WD Passport Elite making a "ticking" sound, OS freezes until HD unplugged

Hi!
I've just got a WD Passport Elite 320GB USB2.0 external HD.
It almost works fine.
I've run into some weird problems:
- I left my MBP over night (backing up) and when I came back the HD just made a repeating ticking sound. When I opened the HD volume from the desktop no files showed up, Finder freezed, Cmd-Alt-Esc didn't work. Everything came back when I physially unplugged the HD. (Although the backup did succeed.)
- When I go into Time Machine it sometimes hangs too. Same thing - I have to unplug the HD.
(- I had a lot of problem with Time Machine before I found out it doesn't support Master Boot Record-HDs. You'd think TM would warn you :/ Anyhow, I reset the Spotlight db. Maybe it's related.)
Has anyone had any similar experiences?
Could it be that the power-supply via USB isn't enough? (How can I check that?)
The HD has 2 x HFS+ journaled partitions, GUID table.
I'm using the left USB port on the MBP. I've tried unchecking "Put hard drives to sleep when possible". I haven't had that much time to test it yet though. I'm gonna take this HD on the road in a while, we'll see how it handles I guess.
**** I remember the good old days when uptime used to say something like 24 days.. I guess those days are gone.. sigh

Hmm, that is interesting that he usb ports are different - are you saying they have different power outputs?
I also have the Passport, and it connects and runs no problem on my MacBook Pro. But if I connect it to my older Powerbook, it just clicks and does not mount. Another Passport I had did exactly the same thing. Not sure what usb I was using though.
I would love to know more about this if there is any more info available.

  • What does it mean when my computer starts making a ticking noise

My computer (im on my brothers computer right now) is making a ticking sound on startup. Then it brings me to a screen that shows a blinking file with a question mark on it. I put in the grey disk and it took me to a screen that asked to choose a destination but there was no options to choose so i quit the installer but then it took me to another screen that had 2 options. The disk that is inside the computer and then network startup. I chose network startup and it then asked me to restart. So i did and now the computer is in the middle of restarting. Now it took my back to the Mac OS X page and is asking me to choose a language again...

More than likely the hard drive is failing or failed.

  • MBP gives ticking sound.

My MBP's [probably Hard-disk] is making some ticking sound. Why?
I showed my MBP to an Apple Reseller, who told me, that it is in warrenty, and he can't do anything, now I had another problem, when-ever I lift it or keep it down from some height, there is an tick sound, what should I do?

As suggested in the last post of the discussion:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2326286?start=0&tstart=0
The sound has nothing to do with the hard drive nor the battery charging. I can hear it even when the MBP is off and disconnected from power supply.
I've oppened my MBP few times recently for memory upgrade, and noticed there were some springs comming from the electric circuit (for the ground, i think) that touch the bottom case. I suspect that those springs are responsible for those clicks you hear when the bottom case is slightly bended.

  • TS1382 my ipod classic is making weird ticking noises

My ipod classic keeps turning on and off by itself, and is making weird ticking noises. What do I do!?

The ticking noise is the sound of the hard drive being started up and the stopped. This is normal.
What do you mean by "turning on and off by itself"? Do you mean the ticking noises (which is normal) or do you mean the display turns on and off, or do you mean the music turns on and off?

  • Imac 2012 making feint ticking noise?

There is a feint ticking sound coming from the bottom of the apple logo on my imac 27. it dosen't sound threatning, but it dosent sound like it should be making this noise either. when i switch to bootcamp and use windows, the ticking sound goes away and everythings quiet. it only turns on if i am using apples osx mountain lion. anyone know why?

Hi, does it sound like Hard Drive activity?
Maybe Spotlight faoling & constantly using the drive?
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • My macbook pro makes every 3 seconds a ticking sound

    Hello everybody
i've bought my macbook pro 3 months ago and he is making all the time a ticking sound. sometimes it's quiet but sometimes it's also very loud. it comes from the left side of my mac and i think it's a fan. could somebody help me please??
    thank you
    Quentin

The fans on the MacBook are located approximately under the top left and right corners of the keyboard, and vent out the back of the system. When you hear the ticking, try moving your ear to the back hinge of the system and see if it's more notable there. Additionally, check to see if you can feel any venting happening. It may be that you have a broken fan that needs replacing.
Is the ticking a bit random, or does it happen at regular 3-second intervals? Additionally, does it happen if you boot the system to Safe Mode (hold the Shift key at startup), or in the OS X Recovery mode (hold the Command-R keys at startup)?

  • WD Passport Elite Ext Drive and iMacs?

