WD Raptor 8M cache or 16 MB cache?

Hello, I have a Mac G5 Dual 2.0 GHz and I want to buy one of this drive
but I'm not sure about the compatibility with my system.
If I use these drives on a firewire 800 external case I don't know
if they're going to perform as well as internal.
Thank you for your comments.

Hi-
You can see the performance of the Raptor and many other drives, as the boot drive, in these performance tests.
I agree with Kenichi, that the Raptor in an external housing would be a waste.
As a boot drive, the Raptor is fantastic, but for external use, the same money will get an enterprise class Seagate, Hitachi or Western Digital of 750GB or better, and perform on par or better than the Raptor in read/write performance. See these performance tests.
Also, the Raptor is old technology, and the newest enterprise class SATA drives, with up to 5x the capacity of the Raptor, often perform better than the Raptor as a boot drive.
Any external SATA drive will benefit from using an eSATA connection to SATA controller card. Even with firewire 800 connection, the SATA drive will perform slower than on the internal connector, especially with write performance. These performancetests illustrate the point.
If you are really serious about drive performance, the tests involving the top enterprise class drives, the 150gb Raptor, and the new (coming soon), 300GB VelociRaptor may interest you.
This is cool!

  • Another Raptor Question...

    Hello Everyone!
Sorry for being a pain and asking this quesion once again. I did a search, but wasn't satisfied with the answers I got...
    The following:
You can see my setup from my sig. What I have done so far is setup BIOS Native mode SATA & PATA enabled SATA P0/P1. Both SATA drives connected to ICH5. Installed XP pressed F6 installed the driver with the intel disk. Partitioned the Raptor 5GB & 30GB FAT32. The only bench I've done sofar is Sandra where I got 41MB/s. Which according to SiSoft Sandra is just as fast as a normal IDE HDD. 2 Raptors in RAID are quoted @ 144MB/s
My question is if this is right or if I've done something wrong?
    Thx for your help

    thx for your input guys!!!
I ran bootvis & found the reason for the delay during startup! It was the USH hub. After disconnecting all my USB devices I am now back to a 14sec. startup!!!
But What is more important to me is the poor Raptor performance!!!
I ran SiSoft Sandra again & here are my results:
    5GB (FAT32 default allocatoin) partion: 32MB/s
    30GB (FAT32 32k allocatoin) partion: 44MB/s
    Index: 2xRaid0 36,7GB Raptors 8MB Cache: 95MB/s
This seems really slow to me for a 10.000rpm HDD. Can anyone tell me why this is the case?

  • Encore CS3 - Out of Memory & C++ Runtime Error

I'm running Encore CS3 and I encounter several problems with a recent project that have made Encore practically useless.
When I try to preview the project, play a timeline or preview a menu I get this error. Out of Memory - Please Save and exit immediately to avoid data loss. I also get the c++ runtime error sometimes while trying the same actions.
I've also had Encore hang while trying to import .m2v files, although this appears to happen randomly. Clearing the media cache seams to fix it, sometimes.
All video was compressed with Cinemacraft Encoder 2.70.02.12 and all audio was normalized with Adobe Audition CS3.
I've read through the forms and tried deleting the media cache in the registry and re-installed Encore once. Nothing appears to work, I'm about ready to ditch Encore and go with another authoring program.
    Please help.
    My Specs
    Windows XP X64 (Current Updates)
    Dual Opteron 275
    Tyan Thunder K8SE
    4 GB ECC/Reg RAM (Corsair DDR400)
1x 74 GB Raptor for OS
    1x 74 GB Raptor for Cache/Temp
    2x 500 GB For project/storage
    Quadro FX 3400
    Sound Blaster Audigy
    Pioneer 112D
    Sony CRX320E

Why would XP64 be the problem if its worked fine for over 30 projects?
I also tried loading the project on one of our 32bit XP workstations with Encore CS3 and had all the same problems.
At this point the problem appears to be a bug with Encore, because after starting over from scratch I got the project to work fine.
It also appears that if you copy/paste anything it will corrupt your project somehow.
So, the bottom line its this, XP64 is not the problem.

  • Quick follow up, Promise MB'Bios 1.5 Benchmarks

    Hi,
as i pulled the promise apart in not a very nice way a while back i thought it was only right to give the new bios a run through in the same way,.
so here's the old run through think it was BIOS 1.3
and this is the new bios 1.5 (with promise update)
also as the value went over 200 the graph colouring changed, the sub 200 graph has more detail, so lowering the top values from 207 to 200 gives a good detailed graph, here.
think it looks like they've fixed some of the major problems with it and you can now see some drive cache spike comming through,.. although it's still limited by the PCIEx1 connection, this array (four 74GB raptors), can cache spike 460MB/s and sustain 277MB/s on a nForce3 SATA RAID controller Vs Promise cache spike 200MB/s and sustaining 200MB/s.
.. someone must have been listening!

also to follow up on the new cheetahs, got the last line of atto done (256MB) on the new array 2x cheetahs 15K.6 running on an adaptec 5405 RAID card in RAID-0
it's looking good for 330MB/s thats about 165MB/s a drive which is what one benchmarks at, so four should be good for about 660MB/s
i'm very happy it's pretty much exactly what i expected, avarage seek is around 5.4ms Vs 7.6ms for the four raptors and 330MB/s Vs 280MB/s (again raptors), and now gives room to grow to four cheetahs.

