WD Mybook

I have a 3TB external WD MyBook hard drive with data on it from my previous PC. I am new to MAC and am unfamiliar with the inner workings. I plugged it up to my Macbook Pro retina so that I can use it as a backup due to only having 128 of flash storage as well as wanting to import my former iTunes library. However I cannot seem to get it to copy files from one to the other or have it back up without erasing all data already on the drive. I understand that I can partition the drive to have part MAC and part Windows on the drive but any help going further would be greatly appreciated.

That is correct. The WD is formatted in NTFS. A Mac can read NTSF but not natively write to it. There are apps like
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
That allow a Mac to write to NTSF.
However, if you are going to use TimeMachine for backup it has to be formatted in Mac format

  • Why do I have 2 icons for WD Mybook Edition II?

I have two icons on my desktop title line (don't know if this is correct name for the top horizontal bar) for my WD Mybook Edition II backup.  I had a problem with the WD a few months ago and I somehow got it fixed but am unsure how that happened.  Now I notice the two WD icons and don't know what to do with them.  I don't know how to delete one of the icons or even if I should delete one of them.  Each icon, when I hover over them, have the same information about version number, etc. in them.
There is a notice at the top of this discussion space that says, "A recovered version of this content exists from Jul 12, 2013 10:46 AM.  Would you like to use the recovered version or delete it?".  I'm not even sure what content that is referring to, or whether I should "use recovered" or "delete recovered".  I hope someone can help sort this out for me.

Ok.  Thanks.  I will see if I can see evidence of a duplicate and delete it.  Or I will call WD.  I looked into WDs Q&As and couldn't find an appropriate response.  There was a comment that they did not answer questions if you used Apple Time Machine - which I do.  I do remember having a problem where I had an alert about the WD MyBook and to run the manager.  I didn't know what that was so tried to find it.  Without really understanding what I did, the alert disappeared and the WD Mybook was working again.  It wasn't until now that I noticed the double icons.
I really appreciate your responses.  I'll look into your suggestions to see if I can find some way to get rid of the extra.

  • Airport Extreme "seeing" WD MyBook HD but displaying 0 MB and no files

I have a WD MyBook for Mac connected to my Airport Extreme via USB and it is set up appropriately from the many other forums I have read. However, it displays the WD HD w/ a different name than I assigned it with 0MB and does not let me navigate the external hard drive.
I am able to connect to the HDD directly with my computer and manage it. WD MyBook is formatted for a mac with HFS+J. Another thread was created for this issue with no solution (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1770095)
Please help me with any information you can. A step by step guide from the very beginning that mentions my same set up would also be great.
    Thank you,

Have you powered down and restarted the drive? Also restart other devices on the network?

  • IMac no longer recognizes MyBook after unplugging it without ejecting first

I recently got an iMac and had backed up my information to a MyBook external hard drive. It recognized it with no problem until I accidentally unplugged it before ejecting it. Now the MyBook doesn't show up at all, anywhere. How can I get my computer to re-recognize the MyBook?

Hi. Thank you for your response. I actually didn't get to test it out because before going to bed, I shut everything down, unplugged it, and said a prayer. (All of which I had done earlier in various combinations, except the prayer part.) This morning I plugged the computer in, turned it on, held my breath, and plugged the MyBook in - it recognized it and I downloaded everything onto my iMac before it could change its mind.
I'll keep a copy of your reply so that I know what to do the next time I pull a stunt like this.
Thanks, again, for the help response.

  • Time Machine backup from external drive to MyBook World

I'd like to back up my external flex drive (w/ about 350gig of pictures) to my 1TB MyBook World which is connected directly to my router (and not my laptop).
My Macbook Pro recognized the drives, I seemed to have everything set up ok. When I went to do my backup I realized that the estimated total backup was only 60gig... clearly the external wasn't included. I went to see the files that were showing as excluded in options & that drive was there. I deleted it from external & in options, the new backup size looked perfect.
Then when I went to actually run the backup, it says Backing up 1.32 gig of 60.67 gig again. When I go back to Options it looks correct in there.
Am I missing something? Keep in mind that I've only been using a mac for a week & 1/2 so I'm still trying to catch up on knowledge.

Thanks for your suggestion. I don't use iPhoto (I use LR and Photoshop & both were closed).
I called apple care support & he said to let it run through the initial backup (which indicates that I only have 60 Gig to backup instead of 400ish Gig) and then to call them back. I will wait until the first backup is completed (hopefully today) and then I may try your suggestion.
The exclusions initially included my external drive and I noticed it right after the backup started. I stopped the initial backup, removed the external from the exclusion list & then restarted the backup... but it was still showing a very small backup. I guess it could have somehow got messed up.
    Again, thanks for the suggestion.

  • Moving Garageband Music Files to MyBook for Mac External Hard Drive on OSX 10.5.8  I'm a musician and need to make space on my mac hd. Is it safe to move music files there and delete them on the mac? Thanks!

use a MyBook for Mac external hard drive.
I need space on garageband or the entire hard drive, since I am getting the "need space on the hard drive" messages.
It's scary to move my precious music files!
How should I move them to the external and feel safe about doing so?
Or are there other methods besides the obvious, clearing caches, deleting the trash and downloads, etc., that are recommended?
I am doing music now and producers are waiting for the new vocals!
    Help!
    Thanks!

