WD Scorpio Black 320GB causing full lock-up

I bought a 320 GB WD Scorpio Black 7200 RPM to replace the 250 GB 5400 RPM drive that comes with the MacBook Pro. I installed the drive internally and attempted to install Snow Leopard 3 times each time having it freeze and never return for about an hour of waiting before a hard reset. I then put the original HD back in and successfully was able to install the OS on the new driving using a USB enclosure. However, putting it back into the machine (internally) causes the OS to lock up within about 10 minutes of using the machine on each boot.
The drive checks out when testing for errors and works flawlessly for hours at a time when connected via USB. I am at a lose for how to solve this problem.
Ideas anyone?

Many WD drives have a "low power spin up" mode, for use in external bus powered enclosures, KhaoticRob. This, when it occurs on the drive, is set using a jumper between two of the four pins that sit next to the SATA interface on the drive. the "low power spin up" mode works fine in internal enclosures, but can cause real problems if the drive is installed internally. Any chance that this may the case for you?
There have also been some issues with WD drive firmware reported on their own forums, ultimately resolved by WD replacing the drive.
Does the drive check out as clean if you use Disk Utility to "repair disk"? Anything "migrated" to it from an earlier Mac?
Cheers

  • Problem Installing Snow Leopard 10.6.3 onto a new WD Scorpio Black 320 HD

HELP! I just upgraded my hard drive from the stock Hitachi to a WD Scorpio Black.
I have the Macbook Pro (mid 2009) 5'4 model, 2.54 Ghz.
Everything went well, I formatted the drive by partitioning it to one partition. I tried to install SL from a brand new DVD I got at the apple store. The installation failed, so then I created a bootable USB copy of the SL DVD just in case the dvd drive is causing the issue.
Now It's been over an hour and a half and the progress bar says "about 25 minutes" left. The log has not reported any errors, I wonder, what am I doing wrong??> Thanks guys
BTW my macbook is no longer under warranty, apple store tried to install SL on the first drive I tried which was a Momentus LP and so that's why I got the WD Scorpio Black 320GB. Thanks again!

Buy Disk Warrior. Pick up a kit to swap and replace the hard drive (new drive plus empty external case) and be sure to clone and run Disk Warrior on weekly schedule.
http://www.macsales.com/firewire - look for MacBook Pro kits
There were some 500GB drives that all had firmware issues
I'd check the MacBook Pro forum and support

  • SMART status failing on a WD Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM

I just recently purchased a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM drive to put in my 1st Gen MacBook Pro. Ever since installing the drive, I've had random beach balls happen usually when there is a fair amount of disk I/O.
Thinking the drive was bad, I sent it back and got another one. I am still seeing the same frequent beach balls requiring a hard restart to get the system to be responsive again.
Checking the System Profiler, I see that the drive is failing SMART status. I also checked the kernel logs and am getting I/O errors on the drive at the point when the system beach balls.
I am pretty certain it isn't the drive. I'm at a loss for what to try next. Is this drive not compatible with my SATA interface. Any suggestions or comments?

I also ran this to check the current speed of the SATA interface since the drive is a SATA II drive with a 3.0gb/s burst.
    $ sudo ioreg -l | grep 'Interconnect"="SATA"'

    | | | | "Protocol Characteristics" = {"Physical Interconnect"="SATA","AHCI Port Number"=0,"Physical Interconnect Location"="Internal","Port Speed"="1.5 Gigabit$

The above shows that the interface is running at 1.5gb/s SATA I which is what I excepted on this system.

