WDS wired and wifi with mixed airports

Hi,
I've been having a heck of a time with 'fixing' a mixed wired and wifi network. 2 days so far and it's still not how I want it.
It was working okay, then I started getting errors with IP's being duplicated, so I started over.
Here's what I have :
Orange France Livebox (dsl router)
ABS-g (dual ethernet)
ABS-n (pre-mixed g/n environment)
2 AExpress-g
Netgear Switch
Original setup :
livebox to netgear switch, feeding wired ABS-g (dual ethernet) and wired ABS-n (pre-mixed g/n environment). ABS-g acting as Main for WDS and feeding ABS-n via the switch, plus 2 AExpress-g via wifi.
It all worked for about 2 months. Then the problem with duplicate IP addresses.
So now the setup I have is :
Livebox wired to ABS-n, which then feeds to Netgear Switch to LAN wired, plus, 2 AExpress-g on WDS via wifi.
This works.
Here's the problem :
I want to extend the wifi network via wired, because there is some distance between the base stations. HOWEVER. Whenever I connect one of the base stations, which is configured as WDS Remote, via wired, I instantly loose my internet connection ... everywhere. Wired and wifi.
The base stations get self assigned addresses and I have to take the cable out of the ABS-Remote and then, take the cable (from the Livebox to the ABS-n) out of the ABS-n and put it directly into my Mac, to get the connection back.
I have restarted, zeroed everything many times. Finally I have narrowed the problem down to trying to have a wired connection to one of the WDS remotes. As soon as I plug a cable into a WDS Remote, I loose the connection.
Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong, or how I could reconfigure to enable either the ABS-g (dual ethernet) or one of the ABSExpress's to operate via a wired connection, thus much more effectively extending the wifi network.
Any help/pointers much appreciated.

Please take a look at this Apple Support reference to see if it will help you identify your AirPort: Identifying AirPort Hardware
I have seen that link elsewhere on this board. Unfortunately it's out of date. Yes you can go to the first page and visually identify your airport unit, but there is no model number next to the pictures. Clicking the 'More Info' link returns an error that the page does not exist.
The same holds true for the Apple pdf about designing Airport Networks. Dead link.
In a roaming network, ALL of the AirPorts must be connected by Ethernet or be on the same Ethernet subnet. Adding the Ethernet switch to one the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) LAN ports will provide the additional wired ports for the AEBS and the AXs.
Since you have the AEBS connected by Ethernet to the Livebox, all of the AirPorts must all be reconfigured as bridges. Each will broadcast their own wireless network, but this network will have the same Network Name and use the same encryption setting. The only difference is that each AirPort must operate on a radio channel at least 3-5 channels away from that used by next nearest AirPort to prevent interference.
Having spent another hour or so, reconfiguring again, I've understood, that I cannot have an unwired ABS on a roaming network, even if it would appear to be on the same subnet. It gets no IP and is therefore lost in space.
So it would seem that anyone wishing to include some wired and some unwired ABS in a single 'seamless' network, needs to make a WDS for all the unwired ones ... and a Roaming network (with the same network name and password as the Main ABS network) for the wired ones.
This is what I have done and it looks to be working perfectly. All are in Bridge mode and all are on Automatic Channel ... and I note that the Airport Utility automatically gave a very distant channel to the wired ABS.
The network appears to be stable and fast. Phew.
As an aside ... it's a shame that the Airport Utility, whilst clearly a very clever piece of software, doesn't have more helpful explanations of what is going on. The wording is often ambiguous at best. A teeny bit more explanation would have saved me hours and hours of wasted time.

All was working fine last time I was using this same wireless and cable... about two weeks ago. Solution is the restart constantly. Or to use System Preferences and do "diagnostics" and somehow – sometimes – that reestablishes the connection.
Is there some  kind of hard reset I should do?

  • Wired and Wifi has to be connected at the same time to not be disconnected!

I work as a tester for WoW and for the past few months, I’ve had connection issues. I’ve had Comcast come out a few times and they are so eager to leave they look up the speed and say, “Oh you are good on speed” well I’m not. Every few mins I’m disconnected from the server. It’s not my computer and I’ve done every thing WoW suggested. The ONLY way I’m able to stay online for an hour is I have to have the wired and WiFi connected at the same time on my desktop. If you have any suggestions let me know.

I have posted this many, many times here. See if this helps you understand how this process works with regard to system sounds and screen rotation lock.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you are running iOS 5 or iOS 6, the system sound control is in the task bar at the bottom. Double tap the home button and swipe all the way to the right in the task bar to get to the speaker icon on the left side. Tap on that and the sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

    Strange Phenomena
We can log into Internet through the Base Station without any problem and connect to more than one Mac. But the moment we set up a bridge between the BS and the AP Expr. we can only either connect to the InterNet or use it as a network but not both. It worked for months fine but now neither of the AP Expr will do both. We have tried another BS to no avail. Does anybody no this problem is it maybe after a System Update? Our customer is getting mad as he cannot get it to work He had the BS steup and both Express's setup to be Bridges (WDS) and all worked then suddenly from one day to the next no more.It doesn't matter how you configure the Express it will tell you that it cannot start a remote connection to the BS. All very Strange

Hello macfar14. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For just streaming iTunes and/or for sharing a USB printer, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) just needs to be configured as a wireless client ... which you already attempted to do.
Just to be sure nothing was missed, here are the basic steps to do this:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing wireless network's Network Name or SSID>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • How do I set up my Xfinity Gateway modem Wifi with my Airport using same IP address?  I need step by step instructions.

