We have an airport extreme wifi in house, but also want to set up a hardwired ethernet connection for gaming and streaming of netflix. The computer only sees one or the other not both at same time.
We have a new iMac 2.9ghz and are running an airport extreme set up in house with several express entenders. The problem is that our son is streaming netflix and doing on line gaming and hogging all the band width. Time Warner tech suggested a hard wired ethernet connection to computer base sattion next to computer so that it can have direct conenction to internet. After much fishing of wire the connection worked great, but the wifi connection for the house is gone. I unplugged the ethernet connection and everything is fine. I read the articles about adjusting network preferences, but the issue seems to be in the extreme not in the computer. the connection goes from cable modem to extreme, from extreme to house and to hard wired conenction to other computer. Do we need a splitter before the extreme?
No. Something else is going on.
Your son may be hogging all the bandwidth but your wireless network should never simply disappear. Moreover, if your son isn't doing anything the available bandwidth for other devices should remain unaffected.
I suspect that something is miswired, and from what you describe I suspect that link is between the Extreme and the "other computer".
The way to accomplish what you propose is
Modem > Ethernet cable to Extreme's WAN port
Extreme's LAN ports > wired Ethernet devices.
There should be nothing but an Ethernet cable linking an Extreme LAN port and any other wired device. If you run out of available LAN ports on the Extreme, you need to by an "Ethernet switch" - they are not expensive, but don't call it a "splitter" or you will only confuse yourself. The switch would be connected to one of the Extreme's LAN ports, and you would connect additional devices to it. You can also use one of your Expresses for that purpose, assuming it is the current generation model with two Ethernet ports.

I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless to rooms with a weak signal. The internet connection is fine with the basic setup. As soon as I go into Airport Utility to select Extend Wireless Network and fill in what I believe is proper information, I get an error message that Airport Extreme no longer has an IP address, the internet connection is broken, and under Wireless, that there is a wireless network in existence that can't be found. Rebooting the modem only brings the Airport Extreme back to the starting gate so that the internet is once again available. I assumed (naively) that with the All Mac All-the-Time context, adding Airport Express would truly be Plug and Play. I got the plug, but no play. I asked a Comcast technical specialist about it and he said that I needed to reset the Airport Express settings back to their default, factory status. I looked that process up online and found out that the way to do that was to hold down the reset button, then plug Airport Express into the socket and wait for the green light to flash four times. Then wait 45 seconds and the default settings will return. I did all that, only to find out that after the initial flash of green, green never appeared again. I got a fast flashing yellow light, followed by the light going off. Apparently this didn't reset it properly. So, after hours trying to get this system to work, I appeal to someone who can see through this mess and provide the key to success!

You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
Correct?

Memory works in either slot, but not both at same time?
Hi, I've recently purchased some ram to upgrade my girlfriend's powerbook G4 15" 1.3ghz, 2x1gb chips. Before I installed it, I noticed the mac was only reporting 512meg of ram when we thought there was 1gb. Sure enough, there were actually 2x512 in there, but only 1 chip was being recognized. So, I tried the new ram anyway, to find of course that it would only recognize 1 of the 1gb chips also. In searching, of course, I've found all sorts of info on the lower slots going bad, but I've found in testing that any of the 4 chips (2 512mb and 2 1gb) will work in either slot, just not 2 chips at a time. So, both the upper & lower slots will actually function.
When I run the hardware test on the restore cd (sorry, I'm probably using the wrong name for this. I don't have it in front of me, and I generally.. gasp.. use PC's) I get this error:

Now, she did upgrade to leopard maybe 6 months ago, but other than that, no major changes.
So, my questions would be, is this the same as the lower slot failure that everyone is having? Or is this something different? And, of course, is there anything I can do or try to fix it?

