WD Passport

I'm considering a Western Digital Passport Essential 320GB external hard drive to use with my iBook G4. Experience with a different USB-powered external drive leads me to assume the iBook won't provide enough power for the Passport. A "power booster cable" is available for the Passport, but I have what I think would be a better solution for my particular needs -- if it'll work.
So here's the question: If I were to plug an AC-powered four-port USB hub into the computer, and plug the Passport into the hub, would the hub provide the necessary power for the Passport?
(And yeah, it sounds like kinda a dumb question, but I want to be certain about what I'm doing before I start buying $100+ items.)

Given the limited port power in the computer, use of a powered USB hub is
recommended when adding items to use with the computer. Be sure you do
not attach a keyboard to the USB powered port. It would work, but may not
be adequate in that configuration for use with certain keys on startup. The
external powered USB port can support a mouse, in addition to printers and
other items (camera downloads, etc.) A self-powered externally enclosed
hard disk drive is sometimes a better answer; especially when it may be
expected to be able to boot a computer from an on-board clone.
(For that, I use a FireWire externally enclosed hard disk drive with AC adapter.)
After you set up a USB powered hub, you should be aware that if any odd
issues result with the peripheral components, to test them separately. And
when performing system upgrades or updates, you may be best advised
to only have the computer's keyboard, mouse, and power cord attached.
Both of my computers have powered USB hubs and other items attached.
There may be times when things stop working; or act odd. It is possible
for a powered USB hub to fail or partially fail and make trouble.
(I use a standard USB keyboard and mouse, printer, etc; with my iBook G4
on a powered USB hub; and also have a keyboard tray with the Book on top.)
Good luck & happy computing!

I recently broke my 2008 macbook. i was able to use an external hardrive to back up my data onto My Passport. I was going to buy a new computer but a friend told me sher had an older version of the iMac. (not sure how old but it doesnt have a camera if that helps) i was able to hook it up and turn it on but i ran into a few problems. 1) the "authentic" user or whatever it says is someone who previously used the computer. i added me as a user but im not sure how to make me the main user. 2) after hooking up My Passport, i was able to drag my files and copy them to the desktop.(i think i did it correctly) now, i dont know how to make my hard drive and applications and iformation the "main " info. The current apps on the iMac are super old versions of iTunes and iPhoto and such. 3) while trying to open the apps from my macbook on the iMac, it said it didnt have the right software to open these apps.
I am so computer illiterate so someone please help!!! Also, i do not have internet in my new apartment yet so if there is a way to make this happen without using the internet that would be preferred. sorry for the horrible spelling and poorly written paragraph.
    THANK YOU!!

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

  • I have an external drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. Which format do you think I should use? Will either one cause damage to the files on the hard drive?

I have an external hard drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. I also want to be able to connect it to my TV and watch movies.
I read up and I think I am supposed to use exFAT or FAT32? I also saw MS-DOS. Which format should I should use? Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
My little memory stick uses MS-DOS and it works on both mac and windows.
Please can you just tell me a little about each and suggest which one to use.
I know how to change it once you tell me so don't waste your time writing about changing it.

Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
WARNING: FORMATTING A DRIVE ERASES IT COMPLETELY !!
If you need to carry large files (e.g., larger than about 4GB) back and forth, you may need ExFAT. Otherwise MS-DOS works for smaller files.
The Mac can Read, but not write Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) without an add-on program such as Paragon NTFS.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • WD 1TB external Hard Drive passport not available...

I have a WD 1TB external hard drive and when i plug in the device into my mac book pro it appears as if it is connected but the passport does not display anywhere on my computer. When i try to eject the WD it goes away for a second and comes back up that it is still connected. I do know i have zero space on my external hard dive but i just don't understand how early today it was working and now it can't be found.
Since i have used my external hard dive as my main source for time machine...will i still be able to retrieve my documents, pictures and videos if my hard drive is corrupt? has anyone had this problem before? If so, any suggestions? Thank you!

Unfortuanately WD external HD's have a pretty bad reputation with Macs. It has something to do with their enclosures as their internal HD's seem to work just fine. I would recommend exchanging that drive for one with a higher quality enclose. Just about any other manufacturer would be fine however the 3 best IMHO are:
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    Lacie Quadra d2 series
    G-Tech G-Drive series
All have similar features and build quality. I would be comfortable using any of the three but I've been successfully been using the Lacie's for 3+ years.

  • Trying to create a contact sheet for passport photos....HELP!

Aperture 3 and iMac are both new to me and after a lot of research, I finally figured out how to make a contact sheet for my passport photo so that I don't have to pay 10.00 for a measly 2x2 photo at Walgreen's. I went to file>print>selected the 8x10 borderless size and adjusted the picture so that I would be able to print 20 2x2 photos on one sheet. PERFECT....but....I don't really want to print it myself ( I don't have any photo paper right now )...I want to SAVE the image I created and upload it to Walgreen's so that they can print it. Then, I will cut out the 2x2 photo that I need. The only problem right now is that I cannot figure out how to SAVE the image to my computer, either in iPhoto or Aperture 3. If anyone knows, can you please help me out with this. OR if there is another way to create the image in another area of Aperture 3 I would like to know how!
Thanks for any help you can provide

