WD MyBook or My Book unmounting randomly

I work for a Mac Support company in NYC, where we setup/teach/troubleshoot for homes or small businesses all over the city. However, I'm stumped by some recent issues with the WD 1TB My Book drives we've been purchasing for clients. In the past, WD has always been a reliable brand, so I'm wondering if anyone else is having these problems, or if someone thinks it might be Leopard related.
Running Leopard on all machines, recently 2 or 3 of the My Book 1TB drives have started unmounting randomly. But of course since Time Machine is supposed to be a "set it and forget it" solution, the client doesn't notice this until we get there (which is about once every couple weeks), and at that point they may have lost a week or more of backups (not a huge deal, but they're still not getting the full convenience and functionality of Time Machine). The drive, however, seems to be "on", and running, though not mounted (and does not show up in Disk Utility). So, to fix this, we simply turn it off and on again, and it shows up fine. Sometimes we have to do more than that, like disconnect it, turn it off, reconnect it, etc. I've had this happen on different machines, all running Leopard, but all with the WD My Book 1TB drive (though different My Book drives). Most of these drives are connected using Firewire 800, but some are using 400.
Unfortunately, after recommending these drives to numerous clients, I've since had to return 2 of them because 1 of them mounted sporadically and for the most part, not at all, and also was very hard to get to stay powered up, and the other one wouldn't turn on at all (lemon, bad power button). Had I had these problems from the outset, I may have recommended other drives. However, now, I'm hoping against hope that it's just Leopard, and not just horribly made drives! Unfortunately, I don't have a Tiger machine at most of the client homes to test it out on.
HOPEFULLY this is not a problem with the drives, which I have read only good reviews about, but rather is a problem with Leopard, which I assume will be updated in January (10.5.2) with some sort of fix. However, any advice or suggestions others have would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Ryan

Would the problem possibly be this sleep issue?

  • My Mac book is randomly turning off.

Hi my Mac book is randomly turning off usually at a little bit under half battery. The computer is about two to three years old and I use it a lot. Why is it doing this and what should I do? I am taking it in to the apple store tomorrow. Around how much will it cost to get in.

An examination at the Apple store will not cost you anything. Be sure to make a reservation so you don't have to wait too long at the Genius Bar. If there is a repair required there may be a cost for that.
Have you tried resetting the System Management Controller? That would be the first step I would try for most power related issues.
    Best of luck.

  • Can't delete email AND address book changes randomly

As of yesterday I can highlight an email, hit delete but it doesn't go to the trash. I'll check my 2nd account, go back to the first account and all deleted messages are there. Plus, it will run continuously. Currently it says it is sorting. NEVER had this problem before and need help.
Secondly, my address book will randomly change the card names. I can go in, correct, save, close and the next time I open the address book some of them will be different. For instance one card is titled "Lexington". It has changed to "Lexington Lexington" several times or it will pick up the name of the last person in Lexington and show up as "Lexington Lastinger"

What sort of email account is this, POP or IMAP? What version of Mac OS X are you running; your profile says 10.3, but if that's true, then you're way behind the times and in the wrong forum. We need accurate information in your profile, so you need to update that.
Secondly, my address book will randomly change the card names.
No, this is not random. Mail and Address Book communicate, so when you receive an email from someone in your Address Book, if the name doesn't match the email address for that card, it is updated with the name in the email address.

  • SSD unmounts randomly

    Hi all,
I have an issue for the past 1 month.
I bought the samsung ssd 840 evo 1 month ago and i did i copyied (throught the Time Machine) the current hdd to the ssd. For the first boot i had some strange problems with some programs that i fixed in the way. The only problem that i cannot find a solution is that the SSD randomly unmounts. This is hypothetical because when that is happening the skype is closed with an error telling me of an "I/O error", i cannot open folders, save work, chrome cannot open tabs etc.
The only way to bypass it was to hold the power button and hard restart the system.
So that lead to a completly crash after a month and 3 days ago i did a complete format and reinstallation of the system without using any restore point from Time Machine to be sure. I run hardware test to the whole system and everything looked perfect for 1 day.
Today i have exactly the same behaviour without knowing what else to do. I've searched all over the internet without any luck. My only solution left is to return the SSD to the vendor but they can check it and see that the hardware tests say that the SSD is perfect.
Any suggestions about the problem ?
    My macbook specifications:
    Macbook Pro 13'' 2011
    OS: OSX 10.9.3 (Maverick)
    Processor: 2.3Ghz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 8GB 1333MHz DDR3