The process is as simple as just copying your Garageband project to the external drive and deleting from the macs hard drive. But before you delete anything you really need to back them up to someplace else also. Having just one copy is not safe. Get another external drive, DVDs or even flash drives, you absolutely need anything important in more then one place.

  • Partitioning a MyBook to use with fcp... can it be Mac Extended and FAT32?

Hi, I'm a film student and a little while ago I just bought a MyBook 1T external hard drive (USB only).
I'm looking into reformatting my hard drive because when capturing with fcp (straight to the hard drive) I keep getting an error at around 9 minutes.
I did some research and found out that its because its formatted to FAT32 instead of Mac Extended.
However, I do a lot of work with PC's and transferring files on my hard drive and I read that once formatted to Mac Extended my hard drive would not work on a PC.
I was wondering if I partitioned my MyBook would I be able to make one part Mac Extended (for my capture scratch files) and one part FAT32 (that I could use like a regular hard drive for files between Mac and PC)?
Also just to be clear once the hard drive is Mac Extended I can still keep other files besides capture scratch files in that portion of the hard drive, it's just I can't transfer those particular files to PC. (Some of the website forums I read made me more confused haha)
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Kyle

@ nick would that let me capture my footage to my hard drive without having to babysit
NTFS does not have the file size limit silliness that FAT has so you should be OK in theory.
Run a couple of test captures and see what you think.
USB is generally not a good interface for video as it delivers data in bursts. You need a constant stream as provided by FireWire or SATA drives. If you are working with low bandwidth video codecs such as DV, you might get away with it for a while.

  • Time Capsule vs. WD MyBook World Edition?

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of TC vs. WD's MyBook World Edition? I Googled and found only one review, but it was too "techy" for me to understand.
I know the MyBook doesn't have a router, but even if I add the cost of buying one, it works out to about $50 less than a TC at BestBuy. Moreover, keeping the HD and router separate lowers risk of losing both if one goes.
I won't be doing much with open source and other firmware etc. I am likely to be using the product as-is. So, please respond recognizing that I am not very tech-savvy. I will be using three Macs--an older MacBook Pro (Leopard), a MacPro QuadCore (PowerPC, Tiger), and new MacBook Pro (SL).
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

If you're thinking of using Time Machine with it, be aware that TM doesn't work well, if at all, with most NAS devices: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
WD claims it's compatible with Time Machine (and has an update for it on their web site): http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=587
    I'd recommend searching both the +Leopard > Time Machine+ and +Snow Leopard> Time Machine+ forums for it.

  • Time Machine back up to MyBook (2TB).

When Time Machine backs up to WD MyBook (2TB), it transfers 100GB of my iMac HD (500GB capacity) each time. Consequently, MyBook is full. How do I get Time Machine to only add changes/alterations to the next backup?

Thanks again rkaufmann. I have successfully deleted all files from MyBook. Unfortunately, I now have a large number of large files in my Trash that I am having trouble deleting. However, my initial problem is resolved. I will try to find a way of getting TM to only apply updates to existing files on MB.

  • Has anyone used Mountain Lion with Time Machine for the WD MyBook Live Duo

This NAS is working with OSX Lion.  But since I had trouble moving up to Lion with my previous WD NAS drive, I want to make sure that it works.
    Thanks

Upgraded to Mavericks yesterday.  Seems to have gone well except for one thing.  My computer will not recognized my WD MyBook Live 3T and thus Time Machine will not work with it.  My wife's MacBook Pro is still running 10.6.8 and her computer is still working properly and doing back ups.  Called Western Digital Tech support and Apple Tech Support.  Not much helpl there.  I attempted to download and use the newest sofware (during Mavericks installation I did get a warning that the old WD software was not supported).  However, one of the first steps is getting the software to scan for the backup drive.  No dice.  The computer is not recognizing its existence at all in any place you might look.  So I am stuck and frustrated at this point.  I have plugged and unplugged things.  The MyBook Live is hooked up directly by ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme router.  My computer is hooked up by ethernet cable to the router and my wife's laptop uses the WiFi connection.  Apple Tech suggested a direct hookup to my computer.  My computer still would not recognize it.

  • Recent convert to Apple. Previously, I backed up my family pictures from PC to an external hard drive,  a WD MyBook 3T. I can view the pics on my Macbook Pro, but I can't add new pictures. I'm sure this is a format issue, any easy way to correct it?

    Install NTFS 3G
    http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/
If you were going to be reading and writing to a NTFS System Partition, you might have to worry about the instability messing up the operating system.  However, you are reading/writing from a non system, backup device so you don't have to worry about screwing up an operating system.
I would still temporarily move my data to another device and reformat the drive for Mac OS X Extended.

