WD TV vs. WD TV Live Plus

I have a WD TV Live Plus and I love it for audio files but it's not so good on images. The problem I have with it is that I have one folder in particular which has close to 10,000 images in it. If I have the image settings set to shuffle, and I play a slideshow, it shows the images in shuffle mode but it tends to select only the first few hundred images to choose from rather than the entire folder. Even if I scroll down the list of images to # 4500, for instance. and start the slide show from there, it will show that image and then go right back the the first few hundred images and show nothing but those without ever going to any images outside of that group. Two questions: Does anyone here know how to correct that problem in a WD TV Live Plus? Does anyone here have the same problem with the newer WD TV?

This is an affliction of the Plus that was never fixed. We spent a lot of time on this subject back in the day and I dug up the old thread in the archive. It affects pictures and music equally. http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Firmware/Random-doesn-t-seem-random-any-more/td-p/91982/highlight/true The good news is it was resolved on the SMP and presumably the latest WDTV player is also free of this issue.

  • WDTV Live Plus and Time Capsule

I just got a WDTV Live Plus and I love it.  The only problem is that I see the Apple Time Capsule and iMAC right away in the network shares, but I cannot get on them.  I wanted to see what the issue could be.  When I click them I am prompted for an account and PW.  I put that in and after it thinks for a little bit I am given an error message that says "there are no supported files" or something like that.  I am thinking about attaching some external size via USB but I want to make sure it can work first.

SMB is windows networking standard.. It has limitations on name length.. so keep to no more than 12characters.. that is less than max.. from memory 20.. but use short names.. ie name of the Time Capsule.. TC.
SMB does not like names with spaces.. Apple by default uses spaces.. get rid of spaces.
And SMB does not like certain non-alphanumeric characters. Apostrophe is one of them. Apple wizard sets up the TC with your name.. eg Fred's Time Capsule.. all hopelessly wrong. From an SMB viewpoint.. and since Windows still rules the world.. and everything works on SMB.. including Apple.. and including Linux which both use SAMBA.. the linux version of SMB protocol. And therefore of course the WDTV Live which is Linux firmware device.
You change the name in the airport utility from a computer.
    eg.
So change the wireless name.. TC name and hard disk name.. so everything follows the rules.

  • Hotmail live plus problem

i have configured my 3g iphone to retrieve my hotmail via pop3. it works except only the 50 oldest message (which have been read long ago) where retrieved. I archived all except the 50 most recent from the inbox into another folder. now mail on the iphone will only fetch 50 messages at a time. when a new mail arrives its there on the web in hotmail but not on the iphone. if i delete message from the iphone inbox then new messages appear in the iphone inbox after a update/fetch.
    help!

    if you stick the following in google you can search this form;

There are plenty of people with our problem and no one appears to have resolved it.
    I found a post by 'Alan Sampson' about half way in this thread;

+You can't stop this because the account is a POP account.+
+When creating a POP account with a new email client that you've been accessing with another email client - or when re-creating a POP account with an email client such as in this situation, all messages available at the incoming mail server, or that remain at the incoming mail server will be downloaded again.+
+If you aren't interested in these messages, why are they still available at the incoming mail server?+
+As with any other email client, the iPhone's Mail client includes a setting to remove/delete messages from the server when downloaded.+
Can anyone one confirm this, and why the same didnt happen with gmail?

  • Western Digital TV Live plus conected to Time Capsule

My question is one of security.
My time capsule WIFI is secured with a password, does that mean that my WD TV that is connected with a Ethernet cable to my time capsule also secure ?

There's no security over your local "wired" network, but there is a firewall between your local network and the internet that will prevent any connections to your network unless you specifically allow it.
Here I am assuming that you have your Time Capsule connected directly to a modem. If you have the Time Capsule connected to another router, then it is up to that router to provide the protection between your local network and the internet.

  • BB Curve - Windows Live Messenger Plus

Has anyone successfully installed and used Windows Live Messenger Plus on their BB Curve?  I have Windows Live Messenger installed and it works fine, but I heard from someone who has an iPhone that they installed something called Messenger Plus and it disguises the fact that you are logged on via your mobile phone.
Currently when logged in to Live Messenger via my phone it says that I am mobile and when contacts try to send me a message it alerts them that i am mobile and may be charged.  I would like it to be transparent that i am logged on via a mobile device.  Anyone have any luck with this?

