WD Raptor & UDMA6

Hi people
I know this question has been asked
a lot,but i just put my system together
& i want to make sure that everything
runs as it should .
I mailed Western Digital ,and this is
what I got :
" Response (Reigneer) 09/05/2003 03:53 PM
The 36GB Raptor drives should run at UDMA 6 with a maximum transfer rate of ATA 150. To set the UDMA mode for the 36GB drive, you need to use the Device Manager in Windows. Some BIOS may have support for setting the UDMA mode for Serial ATA drives. You need to contact the motherboard manufacturer and ask if the BIOS in their motherboard supports the function. "
Does anyone with a raptor have experience
with this ?
thx in advance

According to several tests on the net, the Raptor's read speed min/max is about 35/57 Mb/s. If you use Sandra to test your drive, your result will be much lower than this, -don't ask me why. I've used Aida32 to test my drives, and the speed on my Raptor is 32/57 with UDMA5.
Why bother with UDMA6 when max read never exceeds 60 Mb/s? The 150 Mb/s on UDMA6 is max transfer rate, not the transfer rate you will get using it.

• How do I use WD Raptor for OS/Apps drive and RAID 0 for Home/Data drive

So far I have configured my machine with a WD Raptor 74GB as the startup disk, and created a RAID 0 with the Seagate 250 GB drive (shipped with the machine) and a 250GB partion of a WDC 320GB drive. All drives were zeroed and I used the install disks to load Tiger on the Raptor. I backed up to a LaCie D2 1TB external hard drive with LaCie's Silverkeeeper.
I would like to use the WD Raptor as startup/apps/scratch disk and the RAID 0 for the user folders and other data. I would then like to create a RAID 1 with the RAID 0 and a 500GB partion of the LaCie 1TB external.
I have learned however that what I would like and what I can have are not always compatible.
My questions:
Is the Silverkeeper backup sufficent, or should I have cloned my previous system?
What folders should accompany the application folder on the Raptor? So far I have only put the app folder there and nothing works. I suspect things like 'application support' should be there as well.
Is there a way to keep my home folder on the RAID 0 without using Terminal or spending too much time as the root user? I tried copying my home folder onto to the RAID 0 and putting an alias in the user account I had to create while installing the OS on the Raptor. This kind of works but is not a particularly elegant solution.
I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed or if the proposed configuration is even achievable.

Photoshop files of 1GB+ can eat up memory and scratch. And the more drives for scratch, the better.
Some of the limitations are with the bus, bandwidth, and 'swapping' code in and out of different cores that is inefficient.
Compilers can do some, but from the time new hardware (8 cores) to seeing improvements to compiler, and out to software (applications) and OS, can take a year or more but provide in the neighborhood sometimes of 40%. In which time, newer designs will change the equation. Caching and VM will improve with Leopard, but beyond that...?
So... back to "read world" IF you are in the habit of working with 1-2GB images, then a pair of Raptors for boot is helpful, AND 8GB and more of RAM, AND 4-8 drives for scratch. (Think of those Sonnet Port Multiplier controllers and Fusion 500 style case for 5 drives on one port).
If you work with files smaller than 500MB range, your needs are cut way down.
150GB Raptor boot drive. Small. subtract 25% for minimum free space, 140GB formatted, kind of tight for some. But it handles 60% well.
The outer 30% of 465GB (RE2) is also fast and good performance. I partition large boot drives to keep the OS and apps contained in the outer 1/3.
Mac Pro Memory Usage and Performance
If your work flow means doing more than one thing at a time on your Mac Pro, then you will see significant gains if you spend extra to get the 8-core version. Our Photoshop CS3 actions were completed 39% faster on the 8-core when we had 3 other apps busy crunching. This advantage emerges in spite of the memory bus limitations of the 8-core Mac Pro.

There were two versions of the 74 GB Raptor - the older one with an 8MB cache, and the newer one with the 16MB cache. The 16MB cache version is basically the same as the 150GB Raptor with one less platter inside.
My understanding of the Raptor compatibility is this:
If you have a G5 Quad, all Raptors will work with no problems (I have a 150GB Raptor as my boot drive in my Quad and have had zero issues).
If you have one of the other dual-core models besides the Quad, the Raptors seem to be pretty reliable, but some users have reported problems. Adding a third-party SATA controller card solves the problems.
If you have a pre-dual core machine, the 8MB cache 74GB Raptor will work fine. The 16MB cache models need a separate controller card to avoid issues.
Do a search for "Raptor" in this forum and you'll find some quite lenghty threads on the subject. Macgurus.com forums also have some good information. In addition, I'd check XLR8YourMac's Drive Compatibility Database for info. The main thing to look for is reports on the 16MB cache version, which is what you linked to.