  • What's next?

    Good morning all,
So about a year ago I decided to start putting some pieces in place to build a great high end system which will be used for graphics and video, music production and day to day office task.  I use almost everything in the CS6 Master Suite.  I went out and started bulding from the ground up and ended up with the following system:
    os: win 7 / 64bit
    abobe: CS6 Master Suite
    case: Cooler Master Cosmos II
    psu: Antec Quattro 1200 watts
    mobo: Asus Z9PE-D8 WS
    cpu: Dual Xeon E5-2670 (8 cores/2.60Ghz)
ram: 64 total (32 per cpu)
    gpus: Quadro 4000 + Tesla C2075
primary hdd: Samsung 830 SSD - 500GB (using this to run OS (win 7) and all apps)
file storage hdd:  Two WD 3TB Sata in a mirror raid (using to save all project files) <-  this gets used a lot.
stock storage hdd: Two WD 1.5TB Sata in strip raid (using to store stock files) <-  this is only for storage and rarely used.
cache hdd: An older WD Raptor (10K) 75GB drive (pointing all my adobe caching to this drive)
I am wondering if I made the wrong decisions anywhere with these components.  I did see an instant increase from my previous i7 (gen 1) setup but I am not as impressed with my AE results.  Note that I am more a beginner with AE so I dont have much to compare to with past experiences but from my research and videos of NVidia I would think that my system could perform well.  My scrubbing is bad, my render times are very bad.  Maybe there are things I am not doing to enhance the render time.
I do plan on getting a smaller Samsung SSD to replace my Raptor for caching.  Is this where my performace is falling short?
And in regards to my subject title...if you were me and this is your setup..."What's next"?
    thanks in advance,
    Ren

An SSD hard drive will help for many parts of AE functionality, the graphics card doesn't matter at all (well, HARDLY at all, unless you're using the ray traced 3d renderer, in which case it does matter).
I have been reading that a dedicated SSD for caching..is that what you are referring to or should I have a SSD for only the program to reside on?  Also with the caching other Adobe products have location settings to...should they all reside on this "dedicated" SSD of should it be left for only AE?
What, specifically are you doing in After Effects? How is it performing? How are you expecting it to perform? Specifics would be very helpful here.
sorry.,,i am new to AE and have been using it for about 6-8 months so my terminolgy will not be of standard.  I did an 8 second animation (which is a few layers, some vectors, some emmiter and particles..trapcodes).  My preview and pre-renders are at 1/4 resolution.  My final render is a full 1920x1280 avi.  This render look about 1.5 hours.  I would have expected the render to be quicker.  Also when closing and re-opening AE i thought the saved pre-render would load up so the srubbing or playback would be almost re-time.
Also, why in Heaven's name do you have a Tesla card? Are you using software other than the Creative Suite?
yes at the moment using for Blender...but also thought the "maximus" configuration would beef up AE...or at least according to NVidia's great videos.. (http://www.nvidia.com/object/maximus-media-entertainment.html)

  • ACR Cache

    I own CS3.
My digital processing PC has 3 drives.
My C: drive has just programs and OS. It is a 36 GB WD Raptor
My D: drive is a slower WD Caviar 320GB and houses my RAWs and processed jpgs. I use other 320GB Caviar drive (my E: drive) as one of my backups (should D: fail).
The other day I noticed, to my surprise, that my C: drive had less than 1 GB of free space remaining. Hmm, that's interesting, I didn't have THAT many programed installed. I looked to see how this was possible and noticed that there is a huge amount of space (>6 GB) in the user "Documents and Settings" folder devoted to both Camera Raw and Bridge cache in various 'Application Data" folders. I prefer to have more free space on my primary C: drive. I noticed Picasa was storing a ton of files on it as well as freed a few GBs of space by only allowing Picasa to view JPEGs (and not my RAWs). So i wonder if there is some maintenance/preference changes I can do with CS3 to further create drive space. The E: drive is only used whenever I backup files.
In ACR Preferences I noticed I could change where Camera Raw's cache is stored. Should I change it to my rarely used, but slower, E: drive or just decrease the size of the cache? Can I do so for the Bridge cache as well? And if I do change the cache's location, will all of the information currently store in the cache's present location be migrated to the new location automatically?
Any advice is appreciated. I prefer to be taking photos rather than trying to figure out how my computer works.