I checked the website and didn't see Messenger Live Plus as being available to download for BlackBerries. Looks like it may only be available for PCs and IPhones...

  • Can Apple TV 2 stream purchased videos / home movies converted to MP4 and in my iTunes library?

Okay, so we currently own a 1st Gen ATV and love it, however 99% of it's use is streaming purchased content and/or home movies etc. that I've used visualhub/handbrake to convert and imported into my iTunes library. All in all, once I gave up and surrendered my video content to iTunes and started streaming to my 1st Gen ATV I've grown hooked, I love sorting stuff however I want (I have about 250 movies, entire seasons of X-Files etc. that I've ripped from my own (LEGAL) media and put in iTunes, so when it's sorted properly it's very clean, when it's all alpha, it's a nightmare.
I've tried a few media servers for the PS3, however they just pile all the movies into one big alpha sorted mess, music isn't sorted by genre, no genius, TV shows are not tagged by watched, won't resume properly etc. Boxee / XBMC are a little better, but then again I run those on my ATV as well, and still Boxee doesn't really seem to sort stuff quite as well or play playlists properly.
We're getting another TV for our den and have been looking into other media streaming options, what I love about the Apple TV is the way I can sort all our movies, shows etc. by genre, so the kids can just go to the stuff I've tagged as Kids Movies or I can make video playlists for them and mix up some Planet Earth and Dora the Explorer for our babysitter and movies /shows are tagged as watched/unwatched, if you stop one it will ask if you want to resume, etc.
Looking into the ATV2 it seems like it's just geared for rentals, If that's the case I really am not interested. I like the Netflix option, but then again most newer internet connected TVs do that as well as my PS3, not sure how viable an option the WD TV Live plus or Boxee box is, I'd like to get some newer hardware, but I'm just not sure what route to go.
Does the ATV2 stream media in iTunes TV Shows/Podcasts/Movies folders? It doesn't sync right? So it it all Airplay now?
Is my best bet just to get another 1st Gen? Are there any other media servers that are able to sort stuff by played/genre/etc.
Ug, I'm at a loss! I really love the features of my old Apple TV, and would love to get a new one, but I'm just not sure if it will do everything I'm used to, or if any of the other standalone boxes are better options?
I know this is a bit of a ramble, hopefully someone can make enough sense out of where I'm going and help me out! Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV 2 will play all the content in your iTunes library that your Apple TV 1 does. It can no longer sync any of it but can stream it all just as the older model did. Airplay is a different feature that lets you stream from an iPad/iPhone, the Apple TV 2 has Airplay the first didn't.
You can still sort and search content by genre, it still marks content watched and unwatched and mainly still lets you organise much as the Apple TV 1 did, with one exception. It doesn't do nested folders, so the ability to tag a movie as a show (ie James Bond) and have all the associated movies in a James bond folder has gone and it lists all these movies individually.
It has a similar situation with TV shows. It will put all TV shows in a series in a folder as the older one did, but the new one lists each series separately whereas the older model would put all the series in one folder.
Not nesting folders is a bit of a pain with large libraries and whilst I don't like it, it's more or less the only compromise I have to make and of course I get additional features too.

  • Currently, E4200 defintely inferior to D-Link DIR-655 when it comes to streaming applications

