WD SmartWare.swstor

Hi,Can the file 'WD SmartWare.swstor' be removed safely from the the Public file on MyCloud Mirror? If the file is required required can it be placed in another location on MyCloud Mirror? When others access MyCloudMirror via Cloud Access they can see the file and I'm concerned as to what secrity exists around this file. All I want is for nominated users to access photos and video clips on MyCloudMirror. Thanks .........MarlowG.

It's the storage folder for Smartware (as you may have guessed ). If you open up Smartware, on the main screen where you select the target (your MCM, Dropbox etc) just underneath the MCM's icon is a little white list-box where you can select which share is used for Smartware storage (where it puts the Smartware.stor folder). You'll probably find it currently set to Public, but you can change it to any other share you wish via the white selection box. After that you can either copy the content of the folder to the new location, or just delete it if you wish and start backing up again anew.

  • How remove WD Smartware backup folder

I bought a WD external drive a few years ago. Initially I used the WD provided SmartWare backup software, but I soon stopped using it in favour of an alternative solution.
On review of current disk usage, through use of OmniDiskSweeper application on my iMac, then I see a whoppingly large folder HD/Volumes/MyBook/wd smartware.swstor. This folder appears to contain a full system backup at the time of use of SmartWare. I can see the folder through OmniDiskSweeper but not via Mac Finder. I have disconnected all devices from the mac ... in Finder then if I click on root level then there is no /Volumes folder.
Much to my surprise I noted a folder (not Applications) on my iMac that still contained the SmartWare app. I could find no evidence that this app was still running on my iMac but I duly used the provided SmartWare app and restarted mac.
    Question ... how can I locate/delete the HD/Volumes/MyBook folder?
For context then I have sufficient backup coverage through other means.
    Thanks, Ross

    Hi Alejandro_64,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand you are trying to restore a specific application from your Time Capsule using Time Machine. The following article may be of some assistance for restoring the application as it was. The section that will be most relevant to you is Restoring data from Time Machine backups toward the bottom. One option listed in this article is restoring the entire system from a backup; I know this is a longer process but if you have the informations set the way you need it you may want to consider this process. Please remember thought that any information added after the backup you are restoring from will be removed so you may want to move those files onto the Time Capsule.

  • Trying to free up space on hard drive, with an external hard drive, but don't want to lose the files!

So I am really stressed out right now.
I have a macbook pro, with a 750 gb hard drive in it. My internal hard drive filled up  a while back so I bought a 3TB external hard drive. I backed up my files onto my external a while ago, but I don't really remember how... There is a folder on my hard drive that is called " wd smartware.swstor" , and inside that folder is about 1.7 TB of files (when I click 'get info')... So I'm guessing that is where all my stuff is being backed up. But I also moved files from my computer onto that hard drive, like pictures and videos, that I wanted to delete off my internal... So I may have duplicates?
But my 3TB hard drive is almost full, it has 400GB free on it. And my 750gb internal hard drive on my macbook pro, has filled up again so it only has 10gb free space. So basically I have almost 3TB of files on my external hard drive, and 740gb on my internal.. This can't be right. There is no way I have this many files. I am guessing I have some of the same files on my internal that I do on my external.. Most of my files are high quality HD video files that I imported through final cut pro x....
So I bought another 3TB external hard drive that I haven't used yet. Basically, I just want to move all my files that are on my internal hard drive (roughly 750gb) onto my NEW external 3TB hard drive- and then delete the files off my internal so I have more free space. I just don't know if these files are already being backed up on my OLD external 3TB hard drive.
Can someone please help? Thank you!