Thanks - I'd long ago assigned the PS scratch drive to my internal E: drive. I guess my biggest question is if I reassign the drive for both my Bridge and ACR caches to this drive, will the contents of the cache migrate to the new drive seamlessly? I guess this is technically a Windoze inquiry.
I just want to avoid any problems like finding out the many GBs of cache info was not transferred to the relocated folder and no longer accessed by PS/ACR due to the fact the cache folders are in a new location.
Jao, I just assumed the 320 GB drive would be slower as it is not a Raptor 10,000 RPM drive like the boot C: drive. But maybe it IS faster if the system is forever accessing thngs of the system drive. Don't know - my passion is photos, not information processing.
Thanks for all the help thus far guys!!

  • Hitachi Array Configuration  (Cache - RAID levels ? on Oracle9i/Solaris9)

    I shall install Oracle9i Release2 on a Sun Enterprise 4500 with 12 processors using a Hitachi 9200 array with a two-controller, 512M each, and 10 73GB drives). IT recommended and decided no fail-over and/or clustering.
    1) Does anyone have any previous experience in configuring the cache arrays with specific recommendations. We plan to set the redo logs on that cache as a leading-edge mechanism from that vendor. Are there any known drawbacks.
    2) Hitachi suggests that their technology is fast enough to handle RAID 5. What RAID levels do you recommend for permanent, in particular for indexes, and also for temporary datafiles? Oracle listed recommendations have been RAID 0+1 on datafiles; and RAID 1 on redo log files, and archivelog files.
    3) Has anyone implemented successfuly RAID 5 on Hitachi before ? The database server will primarily be an MTS with some hybrid EIS features for primarily overnight processing and two consumer groups are associated.

    Great work vango44!
Here are some RAID performance statistics I gathered while testing RAID on my system.  The testing software was Winbench 99.  The hard drives tested were new Seagate ST380013AS drives, formatted NTFS.  Winbench was running on a third drive that is not included in the tests and should not affect the results.
The drives were reformatted between tests and chkdsk'ed to try and keep things "apples to apples".
No hardware or software changes other than the RAID setup/connections were made between tests.
    Higher numbers mean better performance.
I also ran the same tests on the newish WD Raptor 10K drives:
I couldn't stand all the noise   the Raptors made, so I returned them.
    On my motherboard:
    SATA 1 & 2 = Intel RAID controller
    SATA 3 & 4 = Promise RAID controller
If the test title does not include "RAID", then it was a single drive test.
Unfortunately, I don't have a spreadsheet version of the above stats.  Otherwise I'd create nice bar charts for us and it's would be easier to deduce performance.
Perhaps some kind reader will OCR the pictures, put them into Excel, and make some nice bar charts for us?
    Hope the info helps.

  • How to - move ACR cache and LR cache and catalog

    Hi all,
in the try of speeding things up a bit with my LR (v. 2.4 64 bit on Vista 64 SP2, E8650 proc and 8 GB RAM) I got an 2nd hand WD Raptor 150 GB 10K rpm, and I'd like to move there the ACR cache (around 60GB now) and the LR previews and catalogs (around 20 GB) . Which is the right and safer procedure to do that!? :-)
Another question: my setting about File Handling are the following:
1680 pixels as standards preview file size
    Preview quality Medium
    Never discard 1:1 preview size
and in the grid mode (library) when I page down or up ... I always have the 3 white dots (of waiting) the pictures taken 3-4 secs go from fuzzy to sharp. How can I improve that time?
Thanks to all who will answer :-)
    Have a nice day,
    gianluca

There is nothing you can do to change the time that thumbnails to refresh. The fuzziness is normal while the three dots are visible and indicates that Lr is scanning the files within the Grid for external metadata or develop changes.
To move the catalog and preview folder you simply drag (copy) it to the new drive, open the relocated folder and double click on the .lrcat (catalog) file. The double click operation will open Lightroom with the relocated catalog active.
You can drag the ACR cache file to the new drive. However, to ensure Lightroom/Camera Raw use the correct ACR cache you will need to open Preferences>File Handling and point to the location that you want the cache files to be saved.
Be aware that moving above folder is going to take a fair amount of time, albeit significantly less than rebuilding the cache and previews from scratch.

  • Lost L3 cache with QS 933 CPU in Digital Audio

    Hi All:
I recently installed a QS 933mhz processor in my G4 Digital Audio. All seems to be fine with the exception of the lost L3 cache. My question is: can I somehow achieve the L3 cache or is it an "is what it is" situation with this processor? Are there any articles on this subject?
Thanks for your thoughts and responses.