• Problems copying start up disk to Raptor drive? I'm in a mess here...!

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with this quickly, I've got work deadlines approaching and my system's not working properly... aaagh!!
(really wish I hadn't started on this plan now, but hey...)
I'm trying to copy my startup disk from a 128 GB IDE HD (of which approx only 50GB is used), onto a 74GB SATA Raptor drive (running off a Sonnet PCI card).
I want to move an exact copy of the used section (about 50Gb), so that I won't see any difference (except in speed!)... I've tried using Lacie Silverkeeper, and it boots ok, but doesn't seem to have saved all of the various prefs etc (eg. in Logic (6.4).
If I make a clone, (Carbon Copy Cloner?) it'll be about 120Gb, which obviously won't fit on my Raptor. So what can I do??? (Can I get the Carbon Copy Clone onto a drive smaller than the clone itself?)
Help please, this is stressing me out!!!!!!
Thanks!

Hi Vernon...
Have you noticed any performance boost by switching
to the SATA configuration.
Well I'm running 1 SATA Raptor as boot drive, the other 2 HDDs are still ATAs. I have noticed that things seem to have picked up a bit, before things were certainly sluggish by comparison (not that it was deathly slow before). But I'd be a lot happier if it was more stable!
My main issue with the MMD's is that that they seem
to be very picky about upgrades. Anything you add
can cause them to become unstable.
As I'm discovering...
Have you had similar problems in the past? And what was the solution?

• Need HELP installing XP Pro on two 74gb Raptors on Neo2 Plat!!!!!

My friend and I have tried almost everything. We tried them in SATA1/2 and SATA 3/4.
We made sure everything that should be disabled/enabled in BIOS is.
We followed the guides on this forum.
When we get to Windows Setup, we hit F6, and then when it asks us to, we install the RAID drivers and RAID controller from the floppy disk that came with the Mobo thats labeled "Nvidia Nforce3 SATA RAID Drivers". Then it looks like everthing is installing and going smooth, but then we get a blue screen of death, or the computer restarts, or we get an error. The error says something like "Unsuspected error occurred at 5116 d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\setup.c." Before we get that error, it says "WARNING! Disk boot sector to be modified, press Y to continue, press any key to cancel". When we cancel, we get the error i mentioned above, and when we press Y, it just says "windows setup is loading" for a min or 2, and then the comp restarts and were back at where we started.
Were trying to put the drives in RAID 0, so if anybody has put 2 Raptors in RAID 0 on the Neo2 Platinum PLEASE HELP US!!. At this point I don't even care about getting them in RAID anymore. I'll use them as 2 separate drives if I have to. I just wanna get the freakin computer up and running with an OS.
And BTW, incase this helps, the full specs of my computer are:
Antec trublue 480W PSU
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
Athlon 64 3500+
Thermaltake Venus 12 Heatsink/Fan
2 X 512mb pc3200 Crucial Ballistix RAM
Two 74gb Raptors
Radeon 9800 Pro
DVD Drive
DVD burner
Floppy drive
PLEASE HELP US!!!!

Okay, two things.  First, revisit that link I cited above.  One person "definitely" found a solution, and MSI is purportedly testing it out.
Second, reading your original message, you only mentioned loading the nVidia Raid drivers (via F6).  What about the nVidia mass storage driver?  According to the manual (and even other users around the forums), you need to load them both.  Are you?
Edit:  To recap:
Update BIOS to at least v.1.1;
In BIOS, enable all four SATA ports (even if you are only using two of them);
(probably optional) Disconnect all other drives;
Build your array (and clear it) of course;
After you hit F6 in Windows setup, install both nVidia drivers; and
Have Windows to a full format, not a quick format.
After all of that, you should be good to go.
Let us know how it all works out.

