We have a wireless internet conundrum (who doesn't).
I have a new Airport Extreme Base-station (n-standard) in our basement. I bought this after frustrations with linksys and belkin routers as far as distance from router connection is concerned. My issue is not speed. Specifically, I have the router in the finished basement with my "precious" iMac Intel which is ethernet hardwired to the base-station. The PROBLEM is getting a wireless connection with my daughter's iMac G4 on the 2nd floor.
This makes the problem interesting (from system profiler):
iMac Power PC G4 (3.3)
CPU 1 GHz\Mem 768 MB
iBook G4 Power PC (1.5)
CPU 1.42 GHz\Mem 1.5 GB
Both of the above computers have the following wireless specs:
Airport Extreme Card
Firmware 405.1(3.90.34.0.p18)
Channel 1
The iBook shown above picks up the connection perfectly well in my daughter's room with a full signal level indicator but the iMac does not connect- the signal indicator is almost zero. The iMac when moved to the first floor is fine.
The way I see it one solution might be to move the router to the first floor and take my "precious" off of hardwire connection and go wireless and experience a speed drop.
If I have no other choice, I would prefer to throw a "few bucks" at the problem and keep my "precious" blazing. Does anyone have any other ideas? Can I buy something to extend the Airport signal further? An antenna for the Power PC iMac? Could the iMac's Airport Extreme Card be bad? Is there such a thing as an wireless n-card that plugs into a UBS port?
Thanks for any suggestions.

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the basement area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal when the iMac is located there.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like KisMAC, MacStumbler, iStumbler, or IPNetMonitorX to determine potential areas of interference...and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them.

Check out QuickerTek transceivers.
Could the iMac's Airport Extreme Card be bad?
Since you mentioned that you got good performance on the 1st floor with the iMac, I would doubt there is something wrong with the AirPort Extreme Card in your iMac.

Same outfit, QuickerTek now offers 802.11n upgrades for Macs. However, the model for the iMac is internal and does not plug into a USB port.

Do you mean to say you already have a wireless network setup and thought by buying the Airport Express you just could use it for wireless music alone?
The Airport Express is chiefly a wireless router first, with the wireless music and printing as extra's.
It can be used for streaming music alone, but I think it needs to talk to network time servers and thus it gets screwed up over time not being on the internet. Also by your using your computers wifi for music streaming, no internet with your other router.
So it's a all Airport Express or back to a stereo mini cable.

  • Best way to set up wireless Internet with my situation?

    Hello All,
I am looking for a little help. I have a PBG4 and a new imac. I would like them both to have a wireless internet connection. Reason being is that there is no phone line/cable Internet connection in the room the imac is in. The cable internet comes into the living room where i often use my PBG4.
Is there a way to set up my internet connection, so that the internet cable enters a router and both computers can access the wireless connection with no cabled attached. A USB printer port would be nice also. On paper it looks like the Airport Express can do this. Is this correct? Or am I missing something. I like the fact that is has the music/audio jack is well. While shopping for routers it looks like a lot of them need a home computer to be hard wired into them.
What would my best option be?
Thank you for your time in advance. Sorry about my lack of tech knowledge.

Yes, an Airport Express would meet your needs.

    No you're not.

They can have a computer hard wired in, but for all routers it is not essential.

  • Satellite T series Wireless Internet is not working...

My router is working fine, i tap fn+F8 and it says wireless is on, the little light second from right under mousepad is on (orange) yet i have no internet connection.
And it's not like i've never had it before. it seemed to randomly go off.
I thought maybe there was a switch or soemthing dumb i've done but for some reason when i go into the little icon on the right of the toolbar (which has changed) it asks me for my ethernet cable, not even looking for any connections at all.
I tried reinstalling my router but that didn't work. I tried manually making a new connection, and also somehow tried to force it to look for my internet network.
i'm just getting desperate now and trying all sorts of things but nothing's working. i feel like it is either a major problem or a fundamental flaw in my IT skills....
please could someone suggest what is wrong, it is really i'mportant that i get wireless internet because i can't work next to the router which happens to be in my front room, next to my xbox..... which is more of a distraction than my family using the room 24/7.
    thanks

The problem is that all other computers in household are working perfectly, just this one isn't. Also i have had wireless internet before and suddenly it has stopped working and it cannot find any sort of wireless connection. Not even looking for it. my iPod is doing a better job :P
i'm wondering if the LED for wireless networks being orange is significant? I've tried to reinstall my netgear router so many times and it just freezes when it gets to 100%.
This notebook had to be sent back to Toshiba to recover it from a bue screen. But when the notebook was returned to me, wireless connection worked fine so maybe that's not relevant.
do you think i should uninstall the ethernet cable or do you think i should try to add this computer to the home network? even though it should already have done that.
    thanks :)

