WD Scorpio Black 750 GB works in my 08 Macbook but not my 09 Macbook Pro?, WD Scorpio Black 750 GB works in my 08 Macbook but not my 09 Macbook Pro?

Anyone know why the drive mentioned works fine but a little loud in my Macbook aluminum 13" but when I put in my Macbook Pro 15" I boot to the Apple logo and the spinning wheel spins for 10-15 minutes or more before I give up.  I have re and re'd them twice with the same result.  The 250 GB Hitachi drive that was in the MBP works in either one, it has snow leopard and the 750 has Lion on it, but I don't think that should matter?
I tried resseting the Pram and couldn't think of any thing else to do.
Thanks
R.

I don't think that should matter?
It depends on where the software came from.
If you had Snow Leopard installed and upgraded to Lion, the claim Apple makes is that you will then have a "Everybody" Lion, good for any Mac that can run Lion.
If you have a Mac that shipped with Lion, you have a "Custom" Lion, good only for that model of computers.
Does that help at all?

If you are going to upgrade your harddisk, why not upgrade to SSD harddisk. You macbook pro supports SATA II SSD drives acccording to these Specs. SATA III is backward compatible with SATA II, so you can buy SATA III drive if you can't find SATA II drives.
Upgrading to SATA II SSD drive you give you super fast performence.
These are a few Segate SSD drives from amazon, that are not that expensive, I guess.
As for Western Digital vs Segate comparison, I second clintonfrombirmingham's suggestion. Western Digital never works for me.

  • Will this hard drive work on my G460 (Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 500 GB SATA II)

Looking to upgrade. This is almost the same as the current hard drive in there, but it's a faster model. Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 500 GB SATA II 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM 2.5 Inch Mobile Hard drive - WD5000BPKT I'm almost positive this will work, but I just thought I'd double check before I order it. Actually, I found a 750 GB version for the same price. Might as well go with that if this works.

  • WD Scorpio Black 320 GB 7200 RPM Not Working

Don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but worth a shot.
I just purchased a WD 320 GB 7200 RPM Scorpio Black. It will not work in my brand new macbook. The original apple hard drive works fine, I have a USB->SATA adapter, hooked it up, was able to clone the old hard drive onto the WD drive. It boots up perfectly fine when I boot via USB using the adapter.
When it is installed, however, the hard drive keeps spinning up and down and up and down...to the point where it takes 25 minutes just to boot. I disabled the sudden motion sensor via pmset, reformatted the drive, reinstalled Leopard, had the drive replaced via RMA, used the drive jumpers to limit spinnup voltage, all to no avail.
Still the same situation. Drive works perfectly fine via USB on this computer and others, but will not work when connected to SATA on this macbook.
My theory is that it may draw too much power, being a 7200 RPM drive and is being constantly disabled do to overcurrent then enabled again, causing the spin up/down. Maybe this is why you cannot order one of these from apple with a 7200 RPM drive? In any event, I give up. WD can't think of anything and I am stumped. If anyone has any thoughts, let me know before I return the drive, otherwise, it's going back and I am getting a 5400 RPM drive. If you are considering buying one for your macbook, beware.

    Here are some important updates:
Got a new WD Scorpio 5400 320 gB SATA II drive! YAY! Ohhh wait....this one is having the exact same issue: won't work connected internally, will work connected externally. I did some more poking around and this is what I found:
I also get I/O errors after booting from a linux live CD, so it must not be software related, it has to be a compatibility problem with the SATA controller and the WD hard drives. I have tried 3 WD hard drives, which all work on other computers and on this brand new macbook when connected externally. Only when connected internally. Original Mac Hitachi drive works fine.
I called apple support and was informed, to my dismay, that "we do not guarantee non-apple hard drives will work with your macbook. The macbook may not be compatible with this drive." YAY! So the RAM incompatibility issue is happening all over again, only with hard drives now! I have not ever known another computer in all my work as a tech support provider that is only compatible with specific makes/models of SATA II drives.
I am very disappointed, and honestly baffled. Once I make enough money to pay the restocking fee on all these WDs, I might try another brand. Someone else has to be having this issue?

