WDS question.

I currently have a Linksys wireless router with a wireless bridge. I have 3 workstations hardwired to my wireless bridge. None of my workstations have 802.11n capability. (All 802.11g) Can I configure 2 airport extreme base stations in a WDS configuration such that the 3 workstations plugged into the remote/range extender benefit from the 802.11n link between the 2 basestations AND still support 102.11g wireless clients? (Wireless clients can connect via either airport as 802.11g clients and the hardwired clients on the remote airport will benefit from the speed of the 802.11n)

Lakota, Welcome to the discussion area!
In 802.11n only mode, you can extend the network using 2 802.11n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). However, since they are operating in 802.11n only mode, none of your 802.11g clients would be able to connect.
You could use WDS to join 2 AEBS and your 802.11g clients could connect. But then you wouldn't get 802.11n speeds.

  • [Server 2008R2] General WDS Questions.

Using standard WDS + WAIK, I have some questions. I am starting with the absolute basics to ensure everything works the way it should. We are trying to push out images to our client computers as we sell many computers and spend much time configuring
computers individually. We are probably going to use MDT but, setting up the infrastructure correctly is key right now.
This is how we have our network basically setup..
    VLAN A: Contains workstations.
VLAN B: Contains the WDS server and client networks. Each client network has its own DNS, DHCP, and ADDS and its server is a domain controller. Each network is separated by a DELL Sonicwall.  The WDS server has 2 NIC interfaces. NIC1 is static to our
main DHCP.  NIC2 is setup for a client network's DHCP. They are not bridged, teamed or other similar bonding state.
Right now,  after connecting the client NIC to the respective client switch, we have to dis-join the WDS server from its current domain and join it to the client domain for it to serve the client workstations a PXE boot and BCD / boot image properly.
This method is tedious and inefficient and is not a proper solution.
    My questions are:
    1) Is there any way to properly serve computers that are under the client domain while staying on our main domain?
    2) Can I pre-stage computers by the "Approve and Name" function into the client ADDS with the WDS being on our main domain?
    (=Chris=)

    Hi TheArchitect912,
Could you clarify your question “Contains the WDS server and client networks. Each client network has its own DNS, DHCP, and ADDS and its server is a domain controller.”?
I am not quite understand your description about your environment.
If you unable to PXE boot WDS Client which is in a different subnet as that of WDS Server & DHCP Server, please confirm you have configured IP Helper table on the VLAN
    A and VLAN B router.
If you want to predefine the computer name role you can use the WDS Client Naming Policy.

  • GUI v CLI config and WDS question

    Hello-
I am attempting to deploy a wireless network. I have purchased two 1242Gs and one 1310G WAPs. My goal is to have a WPA V1 protected network utilizing WDS to allow seemless roaming at the location, with a second SSID for guest access that is directed to the gateway. It would be nice if this had a WPA pw also. The 1310 is external to the building where the other two 1242s are. I have attached configuration examples for each. One of my problems is I have to allow support for a legacy Crestron TPMC-10 media controller which is very picky about how its WiFi radio works. Crestron recommends these config lines:
    guest-mode
    mbssid dtim-period 10
    speed basic-1.0 2.0 5.5 6.0 9.0 11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 48.0 54.0
no preamble-short ! CE devices only support Long Preamble
    channel 2462 ! channel 1,6 0r 11 only |
station-role root ! only one AP may host the SSID intended for TPMC-10
    connectivity.
    beacon dtim-period 3
no dot11 qos mode ! QOS negatively effects CE connectivity
no dot11 extension AIRONET ! AIRONET extensions negatively effects CE
    connectivity

I have read that using the GUI versus the CLI will leave artifacts and other commands not required for operation. Wondering on other's opinions of this and also any recommendations on how to simplify the config files.
I have attempted to create config files using the CLI examples provided by Crestron but that tends only allow the Crestron to connect and not laptops.
    Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated.

  • WDS & MDT 2012 Integration Questions: Do I need an install image on WDS if I'm multicasting from MDT

I'm running WDS & MDT 2012 on Server 2012 for my deployment solution.  I have a few questions about what happens when you integrate WDS & MDT.
Perhaps this is a simple question, but if WDS multicasts the installation image from MDT, do I need to have an image in the installation folder of WDS?  I have the "Enable multicasting" box checked whenever I update my deployment share
Also, my server is running X64 architecture, so I have the x64 WAIK installed.  but I'm having issues editing the unattend.xml on my server because my images are all X86.  Keeping in mind that I already have the X64 WAIK installed, can i install
the X86 WAIK tools on my server?

Sorry, that's two questions you only get one... Just kidding...
FOr MDT, you don't import the images into the WDS console, you just need to add a Multicast namespace.