So to update what I've done since my last update,
I decided to eliminate that SSD, I have 3 Evo's lying around the place in computers so I swapped one out for the one inside the MBP.
A different Evo had the exact same issue as before with it powering down while in use (I even got a message saying I should eject first), at the time I was using carbon copy to clone from a external HDD which I'd booted from onto the new Evo.
The old one which was originally showing errors in now running in my Windows Desktop with no issues or signs of failure.
Also I've tested both SATA ports, with a HDD Caddy and the power down is present from both ports which rules out the SATA cable.
What I'm left with is no problem with the SATA cable and no issue with the SSD, as I'm currently running off a spare HDD I found and put into the MBP which has no issues so that rules out a problem with power delivery. I'm left with a problem with Compatibility, There was a firmware update late last year which was released after most of the posts have been made about no problems with the Evo, or a Failing controller that can't handle SATA III as all of the drives I've used are SATA II.
On a final note I notice it tends to power down after writing large amounts of data as it turned off most frequently when installing or cloning (After about 20GB). although ran with no issued for 3 hours with general use.

  • External HDs Unmount Randomly

I have 2 External Hard Drives...one is a 180gb FW Lacie about 2 years old, and the second is a 500gb FW Fantom Drives about 3 months old.
I upgraded to Leopard about a month ago and ever since, both HDs are randomly un-mounting from the desktop with the "(!)Device Removal" dialog coming up. I've searched other forums and haven't come up with any good answers. I haven't lost any data, and the hard drives seem to stay mounted while I'm reading/writing to them. But, while they are sitting idle they seem to unmount and then remount minutes later completely spontaneously, without any recognizable pattern. I should mention that both HDs are hooked up through a 20" apple DVI display and then to my Powerbook. I would think maybe that it was the HD if it was only one of them, but it's both.
More than anything it's an annoyance at this point because I haven't lost any data, but I don't want the problem to get any worse and cause me to lose anything.
If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Scott

How, more precisely, is everything interconnected? For example, is the LaCie Firewired to the display, and the Fantom Firewired to the LaCie?
I'm not on Leopard, so do not know issues there. LaCie power supplies have a poor history. I can conjecture that if the LaCie power goes bad, and the other drive is daisy chained, that both could go offline, until the supply "recovers."
In other words, try removing the LaCie completely. You might also try the drives direct to the Mac, bypassing the display.

    kaeandcolesmon,
If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
    See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

  • Offline Address Book Missing Random Recipients

I'm coming from an upgrade of Exchange 2007 to 2010 in our organization. One major change I've made with our new Offline Address Book is that we no longer have Public Folder distribution enabled, just Web Distribution.
I'm having an issue where Outlook clients in "Cached Mode" are missing random recipients from their offline address book.  These aren't just new users, but appear to be random.  A client in non-cached mode does not have this problem,
and OWA users do not either.  I can delete the offline address book from AppData folder, connect in cached mode, and before the book downloads, I see the missing entries.  However as soon as I download the address book, they disappear.
This is causing problems because users cannot Send As one of the missing recipients because they are not in the address book.  Another user sees in Outlook that "delivery will fail to these recipients" because they are not in his address book.
I've tried creating a new address book, scanning with OABValidate, etc.  OABValidate did find 10 errors out of close to 5000 users, but none of them are users that are missing in the address book.  Not sure where else the problem might be, it was
OK in Exchange 2007. Only difference was "Public Folder Distribution" was enabled.