• Problems Closing Raptor EA4 After Report

After viewing a report, and closing the windows I cannot close raptor. This happens all the time with me.
I am running the EA4 of Raptor on Windows. I connect to my XE beta 3 database.
Steps to reproduce:
I click on reports, Data dictionary reports, Tables, Constraints, Foreign Key constraints
I pick the HR user to run against.
Keep default filter on popup for binds (null should be checked)
Click run report in SQL worksheet
Right click and format SQL
Close all open windows by clicking on the x on the tab
Try to close raptor and nothing happens. You have to use the task manager to kill it. The file-exit does not work; neither does ALT-F4.
I don't know if the formatting is a red herring or not. It seems to be whenever you close the tab containing the report SQL that causes the crash. Working within Raptor seems to be unaffected.

yup - known issue - need to close with Task Manager. We will be releasing EA4.1 to fix this.

• Help needed w/ JDeveloper and Raptor not working for me in 10.4

Well, I've been successfully running the previous version of JDeveloper, 10.1.2.0.0 (Build 1811) for a few months on my OS X, Tiger (10.4) laptop. I recently tried to get Project Raptor running. I'm using Apple's version of Java from Software Update, J2SE 5.0 Release 3 which is the most up-to-date version I can find anywhere.
My problem is this. I can do most anything fine, but as soon as I try to Debug an PL/SQL function in either Raptor, or the JDeveloper 10.1.3 build I get an error "Unsupported feature Vendor Code 17023" when I click OK in the Debug PL/SQL dialog box.
Thing is that this works just fine in JDeveloper 10.1.2.0.0 (Build 1811). The thing that is interesting is the 10.1.2 JDeveloper uses the Java 1.4.2 where Raptor and JDeveoper 10.1.3 use the Java 1.5, I'm guessing it's a problem in Apple's Java 1.5 but can anyone else verify this or offer help to how I can make it work?
tks

I fail to get the error message you describe. What I get is:

• How to install Mac OS 10.4.8 on 4 new WD Raptors?

Hello,
just got my Mac Pro delivered with 1 x 250 GB drive. Now I want to replace this drive with 4 WD 74GB Raptor's in a RAID 0 configuration. How can I do this? For the moment I have only the Install CD's and the 4 Raptor's. They are not yet formatted nor erased.
thnx,
Xavier
Mac Pro 2,66 4GB 4xWD Raptor 74GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   ATI1900 Dual Viewsonic 2030

You will need to get an external Firewire enclosure for the 250 GB hard drive. Install the 250 GB drive in the FW enclosure. Install your four Raptor drives in the computer, boot the computer from the external FW drive, prep all four drives, then create your RAID. Clone the external drive to the internal RAID.
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu to one (1). Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume mounts on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed on all four drives select one of them from the DU left side list then click on the RAID tab in the DU main window. Select the type of RAID from the drop down menu (striped for RAID 0). Drag each volume to the RAID list. Click on Create button. Wait for the RAID to appear on the Desktop.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

• What should the read in/outs normally be for a Raptor?

Hi, I installed a 80g Raptor a couple days ago as my start-up disk and had to clone my old HD to the new. After keeping an eye on Act. Monitor it looks like the Raptors data in/outs is not consistently fast (it will hit 40mb/s but usually stays in relatively low numbers). Is this cause for concern or just how it operates during normal use? Is there a good way to test that the HD is running properly? Is cloning HD's a risky business? I used SuperDuper to clone from my old HD. I know its a few questions but I am considering a re-install of Tiger if the numbers aren't where they should be.
Thanks.

I would say you want to stay below 50% full. If it was a clone - and if you formatted with the Intel, not PPC APD partition option, it should be quick.
And does it in fact have 16MB Cache?
Even using 15K SCSI drives, they would often not be pushed enough to see higher numbers. QuickBench and ZoneBench are an excellent way to test, and to insure a drive is working properly, as well as there are media and integrity tests to check I/O and for bad blocks.

hi,
I've received a new raptor 10k 150go... The guy from the apple store came to get it functional in the MP... So he does what he has to do and then we go to reboot and... nothing... :s
Just a really weird sound from the optical drive "trrr tec... trrr tec... trrr tec...". Black screen... So the dude tries many diferent things before saying, "we'll have to put a new OS in that..." He launches the instal and goes away... After disk one installation, reboot and... nothing... same symptoms...
Forced reboot and finished installation. Still no reboot... The system turns off and on fine but seems unable to REboot...
No other problems noted but, hey ! That's a 4k€ computer ! Common !
The reason I'm posting this here is that the boss from the store came today and said "that must be some problem with the SATA & the raptor... seems that it doesn't give the correct answer when asked to reboot... Let's hope this will be fixed in 10.4.9.".
I'm not sure about that... What would you say ?
He told me to instal MAC OS to the stock drive (WD 7200 caviar 250) and see if that changes anything (after extracting the raptor from the system...).
thx for your replies

