WD MyBook Properly Formatted?

I just connected today (via firewire) a 500GB WD MyBook to my iMac to use as an external drive for Time Machine. There was already data on the drive that was no longer needed. When the WD was first connected, it was immediately recognized by my iMac. I indicated that it was to serve as a backup drive via Time Machine. I was also asked to erase the existing data/drive --- to which I indicated yes. Presumably the erase process proceeded without any hitch and the Time Machine started its first backup at about 1.5GB/min.
My question is: Should I assume that the WD MyBook was properly formatted? At no time was I asked to reformat as Mac OS Extended? Was this automatically performed during the erase process?

Why assume when you can know for sure? Select the Time Machine volume in the Finder, type the letter i (eye) while holding down the Command key, & read the format from the "Get Info" window that pops up.
To be sure everything is as recommended go one step further & open Disk Utility & select the parent drive of the TM volume from the list on the left (the TM volume name is indented under it) look at the bottom of the window. The last line of text there will tell you the partition map scheme of the drive. For a drive used only with Intel Macs, this should be "GUID Partition Table." Otherwise, it should be "Apple Partition Map." It should not be "Master Boot Record."

  • Can I install my time machine back up onto a properly formatted external hard drive?

    I have a MacBook Pro with a 750GB harddrive, with 500+ Gb of data on it.  Just before I traverse to Europe, I did a TimeMachine back up.
    I now want to give my Mac to a friend, and buy a AirMac when I get home.  Even if I get the one with the largest drive it will not hold the full 500+'back up.
    I have an 8 year old Mac Book pro at home as well.  It will be a few months before I can buy the new AirMac. So my question is ....
    Can I install my current backup on a properly formatted external hard drive, and will it then run like a computer --until I get my new AirMac?
    Thanks for your help (and please don't be too tough on me for what may see to de a dumb question)

    The Time Machine backup is not bootable
    You will have to install Leopard first

  • Phone numbers not properly formatted

    I just upgraded to the 4S and most of my phone numbers can't be dialed by SIRI because they are not properly formatted. The numbers that can be dialed are of the form +1-617-nnn-nnnn.  The numbers that cannot be dialed are of the form nnnnnnnnnn.  I have hundreds of numbers in this format.  Any ideas?

    Have you tried Settings > General > International to make sure your phone is not set to some incorrect region which might give it trouble interpreting the numbers?

    Does anybody has the answer?? plz. help

    I have added \n\r at the end of each line. You have probably not raed my question carefully. I have written that the output i get on console is properly formatted, only in the mail the format gets corrupt.

  • Indent in Slides not properly formatting

    I've got an issue which is probably a simplistic fix, but it's driving me nuts.  I've been creating final test slides and have a problem with indenting on some of the bullets.  I'm using captivate 5.5, and here is the issue in picture format.
    As you can see, the first three properly formatted, the 4th and 5th options came in as different indentions than A-C.  We also have a different size font for E.
    I'm sure this is something simplistic, but is there something I'm doing wrong to fix this?
    Thanks all

    I always try to repro the issue, couldn't.
    So I wonder if you didn't change the formatting on the first slide, and you could check that by selecting a answer and see if the Default Question Answer Style, that it has not a small + sign which points to individual changing of that answer?
    All answers should have the same style. Can you check first?

  • Recently, when I try to print from within Firefox (Mac 10.6), only the first page is properly formatted. This doesn't happen when using Safari.

    I regularly print newspaper articles that I view in Firefox. Until recently, multi-page documents formatted beautifully. Now only the first page is properly formatted. The other pages are enlarged and shifted to cuttoff several lines of text at the top of the page.

    Once you set that preference it should hold that setting. You could try 125% but it might clip the right-side of the page.

  • How can I force Firefox to properly format all html pages to a pdf without losing top and right hand margins?

    Setting up page printout format for pdf on a Mac OS/X Snow Leopard Mac Pro. Printer is HP 8500A OfficeJet Pro Plus bought after July 14, 2011 serial number- CN141CK7QM
    When I print to file as a pdf I am getting the first page correctly but subsequent pages are getting clipped along the top and the right margins.
    I don't have this problem with my IBook 4.0
    The issue is formatting an html page to a pdf when the print request is asking for a pdf or when the print request is to the printer.
    The url to my HP Office jet Pro 8500A Plus is:
    mdns://Officejet%20Pro%208500%20A910%20%5B530E4F%5D._pdl-datastream._tcp.local./?bidi
    I have a IBook G4 and I do not have any of this problem.
    I have specified a default paper size of "USLetter".
    This printing issue is a new one that occurred since I started the Firefox updates after Firefox 6.0 series.
    I am checking with HP on this issue. Prior to the HP8500A (installed in July 2011) I did have a HP6180 Officejet for several years without encountering such a conflict.
    So my second question is; Are there Firefox printing conflicts with the HP 8500A printers?