Once in print after you have the layout you want select the Print button. This will bring up the  system print window (not actually print the image yet).
At the bottom of the new window is a button PDF select that. From that pulldown you can elect to save the print image as a pdf or better yet for your need you can save  as a JPG (or TIFF)
Once you have it saved as a JPG you can upload to Walgreen;s

  • JCOP41 ICAO-compliant passport

    Hi,
I'm trying for a while to create an ICAO-compliant e-passport using a JCOP41. Now, I'm having some trouble creating a DG14 with characteristic-two fields GF(2n) since GF(p) is not supported by the card. According to RFC3279, here is what I need to create (since I'm sure there is no problem with GF(p), I will only consider the critical part):
    FieldID ::= SEQUENCE {
        fieldType OBJECT IDENTIFIER,
parameters ANY DEFINED BY fieldType }and
    Characteristic-two ::= SEQUENCE {
        m INTEGER,          -- Field size 2^m
        basis OBJECT IDENTIFIER,
parameters ANY DEFINED BY basis }Using the document of the BSI "Technical Guideline TR-03110" Appendix D, here is what I propose for keys of length 113:
    3028
        06072A8648CE3D0102
        3011
            020171                              // m = 113
            06092A8648CE3D01020102                    // tpBasis
020109                              // e = 9The problem is that I cannot perform EAC using the Golden Reader Tool (GRT). I always get the following message: "The chip authentication procedure failed. The chip may have been cloned. BER decode error".
Is there a document where I can find an example similar to the one in the document of the BSI for GF(2n)? Can someone point me where I'm wrong? (the RFC seems a little bit blur to me)
    Thanks

Oops, I put the wrong example. Here is what I have, but still no luck:
    301C
        06072A8648CE3D0102
        3011
            020171

  • How do I install itunes.exe on blackberry passport? I've downloaded file but it will not open.

I'm trying to download an app that's only available on iTunes. I've downloaded iTunes.exe but it will not open on Blackberry passport. Is there a specific .exe version that I need to download?

You can't.  iTunes itself runs on Windows PCs or Macs.  Any apps available from the iTunes Store will only run on iPhones or iPads.

  • I can not get Time Machine to back up an external WD Passport 2 TB drive!  Has anyone else had this problem?  The drive is new and I was running Snow Leopard and upgraded to Lion and it still won't do it.  Time Machine backs up the internal drive fine.

I bought 2 2TB WD Passport Drives with the intention of housing my iTunes/iPhoto libraries off my older MacBook.  I have successfully transferred the Libraries to one and am using the other one for Time Machine.  In Snow Leopard I could back up my computer to Time Machine no problem but when I did not exclude the iTunes/iPhoto drive the back up fails.  Both drives have been reformatted, permissions repaired and checked in Disk Utility and one was replaced.  I have been to the Genius Bar now 5 times.  I have tried using USB drive and FireWire.  Both drives are recognized and are working properly otherwise regardless how they are connected.  Finally yesterday the Apple store installed Lion to see if that fixed the issue and it did not.  Time Machine successfully backed up a USB Flash drive, and today I will try an older external drive.  Any ideas on what else to try??? Do I have to resort to third party software like Carbon Copy Cloned to get this done?  Any ideas why this wont work?  I am using a FireWire converter but as I said, both drives are working normally otherwise (libraries working, time machine working for the computer's hard drive.  Any ideas would be appreciated!!?

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

  • Can I upload a Time Machine backup (Passport) made on my computer to my husband's computer?

I'm afraid that my present Macbook is starting to have problems.  I have an old Time Machine backup that I made on a Passport USB drive last year (using OS 10.6) so I can transfer the contents of my computer to my husband's Macbook (also OS 10.6).  But when I connected the Passport, I got a message saying, "This backup was created on a different computer.  If you reuse this backup it can no longer be used by the original computer."
I'm not sure what the implications of this are.  I'm pretty sure I created the backup on my computer, but it might have been made on my husband's computer.  In any case, I'd like to make a new one on my computer and upload it to my husband's as planned.  Question:
    1.  Is there a way I can check to see which computer the backup was made on?
    2.  If it's an old backup of what's on my computer, is there a way I can update it, rather than go through the long process of creating a new backup?  (The USB drive is 1 TB, so an original backup takes forever!)
    3.  If it's a backup of what's on my husband's computer, can I overwrite it ("Reuse Backup"?) and then upload it to his computer?
Thanks for any information out there!

    1. Hook up the drive to your husband's computer. If you don't get the same error message, then it is likely a backup of his computer. If you don't get an error message when attached to your husband's computer, enter Time Machine and check the admin user name.
    2. Depends on answer to first question. If it is your computer, start a backup.
    3. You can have 2 backups on the same drive. If it is your husband's backup, just start a new one for your computer.

  • I am trying to back up my iPhoto library to a WD Passport external hard drive and wondering how to do this

Hi. I am putting my Mac desktop into storage for almost a year and I want to back up my iPhoto library onto a WD My Passport to keep with me and also if I can on to the Airport Time Capsule.
How can I do this successfully? I have about 15,000 photos on the desktop. Or would I be best to us iCloud? Is it expensive? How do I tell how big my iPhoto library is?
How do I know my backups have worked?
Thanks for any help I might receive.

Apple have specific instructions for moving the library.. follow it and make sure the library is working by then opening it from iphoto.
