and creating it after BootCamp was installed.
It seems also this time Lion couldn't create a recovery partition because of FAT partition.

Using Time Machine with My Book World on a second computer

I've just installed a 2TB My Book World on my wireless network and am able to use Time Machine to backup my Macbook Pro, using the log-on WD_Backup but I don't know how to backup my wife's Powerbook, as this seems to be the only log-on name accepted by the My Book World when using Time Machine.
Should I enter the same log-on details in Time Machine on her computer and will this create separate backups for each computer (as I'm worried that the same user name might mean it will overwrite my backup)
Any help or advice most appreciated, as if this is the case, I assume that Time Machine backups will just have to be set at different times for each computer on our network

You need to use the same log-in/password details with all computers and Time Machine will sort it out (or at least it has with my MyBook World). Apparently it helps to give the MBW a static IP address, which you do by logging into the browser interface and changing the option from DCHP to Static. Otherwise I've read that Time Machine can struggle if the IP address of the MBW changes.

especially the bits about the different potential user names/passwords to try if you keep getting an error message when setting up Time Machine.
I had trouble setting it up, but once I'd got it working (to date) Time Machine has worked like a dream, so I wouldn't believe all the criticisms you might find, as I think that so long as your MBW has the latest firmware, Western Digital seem to have got their act together to make it Mac friendly.
You can also check if you need a firmware update via the browser interface - you just need to put the address of the MBW into your browser and I'm sure there must be other ways of finding it, but personally I log into my router via my browser (eg. http://192.168.0.1 for Netgear routers) and click on "attached devices" to find out the allocated IP (192.168.0.??). Once you put this into your browser you will be offered the set-up process for the MBW.
Hope this helps. From my point of view I can only advise you to persevere, as once you get it sorted with Time Machine, it's definitely worth it

How can I replace just the corrupt page(s) in the domain file of iWeb using Time Machine?

I back up with Time Machine and have an extensive elaborate website I created in iWeb '09 over a couple months and publish to a local folder and then upload to my server, but in the last few days I notice certain pages (that I haven't even worked on or touched) somehow become corrupted or "cross-contaminated" with elements and images from other pages. Once I see they are corrupt I make sure not to publish them (if the current published versions are the correct, non-corrupt versions) or if they did get published I can use Time Machine to retrieve the .html file and page files folder for that specific page and replace it in my published folder/server so it shows correctly on the Web. However, that does not replace the corrupted page(s) you see and work with when you launch iWeb and try to edit or continue working on that page.
I am confused as to how I go to the package contents of the domain file and replace just that page with a previous version from time machine. I don't want to replace the entire domain file because I have new changes I made to other pages even in the past hours. How can I keep the good pages and just get earlier, non-corrupted versions of the corrupt page(s)? I know it's not as easy as with the published site folder where you can just replace the page's .html file and folder, but I don't want to have to re-create the corrupted page(s) from scratch or have to replace it with the last non-corrupted domain file and then have to redo all my recent changes to new pages I made before discovering the corrupt page(s). Thanks for your help as now I can't make changes to the page(s) within iWeb itself.

Thanks for the response, Wyodor. I don't know what that is, but I'll have a look. Is it an alternative to iWeb or a way to transfer pre-existing iWeb sites? When you say merge domain files, is that like so multiple copies of the same site show up then you can pick and choose the non-corrupted pages and group them then delete the corrupted ones? I am on Snow Leopard with no plans or need to upgrade anytime soon.
And yes, I will read your links but just wanted to ask those questions. Maybe they'll answer my questions, maybe not.
I was able to discern that within the domain file is a domain folder with all the site folders, each with their own page ".gz" files which expand into ".xml" files. I was trying to figure out if you could simply drag the corrupt pages out that way and replace them with backup copies that are still good. I am having trouble discerning which pages are which as they all have random names like site-page-30F175E3-AE33-4F10-A490-1A096D9B185B.xml and although I expanded and opened each in Text Wrangler, I still couldn't discern which were which for sure, and trial and error proved cumbersome. Also, I did notice some of the later corrupted domain files had one or two more pages than the site itself has, so not sure how they got added or duplicated or what.
Again, I'll look at your links, but do you know about swapping out individual page .xml files this way within the domain file?