About 8 weeks ago I upgraded from a D-Link DIR-655 single band n router to the E4200, primarily to get into the 5GHz band for streaming Netflix to two different TVs in our house.
The E4200's wireless connections to my laptop's Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN  card are very fast and rock solid.  All of the E4200's wired connections are rock solid.  The router generall performs well as intended.
BUT neither my Samsung BD-C6900 Blu Ray Player nor our WDTV live plus HD box establish a useful connection to the E4200 - with two very different symptoms:
    1) For the WDTV I am using a D-Link DAP-1522 wireless AP to have network connectivity.  The DAP-1522 is less than 10 feet away from the E4200 and the wireless connection to the E4200 get's easily established.  Using an Ethernet cable at the AP and checking speeds, they are very decent, with over 25Mbit/s download.  Problem is:  When attempting to stream anything from the WDTV through the E4200 using the wireless AP, the WDTV always produces an "invalid DNS" error before any streaming even starts - even though it receives its IP address, subnet, DNS etc. w/o a glitch.  When I replace the E4200 with the old DIR-655 (and leave the DAP-1522 AP in place as is) I have no such issues.   BTW - this is independent of accessing the E4200 through the DAP-1522 on either the 2.4 or the 5 GHz spectrum.  And yes, I tried ALL settings, on all three machines (router, AP,  WDTV) including fixed IP, different DNS servers, etc.
    2) The Samsung BD-C6900 also can connect to the E4200 w/o a problem. The Blu-Ray player even shows an "excellent" five bar strength wireless network (2.4GHz band only) .  But the connection is relatively unstable.  And using the Samsung Blu Ray player's internal speed test, download speeds are only around 200kbps - too slow and unstable slow even for Pandora streaming.   Again, just replacing the E4200 with the old DIR-655 fixes the problem - even though the BluRay player then only shows a "good" signal strength, but downloads are around 20Mbit/s.  To me this hints at some inter-compatibility issues between the E4200 and the wireless card built into the BD-C6900.
I've worked this problem for countless hours now.   Only solution that worked: We are now running both wireless routers,  using the DIR-655 dedicated to streaming to those two devices.
All this leads me to believe that the current version/firmware of the E4200 (newest firmware) is suffering from some inter-operability and streaming issues - at least on the wireless side of the router.  Anyone else with similar devices and problems?  If anyone from Cisco reads this – maybe go, recreate the setup and try for yourself. As for Cisco’s reputation – come the next generation of routers in 2 years, I will go back to D-Link.

Thank you for your suggestion.  I wish it was that easy.
We have both Comcast Cable and Clear WiMax 4G - I've been trying it with either IPS connection and several DNS servers.
    DNS servers used:
The DNS servers I tried include
68.87.68.166, 68.87.74.166 (when hooked up to Comcast cable)
75.94.255.12 , 64.13.115.12 (when hooked up to the Clear modem)
and 75.75.75.75, 8.8.8.8, 4.2.2.6, 209.244.0.3 - all of which have very good response times from our location.
All else on the network works fine.  And both of these machines, the BD player as well as the WDTV show correct DNS info.  Again - taking out the E4200 and replacing it with the old DIR-655 also makes the two machines causing trouble with the E4200 behave alright.  Hence it's not a DNS server address issue per se.
Connected to the E4200 using Ethernet cables both, the WDTV and the BD player, work fine.
Which really leads me to believe the problem is how the E4200 handles streaming aspects over wireless.

  • Can't move files to Hard Drive

Trying to transfer files from my downloads folder to my WD Passport Essential I get the "File to large for format" mesage. The external drive is formated is DOS. I have tried Exfat and it works but the problem I have is I can't hook up the drive to my media center! The WD media doesn't even see the drive. I looked at the "get info" on the file and it's not locked it is a large file but I have checked it on a friend Mac and it works on his no problem! We both are running 10.7.2? Seems this problem started when I upgraded to lion? Didn't have a prob with leopard.

A quote from your post; "The WD TV Live Hub Media Center, WD TV Live Streaming Media Player,WD TV Live (WDBAAx0000NBK) HD Media Player, WD TV Live Plus HD Media Player, and the WD TV HD Media Player (Gen 2) supports NTFS, FAT32, HFS and HFS+ file systems for media playback. This is a direct quote from WD support site. So it supports HFS & HFS+."
They are saying it supports HFS+ but that means only if you format it as HFS+. No disk drive is capable of working with all of those formats at the same time. It is impossible.

  • Can't install updates to hard drive

I am also having difficulty with my wireless connection after recent upgrades, and have been attempting to reinstall both Airport Extreme Update 2007-03 and Mac OSX Server Update 10.4.9 to see if this will solve the problem. However, each time I attempt to install either, I am greeted by an exclamation mark in a red bubble, and a message stating that the hard drive 'does not meet the requirements for this update'. This seems to be a relatively recent development; I was able to perform a similar procedure without difficulty a few weeks ago.
Might I have accidentally altered by settings to make updates unacceptable?

  • Captureing from a dv camera....

i have been using the capture feature in fcp to log each in and out i want to be a clip and then batch capture but i want to be able to just press one button and have it capture every clip i shot from where ever i have it start from to the end or when ever i stop it... basically i pressed record on the caemare and 10 seconds later i press it again to stop... i do this repeatedly having more than one clip... is there any way to import these as seperate clips in fcp soo i dont have to sit there and set which i want each clip to be? i remember in iMovie you can do this by pressing one button and it would import them like that...