Sounds like you have things well sorted out.
Despite that fact that you have had two consecutive HDDs with defects does not, necessarily, mean that all of those drive are defective. However, you are fortunate that you were able to get you money back. Seagate makes good drives, as does WD, and hopefully you have paid your dues and you will have no more incidents.
Do post back should you run into stuff and need to bounce ideas off someone else.
    Good luck.
    cornelius
I will certainly report back on my luck with Seagate.
You are correct that the failure of two consecutive drives does not mean the whole line is faulty. The drive I was replacing in the MacBook Pro was actually a Western Digital Scopio as well (just not a Blue or Black) and it has performed flawlessly. It's the drive I have reinstalled twice now while I waited for the replacement drive to be shipped.
Another interesting anecdote is that I searched the NewEgg customer comments for reports of SMART errors on the Western Digital Scorpio Black drive I had ordered and sure enough, there were quite a few postings where people had tried multiple times to get a good drive.
It's just one of those things that you start to question, especially with older hardware like I am using (1st Gen MacBook Pro) that maybe backwards compatible quirks between SATA 1 and SATA 2 are the real problem not the drive itself. I'm still not 100% convinced that the drives were the true culprit. Hard to say for sure.
Not to mention all the troubles I've been reading about with 3rd party drives and the recent 1.7 EFI update which has caused similar errors as to what I was seeing with these drives. The first drive I had didn't throw any SMART errors, or at least I didn't notice them.
I'm gonna order the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9320423AS 320GB 7200 RPM 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s and see what happens. I'll report back my findings in another thread so that people who search for the Seagate drive will have a more related thread to read.

  • My app caused the lock button to stop working

Hello everyone, i have developed a universal app for Windows and Windows Phone and after releasing it to the public it caused the lock button on the phone to stop functioning just like what happened with 'The Chive' app. Read here:
Power button issues caused by The Chive app
This happens right after you run the app or sometimes after a couple of times. When it happens you have to do a soft-rest to fix it and sometimes it might not get fixed and you will have to do a full hard reset. Also noticed that when this bug happens it
causes the Data Sense app to stop working making it crash after starting it and also its button in the settings menu doesn't show the second gray line. It is like that app is not being initialized.
I have tested this on my Lumia 925 and a couple of other Lumia 520s. The 925 is running the latest Windows Phone 8.1 Update DP and the lumia 520 are running official Windows Phone 8.1 (Not the update), Also all phones are on Cyan release of the firmware.
I am still testing this issue but i believe it is caused by the 'Ad mediator' control released by Microsoft because The Chive app is a universal app like mine and it is also displaying ads, however i dont know what control they are using.
Please help me with issue. Any information you might have could be very helpful. Also i am willing to share parts of the code to help solve this.
The link to my app in the US store is:
    http://www.windowsphone.com/s?appid=a0b4586e-8893-488d-9dac-77846980d1ec
    Thank you all in advance.
    ***UPDATE***
I have removed the ad mediator from my app and replaced it with the Microsoft Ad control and the Ad Duplex ad control but the same problem still happened. Also i installed the updated version on a clean Windows Phone Device (Windows Phone 8.1 Update with only
stock settings and programs) and the same bug happened. I feel that this is more of an OS bug.
It is a shame that no Microsoft Employee replied to this thread to maybe clarify what is going on and what we (the developers) can do if we face such issue.
BTW while searching the internet i found other cases for this bug, it happened with The Chive app and also an app called GOLOTTO that was pulled from the store because of this bug.
Please, any information no matter how little it is might actually help solving this weird bug.
    Thank you all.

Hi Franklin, Thank you for trying to help me, really appreciate it.
When the app was in private beta, it never caused this issue, however when i made the app public something happened and started causing this issue on all the devices i have. Please note that the final BETA package was exactly the same as the published one
    with no changes.
Now the trial you did (thank you for that) is the same i have done after removing the ad mediator control and replacing it with the MS ad control and AdDuplex control (with behind code to switch between them). When i tried that package before releasing it,
it caused the problem only after i switched off and on the phone (with the app still installed).
BTW, for some reason my app is hidden in the store from the people who never downloaded my app although i can still find it in my phone and i never clicked on the hide from store option in the dev portal.
Thank you for your interest in my problem and hope to hear from you soon.

  • I can not recommend WD Scorpio Black for laptop :(

As some maybe noticed, I am just building T60 hybrid (SSD and HDD) . I bought brand new 320GB WD Scorpio Black (7200 Rpm/16MB) and it was making my heavy dining table vibrating ! Horrible vibration and noise. I took it back to shop today and they tested it, tested another same brand new WD which was doing the same huge vibration and I resigned buying WD.  Maybe Blue is better (5400 rpm) but I did not try. I am going to use Toshiba 250GB 5400 rpm which is extremally quiet and basically totaly noisless (compared to Scorpio). That is it for me with WD...
Good news is they took Scorpio  back and gave me Win 7 for super bargain; they say Win 7 is much much better for SSD-should work much faster than XP Pro.  (Win XP has not been optimised for SSD).
So I am starting with my hybrid T60 from scratch, see what happens

Perhaps...I was very very surprised and disappointed ! I thought Scorpio Black is the best HDD in the world...that is why I bought it. No idea but I know as SSD is death quiet and so my T60 is almost death quiet too-I need HDD that is similar...