    Hi
I am experiencing wireless connection problem on 4s after ios 8.1 upgrade. The wireless icon appears showing that it's connected but webpages do not load. I have checked my internet connection with other devices and seems to be alright. what to do?
I have tried reseting the network settings and forgetting my wireless connection and re-connecting to it. I even backed up my phone on itunes and restored it, factory reseted it. Nothing seems to work.
Also after my upgrade to ios 8.1 my personal hotspot option under cellular data has disappeared.
Would you please help me out? I would really appreciate it.

    Hi..
Restart your router then restart the iPhone to test.
If that doesn't help, try this support article >   iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

  • My macbrook pro says connection timeout and won't connect to the internet. I have a wireless modem at home and connects to the other computers

I haven't been able to connect to the internet on my macbook pro for the last few days. I'm not very good at fixing technical difficulties, so could I please get some help. I have wireless internet in my home which is connected to another computer. I have tried turning the modem on and off but still no difference.
When I open safari, it tells me that I can't connect to the internet and when I try opening network preferences, it doesn't connect. In other words, my wireless modem works connecting the other computers, but not mine.

so I got a brand new TC and wanted to use it as my main router.
You will not be able to use the TC as your "main" router. It must be configured to operate in Bridge Mode with your existing modem/router.

  • I have just changed internet providers from BT to Virgin, and now my iTunes doesn't show any of my airport express devices.

I have just changed internet providers from BT to Virgin, and now my iTunes doesn't show any of my airport express devices.  I assume that I have to reconfigure them to the the new wireless but how do I do this frmo my PC?  Thanks

I would recommend that you start by performing a "factory default" reset on each of your AirPort Express base stations. Once completed, you can use the following Apple Support article to configure each base station for streaming.

  • I am having trouble connecting to my wireless internet. I keep getting message that my network configuration settings have changed. Ive been advised that i need to change settings to look for dynamic ip address ?

I am having trouble connecting to my wireless internet and am getting the message that my network configuration settings have changed. I have reported it to my provider who advised that they think the Mac is looking for a fixed IP address and they use dynamic addresses. I have had the Mac for months and have not had this problem before. I would appreciate any help please on how to fix this ?

Then I get a separate pop up that says: Secure Connection Failed. aus3.mozilla:443 uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is only valid for the following names: securelogin.arubanetworks.com, www.securelogin.arubanetworks.com
    (Error code: ssl_error_cert_domain)
This could be a problem with the server's configuration or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.
If you have connected to this server successfully in the past the error may be temporary and you can try again later.
I have tried many many times!

  • How do I set up my kids laptop to have to ask for wireless internet password everytime?

I don't want my kids to be able to just click on a web browser and automatically connect to the internet. I want the wireless internet to require a password everytime in order to log on to the wirelss router.
    How do I do this?

    How do I do this?
The AirPort Extreme (and other Apple routers) do not have this type of capability. Using the AirPort Extreme, it is possible to enable one or both of the following options:
    1) Require a password to to connect to the wireless network every time the network is accessed
    2) Set up daily time limits for each device that will be allowed to connect to the wireless network
If you need an applicaton to control access to the Internet or specific sites on the Internet, you might take a look at OpenDNS as a potential solution.

  • Can my 2001 G4 Powerbook have wireless internet?

    Hi,
I purchased a G4 Powerbook around Spring of 2001. I am not sure if it is Airport ready. I misplaced all the manuals for it. If I wanted wireless internet (to be used at school, hotspots, etc.), do I just buy an Airport card and pop it inside (I noticed Airport cards are on sale at Fry's for $49)? Are there any other procedures? Thanks.

    Hi,
Your PowerBook uses the original (802.11b) AirPort card, not the AirPort Extreme card (802.11b/g). The original card is no longer made but can be found on eBay and some retailers such as L.A. Computer Co. but the price is almost double an AirPort Extreme card. Once you have the card it's plug and play.

  • I have a first gen iPad, and it will randomly go home from the Internet when I don't press any button.  I have a wireless connection at home.

I have a first gen iPad, and it will randomly go home from the Internet when I don't press any button.  I have a wireless connection at home.  Is this a known bug?  What can I do?

You maybe running low on memory since you are using the original iPad with iOS 5.1.1 and the iPad is crashing. This may help and it certainly won't hurt.
Quit all apps completely and reboot the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Do this before you launch Safari again. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear Cookies and Data. You don't have to clear the history.