What you are doing with logging each clip then batch capturing is the first basic edit of the material. Do you bring in EVERY clip on the tape? Spending a little time with the footage before it comes into the system is useful as you see the material and have a chance to eliminate bad, unusable clips before they are captured. In some cases this will save you a significant amount of time in not having to sort through and eliminate all the junk on your hard drive.
However, if you want to do the "play the tape, capture the clips automatically" thing, look into Capture Live Plus by Squarebox software. It will cut up a long tape capture into individual files. There is also a compatable database application (CatDV) that will help you track complex media projects as well.
    good luck.

  • Setting up "Mail" on iTouch (new update)

I downloaded the new update along with the new widgets etc. However when i go to "Mail" I only get Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Mac mail, and AOL mail. Could anyone please explain to me how to setup the mail for hotmail? I am having some troubles setting it up. For example, under the setting "Incoming Mail Server" the Host Name, User Name and Password, how do i fill these up? And the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" How do I fill the heading of those out? Seems kind of ignorant adding so many e-mails but not hotmail even though it's one of the most popular emails around. Anyways any help will be appreciated. Thanks
    Nik

    POP3 Server: pop3.live.com (port 995)
    SMTP Server: smtp.live.com (port 25)
Note: Make sure to mark the box that indicates that your "outgoing server requires authentication" since in most email clients, this is not checked by default.
Username: Your full email address (including @hotmail.com or @msn.com)
Password: Your Windows Live ID password
Important: Our POP3 service requires that you use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) with the POP and SMTP connection and use SMTP authentication.
This got the system working on my itouch after upgrading to a live plus account. However I cannot choose which emails to retrieve and it;'s only showing me emails from 2007. If anyone can assist I'd appreciate it.

  • Local USB "There's no media in the current folder"

Hi Forum, I have a no media in current folder error with my WDTV Plus. I searched the forum and googled for hours but everyone seems to have this problem with network streaming or the suggestions don't work for me. My media is on a Seagate 3TB USB Drive which is connected directly to the WDTV, no ethernet cable in use, everything local. This setup worked for three years now. Two months ago, some subfolders began to have the "no media" error, but most of the files worked. Now I get this error in the root and I am not able to play a single file. The USB drive is formatted with ntfs. What I noticed:- I also get an error when I choose USB Storage in the menu (right before it would show the folder structure where now the no media error appears). It says "Unable to create media library. check your storage setting".- the .wd-tv folder in the root of the disk always has the last changed date 01.01.2000, all other files have timestamps from the last 3 years.- When I go to file management on the wdtv I can see all my files and folders. I can even delete and copy them around. What I've done so far:- Updated to the newest firmware, nothing changed.- Plugged my USB disk to my laptop and checked it for errors. This took 48 hours and there where 0.0% errors, destroyed blocks or something.- Played around with the folder structure, copied files to other folders... I also read that there has to be at least one media file in every subfolder, otherwise wdtv would come up with the no media error. So I did this -> nothing changed.- Deleted the .wd-tv folder on the disk many times. Played around with the "create media library" setting on the wdtv. It can create a media library (the .wd-tv folder), despite the error "unable to create media library".- Permissions on all folders and subfolders on the USB drive are full control for everyone.- When I plug in a 16GB usb flash drive with some video files on it everything works fine. could it be that there are some currupted files that wdtv can't read? If so, how could I detect them?Has anybody occured the same sort of problem? Thanks in advance,Sandro

  • Windows 8 Explorer cannot see NAS drive on WiFi connected laptop

I have several devices on my home network. Windows XP PC's, Windows 7 PC's, Android tablets, and 2 Windows 8 laptops.  All the devices can see the harddrive attached to my WiFi router except for one of the Windows 8 laptops and I can't seem to figure
    out a solution.
That laptop, compared to all the other devices, connects by a Wireless G adapter vs. Wirless N for everything else, but I don't think that's the problem.
It CAN access the NAS drive through Windows Media Player, however, only media in that case and not documents.
Why can it see the drive through WMP but not Explorer???  ...and what's the fix?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
The laptop has a Windows 8 32-bit upgrade installed.
Windows Explorer shows the Media access for the drive, but not the drive itself.