  • IMovie 11 projects no longer working, preview window is glitched or black, event library not playing imported vids

I am having a lot of trouble with iMovie 11.  I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" for the sole purpose of editing surgical videos for work.  iMovie 11 was working great initially for me (taking full length surgical video - up to 2 hours) and editing these down to anywhere from 5 to 30 min videos highlighting crucial steps for the surgeries along with transitions, ken burns, etc  (with the plan of overlaying narrative voice-over later).  I had about 15 of these videos edited sitting in my Project Library and multiple imported videos (dvd to m4v via handbrake then imported via iMovie 11) in my Project Library.  Now none of my projects play in the preview window, it's either black or a weird glitchy picture (like messed up pic of my doc or desktop... really weird) and only about 2 of my imported videos play in the project library, otherwise they are just black when I roll over them.  My projects are still intact as far as edited clip lengths and transitions, but nothing plays, even in full screen mode.  I tried making a new project and the imported video shows in the event library but when I add it to a project it's black (but does play in full screen mode, but impossible to edit this way).  I think the audio is actually intact although i'm not positive because these videos don't have any audio (there's some baseline level that fluctuates on the audio bars).
I tried finalizing and exporting a project as an m4v (one that was a combination of two edited imported videos - one of the source imported vids working in the event library and the other not working) and the first half is all glitched up with no surgery video, but the second half is there with the transitions and everything (the half that is working in the event library).  This part does not show up when I am trying to edit the project.
fyi - I had deleted some of the videos from my event library to unclutter a little some time ago, the projects were still working after that.
I can find all of my imported videos (in .mov format) that should be working in the event library when I look in the folder:
    users/me/movies/iMovie events
If someone could please help me resolve this issue, I would really appreciate it.  I put a lot of work and time into these videos and it would be near impossible to start from scratch (which would probably be on some other movie editor like windows movie maker since my iMovie is not working properly even for new projects).  I'm hoping this is just some sort of glitch that can be fixed and my projects are still salvagable.  I can't remember if this started after I did a system software update or not.  This will be a huge dissapointment for me in the Apple platform if I have to scrap my projects because I had just switched over from the PC platform.
I even got Norton antivirus and internet security to make sure I don't have some sort of weird virus.
    I have a Feb 2011 15 in MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz, 4 g RAM, 750 g HD, 1 g vid card.  iMovie ver 9.0.4.  Lion 10.7.2

Did you by any chance upgrade your Mac OS from version 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to 10.7 (Lion) during the time you were working in iMovie on all these projects?
If not, start by deleting the iMovie Preferences file.
    Go to the Desktop
Hold down the Option key and choose the Go Menu > Library
    Go to Preferences > com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Move the .plist file to the trash and restart iMovie
See if the Project files react any differently. Failing that try doing a Repair Disk Permissions:
Restart the Mac, hold down the Option key continuously until 2 hard drive icons appear
Choose the Recovery Volume as your startup disk and let it run until you see the Desktop
Choose Disk Utility from the Recovery Menu
Run Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility
Reboot the Mac and when you see the Desktop appear launch iMovie
See if the Project files are the same or different. Next step after this is to one at a time take the Project folders out of users/me/movies/imovie projects. Move one to the desktop and start iMovie. Try skimming the projects that acted up recently. Moving one project at a time might help isolate which project may be causing problems. You can also place project folders back in their original location after doing this testing and iMovie will recognize them on the next relaunch. It won't hurt anything.

If there is a "CPU" or "Processor" category then it will have a list of supported CPU's.
If you can only locate "System Board" then the list of boards will show the processor that comes on the boards. The latter will most likely be the case.