If I get rid of my TIme Machine, will I lose all my files from the past?
Yes it will unless you back it up first out of TM.
TimeMachine is a self rotating image of your boot drive with saved states,  it manages itself based upon the available space on the drive. As new states are created, old ones are deleted along with older versions of your files.
Also if you incur a drastic large change to your boot drive, TimeMachine will DELETE older versions of your files.
TimeMachine is not a archival solution!
To rescue yourself from TimeMachine, you will first need to save the recent copy of file(s) to the new 3TB, then restore the older version of the file from TimeMachine to the boot drive and then rename it/date it and save that older copy to the new 3TB drive.
This way you have both the new copy and the old copy of the file pernamently archived on the new 3TB drive.
Once you have exhausted all of TimeMachines older files, you can free yourself from it, erase the drive.
For your needs, I suggest this.
    Internal drive and bootable clone
1: Your internal 750GB boot drive contains active working files.
2: You have another external drive that's either 750GB or 1TB, you use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone of your boot drive, update it when you know you have a stable OS X system on your boot drive and before updates or changes, this way if the update goes bad and the machine will not boot. You can connect the clone, hold the option key down and boot the comptuer from the clone. You then can get online to get help, or simply reverse clone your software problems away.
CCC has the ability like TimeMachine to save states between clones, it's on be default but you can turn this off as to maintain a pure clone, this is what I advise you do as to avoid confusion. You clone is a perfect copy since the last update of the clone, which you can setup to do nightly if you wish or every few days or every few weeks, whatever.
Your bootable clone is your lifesaver if your boot hard drive dies or refuses to boot up, you can boot from the clone in seconds and only be slightly off since the last update of the clone. TM won't run the computer like a clone will.
I highly adise keeping your clone in a very safe place, away from theft, fire, electrical, etc.
    http://www.bombich.com/
    External Storage Drives
3: Your first external 3TB drive (sans TimeMachine) will be your storage drive, this will contain any files that you don't wish to have on the internal drive and as a result also not on the clone.
You maintain folders that are dated, with older copies of files in those folders if you wish. This way you can control the space on the drive and not make multiple duplicates of all the large files like TM does.
For instance if you work on a 100GB project for three days, instead of having three copies taking up 300GB like what TM does, you can rather choose to have just one older copy at 100GB. You can decide you don't need a particular older version of a file and remove it, thus managing your drive space yourself.
4: Your other external 3TB is a Carbon Copy Cloner backup of the first 3TB, maintain a perfect clone of that as well and update it periodically as your needs change. Since CCC can be schedualed and works in the background, you can have it update your clones overnight or another time your not using the machine. This free's up performance as TM isn't running in the background while your trying to work.
Also with no TM local cache file, that also will free up space on the boot drive.
The general rule is you need both hardware AND software protection for your data, thus with too much data to fit on the boot drive, you need a external storage drive and then a backup of that as to maintain TWO hardware copies of your data at all times.
This method is also scaleable, if you need more room than 3TB externally, you then get another 2 3TB drives, one for the new data and one for backup.
The bootable clone of your bootdrive is kept in a very safe place, it's designed to protect your OS X investment in software etc. and espectially, to get your Mac booting in as short as a time as possible while you plan on a replacement boot hard drive/repair.
Read more about the advanced options bootable clones give here.
    Most commonly used backup methods
With your large storage needs, you basically have outgrown TimeMachine by hitting the hardware limit of drives.
If there were 10-20TB drives, you likely could keep on going with TimeMachine, but you can't.
Your clearly in the more "professional" catagory with your storage management needs, not in the TM "newbie to computers" where it's managed for you.
If your finding your needs are going to exceed 6TB, you might want to consider a external hardware RAID 5 box with 5+ drives, they will self redundancy so if a drive dies you just switch it with a new one and the missing data is copied from the other drives.

  • Time Machine on a WD Smartware drive? Converting a WD Smartware back-up harddrive to Time Machines

How do I convert a WD Smartware back-up hard drive to TimeMachine software?  That is, how do I delete the WD Smartware software sothat I can then load Time Machines onto that hard drive and turn it into a timemachines drive?
I ask because the WD Smartware software is terrible and itappears to not work since I updated to Lion.  And it wasn't great softwareto begin with.  So I really want to convert this hard drive to TimeMachine.  Someone told me that it is possible, but I am not clever enoughto figure out how.  I recall something about "disc utility" butI can't figure out either 1) how to erase the WD software on the drive and 2)how to install Time Machine software or to use it with Time Machine.
    Thank you!

You don't have to install Time Machine on the drive. TM is already part of OS X. What you want to do is repartition and reformat the drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
You can now use the drive as a Time Machine backup drive by configuring Time Machine preferences. See Mac 101- Time Machine.
You will find a wealth of help with Time Machine at Pondini's Time Machine FAQ.

  • Smartware backup multiple users on same pc

I've been playing around with WD Smartware for a good few hours now but can't seem to figure out how to achieve this. I have 4 users and 3 laptops and use continuous file backups for everyone. Each user has their own share WD My Cloud and content back up from their pc user account goes to their share. User 2 and 3 use laptop 2, user 2 set up and working fine but when I try to set up back up for user 3 on same laptop to go their own share, click device to login on Smartware is far as I go. Is this a bug or am i doing something wrong?

