WD MyBook no longer readable on my iBook

HELP PLEASE!!! My Hard drive accidentally disconnected from them USB port and now when I plug it back in, it says that it's not readable:( I bought a new WD My Book World hard drive so I could get rid of all cables, but I don't want to lose all my music and 10 years of pictures. Can somebody please help me?

If the Disk Utility can't see the externally enclosed USB hard disk drive,
you may have to get and use a third-party disk utility such as DiskWarrior.
Could be there is some damage in the external drive's data due to improper
unmounting of the drive from the computer, prior to a physical disconnect.
The data on the drive should be recoverable, however some repair of the
hard disk drive would be a likely requirement before full access is possible.
There may be something else wrong with the hard disk drive or the enclosure
however it is possible to see about repairing the disk drive if it appears in the
Disk Utility. It may appear there even if it won't work. And sometimes, too, an
external drive may appear if attached before the computer is started, so it is
there when the computer loads all of the usual files. Even if it won't appear
on the Desktop, it may appear if attached before a restart, in Disk Utility.
That may be a chance to see if the basic 'repair disk' feature in your Mac's
Disk Utility can help gain access to the data. There may be a bad sector
or other damages to the hard disk drive's software or hardware, too.
For attempting to recover data, there are services that can be rather costly
and those can vary in price according to the amount of data is recovered;
there also some that can recover most data even if they have to rebuild a
hard disk drive from parts of other similar units, if the unit has a defect.
I'd heard of trial software for recovery, where you can get a limited version
that can scan for data on the hard drive in question, and see if anything is
there; and later you would pay to get the full version to work. Or, you would
send the unit in and a technician would work in recovering the data ($$$)
re: data rescue: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
If you can get the Disk Utility to see and do minor repair, that would be OK.
However, a third party utility such as DiskWarrior may be able to access
some file structures the Mac's Disk Utility may not be able to. Of course,
DiskWarrior is a retail product, and sells in the range of $99. I've heard.
Another idea, to try, if the external drive can be seen, may be some software
that is open source (+free) that is helpful in recovering data of several types.
Data, images, documents, and so on; from flash drive, hard drive, etc.

Though the above may help, the main concept is to get the Mac to recognize
there is an external hard disk drive attached. I've had some experience with
this with different technologies, but have been mostly lucky & persistent.
Good luck & happy computing!

My iPhoto won't open. It says "Your photo library is either in use by another application or no longer readable." Please tell me I haven't lost all my pics?! I do not have them backed up. I have tried restarting my mac. Please Help!

What haven't you backed them up? You should always have a back up of any important material on your Mac. Make one now:
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

  • I dropped my external hard drive which contained my iTunes library and it is no longer readable. I attempted to upload my library from iPod and while all the songs appear to be in iTunes I get a message telling me that the original file can't be located.

I dropped my external hard drive that contained my iTues library and the disk is no longer readable. I figured I would simply transfer my music back from my iPod to my MacBook Pro and it loks like it worked. All the songs are there, but I receive a message that the original file can't be found when I try to play anything. ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

    A Couple of questions..
Is the location shown under preferences/Advanced/General still showing the correct location?
Is the check boxes under this checked or unchecked?

  • Updated to 10.4.10 and external hard drive is no longer readable...

I was asked to install a few updates today when I booted up. I d-loaded like a good little soldier and installed and now my external Seagate drive is no longer readable. The prompt asks me if I want to initialize, ignore or eject the drive.
    Here are the updates...
1.) About iMac Software Update 1.1
This update provides important bug fixes and is recommended for 20-inch and 24-inch iMac models with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8GHz processors.
    2.) Keyboard Software Update 1.2
    3.) iTunes 7.4.1 for Mac
4.) Compatibility Update for QuickTime 7.2
Is there anyone that would know why this is happening?
    Thanks,
    John

It's hard to imagine why those updates would affect your Seagate drive - the iMac Software Update 1.1 was simply an update to the graphics drivers, and the other ones are self explanatory. Have you looked in the system logs to see whether there is any clue in there as to what is failing? (Open the Console application to view the logs).