  • Cannot boot from 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Black

I just installed a new 750GB 7200rpm Western Digital Scorpio Black in my early 2008 15" MacBook Pro (last pre-unibody). I can boot the computer from the Scorpio Black when it's in an external enclosure, I can boot another computer, a MacBook, from the Scorpio Black via firewire while that's installed in my MacBook Pro, but what I cannot do is get the MacBook Pro to boot off the Scorpio Black as the internal drive. It will recognize it and show the main and recovery partititions, but it won't boot the OS (10.7.1.).
Here's a rundown of the installation and troubleshooting steps I've taken:
1.) Installed the drive in an external USB enclosure, formatted GUID partition table (GPT), file system HFS+ extended journaled.
1.b) Downloaded and installed Lion (10.7.1) from the App Store, used migration assistant to transfer accounts from my (now former) internal drive, and then booted from the Scorpio Black in the external enclosure to ensure everything worked fine.
2.) Installed the drive via iFixit instructions. Everything fit properly and I double checked the SATA connector was seated correctly.
3.) Booted computer for the first time with the Scorpio Black. It stuck at a spinning wheel on a grey screen.
4.) Held down option key at startup -- the computer showed the main partition and the recovery partition on the Scorpio Black as the startup drive options.
5.) Tried the recovery partition -- spinning wheel on a grey screen.
6.) Tried safe verbose boot (command - shift - v) -- it interleaves "still waiting for root device" with "SATA WARNING: Enable Drive PHY PM failed" and "SATA WARNING: auto-activate failed".
7.) Reset PRAM & NVRAM -- no joy.
8.) Connected the MacBook Pro via firewire to a Core 2 Duo white MacBook also running 10.7.1. The MacBook recognized the drive and in Disk Utility, I could see all the partitions on it.
9.) Ran repair volume (for the drive) and repair partition (for my main partition) from disk utility on the MacBook -- it said everything's fine with both.
10.) In system preferences, set the Scorpio Black as the startup drive for the MacBook.
11.) Astonishingly, the MacBook booted up just fine off the Scorpio Black in the MacBook Pro. I logged in, opened a few photos and played a video. Everything worked just peachy.
12.) Booted the MacBook Pro off my old internal hard drive, now in an external enclosure.
13.) Disk utility sees the internal Scorpio Black, and reports everything is fine with the volume and the partition.
14.) System profiler says everything is fine when I check under SATA. SMART status is verified.
Which brings me to step 15: admit defeat and ask for help. Any suggestions? The exact model number of the drive is WD7500BKPT. I purchased it from Other World Computing.
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers.

I actually first replaced the stock hard drive with a Western Digital 500 GB Scorpio Blue (i.e., a 5400 rpm drive). Here's what I can tell you about all three.
First, I didn't notice any difference in noise, vibration or power consumption between any of the drives. The computer felt stock with both of the Western Digital drives.
In terms of speed, my understanding is, all other things being equal, a larger drive is always faster than a lower capacity drive (I believe that's because more of the data is on the faster rotating outer areas). That being said, the step up to the 750GB 7200 rpm Scorpio Black was a bigger one than to the 500 GB 5400 rpm Scorpio Blue -- it gave a noticeable bump in performance. Opening my Aperture library and browsing photos went from sluggish and borderline unusuable to acceptable, or even good.
Bottom line, it's not a solid state drive, so don't expect MacBook Air levels of responsiveness, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the Scorpio Black.

  • WD Scorpio Black 320GB causing full lock-up

I bought a 320 GB WD Scorpio Black 7200 RPM to replace the 250 GB 5400 RPM drive that comes with the MacBook Pro. I installed the drive internally and attempted to install Snow Leopard 3 times each time having it freeze and never return for about an hour of waiting before a hard reset. I then put the original HD back in and successfully was able to install the OS on the new driving using a USB enclosure. However, putting it back into the machine (internally) causes the OS to lock up within about 10 minutes of using the machine on each boot.
The drive checks out when testing for errors and works flawlessly for hours at a time when connected via USB. I am at a lose for how to solve this problem.
    Ideas anyone?