  • Need help properly formating hard disk. hard disk model wd7500bpvt says no bootable drive.

    bought this hard disk new from hp about 3 or 4 months ago.  hard disk was not recognized by the laptop.  i download app from hp to do low level format on hard disk.  Then i formated the drive during windows vista installation.  Upon completion of windows installation the drive will not boot up on its own.  what can i do to fix this?

    The odd 400MB is the hidden files put there by the system to define the file structure of the partition, plus other stuff like .Trash. It's perfectly normal and the HDD wouldn't be recognised if they weren't there.
    You will see a similar situation with the internal boot drive if you compare the Drive size (leftmost item with the manufacturers designation) and that of Macintosh HD (which is the working partition). In my case this shows 640.14 GB for the drive, 639.79 GB for Macintosh HD, a difference of 350MB
    This will be the same within about ± 50MB whatever drive you format in HFS+J, including pen drives.

  • Properly formatting output to XML

    While the code below would work to format something simple like this:
    <USERS>
    <USER>Tim Smith</USER>
    <USER>Jack Dempsey</USER>
    <USER>John Doe</USER>
    </USERS>
    hd.startDocument();
    AttributesImpl atts = new AttributesImpl();
    // USERS tag.
    hd.startElement("","","USERS",atts);
    for (int i=0;i<id.length;i++)
      atts.clear();
      hd.startElement("","","USER",atts);
      hd.characters(desc.toCharArray(),0,desc[i].length());
    hd.endElement("","","USER");
    hd.endElement("","","USERS");
    hd.endDocument();
    How does one do more complex nesting of xml elements? Such as if I wanted the output to resemble:
    <USERS>
    <USER>Tim Smith</USER>
    <ADDRESS>14 Main St</ADDRESS>
    <CITY>Denver</CITY>
    <STATE>CO</STATE>
    </USERS>

  • Keeping Temporary Files Around? Need properly formatted .ali file for a CHM help.

    As part of our localization process, I need to access the .ali file that is in the temporary folder. Back in RH 7, I could just copy the .ali file from the RH project, but in RH 9 it's now in an XML format and isn't in a format directly usable with CHM files. However, when RH compiles the CHM file, the .ali is changed into a format I need. Unfortunately, if I decompile the CHM file, the .ali file isn't there. So my only route is to grab it from the temporary build folder. If I'm compiling a large file, it's not a big deal because I have time to make a copy of the .h file in the temporary folder and paste it somewhere outside of the folder but for smaller projects the temporary folder is around for just a little while before it is removed.
    Does anyone know of a way to keep the temporary build folder around after compilation of a CHM file finishes so I can access this file?
    Thanks,
    Jared

    Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create a disk image and use the disk image to store the Mac files; they will keep their date and other Mac specific information. The disk image's contents cannot normally be used on a PC.
    There are other ways of doing this if the disk image method doesn't work for some reason; these include using this method of creating partitions, and installing MacDrive on the PCs.

  • Cannot properly format Western Digital 3.0 TB SATA drives

    Hi, I have purchased a few Western Digital 3.0TB Caviar® Green Hard Disk Drives and today have been attempting to format them. Unfortunately, they are only showing 800.79 GB available... after using Disk Utility on Intel based Mac(s) running 10.6.8. (specifically a 2010 Mini running 10.6.8 and a 2009 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac). I cannot find anything addressing this on any blog, let alone the Western Digital site. I am formatting them Mac OS Extended Journaled, GUID 1 partition. Am I doing something wrong or are other customers having similar problems?
    Sincerely,
    -ddscott57

    Very smart, thank you... My system utilizes several Mac Minis and I am therefore reliant on using their interfaces (which in this case is having to settle for USB 2, as my single Firewire ports are in use by a Canopus). I've been digging for more up to date 4 Bay Enclosure units but to no avail when it comes to having both the USB 2 option as well as the 3TB capability. Seems I'm gonna lose for now on the 3TB SATA purchases.
    Perhaps just purchase a single drive enclosure for the 3TB drive(s), if you can't return the drives.  But considering that HD prices are expected to rise due to shortages, I'd probably not return the drives.
    I have no experience with Canopus products, but I'm assuming that the Canopus has issues with daisychaining, similar to other high-end audio devices.  (If not, then obviously you can put the Canopus device at the end of the chain or get a Firewire hub.)  Perhaps you want to look at some sort of NAS enclosure, which would have faster transfer than USB (although not as fast as Firewire.)  This assumes you attach the Mini and the NAS to wired gigabit ethernet, and not Wi-Fi.
    edit: BTW, OWC's Mercury Pro Qx4 and Drobos appear to support 3TB drives.