• HEY MSI. READ THIS (regarding ICH5R and compatibility with WD Raptors)

The following issue has not been resolved.  Seems like several people have given up and are just using the onboard Promise controller.
Thread on issues regarding WD Raptors configured in RAID via ICH5R
Does it not suprise you that nobody is using Raptors on the ICH5R?? hmmm?? (Maybe because they can't.)
I have requested RMA service with Western Digital to try different hard drives. Now I am on my 2nd RMA.  If it does not work (even with both drives using the B5P bridgechip) then IT IS CLEAR THAT YOUR MOTHERBOARD WAS MANUFACTURED WITH A DEFECT.  And thus people using this board who want to use RAID with 2 Raptor drives on the ICH5R should be entitled to a replacement board or even their money back.  I AM NOT JOKING.  I think it's something quite serious because the need and demand from users are being neglected and it seems as though MSI won't bother trying to resolve this issue and hopes to silence this issue by ignoring it.
Mods... please do not delete or lock this thread.  And people who are still in the same boat as I am and are just about to give up or have done so already... please let your voices be heard here!
When I get my 2nd replacement Raptor (hopefully it's a B5P) I will do further testing and let everyone know if it solves the issue.

Interestingly, I bought my raptors before I came across this thread, and found that I had problem of having my raptors being detected by the ICH5R.  At that time, I also have a HighPoint 1520 Raid PCI card on my mobo.
Guess what, after I removed the HighPoint 1520 Raid PCI card, I am able to have my raptors plug to the ICH5R connectors and being detected.  I'm running it at Raid 0 now, as my boot drive.
The two raptors' DCM is HBCAJAB, not sure if this information is useful.  Both drives were made in Malaysia.

A few weeks ago I had asked what would make my machine at work - 2.3 Dualcore w/2GB of RAM - slower than my home machine; 2.0 DP w/2.5GB of RAM.
The new Dualcore was unreasonably slow and I followed the few suggestions to wipe the drive, which brought it up to snuff... but I still find it slower than my 2.0 at home. At simple tasks (contextual menu pop-ups, software loading, etc...) as well as more complex Photoshop and 3D tasks.
It's not the very last generation 2.0, but the one prior, e.g. 8GB of RAM capable, PCI-Express, and liquid cooling, etc...
I doubt the .5 of RAM can make that much difference, is the WD Raptor the difference and am I just spoiled by it?
Thanks for any suggestions.

So you have a Raptor as boot in your home based Dual Processor and it seems faster than the faster Dual Core you have at work.
That's understandable, especially since the Dual Core most likely has a 7,200 RPM 250 GB slow drive (and more filled being at work, using more fonts?), plus the Dual Core shares a fronside bus, unlike the Dual Processor which has one for each. Photoshop pre-CS2 swaps memory to disk, so a faster boot drive will help. (Tiger overrides CS2's RAM limit, so more RAM will give better performance)
At home you have the Raptor as boot and most of your user files on the second drive I'm assuming, allowing you to access two drives at once using two busses.
Of course CPU intensive tasks the Dual Core 2.3 should beat the Dual 2, but since Mac OS X is heavy boot drive speed dependant (caches, swaps etc) the "User Interface feel" should be more responsive on your Dual 2, giving you the impression it's faster.
Big fat filled slow boot drives really cripple Mac OS X performance (NAND RAM coming?)

• Raptor Wish List

Since this is a pre-release version, I figured it was appropriate to note what I consider to be some shortcomings.
#1: Remember where I last saved a file, and use it by default next time I save. I HATE having to browse all over the place when all I want to do is make sure I've got a current copy of work-in-progress saved off.
#2: Anonymous PL/SQL blocks aren't allowed to be executed in the default window. That seems odd, and I'm sure there's a good explanation for the behavior, but it isn't intuitive.
#3: Decrease the memory footprint. Yikes! I generally have my e-mail program, an IM program, a source code control program, JDev, an Oracle instance running locally, and maybe one or two other things. I would really prefer to not have what I consider a 'simple' SQL development app eat so much RAM.
#4: Performance seems quite sluggish, especially when expanding out items in the database tree. This is no doubt related to item #3.
Based on use in a real-life project for about 45 minutes, I'll be switching back to my old program...not because I love the old one so much, but because the problems listed above really eat away at my productivity, and not in a "but I've never done it that way before" way. I look forward to later versions and will try them out.