Many WD drives have a "low power spin up" mode, for use in external bus powered enclosures, KhaoticRob. This, when it occurs on the drive, is set using a jumper between two of the four pins that sit next to the SATA interface on the drive. the "low power spin up" mode works fine in internal enclosures, but can cause real problems if the drive is installed internally. Any chance that this may the case for you?
There have also been some issues with WD drive firmware reported on their own forums, ultimately resolved by WD replacing the drive.
Does the drive check out as clean if you use Disk Utility to "repair disk"? Anything "migrated" to it from an earlier Mac?
    Cheers
    Rod

  • HP PSC 750 - not working on Leopard 10.5.1

Following some previous advice I saw upon encountering this problem, I deleted and reinstalled the original HP drivers (from the HP website). This fixed it, for a short while. But within days or even hours, the printer stops working again completely:
    1) After this time during troubleshooting I notice under System Prefs> Print & Fax that 2 printers have become listed with the same name, PSC 750. One of them is default.
    2) Trying either printer does not work. Using generic drivers (included with Leopard) does not work.
    3) The printer is connected by USB.
    4) When sending a print job, I can click on Info and see supply levels of black and color ink etc., but the print job will just get stuck at "Connecting" or "Printing" and won't actually print.
    5) The only way I can get the printer to work again is to delete all printers, choose Applications> HP> Uninstall and then reinstall from the downloaded installer.
Suggestions? I can't figure this out.

I plugged my old PSC 750 into a new MacMini Intel running 10.5.2 today and spent hours to get all functions back to work.
I was not surprised as many problem arose when i upgraded to Tiger allready.
I got EVERYTHING (print and scan) back in operation finally, but it was a bit of a nightmare.
HP claims to have achieve (together with Apple) a print-only integration of all PSC AIO into Leopard, but looking around in google following my troubles, it appears to be a delusion for many.
    My solution so far:
You need to press the minus sign twice in the preference panel to delete all printers from the list and download and run the three installers you can find there. First install Foomatic-RIP + gplgs-8.61-ub.dmg and then only hpijs-2.7.10-UB.dmg or it won’t run.
I don’t link them directly as it would fail to follow update, and become dead links in a matter of weeks...
You may then select the proper PSC 750 Foomatic driver within the preference pane.
Works like a charm. I tried Gutenprint 5.1.7 before but no result, printing was just getting stuck on the way.
This HP FAQ section can be useful as well...
I also have troubles scanning with HP scan software from the last (probably ppc) release of HP proprietary drivers and utilities for Tiger, but it DOES scan at least once, then says it has problem to connect to the TWAIN source.
The solution i found in HP FAQ is hilarious. I bumped into this official workaround on their support site, when i had the same trouble after upgrading my PB800 to Tiger.
    HP support diagnosis:
Airport and Built-in Ethernet cannot be enabled at the same time.
If you are using Airport to connect to the internet they suggest to go to System Preference-Network and JUST GET RID of the ethernet connection in Network Status!!!
Well that WAS true in Tiger.
And if, like i do, you have a home cable network for old non-airport machines you may as well think about buying a new scanner...
Even after setting Ethernet off, at many occasions the scanner freezes on preview or scan and comes back to work after an USB unplugging and sometimes only after a restart of the PSC or even a reboot of the mac with the printer unplugged (to the worse you might need to unplug the PSC power cable) .
    Good luck!