I bought a WD Passport Elite (500GB). It is a portable drive that is supposed to work with Windows and Macs.
I just hooked it up tonight using the USB 2.0 it came with and plugged it into the back of my iMac (10.4.11). The icon shows up in my Finder window and the desktop. I clicked on the installer and it said it installed properly. I also installed the WD Anywhere Backup 2.2.98 app. It walked me through the steps, I chose to back-up almost everything (just lost all of my data on my HD with only CD back-ups on some files so I'm being extra cautious). It showed me that everything seemed to install smoothly, etc. There were several other files and apps included in the folder that loaded as soon as a plugged in the drive, but I'm waiting to see whether I need them--some, I believe, are for Windows.
A window showing "Processing scanned files" and a wheel turning has been running for several hours but the icon within that window shows: 0 stored (0.0 bytes) 465.0 GB Free.
Does this mean that nothing has been going on while this wheel has been going around?
When I click on anything within the window it gives me a dull thunk sound (like "don't bother me now").
The install didn't go as described on the WD website--it said it would load everything automatically once I simply plugged in the ext. hard drive. I did read that sometimes Mac users have to manually install the software and there would be steps to follow, but I didn't see any (except those for the "Anywhere Back Up" app.) However, as I said, I got "installation was a success" messages.
What do I do now? Is there a way to check that everything is okay? Maybe there something in the other apps and files that came with drive that I still need to load--but I'm getting no instructions on what I should or shouldn't install or open. Should I be using a FireWire? (I have a built-in High Speed USB).
    Thanks!
    G

You could wait for some other suggestion, but in the time it might take to get one, the zero should be complete, and it sure can't hurt to re-zero a two-year old HD. I'd assume that it probably has some bad sectors by now.
I can only hope this solves the problem for you, as it's my only idea. Assuming that you were using migration assistant, the last time I used it six months ago, I think I recall that it started out at a very slow speed, then picked up, so perhaps it just needs to settle into a rhythm of sorts, or however data transfer works.
It seems to me, the other thing I recall is that the amount of data transferred wasn't visibly updating in real time, that there was a lag - maybe click on the screen to get it to show the updated amount and current speed.?? It's not something I do every day, so it's just something sticking in my mind:)

  • Why is my ipod making a clicking sound?

All-of-a-sudden my ipod stopped working. It will not charge or reset. When I plug it into the wall or computer it starts
making this clicking sound. It has shown the sadpod icon and the ! with a file. As well it shows the icon for when the battery is completly discharged. I tried charging it for hours, but it just keeps on ticking. I've not found help on the support site that has worked. I've tried hitting it, but that hasn't worked either. What should i do? It was purchased oct. 05.

If you have tried the support help and nothing has worked, then you should take advantage of your warranty and send it for service.
    Service request.
However, if you tried "hitting it" who knows what extra damage you caused? The iPod is a fragile device, and using force on an iPod that's still under warranty is, in my humble opinion, not very clever.
Because of this, Apple may refuse to repair it.

  • Iphone 5 ticking sound when you shake it

Iphone5 black 32gb Vzw. Mine started making very light ticking sound around the top of iphone 5. After 2 weeks now i can hear even louder sound. sounded like of a piece inside phone is moving around from left corner to right. I'm at apple store now getting replaced. They said many complaints on that but mine sounded significant.

Today when I was at the apple store, I tried both white & black iphone 5s and shook it all and they all had ticking sound towards to top of the phone. Mine had little louder and more significant sound; sounded like small piece is lose inside phone and moving within confined space. According to genius in apple store, many complaint about this issue and he claims that the sound is coming from the power button on the top. My new replacement had less noticable sound but the ticking is still there......... new replace also came with 4 scuffs ............ right out of the box!!!!!

  • CWMS - 60 Hz ticking sound on calls

    Hello CWMS Followers:
We have a problem on some calls where our CWMS 1.5.1.131.A install is experiencing a background 60 Hz ticking sound.  The sound comes and goes on the calls.  The sound doesn't appear to follow a particular user.  By this I mean, everyone hears the sound.  Muting users hasn't helped.  The Webex user interface doesn't show which user is producing the audio.  I would expect to see one user making noise and the user that is speaking change to the new user, back and forth.
We have the following breakdown of users:
5 people on internal SIP G729.
5 people on Verizon Cell (Dialing into SIP Gateway)
1 person on AT&T - (Dialing into SIP Gateway)
1 person on Landline (Dialing into SIP Gateway)
I am open to suggestions on how to debug further.
    Thank you
    David

    Hi David,
What is the size of your deployment?
Is the issue reproducible at will?
In order to identify if CWMS is the one introducing the ticking sound or something else, you would need to enable packet capture on switchports connecting to Media VMs of your CWMS solution.
Once capturing is enabled, reproduce the issue.
Once the issue is reproduced, collect the packet capture for the time of the issue, and generate Meeting Particular Logs for the affected meeting, as well as Overall System Logs for the time of the issue.
With captures and logs, include the information about the ANIs of the users in the call and details about the issue and open a TAC case.
Based on logs, we would have to identify the sockets for each RTP audio stream between participants and CWMS, use these sockets to filter packet captures and recover RTP audio streams and listen to them to see if the ticking sound was coming from a single participant and then just distributed by CWMS to everyone else, or it was CWMS that was introducing the problem.
Also, there is a CWMS 1.5.1.323A Maintenance Release 3 that addresses some known issues with audio quality (but not anything similar to 60Hz ticking sound).
    I hope this will help.