My guess, and that's all it is, is that you have the beginnings of a classic lower RAM slot failure. I suspect, and it's only a suspicion, that lower RAM slot failures are caused by cracked solder joints, which in turn are caused by repetitive heat-related expansion and contraction of components on the logic board including the RAM sockets. My hunch, and it's only a hunch (have I qualified this post enough yet?) is that your lower slot is coming unstuck from the logic board only to the extent, so far, that when the spring-loaded slot is stressed in the particular way that having RAM modules in both slots produces, a crucial lower-slot contact is broken and the RAM in it isn't seen. When the lower slot and/or the logic board is stressed a little differently, by having a module in only one slot, the contact isn't broken. I imagine that the tolerances involved are minute: probably thousandths of an inch. I won't be surprised if the problem worsens to the point that your lower slot is completely undetected, particularly if you keep stressing the hardware by inserting and removing RAM modules in both slots, trying to find the cause. And I have nothing at all to suggest except all this guesswork and this repair option. I wish I could offer something more promising and helpful.

I have three Airport Extreme (AE) routers in my home network.
The main AE is set up for wifi access. The other two are connected by ethernet cables to the main AE. My MacBook Pro connects to the network wirelessly through the main AE. The AE in my office has two HP printers connected to it by ethernet cables. I have a Kodak All-in-one that is connected by USB to my MacBook Pro.
I reset my printer connections on my MacBook Pro and had to add all the printers back to my printer list. I don't know if I understand what the checkbox "Share this printer on the network" in the Print & Fax System Preferences window is for. My guess is that I don't need to share printers unless they are connected to my MacBook Pro by USB, so I should uncheck the "Share this printer on the network" box for the two HP printers that are connected to the AE. I print to them over the network, but they're not connected directly to any computer. I thought if my MacBook Pro wasset to share them and was shutdown, the printers might not be available to my Mac mini or Dell PC, which connect by ethernet to the office AE (which has the two printers connected to it).
What should I do?
For printers connected directly to a Mac (or PC) by USB, check the "Share this printer on the network" box? In my Sharing Preferences, I check "Share Printers."
For printers connected to the AE by ethernet, UNcheck the "Share this printer on the network" box on my Macs (& PCs?) when I add the printers to my printer list? In my Sharing Preferences, I UNcheck "Share Printers?"

Things will be fine since the AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme will automatically search for a good wireless channel. If you assign a separate name for the wireless network, then devices will need to log in separately to this network. The extending device will need to be configured in Bridge Mode.
My suggestion would be to configure what is known as a "roaming" network in your question #2. In this case, you would assign the same wireless network name, security and password settings to the extending device and configure it in Bridge Mode.
The advantage to #2 is that you will be able to walk your laptop from a location near the Time Capsule and as you move close to the extending device, the laptop will automatically switch to pick up the stronger signal from the extending AirPort.
You are actually creating a separate network in #2, so you have the advantage of maximum bandwidth for both the TC network and the AirPort network.
Question - does the Airport Express have to be directly connected to the TC or can that connected be through a switched network?
I'm assuming that you are asking about an Ethernet switch here, correct? The AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme can connect to the Ethernet switch, or directly back to a LAN port on the Time Capsule, whichever is easier to setup.
Question 2 - assuming I can connect the Airport Express to the TC over a switched network, will "extending" the network using the Ethernet network still reduce my overall wireless bandwidth?
Connecting the remote device using Ethernet is by far the best way to extend a wireless network because it maintains maximum bandwidth on the network. This is the way that any good commercial network is designed.

I have an airport extreme as my primary, I then have an express wired to my extreme. i also have another express as wifi. I am not sure if both express' should be in bridge mode or extend. Please help. Carl
The express wired to the extreme should be in bridge and setup to create a wireless network.. your best bet is to follow the roaming instructions.