For a regedit newbie, can you please provide step-by-step details how to: "create a new DWORD entry with the name EnableLinkedConnections and value 1". Is this a new line to be
    inserted? Thanks.
Below is my situation. I posted an earlier version of this query on Microsoft Community and was advised to move to here on Technet.
    I am having trouble mapping
and connecting shared drives on my NAS using WiFi. I have three new Acer i5-4th Gen laptops running Windows 8 with Intel 7260-N WiFi cards and Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 loaded. My NAS is also new. It is a Zyxel NSA325, replacing a
WD My Book World Edition. The hard drives from two such WD boxes went into the Zyxel. So I do not have another NAS on hand to test. My router is unchanged. It is a Netgear WNDR3700v1 pre-MIMO dual-band N-router.
One of the new Acers is a V7-482PG-6662. The other two laptops are M5-583P-6428 machines. The Acer V7 never had a problem with connections – neither via Ethernet nor via WiFi. Both
M5’s had troubles at first via WiFi. Then I got one to work. But the second Acer M5 stubbornly only connects reliably via Ethernet; the NAS only shows reliably under Network on File Manager when using Ethernet. Maybe one in five times that I reboot with WiFi,
can I see the NAS under Network on File Manager.
I also have an old Dell Win-7 Ultimate desktop. It has no problems connecting via shared drives to the NAS via WiFi. I also have an old WD TV-Live Plus attached via Ethernet that accesses
the NAS via Media Server, not via Network Shares. All PCs plus a Samsung Android Tablet can see / access the NAS reliably as a media server over WiFi.
I went through many, many recommendations from the internet, trying to fix the WiFi problem for the Acer M5s. For example:
Turn on various or all Advanced Network Sharing options, e.g., Discovery and File Sharing
Make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks is on
Set up and reset Windows Credentials for users
Enter net config server /autodisconnect:-1 as admin
Make sure that Network List Service is started on automatic (as well as not on)
Tried using Net Use commands to map the drive, but got error message 53s
    Updated WiFi card drivers
Multiple cycles of closing down all network advanced sharing settings, then uninstalling and reinstalling network adapters via device manager, then opening up all network advanced sharing settings (as described
in the technet item: fix-for-cannot-access-nas-drives-sharefolder-is-not-accessible-or-error-code-0x80070035 ).
Various cycles and sequences of rebooting and leaving machines on with the hope that they would connect.
I have not tried any of the advice about reg editing or setting different MTU values. Most of such advice online dates from 2009. And it was not needed to get the one Acer M5 machine
    working.
After cycling through the items above, the one Acer M5 started listing the NAS occasionally under Network in File Manager. At first this only happened in like 1 in 20 reboots. But
I started getting luckier. And after one round of closing down shares and reinstalling adapters, it started to work reliably. And has kept working ever since.
I now have the second Acer M5 connecting via WiFi in about one in five reboots. But this is not satisfactory. Normally, the NAS only shows under Network on File Manger, and only allows
drives to be mapped, when the laptop is connected via Ethernet. I tried comparing adapter settings between when using Ethernet and using WiFi (for example, that the same Microsoft LLDP protocols are ticked). I also put both Acer M5s side by side to compare
settings. I also tried repairing Windows 8 and reloading all Windows updates. But I have not thus far gone all the way back to a complete Windows 8 restore to factory conditions.
    Advice, help please, thanks.
    Wait for Win-8.1?

  • Help with setting up email. FRUSTRATED! :(

    Hey guys/girls,
Just got the iPhone 3G today and I'm trying to setup my hotmail account.
I paid to make it Windows Live Plus so I can access it via POP3 or what not.
So I managed to get the account set up on the iPhone, but I can't seem to be able to view my emails properly.
For example, it shows me the oldest email first, and doesn't seem to be re-freshing right. Each time I get a new email, it doesn't show up on the iPhone.
any ideas what I might be doing wrong? I've been playing around with it for about 5 hours and no luck

    Hi there,
Thanks for the reply, but that doesn't seem to be solving my issue.
Regardless of what I choose, it'll still only show me 100 (or 25, 50 or 200, depending on how many I choose to have there) of the oldest emails.
How do I sort it so that it shows me the newest ones first, and then automatically grabs everything else?
    Thanks