Thanks for your suggestion.  I just tried this, and I do see many entries for users have properties truncated or dropped because they exceeded the size limits.  These users do still appear in the OAB.  However I am still not seeing at least
one of the particular users that I am looking for in the logs.  I'm not sure why they would be getting skipped from the OAB but are fine in the address list itself.
EDIT:  Another note, on an affected client which is in Cached mode, I can change from Global Address list to *All Users address list, and the missing users are there.
I came across this article, which is for 2003, but seems to describe my situation exactly.  However I don't see the missing users show up in logs when enabling the debugging as specified.

  • Mac Book Pro Randomly froze up on me

    Hey guys,
I posted this on another forum but they seemed to be no help.
This issue happened to me so far twice. Once yesterday and once today, today being a little bit more serious i'm guessing.
Yesterday I downloaded Google Earth 5.0 and used it for a bit, then switch to safari. Once I went to safari, the computer froze up on me and didn't unfreeze. I could still move my mouse around, but that was it.
I decided to click it off and restart it, then it worked fine.
But now i wanted to open a youtube link from my desktop, and then it suddenly froze on me again.
This time when it restarted there was a folder icon and a question mark for a second, and then went to Apple Hardware test (I might of been pressing F2, dont know if this triggered it). I did the test and it said no hardware issues were found, and then even did the extended test. I clicked restart and it went back to normal and ran properly.
Any clue what the issue might be? Is this serious? Should i take it to a store?

I could still move my mouse around, but that was it.
Hmm, this is different from some of the other freezing issues we've seen here. It could have been Google Earth that caused this. If it happens again (cross your fingers that it doesn't) try pressing Command-Option-Esc. If that brings up the Force Quit dialog, you may be able to quit the offending program instead of restarting.

  • Font Book is empty even though I'm adding fonts. Shuts down randomely.

I've upgraded to Yosemite on a Mac. Randomly when I open Font Book the window shows there are no fonts activated. Which I know isn't true because I'm using many non system fonts. I'll go to add a font, the computer processes like it's adding the font, but the font is nowhere to be font on Font Book. Also, as I'm clicking around trying to trouble shoot Font Book Randomly shuts down. Somethings off, can't figure out what. Please help a technologically challenged user.

    Howdy kidspaztik,
So Font Book will randomly not show fonts but other times shows them just fine.  And at times clicking around within Font Book it may or may not quit.
I'm wondering if there is a corrupt font somewhere, or if this happens with another user.

  • Why is Address Book deleting all my contacts randomly?

    Hi,
I've been using a 20" Intel iMac for about 2 years now, and I've loved it. However, after upgrading to Leopard in late May, and having my .mac account upgraded to MobileMe in July, my Address Book will randomly delete all of my contacts (over 700).
Aside from the "panic" this causes, it also loses "My Card" which means iCal can't send email invites for meetings I schedule, auto-complete in Mail doesn't work, etc.
I've Reset Syncing with MobileMe a number of times, and finally turned off syncing with MobileMe altogether. The problem is still happening. I've also re-installed Leopard using the Archive & Install option, Software Updated my system with all the patches and updates, restored an old Address Book archive -- I do weekly backups offsite -- and still the problem persists.
The only thing I can find -- and which I am utterly incapable of doing anything about -- is a one-line entry in Console's Log files that reads:
    7/17/08 5:48:55 AM com.apple.launchd[511] ([0x0-0x96096].com.apple.AddressBook.abd[1820]) Check-in of Mach service failed. PID 1820 is not privileged: com.apple.AddressBook.abd
Right after this scrolls by, I check my Address Book and sure enough...it's empty. What can I do about this?

I have Backup 3 scheduled to backup my address book data files (and a number of others as well) every week, and store them out on my iDisk. When I realized my address book was empty, I used Backup to restore one of the older archives. Without that, I'm not sure what I would have done...
For what it's worth, I have a little bit of new information to add to this story. As an experiment, I restored my backup and immediately exported my entire address book to a vCard file. The next time my data disappeared, I imported the vCard file instead of my address book archive. I lost all of my groups -- which is frustrating -- but so far, the actual contact data has remained in my address book for 5 hours. This is the longest by far...
Interestingly enough, I'm still getting that weird error message in Console, but there used to also be messages about certain contacts not having meta data and certain contacts having meta data. Now, there is just the permissions error...no more complaints about meta data.
Perhaps this is all just a bad coincidence with a corrupted address book data file, but still doesn't explain the Console error message. I'm going to keep experimenting until I either find a solution, someone here suggests a solution, or I simply give up out of frustration.