  • CAS4 OWC Memory & Scorpio Black 7200 HD, heating problems.

I just helped my buddy hook his 2.16 GHZ macbook up with 4gb of cas4 low latency OWC ram, and a 250GB performance scorpio black 7200 rpm internal drive. Under load his CPU started spiking towards 180 under normal computer fan control, and he thinks it may have had a temp shutdown the other day when he walked away. Right now with battery in, and fans adjusted at FULL SPEED by smcFanControl, his temps read as follows:
    CPU - 102
    HEATSINK A - 95
    HEATSINK B - 97
    MEMORY BANK A1 - 100
    NORTHBRIDGE 1 - 99
    NORTHBRIDGE 2 - 93
    HD SMART SENSOR - 93
all temps are in farenhiet, under no load, FULL FANS. This seams way to hot for no load, full fans to me. Now under no load, battery in, but fans under computer control the temps are as follows:
    CPU - 118
    HEATSINK A - 111
    HEATSINK B - 108
    MEMORY BANK A1 - 106
    NORTHBRIDGE 1 - 108
    NORTHBRIDGE 2 - 108
    HD SMART SENSOR - 95
finally full load using folding @ home for 5 minutes, battery in, fans forced @ full:
    CPU - 174
    HEATSINK A - 151
    HEATSINK B - 145
    MEMORY BANK A1 - 115
    NORTHBRIDGE 1 - 131
    NORTHBRIDGE 2 - 136
    HD SMART SENSOR - 95
all of these are in an air conditioned house, battery only been running for 20 minutes.
this seems insane to me.. now at first I thought it was the new 7200 rpms hard drive, but 95 does not seem to crazy for the hard drive. the ram seems extra hot.. but cas4 does not get much hotter in the windows machines I have. Help? Advice?

I gave you the typical numbers. Not sure what more you need. The operational range is the design criteria as used by the Apple engineers based on the thermal characteristics provided by Intel. I have two MBPs and a MB and can assure you that's what they are, and you don't need any fan control software unless you are obsessed over operating temperatures and don't mind doing something that ultimately could be wrong. Fan control software does nothing but increase the idle speed of the fan(s). This just shifts the thermal curve up or down. The rest of the control of the fan(s) is still under the control of the SMU.

  • WD Scorpio Black 320 GB 7200 RPM Not Working

Don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but worth a shot.
I just purchased a WD 320 GB 7200 RPM Scorpio Black. It will not work in my brand new macbook. The original apple hard drive works fine, I have a USB->SATA adapter, hooked it up, was able to clone the old hard drive onto the WD drive. It boots up perfectly fine when I boot via USB using the adapter.
When it is installed, however, the hard drive keeps spinning up and down and up and down...to the point where it takes 25 minutes just to boot. I disabled the sudden motion sensor via pmset, reformatted the drive, reinstalled Leopard, had the drive replaced via RMA, used the drive jumpers to limit spinnup voltage, all to no avail.
Still the same situation. Drive works perfectly fine via USB on this computer and others, but will not work when connected to SATA on this macbook.
My theory is that it may draw too much power, being a 7200 RPM drive and is being constantly disabled do to overcurrent then enabled again, causing the spin up/down. Maybe this is why you cannot order one of these from apple with a 7200 RPM drive? In any event, I give up. WD can't think of anything and I am stumped. If anyone has any thoughts, let me know before I return the drive, otherwise, it's going back and I am getting a 5400 RPM drive. If you are considering buying one for your macbook, beware.