  • I can not recommend WD Scorpio Black for laptop :(

As some maybe noticed, I am just building T60 hybrid (SSD and HDD) . I bought brand new 320GB WD Scorpio Black (7200 Rpm/16MB) and it was making my heavy dining table vibrating ! Horrible vibration and noise. I took it back to shop today and they tested it, tested another same brand new WD which was doing the same huge vibration and I resigned buying WD.  Maybe Blue is better (5400 rpm) but I did not try. I am going to use Toshiba 250GB 5400 rpm which is extremally quiet and basically totaly noisless (compared to Scorpio). That is it for me with WD...
Good news is they took Scorpio  back and gave me Win 7 for super bargain; they say Win 7 is much much better for SSD-should work much faster than XP Pro.  (Win XP has not been optimised for SSD).
So I am starting with my hybrid T60 from scratch, see what happens

Perhaps...I was very very surprised and disappointed ! I thought Scorpio Black is the best HDD in the world...that is why I bought it. No idea but I know as SSD is death quiet and so my T60 is almost death quiet too-I need HDD that is similar...

I had a 640GB HDD in my Early 2008 Macbook and it was just too much it would always freeze up the computer a bit for only a few seconds but ya. Then I realized that it was the size of the HDD that was causing it since the Early 2008 Macbook models can only handle a MAX od 500GB while the Early 2008 Macbook Pros could have a MAX of 640GB (Lucked out there!) lol But ya the Early 2008 Mocbooks can only handle a MAX HDD size of 500GB and that's it!! lol

  • Satellite C855D-135 - Corrupt BIOS, black screen, keyboard is not working

    Hello everybody.
I have been having some issues with my Toshiba Satellite C855D-135 laptop. I had to change my internal hard drive, so I decided to install windows 7 on it (I used to have windows 8 but don't have the CD and I couldn't find the licence key sticker.),
So I went into the BIOS to switch it from UEFI to CSM, but something went wrong at that point and it seems to have corrupted the bios.
I think I have bricked it, but some things still work.
    When I turn it on:
    - the screen stays black (Yes, I have tried it on a different screen)
    - the keyboard doesn't seem to be working (the leds don't turn on when I press caps lock)
    - the fan works fine
    - cd reader works fine
    - When I plug in a USB stick, it flashes quickly once, so that seems to be working
    - When I removed the memory bar, the computer did it's series of beeps
    - I tried removing the battery, unplugging it and pressing on the power button for ages. (no luck)
    - I have tried removing the CMOS battery to revert the bios to default. (no luck)
    - I tried flashing the bios on a USB stick, until I realised the keyboard wasn't working and that it was all in vain.
    - I tried putting the bios update on a CD, and it spun for a while, but nothing happened in the end. I tried putting these files on the CD:
    - IBIOS.BAT
    - C8610.FD (in the Win8 folder)
    - C610.FD (in the WIN7 folder)
    - I tried renaming C8610.FD to BIOS.FD
I have run out of ideas now.
Could anybody help me? Pretty please?
I hope it's not the motherboard that's broken, coz I really don't have enough money to send it off to be repaired.

The whole story sounds very strange to me I never heard about that fact that changing the boot mode from UEFI to CSM would affect the BIOS.
In my opinion there is some serious hardware problem. As you already assumed, it could be probably a motherboard fault.
I would recommend you to ask some technicians for some hardware diagnostic tests to perform an motherboard check in order to be 100% sure about the fault.
If you dont have enough money and the motherboard is really affected you could try to get some 2nd hand part

  • Quicktime Does Not Work...Striped yellow/black bar or Q with ?

Hi, I have read the previous posts about similar problems with quicktime but the posted fixes have not resolved my issue. I have three computers. Quicktime quit working on two of them. Before upgrading to the latest version, I got the yellow/black striped bar when quicktime tried to open. Now I get the Q with the ?. I've checked my settings and even reselected the "default" settings several times but to no avail. As to the "system preferences and deselecting quicktime with flash" input, I have been unable to locate this setting (at least as described). I have upgraded my flash as well. All three computers supposedly have the same settings.
Sometimes I receive a popup indicating additional quicktime software/plugins are required to run the media and asking if I want to get the necessary files. When I click, "yes," it takes me to the quicktime plugin page, but does not tell me what is needed.
How do I fix this problem? Here is the link to the site in question today: http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/index/1,21581,5015022,00.html