#2: When I re-opened Raptor, my SQL code was automatically opened, unfortunately after I spent a half-hour searching my drive for it (and found it, luckily). Anyway, when I re-opened Raptor, my code is displayed in an editor on the right side of the screen with the file name in the tab. Below the tab is a green run arrow, a red bug, a compile and a compile with debug button. When I click on the green run arrow, the 'Running-Log' output is:
The target myTest.sql cannot be started because it is not a runnable target.
It does not appear that Raptor has connected to an instance, but has only re-opened the last file. After I initiate a connection, a new window with the name of my database in the tab title appears. I can copy/paste the code into that window, and it runs it. The problem is no doubt one of making it clear to stupid users (like me) that I don't have a database connection selected. If I didn't know how JDev worked, I would have had a lot of trouble with this one.
#3: Raptor is currently using 69,928K of RAM and 78,620K of VM. I compare this with SQL Navigator, which is using 2,056K of RAM and 27,932 of VM. This is on Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed.
#4: I am connecting to a database that is on my local network with a 100MB connection. Most things in the Connections window expand at what I would consider to be reasonable speeds. However, when I expand packages and then expand the package body (a package I wrote, not a particuarly big one) the message 'loading...' is displayed and so far (5 minutes now) hasn't displayed anything.
The biggest single problem I ran into was that my code wasn't saved, the file was overwritten with nothing in it. In fact, to do this test for you, I've got my code open in a different editor just to make sure I don't lose my work (again).
Glad that I can be of some help.

• Wishlist for Raptor

I guess it's a bit late for christmas, but here's my wishlist for Raptor.
1. Statement execution statistics (autotrace).
2. Ability to browse different between different schemas without having to create a new
connection for each one.
3. Tabs are great. But opening a new tab for each stored proc clicked is pretty
annoying. Especially when you are searching through some stored procs to find
the SQL statement that your STATPACKS turned up. A CTRL toggle to open a new tab or use back existing tab will be great
4. Execution Plan is great. TKPROF would be even better.
Anyways, great first attempt. For a free product it's already way beyond what i
would expect.

Tuning will be greatly increased for 1.1.
One thing to find your code is look at the search source report. Then you could get the exact object your looking for.

• I just bought a 300gb 10k Raptor, (2) 1TB Black Cavier, GTX 285 & Snow Leo

What is the best sequence and path to getting everything up and running perfectly? Should I clone the drive then do an snow leopard upgrade to the new hd. Or should I do a fresh install of Leopard on the new hd (Raptor) then do the snow upgrade? I have also heard that I need to leave the old video card in until I have the hd's all switched over to how I need them, then do the driver upgdae for the new GTX 285, then turn the mac off and remove the old vid card and install the new one. Is all this correct? I just need a sequence of events that needs to happen. I do not have anything on this hd that I need to keep, so a fresh install would not hurt anything. Thanks guys. also, should I setup one of my black caviers for a scratch drive? And if so, do I need to do something different to do that?

Break the questions into a check list helps.
I like to 'diagram' drive layout and what goes where.
Give yourself time to format and test each.

Format the drives with Snow and if you want, clone your old system over. It shouldn't matter other than email, prefs, web bookmarks and such either way.

SL has the GTX drivers (who/where you heard, is off)
I just need a sequence of events that needs to happen.
See #1
Thanks guys.
also, should I setup one of my black caviers for a scratch drive?
And if so, do I need to do something different to do that?
Assuming you don't need 900GB of scratch, then yes, partition and use the outer 1/3.
Better yet, format each drive as 1/3 and 2/3 and then drag the 1/3 partition sections into the RAID create tab and window and make sure to set as RAID0 stripe (mirror is the default) so you have a fast scratch volume.
You said you wanted fast. I'd have gone 3 x 1TB WD Black even.
Drive bay #4 now is your current system.
Pull it out? use it external backup.
Put 2TB backup there.
Use the 650GB x 2 partitions left from setting up scratch for media library.