  • HT5988 I downloaded Mavericks and now my WD Smartware that I use for Time Machine is no longer compatible with this OSX version?  How do I make that unit compatible?  olefromca

I downloaded Mavericks and now my WD Smartware that I use for Time Machine is no longer compatible with this OSX version?  How do I make that unit compatible?  olefromca

I agree entirely, been messing with this since the upgrade to Mavericks but I didn't find it quite as easy as uninstalling the WD smartware as it still operates when you plug the drive back in - I think it gets loaded onto the drive and runs from within (?). The advice from WD was that time machine was faulty and I should contact Apple...thanks guys!
Anyway, for the OP's benefit, this is what I found:
    1. My problem was that time machine couldn't see any further back than before the Mavericks install, but if I opened up and interrogated the WD drive, the old backups were still there.
    2. When TM started doing new backups, it overwrote the ones that it could see, not the oldest ones on the drive. This indicated to
me that the WD software had somehow partitioned off the old backups and excluded that part of the drive from being overwritten. Of course, as the drive was practically full, it meant that any new backups wouldn't fit in the available space.....
    3. The only way I could find to resolve this was to use the disc utility to erase and repartition the external drive. This will obviously remove all of the old files and backups, but I was more concerned about keeping a current profile as backup rather than a load of stuff from months ago.
    4. Anyway, what happens after the eraseure has completed is that you get the WD icon on the desktop, and you're invited to install the software - this means the software has now been deleted. Juts don't reinstall it, just let TM do it's backup and all is well.
Usual disclaimers and warnings about keeping another copy of your system etc. obviously apply, and I know this is a radical move to delete all your old data but it worked for me. I guess I didn't appreciate that you could use the external drive without the software that came with it and just followed the screen guide.
I'm also aware that if you don't want to use TM to do a complete restore and only want to find one old version of a document, this is difficult. However, you can then install the WD software and find the file but you'll then have to do this all again.....

  • WD Smartware, external hard drive back up not recognized by Macbook Pro

I use WD external hard drive as back up for my Macbook Pro using WD Smartware. All software is upto date but when I plug in my external hard drive it is now not recognised by my Mac. It does not appear in Finder or Disk Utility but it does show up in System Profiler. It has worked fine until now. I have changed the UCB cables multiple times, the external WD hard drive has its own power suppy and other external hard drives work in the same usb port. When I plug the external drive into a PC it is recognised but obviously will not let me use it. When I go to access via the PC it prompts me for the password to open the drive, however when I plug into my Mac, when I click on 'unlock drive' its says that the drive is not locked. The WD Smartware software runs to check the files on my Mac but after categorising them the 'back up' option is not highlighted and it will not access the external WD drive.
How can I access the WD external drive ? System Profiler data is below. Many thanks, apologies for any ignorance and thanks in anticipation of any help !

  • WD Smartware External HD recognized in Finder but not in Disk Utility

So I'm having a bit of a strange problem that is a reversal of what I see answered in the forums. I have a 2tb Western Digital Smartware external hard drive that I used to use on my old PC. I decided that I wanted to start using it with my Macbook and since there wasn't anything important on it I just reformated the drive to work with my Mac, assuming that I'd be able to use it as a normal external at that point. It worked fine initially (the day I reformatted it) but today when I plugged it in (the first time I've connected it to the Macbook after initially setting it up) it is recognized in Finder but I can't move any files to/from it. I opened Disk Utility to see if maybe I had formatted it incorrectly or something (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and it isn't even recognized in Disk Utility. So now I just have this drive I can browse through and open files on but can't add new files to or move files from it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Nevermind, I seem to have resolved the problem.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.3 & WD SmartWare

I've bought a WD Passport for Mac to bak up via Time Machine which has worked fine BUT when I click on the icon on the VCD for the SmartWare to lock the drive & register nothing happens. I've tried it with my old MacBook running Tiger & it works fine & has worked on other Macs. Is there an issue wit SL or the 10.6.3 update?

Most likely the software is not fully supported/compatible with Snow Leopard. It's still (shockingly!) a rather common problem, especially from hardware manufacturers and their bundled software. Not much you can do except contact WD's tech support and hope you get someone friendly.
If not, you can remind them that Snow Leopard's been out for 7.5 months now.

