WD MyBook Studio Suddenly Slow. Sign of Failure?
Hey Guys.
I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio 3TB external hard drive that has suddenly slowed down dramatically.
I usually hook it up with FireWire 800, but both FireWire and USB is slow. I've hooked it up to another Macbook and it's still slow so i know it's a drive problem.
The speed is so slow it takes about 30 seconds for drive to load thumbnails, and videos do not even load.
I have read through many many forums but still unable to find a fix. I have a lot of important Data on this drive that i cannot lose. It's basically everything digital i have/own.
Details that may help
-2010 27" iMac i7.
-I have owned this external drive for about 6 months, and it has been working perfectly.
-There was a power outage a couple of days ago, it worked fine immediately after but the problems started yesterday.
-Currently, the drive is about 1tb used and 2tb free.
-I've tried PRAM reset, different cables, removing the drive from index, pretty much everything i found on forums but no luck.
-drive not making any odd noises or clicks.
Please help as i cannot afford to lose the data on this drive.
The drive could be failing, I would get something besides another WD MyBook and back it up ASAP.
I build my own External Hard Drives and backup all my data to multiple drives, one daily, one weekly and one in the fire safe.

Windows 7: "Lightroom has experienced an unexpected Sign In failure. Please try again later."
Lightroom sync with the iPad app had been working wonderfully for me. Suddenly, in the Windows desktop app, I'm signed out, and trying to sign in results in, "Lightroom has experienced an unexpected Sign In failure. Please try again later." To my knowledge nothing changed on my PC to trigger this issue, and I had been using the sync multiple times daily when the error suddenly cropped up. Creative Cloud remains cheerfully signed in.
Other Mac-related threads mention a similar error that includes something to the effect of "(attempt to index a nil value)," but that parenthesized message does NOT appear in this case, and needless to say the Mac solution that has been posted for this problem (http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/error-unexpected-sign-failure-occurs.html) doesn't apply to a PC.
Any suggestions/solutions would be appreciated. Thanks!
Update 4/29/14: After having changed nothing, I am able to sign in to Lightroom again (although the sign in does not persist when I close Lightroom). I had a case pending with Adobe support, that had been escalated; perhaps over the past day they did something behind the scenes to solve my primary sign-in issue, but if so, they didn't communicate it to me.
Message was edited by: DoNotWantAScreenNameI got the same error in Windows 7. Here's what I found - jump ahead if you find the technical terms confusing.
For me, it turned out to be a network configuration problem related to IPv6, as Ary Gunawan has said. In simple terms, Windows claims that it has a working IPv6 setup, and therefore Lightroom tries to connect to an IPv6 address instead of an old-school IPv4 one, and that fails.
I haven't been able to establish with certainty if it is a local problem in my network config, or related to my ISP, or if Adobe screwed up. What I do know is that Lightroom returns an extremely unhelpful error message, doesn't provide an error log of any sort, and fails to switch to IPv4 when there is an problem.
Disabling IPv6 support in Windows worked for me, but may cause unwanted side effects because Windows relies on it (says Microsoft). It's better to make Windows prefer IPv4, but leave IPv6 in place.
So I fixed it with a tool called "Prefer IPv4 over IPv6" (Microsoft Fix it 50410), available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2533454 . After running it and rebooting, LR did work.
If you try the fix but need to go back to the Windows default configuration for whatever reason, just run the tool "Prefer IPv6 over IPv4" from the same page.

I am using DVDsp vers.3 on a G5 dual 2.0Ghz processor with 2.5GB ram.
I use the "build in background" preference when I import a 45 minute Qt video file (16:9 anamomorphic)for encoding. I have used this basic method for several years but all of a sudden the process is very slow, taking 4 hrs or longer to encode the 45 min.video before ever beginning the muxing process. The Mac console lists a "CGContextSaveGState2" problem but I don't know if this is related to sudden slow down. Does anyone have an idea what would cause the slow down?Nick, thank you, good idea to keep things clean. apps in the final cut studio often seem to benefit from trashing prefs, too.

