WD MyBook Live

I noticed Western Digitial have just launched a new NAS in 1 and 2 TB flavours. Their website (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=872) claims:
"Compatible with Apple Time Machine - Mac computer users can utilize all the features of Apple Time Machine backup software to protect their data. Back up all your Macs wirelessly to one location over your WiFi network."
I've never had much luck using TimeMachine over a network to a NAS (a DNS-323). I had to modify an OS setting to get it to see network shares and then it would just stop working after a while. I was trying to back-up a Mac Mini and my MacBook to it and from forum surfing at the time there seemed to be some sort of problem using a non-TimeCapsule NAS for multiple machine's TimeMachine backups so I pretty much gave up and started using locally attached USB drives instead (as I felt the price of the TimeCapsule was too high for me).
However this announcement by WD has got me interested again. Does anyone know if this is compatible in the same way my DNS-323 was (after an OS hack to get Timemachine to see it) and then could be just as flaky or is this actually a real possibly replacement for a TimeCapsule>?
I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts.
Rich

I'm skeptical of all NAS devices with Time Machine. Some that worked reasonably well with Leopard had to be updated to work with Snow Leopard, so folks were out of luck for weeks or months in some cases.
The setup instructions for this one involve installing WD software on your Mac, and when configuring Time Machine, assigning a password.
The problem with that may be, when your internal HD fails or has to be erased, you may not be able to do a full system restore. That doesn't run from any version of OSX; you must boot up from a Snow Leopard Install disc to use the Installer utility there, and there's no way to install WDs software on it. I don't know how you'd establish contact with the WD to give it a password, either.
They do have instructions for setting-up and viewing TM backups, and a bit on restoring selected items, but nothing I could find on doing a full system restore.
See the full system restore procedure in #14 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You'd probably have to install OSX, set up a temporary user account +*different from any on your backups,+* do the WD setup again, then use +Migration Assistant+ to transfer everything else. (See #19 in the FAQ.) That usually works well, but some complex 3rd-party apps don't always transfer completely, and have to be reinstalled from the original discs. You might also have to re-enter some purchase keys, serial numbers, etc.
At the very least, I'd be inclined to ask WD how a full system restore is done.
Since you have a MacMini, your best bet may be to connect a good external HD to it. Partition it and back the Mini up to one partition directly, and the MacBook to the other partition over your network via sharing. See #22 in the FAQ.

  • Has anyone used Mountain Lion with Time Machine for the WD MyBook Live Duo

This NAS is working with OSX Lion.  But since I had trouble moving up to Lion with my previous WD NAS drive, I want to make sure that it works.
    Thanks

Upgraded to Mavericks yesterday.  Seems to have gone well except for one thing.  My computer will not recognized my WD MyBook Live 3T and thus Time Machine will not work with it.  My wife's MacBook Pro is still running 10.6.8 and her computer is still working properly and doing back ups.  Called Western Digital Tech support and Apple Tech Support.  Not much helpl there.  I attempted to download and use the newest sofware (during Mavericks installation I did get a warning that the old WD software was not supported).  However, one of the first steps is getting the software to scan for the backup drive.  No dice.  The computer is not recognizing its existence at all in any place you might look.  So I am stuck and frustrated at this point.  I have plugged and unplugged things.  The MyBook Live is hooked up directly by ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme router.  My computer is hooked up by ethernet cable to the router and my wife's laptop uses the WiFi connection.  Apple Tech suggested a direct hookup to my computer.  My computer still would not recognize it.

  • Why can't I locate airport extreme, WiFi HP 7520 all-in-one, and WD MyBook Live (ethernet cable to airport).

I installed OS X Mavericks two days ago.  My computer will not access Airport Extreme.  I downloaded printer software for Mavericks for HP 7520 a wireless machine.  The HP 7520 can find Airport but my computer can find neither.  (A direct USB hookup does work, however.)  For Time Machine backups I am using WD MyBook Live 3T.  The HP and WD are share with my wife who uses a MacBook Pro, is running OSX 10.6.8, and is having no issues.  Software seems to be up to date in both machines.  These things seem to point to the Airport Extreme being the problem.  How can it be fixed?

  • Can I connect Apple TV to Mybook Live?

How do I stream the contact of mybook live through AppleTV?

You will not be able to directly connnect your Apple TV to a remote hard drive.
The Apple TV can communicate with other computers through Home Sharing which can be set up on the Apple TV and the computer you wish to communicate using your iTunes account ID. But Apple TV will only have access to content available in the iTunes of that computer.
You can use Airplay to stream Quicktime compatible content to the Apple TV but this is a manual process. But it would allow you to select media on your Mybook from your computer and view it on the Apple TV as long as the file type is supported by Quicktime.
    Hope this helps, Rodí

  • I need to backup TC's drive. How do I do this to WD MyBook Live connected to TC via Ethernet?

I need to backup TC's drive. How do I do this to WD MyBook Live connected to TC via Ethernet?