  • Generated Webhelp Navigation Book Links fail

    Robohelp HTML 9.0.1.232
    Word 2010
    WebHelp - custom template
Each time i generate a project with two linked word files, book links randomly fail. There is no pattern as to which book link will fail on each generation. Sometimes one fails, sometimes more than one.
By fail, i mean clicking the book link does not activate the page.
Any ideas why this might be happening?
    TIA
    Rob

    Hello again
While it certainly wouldn't hurt to clear the CPD file, I'd be surprised to discover it makes any real difference.
Question here. This one is a huge "gotcha" with mixing Word and RoboHelp this way. Do any of your Headings (which should end up being converted to individual topics) have any odd characters?
Note that when I say "Odd Characters" I mean any character other than A-Z, a-z, the underscore ( _ ) or 0-9. Quotes count as an odd character as do things like the shifted numbers ( !@#$%^&*()+ ). If so, I'm going to say that this is where your issue lies. While it's fine to use those characters in Word, they may wreak havoc when used as a file name.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Mid 2013 Mac Book Pro constantly freezing up and needing a hard restart

My mid 2012 mac book pro randomly started freezing while in use back in october. I had never had any problems with it and one night the beachball came up and nothing worked until I did a hard restart. Since then it's been happening constantly. I've had the hard drive replaced after being told that it was likely failing and the problem still remains. I've reset the Pram and everything else that can be reset. I reinstalled Lion. I've taken it to the apple store and they ran all the hardware and software test including the over night stress test for hardware and they found nothing wrong. They did a clean install at the store and the problem is still there. It is not program specific (it freezes while using any program or while doing nothing at all), it's not a ram issue. I don't have any apps except those that have come through the app store. I'm not sure what to do with it. It's basically rendered my $1300 computer unusable. Any thoughts. I'm going to try mavericks and see if that helps, have been running lion. From reading other forums it seems like this has happened to others, but it seems like everyone has different answers. Some switched to a different os, others found small hardware issues.

If it's behaving like the hard drive is bad and it's not, another likely candidate is the SATA cable which connects the drive to the motherboard. An easy way to test this is to take the drive out of the computer, move it to an external housing, and boot it from there by holding down the Option key and selecting that drive when you boot up. If everything runs fine, the SATA cable is the problem.

  • I don't know anything about programming! What books should I read to start?

I am a complete beginner in programming, but I really wanna code something. So I was thinking: What books should I read to start Cocoa-ing? I don't wish to just choose some book by random and take the risk that it might suck or be to old. All online courses I've found require some previous coding experience (except CocoaLab's one, but it seems to me that it doesn't cover the coding well enough).
Should I read 'The C Programming Language, 2nd edition, by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie' (I've got an access to that book) and then some book that covers Objective C and then some book about Cocoa, or what? What about the 'Dummies' book, is it any good?
    Thank you!

Two books are working well for me (I determined to learn Cocoa in March '08), *Programming in Objective-C* by Kochan (2nd Ed.), and *Cocoa Programming For Mac OS X* by Hillegass (3rd Ed.). Kochan's book is extremely good to learn about classes, objects, and general syntax, and assumes absolutely no programming background. There is nothing in there about XCode or Interface Builder. Hillegass' text is good, but really designed for those that have some programming experience and covers some introductory Interface Builder topics as well. It is labor-intensive, though, and to really get the most out of it, you need A LOT of time and a quiet place to work.
I still refer to the CocoaLab document for some things, and there are a number of blogs on learning different aspects of Cocoa out there as well. They are not always easy to find; cocoa, xcode, and then specific NSxxxx class names are the terms that give the best Google results. I have seen rumors that Kochan's book will have a new edition later in the year to cover some of the Objective-C 2.0 topics.
    Good Luck,