An application I have used for years suddenly slowed down.
A CAD application I have used for years suddenly slowed down to a crawl. It is virtually unusable. My other apps seem ok.
The application in question runs under Rosetta since it is a PPC app.
I have plenty of disk space and nothing obvious has changed. Any ideas how to resolve this problem will be appreciated.

Reset the printing system:
- Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
- Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

after upgrading from OS X Mountain Lion to OS X Mavericks my external HDD "WD MyBook Studio Edition II" configured as RAID 1 with two 3 TB disks "WD30EFRX" connected with FireWire 800 was empty and renamed to "MyBook" --> ALL MY DATA ARE GONE
I lost all my photos and movies of my family and my kids from the last 20 years !!!
Are there any chances to get the data back?
PatrickWD is aware of this issue and issued a email notice.
You have a choice of two options, provided there is no encryption used.
1: Take your hardware to a local PC/Mac tech that they specialize in data recovery, should be able to change things to make the RAID 1 into single drive(s).
2: Install Data Rescue and run a pass, it ignores things and direct reads the bits for any signs of files it can recover, since RAID 1 is a mirror only, your files are complete. (unlike RAID 0)
Data Rescue is free to download and run a pass to determine if it can recover files, but it's $99 to recover. They have excellent support.

How good are the WD MyBook Studio Ed. Refurbished Replacements?
I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition for Mac - External Hard Drive that is 2 years old, and has started to have problems.
It keeps running constantly and gets very warm. I unplug the cables from it, let it cool for a few minutes, replug the cables, and do a forced backup.... but the next scheduled backup, it starts up and will keep running for hours without doing the backup.
So I unplug it again, let it rest, replug, then do a forced backup, and everything repeats itself as previously mentioned.
I called WD Support this morning, and she said that I could send it in, and they would send me a refurbished replacement. I have read on other forums (tools, etc.) that people send items in for a replacement, and they get back a refurbished unit that is all banged up, and doesn't work properly.
My question is... how good is the WD refurbished replacements that they send back. Are they in good condition? Does anyone have any experience with WD on this?
I have even thought of just getting a new external HD from another company, (G-Drive, LaCie, etc), but I have seen mixed reviews on them. I like the G-Drive Solid State (no moving parts) but that is over $500.... too rich for my blood.
Any recommendations on either question.

JimFrom what I've read on the internet WD offer poor customer service and their products are of low quality. Certainly I have experienced first-hand many WD hard drives failing, mostly with the dreaded click click click. I've only known two or three Seagates go this way in all the years I've been using hard drives (pretty much since the early days of 120MB).
It may be expensive, but I highly recommend the ReadyNAS Duo as a backup solution and / or as general network storage. I have one set up with two 1TB Seagate NS drives in mirrored mode and it works very well. Seagate NS drives are enterprise-standard, designed for use in RAID hardware where they will be in close proximity to one another, Seagate AS drives are not designed for this purpose and so may fail in this situation. Other hard drive manufacturers make enterprise-grade drives too, I'm guessing that the ones WD use in their MyBook products are not these drives though which might explain why there are so many failures. The enterprise-grade drives typically cost about £20 more but I think for reliable backup purposes it's well worth the extra expense. -
10.7.5 suddenly slows and then freezes
My computer has just started to suddenly slow way down and then it freezes completely. When I reboot it seems fine, for perhaps 10 minutes or half an hour, but then it starts to lock up again. Any idea what the problem is? Here is my EtreCheck report:

I bought a replacement drive and am restoring my time machine back up now.
I am a bit annoyed that the B&H guys got this one wrong but I have to give them credit for underselling me rather than overselling me; I do appreciate that.
Also worth mentioning is that the 3TB Seagate drive was less than 2 years old and is supposedly still under warrantee. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of support I get from them.
So big thanks to you, Bob, for your very good suggestions. The Apple community has come through strong for me and I appreciate it. -

Sudden slow down in data transfer
I'm reading data from the hard disk on a Target PXI System (8106 RT) and sending it via Ethernet to a Host PC and writing it to its hard disk. I read a chuck of data from the Target, send it using TCP Write function. The Host uses the TCP Read function get the data and write it to its hard disk. Data is being transfer over a Gbit Ethernet. A total of 9 files ranging in size from 700 MB - 2 GB are being transferred. The process moves along at an adequate speed until it suddenly slows down to slower than a snail's pace in the middle of a file.
By using probes (see enclosures) I've been able to determine it take approximately 17 seconds between when the data is read on the PXI to when it is written on the Host. However, an iteration of the loop on the Target has increased to over 3 minutes. The CPU usage on the Target and Host are minimal, less than 1%. Memory usage on the Host is also small. Any suggestions on how to diagnose what has caused this sudden slow down?