I want to use Xfinity Gateway modem WIFI with my Apple Airport, using same IP address.  Apple store says this will work. I need step by step instrucions on how to do this.
    Thank you

I have had the AirPort for 5+ years.  Have had a Comcast modem for even longer.  My husband and I have iPads.  We can only get wifi connection within a very short range of our AirPort.  I noticed that Comcast/Xfinity was advertising their new Gateway modem with extended wireless wifi so I turned in my old modem to Comcast and picked up the new Gateway model.  After going through several issues with Comcast I tried to install my new modem and was told by Comcast that I cannot use both the Gateway modem and my Airport for WIFI, it's one or the other.  I went to the Apple store and asked the same question and was told that I can have both connected using the same IP address for both.  I am not very computer savy and need some basic, one step at a time instructions on how to add the Xfinity modem to my existing AirPort network for extending my WIFI.  I think I expained that correctly.
The Comcast cable is connected to my Modem and then there is another connection between the modem and the AirPort via USB cord.
Is there somewhere on the AirPort/TimeCapsule device that tells me the exact model of my AirPort?
Thank you for any advice you can give me.

  • Extending BT HomeHub 3 wifi with Apple Airport Ext...

Does anyone know if this is possible?
In the Airport Utility, upon selecting to extend a wireless network and selecting the HomeHub, it says this network cannot be extended. Any ideas?

    Hello Keith,
I'm afraid it can't be done. You can run two separate networks with the Airport and the Homehub, but that's about it.
However, when you do run the two wireless networks separately (but WAN of the Airport plugged into a Homehub ethernet port), wireless interference is the order of the day.  I found it best to stick with the one network and I chose the Airport (Timecapsule, but you catch my drift ;-).
You can disable the Homehub Wireless using:
    http://192.168.1.254
click on A-Z in the top right
    Wireless connections, enable or disable
    Wireless network enable, check No.
    Click Apply.

  • Massive difference between wired and wifi speed fr...

Our new wired Home hub is delivering around 36 MBPS but on wife is only getting 25... I know we lose some but this is ridiculous! Any thoughts a to why please?

There are many reasons for slower speeds on wireless and that is the reason that all ISPs will not guarantee speeds on wireless. Your speed difference is probably better than most.
Speeds can be effected by interference, distance from source, standard of receiving device, construction of property walls floors etc,
Some things you can try to improve it is check that the wireless card drivers on your device are upto date. Use the card manufactures website for that.
Download, install and run inSSider. It will show you the wireless channels and which one your Homehub is on. You want to find the channel with the least congestion, ie. least number of users. Once you have that you need to change your homehub onto that channel.

  • Best Way to Set up Wired and Wireless with Junction Box

I have searched but not found my exact situation. I have a cable modem in a junction box in the laundry room. I have wired ethernet access in three rooms. I would like to set up a wireless network. If I use a WRTG54 wireless router inside the junction box, what kind of wireless signal would I get? This would be the easiest, but I don't know how good the signal would be with the wireless router mounted inside the box.
My second option would be to have someone wire another phone outlet somewhere in the house and use a wireless access point at that location (I already have a WAP I can use).
The third option is to use a regular router in the junction box and then use a wireless router in one of the three rooms, which would be wired to one computer and also serve as the wireless access point. Does this work?
    Thanks for any assistance.

You can set-up your wrt54g router along with your modem and use an access point(wap54g) in repeater mode and use it to connect all the wireless devices across your home...

  • Putaway and picking in ERP-WM with SU and batches with mixed stock

    Hello all,
I configured a WM warehouse with SU management, and batch management. We have bulk storage for example of 20 pallets. each pallet may have its own SU and batch numbers. As a result we may have in the bulk storage 20 SUs with 20 different batches.
    I have 2 problems:
    1. in Putaway strategy B (Bulk) - although the storage type is configured to allow mixed storage - automatically the system chooses the next empty bin. How can I force the system to add to existing stock instead?
    2. in Outbound Delivery (when the batch number is not entered in the delivery), when I create the TO (through LT03), the system proposes a FIFO batch number (again, we are talking about Bulk storage). How do I tell the system not to determine the batch number - but instead take it from the chosen SU on confirmation?
    Thanks,
    Isaac

    Hi,
    1. in Putaway strategy B (Bulk) - although the storage type is configured to allow mixed storage - automatically the system chooses the next empty bin. How can I force the system to add to existing stock instead?
In Bulk system would only one SU type perBin. If the next SU is of diferent SU type then it would propose the next Bin.
    2. in Outbound Delivery (when the batch number is not entered in the delivery), when I create the TO (through LT03), the system proposes a FIFO batch number (again, we are talking about Bulk storage). How do I tell the system not to determine the batch number - but instead take it from the chosen SU on confirmation?
In this case you do not setup batch determination at delivery or WM level.
Since this is Bulk, system will allow for SU number to be entered during picking.
However the Batch number population in TO upon SU selection is doubtful.
    Hope this helps.