  • Video not listing properly - format incompatible?

    Question regarding working with video files in lightroom from digital camera...
    Trying to find a workflow/format for converting videos from my digital camera (Canon 7d) and have these reside in lightroom.  So far I have not had any luck.
    Out of the camera, files are in .mov format and h.264. I am surprised at the size of the files. An 71 second clip takes over 400 mb for 1080p. I have spend several days looking for software to compress or adjust this file with minimal luck, either due to software or resulting video being incompatible in lightroom (mainly the later).
    Requirements are to keep format compatible with lightroom, minimal loss of quality (visually), reduced file size, and as universal a format as possible.
    I have nero 8 and tried Vision (included video editng software). It allows me to emport to mp4 avc, mp2, mp1 and several other flavors. I have tried various adjustments. Results were file sizes between 80mb to 170mb, but with issues in lightroom 3 (not fully recognizing the video file), playback smoothness, jumping/navigating within clip (ie, jumping to 40 second mark, then back to 30 second), and questionable quality (though most looked identical to original).
    I have also tried handbrake, Super encoder, Power Directory, Sony Vegas and several others, but no luck.
    The original file, plays smoothly, allows me to jump forward and back smoothly, and in Lightroom shows correctly and with extra detail due to sidecar file from camera (exif data).
    m4v out of handbrake shows fine in Lightroom with full preview.  Without original sidecar file, no exif is available (expected).  BUT, when playing the video, it is slow when skipping forward and back.
    mpg layer 2, preview is very small in Lightroom and when playing it stutters
    mp4 (multiple converters and few other formats) won't show in lightroom, get a triangle error saying "Lightroom has encountered problems reading photo" with no preview.
    I like Power Directory, but it only exports 2 usable formats, mp4, which are not compatible with Lightroom (see above), and h.264 format in .m2ts container (definately not compatible with lightroom or many other programs).
    Part of debugging this, I have completely uninstalled/reinstalled quicktime to see if that would resolve the preview issue in Lightroom (based on another post recommendation), but no luck.
    Any suggestions on what to do next?

    Well, I didn't think of doing that, but I tried it on Windows Media Player, it showed a complete duration of 18 minutes, but after the 3 minutes mark, the video stopped moving but the audio continued, just like in Media Player Classic, and I tried it on Quicktime, and again, it showed just the 3 minutes, exactly like Media Player Classic.

    If you  add the video clips to an iDVD slideshow and set the preferences to Scale photos to TV Safe area you can get rid of the overflow.  However, you may experience letterboxing of the clips:

  • External hard drive will not mount properly

    I have a 250GB western digital 3.5" hard drive in a IDE enclosure connected to my macbook through USB. I have used this setup for about a year now and have not had any problems up until recently. i upgraded to leopard last year, and i used this hard drive at one point as a time machine backup. i then erased all of my backups and used it to store regular data because i needed the extra space until i could transfer everything to DVD. anyways, the drive worked ok after that for about a month and then one day it stopped showing up as a volume on my desktop. when i plug it in then nothing at all happens. the drive appears in the disk utility but i cannot edit any features or preform first aid on it. when i unplug the drive i get these two horrible processes in activity monitor that use up 100 % of both my CUPs. they are
    syslogd
    mount_hfs
    i then have to force my computer to restart because it is breathing so loudly and heating up so much. anyways... i have tried running drive genius 2 but it doesnt recognize the drive either.
    other potentially useful information
    - FAT file system
    - does not work with windows (although windows does recognize the fact that it is connected.... does not appear in my computer directory)
    i would like to recover the information from this harddrive without formatting it. i would really appreciate it if anybody could offer me some advice that will solve my problem

    I can't offer any help regarding the problem you describe, but from reading your post, it seems the drive is formatted as FAT. Since you posted this in the Time Machine forum, I should point out that you can't use a FAT formatted drive with TM. It's strange that you say you used the drive for a while with TM. That can't be, unless TM reformatted it without you realizing it (TM will offer to prepare the disk the first time you try to use it with TM, if it's not properly formatted for TM, and this results in a reformat). But perhaps you reformatted it as FAT after you stopped using it with TM.
    At any rate, as for your current problem, you might post that in some other forum, as TM probably has nothing to do with this situation. You may have better luck getting help in the "Using Mac OS X Leopard " forum - just a suggestion.