P.S. Solved it exactly the other way around (compared to the original intent). 4 simple steps:
    1. Made WD's MyBook Live my primary file server.
    2. Made WD's MyBook Live my backup location for Time Machine (moving to it made me reconfigure TM on all home Macs = new full backups and no old data left - but I didn't really need old backups - they were sitting there just in case).
Added bonus - on MyBook Live it is easy to create shares (so that now my general file server is separate from my photo archive and software archive, etc.) - while on TC I had to partition the drive.
    3. Moved all files from TC to MyBook Live.
    4. Erased all data from TC - so that its drive is clean.
    5. Instructed MyBook Live to automatically backup itself to TC.
    Job done.

  • ITunes download on NAS WD MyBook Live - super slow!

I have a WD MyBook Live with latest firmware - 2TB. Ever since I moved my iTunes media folder to the NAS performance is great, except my download speeds are crazy slow! I have a 450MBPS 5ghz WIFI connection. When transferring to and from my Macbook Pro to the NAS I get speeds in the region of 30MB/s. Yet when I am downloading with iTunes I get 1MB/s!
If I download straight to my HDD ( tested by making another iTunes folder ) I get super fast speeds that pretty much max out my 120MBPS Virgin Media connection. So what gives? I tried both making an alias and also a symbolic link point downloads to a different location, but iTunes does not recognise this.
    Any suggestions?

I would really appreciate some input on this issue please!

  • WD Mybook Live wont use Time Machine

    Hi All.
First Post on this Forum, as I am new to Apple's. Just purchased a shiny new Imac as the new family computer.
I have also purchased a Mybook Live NAS drive (3TB) for backing up family Photo's etc.
I have updated the firmware of the drive, but that is about it.
I can see the drive ion the Network, and can copy files to the relavent folders. The drive is also visible on my WIn 7 Laptop.
I am also able to see another Network drive My Book-Backup), which i am unable to access.
When using TIme Machine, i can only select the My Book Backup Drive. the program then starts and finds the drive noting it is 3TB in size. Time Machine them seems to hang and after 10-15 Minutes gives the folloing msg
"Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup due to a network problem." after some 5 10 Minutes of stating  it states that it is unable to access the drive"
I have searched the wb high and low but can=t seem to resolve the problem. I have noted people creating a User on the drive - (WD_BACKUP) with a pasword of BACKUP).
This does not seem to work either giving me the same error, as if i use "Guest" login.....
Any ideas as I would like to be able to use the Time Machine functionality.
Cheers for any help that you can give.

  • Time machine won't recognize my WD MyBook Live as a backup drive

I am having an issue with Time Machine not recognizing my 1 TB MyBook Live External Hard drive.  I recently changed internet providers and have a new modem and router (motorolla modem and medialink router) and since then I can't get Time Machine to consistently recognize the backup portion of this hard drive.  Every now and then, not sure why, it will recognize the drive and back it up but won't stay connected all the time.  Most of the time it acts as if there is no backup drive.  I checked to see when the last backup was made and it said it was made a day ago but it was while I was asleep over night.  Not sure why it connected then or how. To get even more odd, it does recognize the drive because I can access all the files on the server portion of the mybook live drive.  For example I have all of my iTunes library on there and run it off the drive and that works fine and recognizes everything.
I have a macbook and I'm running Snow Leopard.  Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

TM apparently identifies the machine's backup by the Computer Name stored in the Sharing preferences. Try opening Sharing preferences and changing the Computer Name to the one you used previously when your TM backup was created.

  • MyBook Live very slow on Mac

    Hi,
I've a MyBook Live connected to my router.
I'm using an iMac (OSX 10.9.1) and everything works fine until I put into the MyBook Live 16GB of folders and files (about 6000 folders with other files/subfolders inside).
Now the disk is impossible to use from the Mac because opening folders takes minutes and indexing files too.
From Windows everithing works fine without slowdowns.
I've also tried to change the connection protocol (smb:// cifs:// afp://) but nothing changes....
How can I solve my problem? Now it's unusable...
    Thanks

You will have to forgive me, as my Mac-speak is horribly limited, but:
1.) what is your I/O sub-system set up, i.e. HDD's size, speed controller and how allocated? This is often the most important link in NLE work.
2.) what is you CPU speed? This is also important in NLE work. RAM is great, but not the end-all in performance.
In general, I've seen very few posts about CS4 being slow on a Mac. I'd offer a wild guess that it's your System's setup, or too many other programs running that saps the resources that any NLE will need.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • I am running my first time machine backup onto a Western Digital MyBook Live.  It is taking forever.  Is there antivirus software running in the background or any other settings I need to change to speed it up?  Also I am on a wireless network.

I am running my first time machine backup onto a Western Digital MyBook Live.  It is taking forever.  Is there antivirus software running in the background or any other settings I need to change to speed it up?  Also I am on a wireless network.

The initial Time Machine backup can certainly take a long time over wireless. Days, possibly. It's impossible for anyone here to be able to predict how long it will take, and wireless environmental conditions can change at any time.
Is there antivirus software running in the background
Only you can determine that. If you're using third party AV software, anything is possible.
NAS devices may not be compatible with Time Machine, regardless of what their manufacturers may claim. Even after the Time Machine backup completes, your backup may be unreliable. You may not discover that until you need to rely upon the backup for some reason, and corruption can occur months or years from now.
Time Machine supports the following backup configurations:
    A locally mounted volume
    Time Capsule
A volume resident on a USB hard disk connected directly to a Time Capsule or current production AirPort Extreme Base Station.
That's it. Any configuration other than the above list places you in an experimental category. If your backup fails, you're on your own.