  • WD MyBook External Hard Drive No Longer Showing Up

After the Yosemite update, I can no longer see my Western Digital MyBook external hard drive when I plug it into my MacBook. I've been up and back between Apple Support and the WD support forums for about three weeks now and I'm not seeing anything helpful about this situation. I cannot access a bunch of stuff because of this problem. No one is saying whether or not it will be addressed at all let alone supplying a solution... Does anyone have any info at all about this?

If TM is turned on and it still doesn't show up then do a SMC reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Backup.app problems when trying to restore from a MYBOOK drive FAT32

I recently purchased a MYBOOK external drive and used backup.app in (Max OS X Vers 10.4) to backup my iphoto files. When I went to restore the files, the restore failed.
I was unaware (when I used backup.app with the MYBOOK destination) that I probably should have reformatted the drive in MAC extended (journal) instead of leaving it in FAT32. I think this is likely the problem.
I have also recently upgraded to Leopard, which seems to be working fine.
Does anyone know how I can retrieve my photos that are sitting out in the external drive (about 30GB of data.....)

If all else fails, you could go to the backup folder itself, right click on it, and fish around to find your JPEG files. Inelegant but you'll be able to get them... the fact that's a FAT32 file won't affect the JPEG files themselves (they don't have resource forks).
Once you have all your data off there I'd definitely suggest you reformat it as HFS+ (Journaled). In fact, to use Time Machine, you must reformat the drive.

  • MyBook 4TB visible in WD software but not in My computer

What could be wrong? WD Drive Utilities shows MyBook but it isn't visible in My computer, Adobe Bridge, etc.

I don't think I have a password on it, I'm just starting to use it. Computer clearly knows that it's connected, it makes connecting and disconnecting sounds and in control panel the drive can also be found.  I just looked at WD Smartware and it says "No writeable partition found". Why?

  • I am unable to set my WD mybook world edition (white light) for time machine.

I have new iMac running OS X Mavricks 10.9 and a WD mybook world edition (white light) connected via eithernet to router.
I am unable to set up time machine using this drive.
I can see the MyBookWorld drive in Finder and read and write files with no problems.  I can also see the MyBookWorld_Backup drive but I am unable to connect.
Time machine can see the drive but when I select, use drive, it trys to connect and gives me an error message: There was a problem connecting to the server "MyBookWorld-Backup"
I have already updated the hardrive firmware.
    Any ideas?

WD and their lack of support for Mavericks:
A recent email from WD reads:
    Dear WD Registered Customer,
    UPDATE: November 1st, 2013
As a valued WD customer we want to make you aware of new reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications. Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks and are experiencing difficulty in accessing your external hard drive, please do not save anything to the drive, disconnect the drive from your computer, and contact Western Digital Customer Service at http://support.wd.com/country/ for further assistance.
The WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years. However, solely as a precaution WD has removed these applications from our website as we investigate this issue.
    Sincerely,
    Western Digital
Which is basically Western Digital informing you that their out-of-date utilities don’t support Mavericks.
In any case those utilities are not the most effective. The moral of the story is: the first thing you should do after buying a WD drive is to format it as HFS Extended (Journaled) and not install ANY of their utilities but instead use reliable applications like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper - or Time Machine.

  • WD MyBook won't mount after 10.7.4 installation

I have a Western Digital MyBook 1 TB external USB drive that has worked fine for years. I used it a day and a half ago under 10.7.3 with absolutely no problems. I then upgraded to 10.7.4, and now the drive won't mount. It spins up for a second or two, then powers off. Console shows the following:
    5/17/12 11:31:55.000 AM kernel: USBF:
    4544.789
[0xffffff800aa42400] The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 1 of Hub at 0x4000000)
    5/17/12 11:31:58.000 AM kernel: USBF:
    4547.797
[0xffffff800aa42400] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.
Do I have a borked installation of 10.7.4? Would a simple re-install fix the problem? It seems highly unlikely to me that the drive just happened to silently die in the interim between its last use and the 10.7.4 install... What's going on?

I tried repairing disk permissions, but no dice. I still get these errors in the console:
    5/18/12 12:05:42.000 PM kernel: USBF:
    169.760
[0xffffff800aa93600] The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 2 of Hub at 0x6000000)
    5/18/12 12:05:45.000 PM kernel: USBF:
    172.774
[0xffffff800aa93600] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.
I also tried reinstalling 10.7.4 using a different method: the first time around, I copied the InstallESD.dmg file to a hard drive partition and installed from there. The second time, I just ran the installer app from the main HD and let it do its thing. The second method seemed to take longer; I wonder if it was going through the files to see which ones needed to be updated or not. Still no positive result.
I really wish Apple hadn't removed the Archive & Install feature. I really liked that.  : /
As for the combo updater, I can't use the combo updater because my installer is the 10.7.4 installer from the App Store. I don't have access to an earlier version, unless there's some way to get Apple to let me download a previous version from the App Store. (I would think that having a pull-down menu on the page for Lion to select which version to download would be a no-brainer, but I guess not. I just submitted a feature request on the feedback page for OS X, but beyond that, I don't know what else I can do...)