  • Mdt 2012 + WDS service on the same server. DHCP question

    Hi,
I am using MDT 2012 on Server 2008.
Boot images are placed on 6 years old WDS server running on 2003.
I need to remove WDS server (2003).
Cannot find exact instructions for enabling PXE for MDT2012.
I don't need introduction guides. But clear few lines of instructions.
From quickly checking web I understand that I need:
    1. install WDS services on the same MDT2012 server 2008.
    2. import Lite Touch boot images from Deployment Share
The only point I am missing is DHCP question. In Microsoft prerequisites for WDS services, DHCP should be present on the same server were WDS is...
I watched one video on web and the guy just installs WDS on the MDT server and not mentioning DHCP at all.
Sure that there is DHCP server serving multiple subnets on the network.
My confusion about DHCP on WDS prerequisite comes from not having DHCP services installed on old WDS 2003 machine.
So why it is required on WDS service in server 2008/2012?
Can somebody confirm that DCHP must exist on the same server were MDT and WDS services are enabled.
And is it a valid option to have all 3 on one Server machine if DHCP is really needed for enabling PXE in MDT environment?
I saw the info about ports 67 (should be disabled) and 60 for PXE enabled.
Will appreciate DHCP part explanation and how to...
    Thanks.

    RL69,
in my environment DHCP serves multiple subnets. For now no need to serve client machines on different subnets. The Deployments will be done on subnet were MDT resides. If necessary PXE relay could be enabled on Core switch (or where necessary).
So if I understand correctly for a scenario above all what I need to do for PXE enabled MDT is:
to add WDS role/service on the same MDT server and import boot images.
    Right?
Will do it right after your confirmation :)

  • Question about WDS

I have an Airport Extreme and 2 Airport Expresses. I setup them to use WDS, and everything seems to be working fine. Both of my Airport Expresses connect to the Extreme wirelessly, but my question is does my computer connect to the best signal of the 3 base stations? I ask this because the previous setup I had, I used the 2 Airport Express units as separate network names and now with all three using WDS I have just one network name.

The graphite AirPort base station (ABS) is an 802.11b only device with only a single Ethernet port and NO USB port.
    Identifying AirPort hardware
It sounds like you do NOT have a graphite ABS but instead have an earlier round 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
Try following the steps described at this link.

  • Wds vs extended network questions

little background first...task is to setup a closed WPA2 wireless network consisting of 4 mac minis (duo cores/10.4.10 fully updated) and 3 or 4 AEBS' on the 5GHz band. One AEBS will be connected via ethernet to an existing router (DHCP) while the others need to extend the network. I've had the masses working exceptionally well as a WDS (main/relay/remote) and as an extended network (main/ext/ext/ext) in a test area but have a few questions i've been unable to find answers to:
    1. As an extended network, how many AEBS' can be setup to extend the network? (as bridges)
    2. Any way to enable/select the 5GHz band for a WDS setup?
    3. All the mini's except for one with Airport Admin 5.1 installed join the network automatically after sleep, shutdown etc. The fix on the support page works but is this issue possibly due to the new airport admin util? I'd like to keep the WPA2 security in place even tho it's a closed network and have a local machine able to administer these things if possible.
    cheers for a quick response.

shaker440, Welcome to the discussion area!
    1. As an extended network, how many AEBS' can be setup to extend the network? (as bridges)
I'm sure there is a maximum but I don't know the number.
    2. Any way to enable/select the 5GHz band for a WDS setup?
WDS is an 802.11b/g feature and therefore not supported when using 5 GHz. However 802.11n has a new "extend network" feature.
I'd like to keep the WPA2 security in place even tho it's a closed network and have a local machine able to administer these things if possible.
Is this a question? WPA2 is great security and you should use it. A "closed" network is a deception and only fools you into thinking it adds any security. The SSID/Network name is still broadcast between any connected client and the base station. Therefore the network name is easily detectable.
Any machine can be used to configure the AEBS at any time. There is no machine designated as the controller or admin.

  • Question about Airport Express in WDS bridge mode with wired clients

I am looking to buy an Airport Extreme N router, and then use the Express I already have to extend my network using WDS. I intend to setup the Express as a bridge in WDS mode and then connect a wired client to the Express. The question is can I connect a multi port switch or hub to the Express so that multiple wired clients can use the bridge or does Express only support one wired client. I looked at the FAQ at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108038 but it doesn't address that.
    Thanks

Hmmm, I haven't actually tried that myself, but it should work since, as a Remote Base Station in a WDS, the Ethernet port on the AX acts like a LAN port.