Jon has certainly hit the nail on the head. The base model Quicksilvers (733MHz and 800MHz 2002 version) didn't have any level 3 cache full stop. Consequently the 733MHz DA G4 (which was Apple's high end model of the time) was faster in real world performance terms compared to the 733MHz QS G4 (which, although newer, was Apple's low end model of the time). The benchmarks for the OWC processor upgrades show this as they have results for both models.
Apple often vary the level 3 cache amount between different models in the same range. For example, some MDD and FW800 models have 1MB, the high end MDD and FW800 models the full 2MB (the most supported by the 7455).
As I understand it the newer style G4 processors which support level 3 cache are actually slower in real world performance terms for a given clock speed. What makes them faster overall is the level 3 cache and the fact they clock to higher frequencies. Consequently the 733MHz QS processor, which doesn't have any level 3 cache at all and isn't clocked that highly (unless overclocked), is probably a bit of a dog.

  • Installing Maxtor SATA 16MB cache

    Hey all..
    I have the following problem..
I have a RAID array of two 36gig Raptors which is working fine .. thanks to vango44
I also have 2 PATA disks of 40gig running smooth as well..
    I just bought a new Maxtor Diamondmax 10 250gig 16MB cache..
I hooked it up.. SATA cable and powerconnector.. I plugged the SATA cable in SATA slot number 3 .. 1 and 2 are in use .. raptors..
But it doesnt show up in Windows..  :(
My BIOS settings are exactly as they are described in vango44 his tutorial..
Any1 got a solution for me?

Ghehehe.. thanks for help but that wasnt it.. I forgot to update BIOS :P  .. Now it can detect disks larger than 135 gig.. ANd i didnt install Promise drivers.. all fixed now ..

  • Can't enable HDD write caching

I recently upgraded my PC.  I am using Vista x64 on a MSI P35 mobo and a Seagate SATA II 250GB drive and a 36GB Raptor (SATA I).  It has the newest 1.8 BIOS and newest Intel AHCI drivers.
The problem is this: I can't enable write caching on either hard drive in the Device Manager.  It is there to check but below it it says something like "This device does not support write caching."
Now I am not dumb, and the Raptor used to have write caching enabled on my old nForce4 mobo in Vista.  I have AHCI enabled in the mobo BIOS too.  Does anybody kno what is causing this?
Also, does anybody knw of any good utilities that will tell me the fatures that are enabled (NCQ, SATA 3.0, etc..) that doesn't require an install?  I just like to execute utilities and get results without installing stuff (like CPU-Z and GPU-Z).

    Hi,
By default, write caching is disabled on a disk that contains the Active Directory database (Ntds.dit). Also, write caching is disabled on a disk that contains the Active Directory log files. By doing this, you enhance the reliability of the Active
    Directory files.
Thus if it is a DC, try to move the Active Directory database and the Active Directory log files off of a disk in which you need to enable write caching.

  • Error Message: Need to purge Cache in Adobe Bridge CC (on PC)

I tried purging using Adobe Bridge by going to Edit/Preferences/Cache then purging, but it becomes non responsive.  The error message said the problem files were at Users/(my user name)/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/BridgeCC/Cache.   There are 4 files in there that are taking up 124 GB!  Can I simply delete these files or will it corrupt my regular files?  I tried doing as some other forums suggested and hold the ALT key down when opening Bridge before purging, but no luck.

Yes, you can delete the cache files manually,  Just be advised that Bridge will become very, very slow until it finishes rebuilding its caches.  Depending on your files, that can take a few minutes or several hours.
A good way of doing it is at night, so you can do it before going to bed and let Bridge rebuild caches overnight.
If you can, save the cache files before deleting them to an external drive, so that you'll have them as backup if something goes wrong.

  • How do I stop Firefox from auto-loading websites on startup? Why doesn't it use the cache?

When I open up Firefox, I see a row of "loading circles" swishing around. I don't want my browser to do this, because it slows down my internet connection, it's unnecessary 95% of the time (I often keep tabs open just to have quick access to some text), and sometime it's actually detrimental (for example, when the page has changed since the last time I loaded it, but I actually wanted the information from the former state of the page).
How do I fix it so that Firefox uses the cached page instead of trying to load a new one?
To clarify: I want Firefox to load the new page when I visit a bookmark, or click on a link to a page I've seen before, or press the reload button. I just don't want it to do this when all I've done is start up Firefox.
Let the tabs sit there until I tell them to do something! Can anyone help?
    Using:
    Firefox 9.0.1
    Windows XP SP3

Yes, but at least the start will be faster and only one tab ta the time is checked on the server.

Have a  problem with Lightroom 5.4.  Since the program crashed yesterday it won't launch, it comes up with the message "Lightroom encountered an error when reading its preview cache and needs to quit".  "  Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem next time it launches".  Except that it doesn't, I keep getting the same message and the program closes.  Does anyone know what I  can do to repair it?  Can't back up, can't do anything.

There are dozens of threads in this forum that describe the fix