    Here are some important updates:
Got a new WD Scorpio 5400 320 gB SATA II drive! YAY! Ohhh wait....this one is having the exact same issue: won't work connected internally, will work connected externally. I did some more poking around and this is what I found:
I also get I/O errors after booting from a linux live CD, so it must not be software related, it has to be a compatibility problem with the SATA controller and the WD hard drives. I have tried 3 WD hard drives, which all work on other computers and on this brand new macbook when connected externally. Only when connected internally. Original Mac Hitachi drive works fine.
I called apple support and was informed, to my dismay, that "we do not guarantee non-apple hard drives will work with your macbook. The macbook may not be compatible with this drive." YAY! So the RAM incompatibility issue is happening all over again, only with hard drives now! I have not ever known another computer in all my work as a tech support provider that is only compatible with specific makes/models of SATA II drives.
I am very disappointed, and honestly baffled. Once I make enough money to pay the restocking fee on all these WDs, I might try another brand. Someone else has to be having this issue?

  • New WD Scorpio Black 750GB hard drive not recognized

    Hey guys,
I've purchased a WD Scorpio Black 750GB hard drive for my newly acquired MacBook Pro 5.5, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. The hard drive is installed (internal) but not being recognized by disk utility. Browsing on Google, I've found this to be a common occurring problem but as there were no direct solutions, I'm posting this in case anyone has any solutions to this issue.
I've reset the PRAM/ NVRAM with no avail.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Your response is not 100% clear to me.
Have you actually installed the WD and Seagate HDDs in the MBP or just connected them while in an external enclosure?
When you put the original HHD back in the MBP, it is recognized in Disk Utility but cannot be repaired?  Is that the case.
Have you tried to put in the original Installation disk and has the original HHD been recognized and/or one of the other HDDs in an enclosure been recognized?
    Ciao.

In the guide locate the "Removal and replacement procedures" then the "Component replacement procedures"
If there is a "CPU" or "Processor" category then it will have a list of supported CPU's.
If you can only locate "System Board" then the list of boards will show the processor that comes on the boards. The latter will most likely be the case.

If you are going to upgrade your harddisk, why not upgrade to SSD harddisk. You macbook pro supports SATA II SSD drives acccording to these Specs. SATA III is backward compatible with SATA II, so you can buy SATA III drive if you can't find SATA II drives.
Upgrading to SATA II SSD drive you give you super fast performence.
These are a few Segate SSD drives from amazon, that are not that expensive, I guess.
As for Western Digital vs Segate comparison, I second clintonfrombirmingham's suggestion. Western Digital never works for me.

  • Cannot boot from 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Black

I just installed a new 750GB 7200rpm Western Digital Scorpio Black in my early 2008 15" MacBook Pro (last pre-unibody). I can boot the computer from the Scorpio Black when it's in an external enclosure, I can boot another computer, a MacBook, from the Scorpio Black via firewire while that's installed in my MacBook Pro, but what I cannot do is get the MacBook Pro to boot off the Scorpio Black as the internal drive. It will recognize it and show the main and recovery partititions, but it won't boot the OS (10.7.1.).
Here's a rundown of the installation and troubleshooting steps I've taken:
1.) Installed the drive in an external USB enclosure, formatted GUID partition table (GPT), file system HFS+ extended journaled.
1.b) Downloaded and installed Lion (10.7.1) from the App Store, used migration assistant to transfer accounts from my (now former) internal drive, and then booted from the Scorpio Black in the external enclosure to ensure everything worked fine.
2.) Installed the drive via iFixit instructions. Everything fit properly and I double checked the SATA connector was seated correctly.
3.) Booted computer for the first time with the Scorpio Black. It stuck at a spinning wheel on a grey screen.
4.) Held down option key at startup -- the computer showed the main partition and the recovery partition on the Scorpio Black as the startup drive options.
5.) Tried the recovery partition -- spinning wheel on a grey screen.
6.) Tried safe verbose boot (command - shift - v) -- it interleaves "still waiting for root device" with "SATA WARNING: Enable Drive PHY PM failed" and "SATA WARNING: auto-activate failed".
7.) Reset PRAM & NVRAM -- no joy.
8.) Connected the MacBook Pro via firewire to a Core 2 Duo white MacBook also running 10.7.1. The MacBook recognized the drive and in Disk Utility, I could see all the partitions on it.
9.) Ran repair volume (for the drive) and repair partition (for my main partition) from disk utility on the MacBook -- it said everything's fine with both.
10.) In system preferences, set the Scorpio Black as the startup drive for the MacBook.
11.) Astonishingly, the MacBook booted up just fine off the Scorpio Black in the MacBook Pro. I logged in, opened a few photos and played a video. Everything worked just peachy.
12.) Booted the MacBook Pro off my old internal hard drive, now in an external enclosure.
13.) Disk utility sees the internal Scorpio Black, and reports everything is fine with the volume and the partition.
14.) System profiler says everything is fine when I check under SATA. SMART status is verified.
Which brings me to step 15: admit defeat and ask for help. Any suggestions? The exact model number of the drive is WD7500BKPT. I purchased it from Other World Computing.
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers.