  • .WAV files no longer readable after Yosemite update

    The issue:
I recently did the switch to Yosemite. I now find some .WAV files to be no longer readable through FCP X, Preview app, QT, etc. BUT, I can open them through VLC, and also Soundtrack Pro. The problem:
An FCP X project with this .WAV files has already been edited, with multiple cuts (46 to be exact) throughout the 35 minute timeline. The file is still visible on timeline with all cuts but is now silent. Looking to relink that audio with a working file. The original files' timecode starts at 09:46:30:09, with 7 channels of audio. What I tried to do:
Open in Soundtrack Pro and simply "Save as" a new .wav file. Still not readable. Then brought the original file in to a new Multitrack Project in Soundtrack Pro, exported to .wav, which is now readable by all programs, but cant be relinked since info are not matched (channel count and timecode) "Incompatible file.
The original file and new file have different audio source and channel counts.
Relinked files must have the same media type and similar audio channels as the original files, and must be long enough to cover all the clips that reference the files."
    My system:
    FCPX (10.1.3)
    OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) iMac (27 inch, Late 2012)
    3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB

Thanks Martin. Thats just what I'm going to do. For the record, I have been dealing with Apple support concerning this issue for the last month. It's been a frustrating and exhaustive process and the outcomes has been underwhelming to say the least:
It seems that under OSX Yosemite, Apple Core Audio , which plays audio in all the apple apps: QT, iTunes, FCPX, Logic Pro X etc, can no longer read multi-track WAV files larger than 2GBs. I tested this extensively myself, and the support staff member I was dealing with was able to re-create the problem at his end.
Apps that do not use Core Audio CAN play the WAV files: QT7, Adobe Premiere, Audacity etc.
Using this information the support member helping me escalated the issue to the Apple developers teams for both FCPX and OSX. He said he was really unimpressed by their response, and that while they acknowledged that there 'may' be an issue with Core Audio they didn't care enough to investigate it. He said that while a fix may come in the future there is no timeline for it to happen. He said he wasn't allowed to recommend that I downgrade, but he then rather embarrassingly admitted that I have no choice if I want to have a functioning project again.
Which makes a mockery of my decision to use FCP over Premiere based on the assumption that Apple would better support their software. FCP has pretty much ****** me off right from the start with its babyish interface and glitchy behaviour. Now I have to downgrade my system to Mavericks, in order to limp to the finishing line with this edit, before I will be ridding myself of this junk for good.

  • Can I recover data from a flash drive that is no longer readable?

A flash drive that I left plugged into my MacBook Pro is no longer readable. Are there ways to recover the files that were (are?) stored there?

I see that the suggested programs are $80 to $100. Are there any cheaper alternatives or should I just throw this thumb drive away (all the data on it is backed up elsewhere)?
Is this normal for a thumb drive to fail?

  • 120 GB External Hard Drive no longer readable

My 120 GB external hard drive has been working perfectly fine on my new macbook pro. I just updated to OS X v. 10.5.2. Ever since, my external hard drive is no longer readable by the computer. I would like to set it up with time machine. I tried to connect the HD to another mac and a PC and it cannot be found by any computer. When i plug it into my computer, it brings me to the disk utility but I haven't been able to do anything to it. I don't really care much about the information on it as it is just backup stuff and my computer has it saved. Is there any way to format the drive and make it workable even if it is unreadable and can only be seen through the disk utility?

It only resets the machine's parameter RAM to the defaults (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238 for details) which will necessitate resetting those preferences, but they're minimal. It could well be that the ext HD's gone south, but since it was usable prior to updating, it's worth a shot. If that doesn't allow you to see the HD, then you'll need something more powerful, such as DiskWarrior or TechTools. If those can't allow you to access it, then if there's stuff on it that you want to recover, you'll need something like DataRescue and even that might not work.

  • Why is my portable HDD no longer readable?

My WD portable HDD is no longer readable on my computer. Whenever I connect it, an error message pops up saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". It was working fine this morning and I've never had any issues with it before. It contains a lot of documents that will take quite literally hours to copy across to another computer in order to 'repair' or 'reformat' or whatever it is that it asks me to do. I've opened disk utilities and the repair disk button isn't available, nor is the verify disk button. I've restarted the computer to no avail an have tried both USB ports. I've also checked the cable that connects the portable HDD to the computer. Nothing has changed. I also have another portable HDD of the same brand (slightly older) which is working fine. The only thing I can think of that has changed is that Time Machine did it's back up. Could it have done something? PLEASE HELP!

I've just tried it in other computers (admittedly they run Windows, but I'm 99% sure that I formatted it so that it could be used on both Windows and Mac), and tried it with a different cable that was working with another HDD. Nothing. Which leads me to believe that it might be the device itself. It's not that old though and it was just sitting on my desk so I don't understand how or why it's no longer working. If anyone knows of a way to remove/back up the disk I would greatly appreciate it. I'll be devastated if I loose all the files on it.