  • New Airport Extreme N wireless network setup questions (WDS, D-Link)

I have finally been able to set up my Airport Extreme N network after numerous attempts over the last few weeks. I was getting a very weak signal in front of the house where my wife's G4 is connected wireless to an old Airport card and where all the systems (XBOX 360; Wii and PS3) are also wirelessly hitting the network.
The current configuration is as follows: In the office in the back of the house I have an Airport Extreme N basestation connected to the cable modem and have three workstations (One Mac and two PCs) wired to it. I set up a WDS network, so I set up the Airport Expresses as remotes. In the living room I have another Airport Extreme N basestation (as a remote as well) that is hooking up to the XBOX 360, Wii and PS3. I have enabled WEP security (not effecting the XBOX 360 since it is now "wired"). Here is the weird thing - I have a PC laptop with a D-Link Xtreme N card ( DWA-652) that cannot connect to the network. I enter the WEP password but it does not connect. Am I missing something on the basestation setup? Do I need to add the MAC address of the card anywhere. When I use the laptop's built in wireless it connects with no problem. By creating a WDS network did I disable the n functionality of the base station(s)? I am a lttle condused.
Also, prior to going to an all Apple wireless network setup, I bought the D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router (DIR-655). I was regretfully about to return it to Best Buy but I had an idea which may or may not work. I know that the D-Link does not support WDS but if I was to set it up as the main router and added the "main" Airport basestation as a wired bridge could I maintain the WDS network? The reason I ask this is because I would love to keep the gigabit for the wired machines in the office. Also, I am wondering if the D-Link notebook card is incompatible with the Airport network.
All I know is that I have spent alot of money and sleepless nights just trying to set this network up but thankfully Best Buy has a thirty day return policy so I will return what I can't use.
I appreciate any help and advice anyone can give me.
    Thanks.

    Hello!
I have noticed that some manufacturers (Linksys and possibly D-LINK) only accept upper-case WEP keys only.
This drove me nuts when trying to integrate a Linksys PC PCMCIA card into my old "g" network.
As far as using WEP, it's bad and broken; but I understand that your choice of security is limited to the devices that you are trying to network.
For what it's worth, I have my network set up with the AEBS 'n' connected to my Cable Modem, with one of the ports going to a gigabit switch for my wired network. I then have two AirTunes set up as WDS extensions for music & Internet delivery to two separate areas. The AEBS 'n" serves up DHCP and routing for the entire network.
It works quite well; I get 54 mbits/sec for the two WDS AirTunes, and 145 mbits/sec to one of my ATV's. My gigabit wired machines see data rates of 15-27 MBytes/sec (depending on the type of transfer).
    Good luck!

  • Airport Express, using 2 in WDS mode, simple question.

when my router gave out (used to hook an apple laserwriter to my wireless network), i picked up another airport express, as i was told with 2 of them i could utilize the ethernet port on the 2nd to use for my ethernet printer. everything works, but in the airport utility setup, i thought i'd be able to add the 2nd express to the network, not extend the network (the option read to share a usb printer or for airtunes). i liked this option, as i don't need the extra range, and would be happy without the extra signal running. unfortunately, set up like this, my printer cannot be found via printer set-up/appletalk. i need to select the option to 'extend my network' in the airport utility to see the printer.
so i am assuming that in the 'add to network' mode the ethernet port is disabled, but usb and airtunes is enabled? is there any way around this, perhaps in manual set-up?
    thanks.

so i am assuming that in the 'add to network' mode the ethernet port is disabled, but usb and airtunes is enabled? is there any way around this, perhaps in manual set-up?
Your assumption is correct. When configured as a "wireless client," the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) Ethernet port is NOT enabled. To enable it, it must be configured in a WDS with another base station.

  • Medium Setup Question. Wired between? WDS or Extend?

Hi, I have a Medium sized network. I need to know how to effiecienly setup my network for the best bandwidth and connection strength for the following:
    Users:    25-30
    Connections:  WiFi ONLY
Source:       Single IP (NO DHCP from Router) (2Mbps Down, 512Kbps Up)
    Security:     WPA2 and MAC Filtering
    Area:          100ft x 100ft, Single Floor
    Equipment: 1 x Airport Extreme (5th Generation)
                     1 x Airport Extreme (1st Generation)
                     1 x Airport Express (2nd Generation)
1 x Amped Wireless AP600EX Long Range Access Point (future use)
                      Cat 5e Cable
Should I Connect the 5Gen Extreme directly to the Router (wired), then add the 1Gen Extreme (wired) on the other side of the area to a port on the 5Gen Extreme. Both to provide WiFI.
I prefer to have a single broadcast network and allow users to "bounce" between the hardware seamlessly, as they are mobile and but mainly evenly distributed thoroughout the area.
WDS? 5Gen=main 1Gen=remote? Express&Long Range=remote? Will wired connection from the main help? If so, do the settings change?
    or
Extend? Still connect wired between 5Gen and 1Gen Extreme? If so, do the settings change? Same or different channel?
Thanks for your help in advance,
    Vern

You would connect the Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the "main" AirPort to the WAN port (circle icon) on the "remote" Airport.
If your "main" AirPort is working OK, you do not need to make any changes to it.
Is there any efficient way to divide up the NAT? Meaning, can both routers supply IP's:
No. The "main" AirPort must handle all DHCP and NAT for the entire network. The "remote" AirPort must be configured in Bridge Mode as I mentioned earlier.
See this Apple Support document for more details:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
I'm trying to take the load off one router by adding more ROUTERS.
You will create IP address conflicts and Double NAT errors on the network. I would recommend that you do NOT do this if you want the network to operate reliably and correctly.