  • WD Smartware is mounting unknown disks

I have a WD Passport. It used to do this annoying thing, where in addition to the actual drive, it would load a virtual vcd drive containing the smartware software too. (This was common to a lot of WD products). To get rid of this, I installed the WD Software on my mac, and changed the settings to that it no longer displayes the VCD. This made the VCD dissappear, but now it shows a new drive called "Boot OS X" , everytime I plug my WD drive in!
I don't know what this drive is! And now I have the same equivalent problem to that stupid vcd drive popping up! When I plug my WD drive in, all I want to see is only one icon for the WD drive. Right now I have "Boot OS X" , and "Keanu's Time Machine". I only want "Keanu's Time Machine" to pop up when I plug in the drive.

    Keanu,
I have spoken to WD about their crapware-firmware in their Passport drives till I finally realized that they simply don't care that it frustrates advanced users. That particular line of drives is made for the schlub who doesn't even know how to use the OS to perform backups.
Nowadays, if you are going to go WD, take a look at the WD Elements portable line. They are simple enclosures that give you all you need, a drive and an interface in a package. Just stay away form the Passports until the bean counters at WD realize that users don't want their "extras".

  • WD SmartWare 2.4.11. Retrieve backup.

Hello, I have installed WD SmartWare 2.4.11 on my computer and using My Passport Ultra as external target backup drive. I have performed the first backup. In a natural course of operations, I have created&deleted a few files, moved files and folders elsewhere, etc. and my aim is, if a fault happens on my computer's hard disk, to be able to restore the files as they were before the fault.Unfortunately what I have noticed is that, if I select "retrieve all files" tab on smartware, all the deleted and moved files are being copied as well. If I select "retrieve some files", I can see the deleted files/folders crossed-out or greyed out. This way I could select what files to retrieve (ie all the ones *not* greyed or crossed out) in order to restore the . But this is an endless process, as I should go through all the folders. Is it any way to do that? Thanks

Hello ERmorel, thanks for your reply. I have posted an idea following your link. With the latest smartdrive release, what is the purpose of keeping all the files (deleted/moved) in the backup? When it comes to retrieve (restore) them all in the original position back on the computer where the backup was taken, this is causing so many unecessary files and folders to put back where they shouldn't. Regards John

  • WD Smartware Compatible Mac?

I am borrowing a 500GB WD Smartware external HD from my friend because I am backing up my computer.
I have opened the external HD and viewed the files on me iMac before and there was maybe about 2 GBs worth of files on it. Now Today I try and open his files again to save them, just to be safe and I can't find the external HD or USB thumb drive icon anywhere that you usually see. All I see is a CD image that says "WD Smartware" and it has generic files in it but none of the old files that I once saw.
It appears to have been deleted, I was wondering if anyone else using a WD HD can help me out please.
    Thank you.

Por el momento WD SmartWare únicamente soporta unidades de red en Windows. En una Mac puedes user Time Machine para crear copias de seguridad automáticas.

  • How do I deinstall WD SmartWare?

I read a post from MacLife that suggests one deinstall Western Digital (WD) SmartWare if you are using one of their drives, before upgrading to Mavericks. The reason stated is that some people are experiencing data loss.
I have one of their Passport portable drives (1TB) that I have partitioned into two partitions. One I use for Time Machine, and the other for another storage drive.
I've done a couple of things, but the little WD head logo/button still appears in my toolbar.
I used AppZapper to remove the WD SmartWare software from my Applications folder, restarted but the button still appeared in the toolbar. On the Western Digital support pages, it suggests opening that application and choosing the deinstall option. Well, I didn't read that before I zapped the app, so I restored it from my Time Machine backup. Now when I run the app I get the following error message:
"There is no writable WD SmartWare partition available on this WD drive. This can occour if you are attempting to write to a WD drive formatted for a different operating system, or the drive is locked. Please make sure that this WD drive is formatted for the operating system you are currently working on, and that the drive is unlocked."
Yes it is formatted for Mac OS (I used Disk Utility to format and partition the drive) and it isn't locked.
I went to the WD website and downloaded the firmware updater and utilities app. When I try to run that I get the error message: "The specified drive is in use. Close all other applications and run the updater again."
I turned Time Machine off and ejected both (all) WD partitions. Remounted the drive, tried to run the updater again and got the same response.
I have noticed that when the drive is unplugged, the toolbar button disappears, so maybe that is just coming from the drive and the software is already installed?
Why won't the updater run if the drive is mounted? Nothing on it is in use that I can tell.
    Thanks for the help,
    Randy