Slide3.PNG 39 KBI would recommend using smaller chunk sizes for your data transfers. I would recommend something inthe 10K to 50K range. I have done quite a bit of profiling for sending large amounts of data and I have found that it is better to send lots of smaller chunks rather than fewer large chunks. Also make sure that you are not automatically building up large buffers in your application if you are using shift registers. If you are reading from a file read the file in chunks and send the chuncks. Don't read the whole file in in one read. One experiment I ran resulted in a single read of a large file (2 MB or so) took something like 10 minutes to read it in one read. However it only took a couple of 100 ms to read the whole thing in 10K chunks. Same applies to wrinting very large chunks using the TCP write. You can easily get a timeout if you write 1 MB as a single write because the receiver has not consumed all of the data within the timeout period. However, multiple small writes will reset the timeout for each chunk written.

Mac suddenly slow, overheating, spinning ball of death, hard to reboot.
Problem description:
Mac suddenly slowed down, especially when using Safari - spinning ball of death, pages won’t load, etc. Hard drive appeared to get “stuck” causing overheating and had trouble even shutting down with the button, and then wouldn’t reboot for about an hour.
This is a Mid-2010 Mac Mini with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Running OSX 10.9.5
Safari is 7.1.4
We updated to Mavericks but not Yosemite.

We hooked up the external HD, turned on Time Machine, and everything backed up.
Then we ran Disk Utility. The disk repair required the reboot thing and took two tries. Then repaired permissions. Also updated Flash.
Seems to be running okay now, but we have ordered a new SSD (as well as a new iMac 5k ). We use multiple computers so hoping we can get a couple more years of use out of this old computer as it ran fast and fine until this problem.

Sudden slow down after an auto-shutdown - kernel_task running hot.
Hi,
I was playing Braid on supremely low battery, and my MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011) running 10.7.2, automatically turned off. Plugged it into the charger and went to bed. Booted it up next morning and it is so incredibally slow. No warning, no gradual slow down, just all of a sudden. No peripherals attached at all.
Checked my Activity Monitor, kernal_task is running at 330mbs, from what I've seen that is pretty bad. That's the only thing I can see that is out of the ordinary.
Anyone want to take a stab at the cause of this sudden slow down? It's making using my laptop very very tedious.Note: In Safe Mode kernal_task is running at 220mbs. Is that a clue? I don't know.

I purchased a MyBook Studio 4gb external hard drive. I can't get it to work properly. WD have assessed it and say its fine and that the problem is with Apple? Any ideas?

So in Disk Utility, with the external harddrive selected, go to the Partition tab, and then under "Partition Layout:" select 1 Partition.
After than, verify that it is formatting the drive as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) under "Partition Information"
Also verify that it's using using the GUID Partition Map under the Options button at the lower left of this window.
Then click apply and confirm that you want to format the drive. It will ask you if you're sure, and probably for an Administrator password.
Once your harddrive is formatted properly, you should be able to use Time Machine, or any other Mac backup software.

What do I do when a file suddenly slows down? It takes 20 to 30 seconds for one sentence of text to slowly appear on the screen after I type it.
Problem is associated with one chapter (file) in a book of twenty. The other 19 are fine. Same symptoms when the same file is opened in another computer.
I tried starting with a new, blank chapter, copied and pasted the text and the problem reappeared.

I don't know if the problem is associated with a photo I place into the file, or with some text, or what.
Please help, very frustrating to not be able to work.

Hi! I did reset SMC but it did not work but thank you. Now, my hard drive crashed, bought a new one, but unfortunately my laptop does not detect the new hard drive so that where I'm at. Im not sure if I need to format the hard drive, replace an internal part like the connector of the hard drive to the logic board or the new hard drive is broken.