  • Faint click/tick sounds near the trackpad area

Hi, I have a week old Macbook Pro i5. It makes light click/tick sort of noises somewhere around the trackpad/keyboard area. I am not able to figure out where and when exactly the sound comes from. It is similar to a sound that would be created when you gently tap on a glass door with a metal piece. It is sort of random and doesn't seem like hard drive noises. Although the sound is not that annoying, I am little bit concerned that it might exacerbate in future. Anyone else noticed a similar issue?

There are actually 2 of those brackets by the way. I believe if you just open up the bottom lid then just apply it back on by hand, it would keep any moving parts from rubbing. When I first opened it, I noticed there was a mark on the inside of the bottom lid made by the one of the fan. Which allows to me to believe that Apple assembled that MBPs too tight. Therefore, causing some parts to rub. I can't be 100% sure what is making the clicking sounds, those little brackets things does make sense but I"m still not too sure. However, I do know that as soon as I removed the lid, I notice the sound is gone when I apply pressure or move the machine. I would say this isn't too much of a concern as far as for the health of the machine but it is a bit annoying.

  • Ticking sound

When it starts up or awakes from sleep, there is a fairly loud, ticking sound that comes from the back of the computer/monitor. It lasts several minutes and then gets softer, and then goes away. Is this normal?

That's the miniature thermo-nuclear device that comes implanted in all new iMacs. It is accessing the purchase date which is stored permanently on the hard drive. The day after your 1-year limited warranty expires it explodes, rendering your Mac unusable. Its the new guaranteed resale plan! Customers for life.
Hi Buddyc and welcome to the World of Macintosh! Congrats on the new iMac Intel.
My iMac Intel is quiet as a church mouse. That definitely "sounds" to be a hardware issue that should be covered by your 1 year warranty. I suggest you call Apple Care or take it to the closest Apple Store for warranty service. If you go to a store, I suggest calling and making sure that you have an appointment if one is necessary.

My ipod classic has started making a mewling sound and all it does is scroll through the songs.  It does not play on my Bose sound dock or through earbuds.  It will play when connected to the computer...but that makes it hard to take it on a walk with me   I thought it might be a synching problem so tried that--still doesn't work.  How do I fix this problem with out restoring it to the factory setting?  I do not want to lose all my music content as some of it I cannot replace easily.  Please help with suggestions and advice. Thanks.  Karen in GA

Have you recharge your iPod for at least 2 hours, preferably till the Full charge Battery symbol comes ON.?

  • How to retrieve data from a ticking sound HD?

    Hey Folks.
Here's how's it all started: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8353054#8353054 I turned on my computer 3 weeks ago and saw a folder with a ? mark.
So I took it in the Apple store and the HD got replaced, now the data on the old hard disk is with the tech guys trying to retreieve the data off of it. But when I spoke to him yesterday he told me there is a slim chance to retrieve the data <edited by host>.
So I'm asking you gurus is it likely to retreieve the data from a ticking sound HD? I really need the stuff I had on my old hard disk there are so many photos of me travelling the world and just so much memories, it would really be a disaster if I lose all of that
To make my story even worse, when I backed up all my images on my external hard drive, I was flying back from Canada to Dubai, and I had my luggage stolen with my hard disk and 2 blackberry bolds, so Im really out of luck
    PLZ HELP!

    A couple days ago I contacted DriveSavers.com and she quoted me the following;
    -SERVICE OPTIONS AND PRICING
Our pricing is based on the drive capacity, the operating system and

    recovery will fall between $2800 - $3900)
$200 attempt fee if the data is unrecoverable
    • Economy Service (5-7 business days): $500-2700 (successful recovery
    will fall between $1800 - $2700)
$200 attempt fee if the data is unrecoverable

    recovery will fall between $7900 - $8900)
$800 attempt fee if the data is unrecoverable
Please Note: DriveSavers will never exceed the amount quoted.
That's nuts. Im ganna try my luck with DRD.ae in Dubai and see how much they charge, let me give them a call now and will post a comment in a bit.

  • Seagate FreeAgent Go is making a clicking sound and the light is rapidly blinking. My Macbook is no longer recognizing it. Is there any way to fix it or recover my files? The SeaAgent is less than a month old!

Seagate FreeAgent Go is making a clicking sound and the light is rapidly blinking. My Macbook is no longer recognizing it. Is there any way to pull all the songs I have saved on it? The SeaAgent is less than a month old!
Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
Or at least recover the lost data?
    Thanks!

How to fix: the drive is in warranty, so contact Seagate for a replacement.
How to recover your data: Do you have backups? (If not, you really, really, should.)
You can try downloading Data Rescue, which will run in trial mode and let you know if the data is recoverable. (You can then choose to purchase the full version if it works for you.) A clicking drive, though, is usually (though not always) a sign that the drive cannot be recovered.