  • HT4059 I can no longer read books using ibooks, i have the second gen ipod touch

what other app can i use to read books other than ibooks this app is no longer compatible with my ipod

So if you spent money on one of these two devices, its just a poke in the eye? No solution to simply wanting to read books you paid for? Is it being suggested that old ipods can't handle books?  There's no possible way to make them compatible?  Is Apple's solution "just buy the newer one" like everyone just has that kind of disposable income.
EDIT: my mother has this issue, and she asked me "What is the solution to problems like this?" and I replied, "Android"

  • ITunes 10 - No longer sync PDFs to iBooks on iPad

Immediately following the upgrade to iTunes 10, I can no longer sync PDF's to my iPad (v3.2.2) for use with iBooks. Is anyone else having the same issue and even more importantly, has anyone resolved this?

Appears that in order to fix this you must delete all of your PDF documents out of iTunes and re-add them to your library.
I attempted rolling back to iTunes v9.2.1 to resolve this and the issue carried on to that version so I'm not sure what the true cause would be. Especially given that the iTunes 10 and iTunes 9 libraries were completely separate (utilized a backup copy of the v9 library for the v9 installation).
Hopefully an official "fix" for this will come out in future versions.

  • How long to charge from iBook?

I'm trying to lighten my pack and was wondering - how long would it take to fully charge a color display iPod from a plugged in iBook? It would save me from having to pack two AC cubes.
I understand I could also plug into any USB2 port, even if it's a PC. TIA.

Doh. Just found this on Apple site ...
"Once connected, your iPod battery will be 80 percent charged in about an hour, and fully charged in about 4 hours (time may vary with models - iPod nano is 80 percent charged in 1.5 hours and fully charged in about 3 hours and Fifth Generation iPod is 80 percent charged in 2 hours and fully charged in about 4 hours)."
As I also have iTunes on my iBook, will it try to update the iPod? I don't really use iTunes on my iBook but don't want it muddling up my iPod. I only update from my G5.

  • Lacie external hard drive no longer readable by computer

I am using a lacie tb hard drive, and ran data rescue 3 recovery software on it. Now, when I plug it in, the hard drive is not readable by the computer at all.
    Advice?
    thanks

    Hi BoyHowdyDoo,
This is an external drive that traceyx is talking about, so no need to boot from the OS DVD to run DiskUtility.
I'm a bit suspicious that the drive is actually physically failing, I'm afraid in this case, given the mention of bad blocks etc.
Tracey, I'm not sure from your comments whether you have actually already managed to get the things you want from the drive off it or not?
Running DiskUtility over it shouldn't hurt the drive, and may repair it sufficiently to get it "seen" again. I very much doubt if Drive Rescue has really done any serious damage to the drive if it was healthy beforehand, but the mention you made of bad blocks being reported is a worry, and the WD external drives unfortunately don't have a very good reputation for reliability.
If you were trying to recover the deleted files to a disk that was itself already damaged then unpredictable consequences could have occurred.
In this situation myself, assuming this is a Mac HFS(+) formatted external drive, If Disk Utility didn't fix it I would probably use Alsoft's "DiskWarrior" to try to repair it. It is capable of dealing with problems that are beyond the ability of DiskUtility . If that failed I would use DataRescue to try to recover the contents to another external.

  • External Hard drive No Longer Readable by Macbook Pro

I've been using a PQI Portable HD 551 external drive to back up my files for some time now. I haven't backed up since 9/21/12 and I tried to today and got the error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I've had no problems with the disk since I reformatted it for Macs, so I'm not sure what the problem is. The USB outlet works for my other external harddrive just fine.

Have you tried checking with the external drive's manufacturer's web support site for FAQs, updated drivers or firmware?

  • Time Machine drive is no longer readable

I have just completed a reformat of my MacBook Pro early 2011 with an install of Mavericks.  I have a Time Machine backup drive that I have manually been pulling files from.  It has been working great with no issues.  I decided to plug the Time Machine drive into an iMac i have to download some other files to and the iMac didn't recognize the drive.  I plugged the Time Machine drive back into my MacBook Pro and received an message that the disk was unreadable and given the option to Initialize/Ignore/Eject.   I restarted the computer and the drive to see if it was a glitch – same result.
Opened Disk Utility and the drive is recognized but only as a drive - no option to verify or repair. It doesn't see a readable partition with files.
Is there an easy fix to correct this issue or am i looking at shelling out a few hundred+ $ to have the disk recovery tech fix this?   Any help is appreciated.