  • HT4262 wds MAc address question

I have a wds network working with
    - a time capsule as main
    - a n exporess as relay
    - an airport extreme as end node
it is working but slow; as I was wondering if there was any traffic between the end node and the main station i ask myselve:
should the remote stations mac address be allowed by the relay only  or the relay and the mainstation?
    any toughts on this?
    tx
    diederik

    it is working but slow;
Unfortunately, that is what WDS does. The bandwidth on the network is cut in half for each relay or remote. Since WDS only runs at "g" wireless speeds, when you have a relay and remote configured, the entire network runs at only 25% of normal "g" wireless speeds.  This would be about 13-14 Mbps link speed.  The "actual" throughput would probably be around 6-7 Mbps.
I was wondering if there was any traffic between the end node and the main station
It depends on how you have configured the main base station and remote.  If you "allow" the remote to connect to the main, then the remote will try to "hop" over the relay, so there would be direct traffic between the remote and main.
If you do not "allow" the remote to connect to the main, then the remote must be allowed to connect to the relay. In this case, there will not be direct traffic between the main and the remote.  The main connects to the relay and relay connects to the remote.
    any toughts on this?
    Avoid WDS if possible

  • WDS - A simple question

    Hi all.
I didn't understand one thing about the WDS domain for the APs.
I understood that I need LEAP to authenticate one AP into the WDS domain. But, after all APs are logged into the WDS, the WDS will make faster my EAP-TLS authentications too? My network is all in EAP-TLS, and it take some time to reathenticate a client when it moves to another Access point.
    Thanks

Refer the following document for information on WDS,

  • Quick question: What is "WDS"?

What does it mean? I keep seeing the term but not sure what it is. Thanks.

WDS stands for "Wireless Distribution Service" and is a technology used by some wireless routers to connect routers together in a network wirelessly.
If your router does not support WDS then it cannot connect wirelessly to another router, even if it itself is a wireless router.
i.e. a Netgear DG834G is a wireless router/modem and can wirelessly connect with wireless clients such as laptops and desktop computers that have a wireless adapter. It cannot however connect wirelessly to an Airport Extreme N wirelessly as the Netgear doesn't support WDS, the only way to connect the routers is with a physical ethernet cable running between the two, not always possible or desirable in the home!
    Hope that helps, Grumpy.

  • Questions n general

I have few questions that bothering me, I appreciate if you could answer -
    1. I have IDOC-XI-File Scenario.
    A. I know how to configure R/3 to send IDOC to XI, and then XI-File configuration. I did not know How to handle acknowledgment to update the status records on sending IDOC in this scenario? I read how-to doc on acknowledgment, it assumes the receiving party is also on R/3 where they configured AUDIT to send response from receiving party. But this case is receiving party is non-SAP Application.
    B. If the file IDOC is configured to send Purchase Order collectively, assume it has million records, and records related to same PO are not in SEQ order.
If we define ccBPM Scenario to correlate by PO, does it take one PO and process all records against one PO and starts with another PO? How does it work internally, I am curious on performance point of view.
    3. File-XI-R/3(IDOC) Scenario.
If the file has records with different structure, we advised to use module conversion. Even with I do not understand how the mapping enabled with relevant record structure? How does it work? I read how-to guide on this module conversion, it only explained on how to use module conversion part, does not include mapping part

    1. Since I only have one modem, one account, etc I would set the AEX using WDS, right?
    Yes
    2. I believe I read somewhere that WDS ?halves? the connection speed of ALL devices on the network?
Yes each WDS link cuts the available wireless bandwidth in half.
    3. I don't want the AEX on all the time for both power draw reasons and longevity (as well as minimzing any performance impacts from WDS when not in use). Are there any problems with keeping it plugged into a power strip and turning it off when not in use? This is obviously the same as just unplugging it, so I was curious if it "tends not to do well" in those situations or if it could care less.
    Shouldn't cause a big problem.
    4. AEX as a portable wireless station means I could be in a hotel, plug an ethernet cable into the AEX, configure the AEX to be a base station then I'd have wireless in my room?
Yes. The AirPort Express (AX) doesn't know if it is at home or in a hotel. The setup and operation is the same.