  • Playstation 3 can't get on wifi with new Airport Express

Hi guys. I got the new Airport Express that was released a few days ago. My Mac and other iDevices all connect fine but for whatever reason my PS3 has issues resolving an IP address or whatever. At first I thought I'd solved it by turning off the only DHCP Reservation I had on (for my iMac) but the next day it's not connecting again.
Unfortunately I'm not much of a networking whiz.
I have it set to DHCP (not Static or PPoE) And I'm not sure what else to share but I'd really like to solve this.
It connected once or twice in attempts so I know neither the Airport Express Base Station nor the Ps3 is broken.
    Just totally stumped here. :(

As an update, I noticed that the brief moments when my PS3 would attempt to connect, I would see another IP on my Airport Express Base Station. 10.0.1.3
So, wanting to try something out, I went into DHCP reservations on my AEBS and added a DHCP reservation for 10.0.1.3 and assigned my PS3's MAC address to it. I was able to connect instantly.
However, I've been connected briefly before, so only time will tell if it sticks. At this point I don't consider my situation resolved. Clearly my inability to connect has something to do with IP addresses and maybe the 'dynamic' one the PS3 sometimes gets assigned by the AEBS is something one of my other devices is already blocking or using?
I'm not a whiz at this stuff, so if anyone has any insights as to a good way to set up DHCP reservations so that everything works, I'm all ears.
Would it be wise to take the iMac, AppleTV, 2 iPads, and 2 iPhones and assign them ALL different DHCP reservations so that no one steps on anyone else's toes, so to speak?

  • G585 wired and wifi networking problems - please help!!

Just purchased a new G585 a couple weeks ago.  After trying Win 8, I realized what a complete POS of an OS it is and installed Win 7.
    2 Major problems:
    1.  Ethernet connection erratically disconnects - no rhyme or reason - sometimes works other times doesn't.  I've tested on two diff networks - the same behavior.
    2.  Cannot install wifi - tried the drivers from Lenovo site - no go - tried drivers someone had recommended (broadcom wifi5.100.196.18) these did not work either - device still unrecognized in device manager
This is my 9th Lenovo laptop over the years.  The others were great.  This one seems to have serious issues.
    Can anyone assist please???

I have had these same connectivity issue since I bought the laptop in March of 2013.  It is January 2014, and is will still drop connectivity for no apparent reason, be incredibly slow when it IS connected, and sometimes just sop seeing the network altogether (and this happens on every netwrok I have attempted to connect to).
The most obnoxious thing is that after spending several hours over multiple days on the phone with tech supprt, they said I needed to send it in for repair.  So I did.  It was gone two weeks and when I got ti back, they claimed that had repaired it, but everything was exactly the same.
Combine that with the lack of help for the company and the fact that this seems to be the only laptop where edge swipes on the touchpad cannot be disabled, this Lenovo laptop is the worst computer I have ever owned, period.  And I mean ever.
If there ACTUALLY IS a way to fix this issue, I would love to hear it, bit nothing that anywone ever suggest actually works.  I thought maybe if I upgraded to Windows 8.1 it would help, but the Lenovo site lists the G585 as a model you shouldn't update because of monitor driver issues witht he upgrade.  It really looks to me like Lenovo has written this model off completely.
I will never buy another Lenovo product and I will direct other people to other brands.  Words cannot describe my frustration and disappointment.

  • Transfer and log with mixed formats (Canon 5D and Panasonic GF1)

I've transferred and logged files from 2 cameras (Canon 5D and Panasonic GF1).
Everything was brought in at Apple Pro Res.
I was surprised to find that I could edit 25 FPS video (from the Canon 5D) in the timeline with the GF1 (the GF1 shoots at 30 FPS).
Am I missing something here? I thought that I'd have to go through an extra step to get them to work together, but everything seems fine.
Also, the GF1 is at 720.
Is it going to look bad or not edit well together in the timeline later?
I'm new at this FCP tapeless thing. Should I be worried about how I brought this in?
    Cheers,
    dugmore

Although fcp will mix framerates in the same timeline, you will not get the best quality letting fcp make "automated" decisions.   If you're happy with the way they look, you may be ok, but I would do a test in the final form your program will be taking.  So if you're end use is a video for the web with specific settings, do a test export.  If you are going to be outputting in an interlaced format, do a test and view it on an interlaced monitor, in this format as this is an area where you may see problems.
Also, there might be problems if you are going to finish your audio in another program dealing with material in varying frame rates.
Personally, I almost always convert all material to one format (codec, pixel dimensions and frame rate) before editing.  It's just safer.  Although things will sometimes work ok without doing this, you are taking chances.
If you decide to do the conversion, I'd recommend doing it in compressor where there are options in "frame controls" and "geometry" which will give you tremendous control over the quality.