  • MyBook Live stoped working properly after OSX Moutain Lion 10.8.5 Update - TimeMachine & Share unusable

    Hi folks
I having my first OSX nightmare after updating to 10.8.5
I have a Mini and a WD MyBook Live 2TB external drive partionioned in half 1TB for Files and other for TimeMachine
After upgrading OSX to 10.8.5 last week I noticed irregular dysplay of my WD shares on Finder and when TimeMachine started backing up a ridiculous 20 179 days and counting up appeared
Here goes the History by detail:
    Update OSX
-Noticing irregular access to shares on MyBook Live
--shares on finder didn't appear or disapeared
--when viewing other things (eg Apps) and returning to share - share was logged off and reinitiated logging
-TimeMachine Backups didn't occur automatically (Mini hibernated without completing them) - when forced to start the ridiculous time just kept counting up, first try was 10 days last one - over 20 000 days!...
    Then I tryed
    +restarting MAC
+restarting MyBook Live after checking drive function with proper tools
    +disabled and re-enabled TimeMachine
+checked for updates - OSX and MyBook Live Firmware
+looked out for help google it, searched this forums
+deleted volinfo.database (as proposed elsewere in this foruns) - restarted again all Mini&MyBookLive
    NOTHING WORKED ...
+submited OSX feedback and this post...
Acknowledging my first OSX Nightmare to you and asking for your knowledgable and kind help - anyone?!
    PLZ some guidance
    Best regards

Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. This is an example of what can happen. I know that the manufacturer says it will work, and that it usually seems to work. Except when it doesn't. Then your only recourse is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or a mini-tower (802.11ac) AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base station supports Time Machine, not any previous model.

  • Time Machine doesn't see MyBook Live NAS.

I just got a new SMC-D3GNV gateway from Comcast and now Time Machine doesn't see my NAS MyBook Live. I can access all my files on the MyBook Live via finder. Also, all software/firmware is current. Any idea's?

I know variations on this question have been asked many times before, but I've just read many of those threads, and I don't see an answer.
Time Machine does not see my La Cie Network Space NAS and neither does Disk Utility (the La Cie support pages imply that it should, believe it or not).
If your Mac can contact the NAS, it should appear in a Finder sidebar (if your Finder preferences are set for that). If you can set Time Machine up to back up to it, it will create a +sparse bundle+ on it. That sparse bundle, when mounted, will appear in Disk Utility's sidebar, and you can do a +*Repair Disk+* on it. Otherwise, no, Disk Utility won't see network drives.
Does not matter if it is connected via WiFi or directly through ethernet. I suspect this means that it is not Mac OS extended formatted, and not formattable (by Disk Utility) either.
Correct; Disk Utility can't format a network drive.
Review the LaCie specs and setup instructions carefully. My quick read on their site does not turn up any claim that it's Time Machine compatible, though.
    Can you return it?

  • MyBook live duo not displaying in Time Machine

i want to back up my MacBook using time machine and a MyBook live duo. OS is up to date, as is firmware. The MyBook shows in Finder and I can copy individual files to and from it no problem. The MyBook is configured to allow TM backups. However, when I enter TM, the LiveBook doesn't appear in the drop down menu as a drive I can back up to (even though it still appears in Finder with no issues). Really grateful for any suggestions.

  • Problem with MyBook Live and Time Machine on MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I bought recently a WD MybookLive 2 tb.
The HD is connected to the modem and make backup from Macbook Pro 15 'with Time Machine.
Previously everything worked correctly, the Mac recognizes the disc and carried outregular backups, everything started to not work after the updates that were released by Apple on November 11 with software update - firmware on the My Book Live theMyBookLive 02.10.09-124: Core F / W
    I get this error:
Time Machine can not complete the backup. The disk backup is not available.
Apart from Time Machine, yes, I use the MyBook Live, I load the disk where you are within the Public folders Shared Music, Shared Pictures, Shared Videos, and Software,I can easily copy files and copy them from there into to my computer - the My Book and'set a DHCP address.

  • Mybook live

Has anyone experience a problem with WD Mybook Live not being able to be detected by Time Machine on Macbook Pro?  I found this problem to be very strange as I am able to mount the myBook Live via SMB and I have both write and write access to the folders within the drive.  Also, I have no problem access the myBook Live via my Wiindows XP laptop, which shows the drive under my Network Neighbourhood.
Currently, I am connecting myBook Live via my modem router supplied by Singnet, Singapore.  Since I have no issue with the drive via my Windows XP laptop, I deduced that this problem should not be caused by the modem router.
However, I have to add that when I first bought and install the myBook Live drive, it was via another router (Belkin) and Time Machine works like a charm.  This problem only started when I switch the router.
i hope my description above is not confusing as it might appear that my router might be the source of the problem.
    Thanks.