I actually first replaced the stock hard drive with a Western Digital 500 GB Scorpio Blue (i.e., a 5400 rpm drive). Here's what I can tell you about all three.
First, I didn't notice any difference in noise, vibration or power consumption between any of the drives. The computer felt stock with both of the Western Digital drives.
In terms of speed, my understanding is, all other things being equal, a larger drive is always faster than a lower capacity drive (I believe that's because more of the data is on the faster rotating outer areas). That being said, the step up to the 750GB 7200 rpm Scorpio Black was a bigger one than to the 500 GB 5400 rpm Scorpio Blue -- it gave a noticeable bump in performance. Opening my Aperture library and browsing photos went from sluggish and borderline unusuable to acceptable, or even good.
Bottom line, it's not a solid state drive, so don't expect MacBook Air levels of responsiveness, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the Scorpio Black.

  • Can i use an WD Scorpio Black 750GB in my Macbook pro late 2007 ver 3.1 ??

    Hi everybody
Just wondering of I would run into problems installing an WD Scorpio Black 750GB in my Macbook pro late 2007 ver 3.1. 2.6Ghz.
Already have 2 500GB installed in RAID but need more space and want to upgrade but someone told me that this MBP ver 3.1 only supports max 500GB drives......
    Is that true??
    Thanks
    Uffe / Lobojuan

If the hard drive is 9.5mm thick any SATA hard drive can be used.
A few may require jumpers if they are higher than 1.5Gbps in data speed.
Only 17" MacBook Pros of that generation could take 12.5mm thick drives.
The capacity is not normally the limit anymore, it is the thickness and data path speeds that make a difference. Also your machine supports external SATA drives that are 3.5" with this adapter:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/EXP34SATA2P1/
These drives are faster than any internal, ethernet, or Firewire drives you can add to your machine.

was the same: we had a lock after a few requests.
Here are the details about the lock:
    select sid, lockwait,status, sql_hash_value, prev_hash_value
    from v$session
    where username ='BC4J'
    and sid in (29,30)

    select sql_text from v$sqltext
    where hash_value = '1756791003' -- Hash value waiter

    SQL_TEXT
    INSERT INTO LINE_ITEM(STATUS,QUANTITY,BACKORDER,ITEM_ID,ORD_ID,

    select sql_text from v$sqltext
    where hash_value = '1334541938' -- Previous hash value waiter
    order by piece
    SELECT LINE_ITEM_SEQ.NEXTVAL FROM DUAL
So my question is: what is causing the lock? I'm doing an insert
    and a select?

    Philip

    Can someone respond please!
I tried to run the Online Orders sample application on iAS 1.0.2.1 and 1.0.2.2. On both iAS versions, the sample application created a DB session for each request to the page addtocart.jsp. After 2 (sometimes 3) requests, one DB session has a lockwait and the application stops responding.
This problem is easy to reproduce. Just create the BC4J schema, go to http://localhost:7778/onlineorders_html/main.jsp and try to add a few items in your shopping cart....
    Thanks!

  • Finding the Text of SQL Query causing Full Table Scans

    Hi,
does anyone have a sql script, that shows the complete sql text of queries that have caused a full table scan?
Please also let me know as to how soon this script needs to be run, in the sense does it work only while the query is running or would it work once it completes (if so is there a valid duration, such as until next restart, etc.)
    Your help is appreciated.
    Thx,
    Mayuran