ThanksThe netgear is not going to work very well.. and not at all unless it is universal wireless extender.. you cannot use WDS method.
If it does support universal wireless then make sure the airport uses a rational SMB compatible wireless name.. not an apple name which is 35 characters long with spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe.
So nice AE name.. AEwifi and actually while you are trying.. fruitlessly to do this.. use AE24ghz and AE5ghz (so different names on the different bands)
Assuming your AE is gen3 or greater.
You should also fix the wireless channel at least for 2.4ghz since the netgear is probably only going to repeat 2.4ghz so use channel 11, as a trial.
And use no wireless security as a test.. if that works.. then use WPA1 & 2.. as often old equipment using WPA2 is not compatible.
If it fails with simple name.. fixed channel and no security. Sorry it is not compatible at all.. it happens.
If your AE is G wireless or earlier model.. really the time has come for replacement.
If your Express is G wireless model it is not supported.. and is too old to bother with expect I guess if you want to run audio to a speaker.
You must use older 5.6 utility to do this.. so do you have a computer running older OS.. up to Mountain Lion it is easy to install with a bit of manipulation.. later is much harder .. or windows computer anywhere or available to you. -
To extend wifi range, I plugged in my airport extreme within exisitng range but the device does not appear in my airport utility (on the left of the screen). The airport extreme is blinking amber. Please advise. Thank you.
The AirPort Extreme can extend the signal from another Apple router wirelessly, so as long as you have a 802.11n version of the products, the extend function should work.
Please check to locate the Model No of both of your AirPort routers. It will be on the bottom of the device. Starts with an "A" followed by four numbers, as in "A x x x x".
Post back with that info.
We also need to know the version of AirPort Utility that you are using. If you are not sure, click the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About AirPort Utility and post back with tht info as well. -
Have 2 airport extreme base stations connected in chain. Airport utility shows slave unit without power. However, power is on slave unit, but status lights do not show up at all. Small green lights at each back port blink. Anyone have any ideas?
Unfortunately, you are describing the symptoms of an AirPort Extreme with a failing (or failed) internal power supply.
As a last resort, try a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Power off the AirPort by pulling the power cord
Wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Now try to configure the AirPort again. If you continue to see the same symptoms as before, the AirPort will need to be replaced. -
I have an Airport Extreme as my router and am using time capsule to extend the network in my new house. My ISP is only providing me 4-5 ip addresses and wants me to set up my router to issue out new ip addresses for all my devices.How do I fix this?Help.
They said I need to change my settings to NAT settings. I haven't been able to figure out or find anything. I have also spoken to Apple Support on the phone for hours without being able to figure out how to do this ( i don't think he knew much either lol.) I have an older Airport Extreme (disc shaped) that we use with my wife's PowerBook (OS 10.5.8) and my MacBook Pro (OS 10.9.4). Yes. Your G4 shouldn't have any difficulty connecting to a Wi-Fi network provided by the latest 802.11ac AirPorts as they support the earlier radio modes that the G4 uses. -
i have an airport extreme attached to cable, then one airport express to extend the range. when i try to add an additional airport express to extend range in another area of house, can't get it to work. utility says it has found a new base station and asks if i want to use it. if i click yes, then the old setup is disabled.

Since you have the new Time Capsule, then you will need a new AirPort Extreme to match the performance capabilities of the Time Capsule.
If best quality is preferred, you will need to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection between the devices. The advantage of doing it this way is that you can locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it is needed...and there will be no loss of signal through the Ethernet cable.
A wireless connection will result in a significant drop in performance, but it might be OK for your uses, if you want to try it that way first to see if the performance is acceptable.
It is really important that the AirPort Extreme be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
A line-of-sight relationship between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme would be the goal, with the AirPort Extreme located about half way between the Time Capsule and the general area where you need more wireless signal coverage. -
My ipad2 (2 years old) will not turn on at all, with home key, or power on key, or both at same time. I just updated to 7.0.4 and there is a passcode, but my screen is blank and I can't turn it on.
Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.
Pictures taken with the device are designed to regularly be copied off the device to a computer as would be done with any digital camera.
If you have failed to use the device as designed it may be too late to recovery anything.
Is the device regularly backed up to a computer via iTunes? If so, the most recent backup (when restored to a replacement iOS device) should contain all contacts and pictures as of when the backup was created. -
